Hey guys in today's video, I'm gon na show you how to start in dreadlocks with long hair. My hair is about 14 inches and I do have a high-top fade of just long curly hair, if you guys do remember, actually, is to have dreadlocks. So it's gon na be pretty interesting, restarting the process, but in today's video, I'm literally just gon na pull my hair down, wet it really good, and then I'm going to get my sections and then twist my hair with my fingers. I don't believe I'm gon na be doing comb calls today, I'm mostly just going to be using my fingers and to tell you the truth: I'm not gon na be using any product, but if you were to use products, I would recommend using the jamaican mango a Line walking gel and the reason I'm not using products, because my hair is long and it's gon na hold a little bit better than if you were to have. You know shorter hair with shorter hair. You would typically want to use a locking gel, and my favorite overall is the jamaican mingle inline, which I'll link down below, but since we're talking about the products, I'm using, I'm also going to be using this spray bottle. Now this is my favorite spray bottle, just because it like sprays really long. So it gets a lot of coverage and I'm also gon na be using a rat tail comb, and I like this one because it has a metal tip at the end of the comb. And this is for me to get my separations and possibly do comb coils with this, if I'm not doing finger coils, but both of these will be linked down below as well, and that's basically all I'm gon na be using, but, like I said you would want To use to make a mingle on line blocking gel if your hair is a little shorter, I mean you can't even use it on longer hair, but in today's video I'm gon na do it without using any products. So say you wanted to start today and you didn't have time to go to the store or order any product or you don't even have money to do it. You could honestly just use the products that I'm using in today's video, but I would definitely recommend the shorter hair use, locking gel or if you want it to start working immediately, use locking gel so right now, I'm just gon na take my hair down. Also we're going to mention my favorite hair ties. These are thicker hair ties and they work really well, I'm a link these down below as well. Just because there are my favorite hair ties and I always get these ones. So this is what my hair is looking like right now, it's pretty messy washed it a couple days back. I actually went swimming in the ocean not too long ago as well, but you can see. How are you really curly right now looks actually pretty interesting if it wasn't as frizzy. Well, I'm gon na go ahead and take my glasses off, so I don't get them too dirty. Then I'm just gon na start out by wetting there and then gathering my sections. So the biggest thing you want to do is just make sure that your hair is fully saturated and you don't have to use a spray bottle. You can like shower and wait your hair, but I'm just doing this so that I can show you guys on film. So my hair is wet. I'M running my fingers through my hair. My hair is detangled that typically stated to tangled as long as I to tangle it and then pull it up. But you definitely don't want your hair to be super tangled up wire to open this whole process, because it's gon na be hard to get your sections and then, at the same time, it's going to be hard to even twist the hair. If it's combined with all this other hair, now I'm just going to get my Center part and when I'm doing this, I'm not trying to get like perfect sections cuz, I don't like I mean when I had my dreadlocks first, I didn't have perfect sections on, like The way that looked but a big pointer is that your dreadlocks are gon na be sectioned. However, you section them the first time, but if you can bind dreadlocks, then it will look different. But, however, you want your sections to be. This is how you make them right here, because I typically don't change after you have established the dreadlocks, so I'll go ahead and get this Center one real quick! Now that I got the middle section out of the way I'm gon na start doing what's called braking. That'S where you stack the sections as if they're bricks, so that they lay down flat versus stacking on top of each other, so I'm gon na do each side by themselves, so we'll go ahead and pull this side up now that you have this side to work With its gon na make it a whole lot easier to manage that area, I'm sweating the hair again to let it stay saturated. Okay. Now I'm just gon na get this first section. I'M gon na make a pretty decent sized sections note this first one you have to follow your hairline follow all the way down to where your hair stops. Okay, so you can see where I have this section off right here and it matches my hairline really well. So I'm just gon na brush through it really quick. So now that I have this, I'm gon na go ahead and do two sections right here. I'Ll tell you the truth. This is gon na be the longest part, especially with maintain dreadlocks. It'S just getting this sectioning comb, i -- q, that's gon na be the longest process, so now that I got that I'm just gon na gather all the roots and make sure to comb them out, so that all the air is in there. Alright, now that we got that, I'm gon na put I'm gon na twist. All of these clockwise I'm just going in and literally just twisting and like I said I would do comb coils, but I actually just want to do these with my fingers, and this is gon na hold the separation very well yeah. So that's what that's gon na look like, and this does just typically look like a finger quo like if you to do finger coils or comb coils. Even what happens during the drilling process is that this hair will bud up and then it starts to tangle and then it'll lock up. So it's the whole process of getting close-up, budding up and then locking up. So it's a three-step process and it takes a couple months for this whole process to take place. But at the same time, if you wanted to after doing this, you can immediately go into crochet hooking and have a crochet hook right here. I'Ll leave a link to a crush needle down below, and I use the size. 12 / 1.00. After you get your section like how I did right now and did a twist. You can go on and instantly lock up your dreadlocks, but if you want to enjoy the process, just go ahead and leave it like this and then you make sure that they stay in their sections. Now that I got that one, I'm gon na start on the next one and your hair to be slightly damp so that it can hold since you're not using any product. But if you are using product. Obviously, you want to make sure that it's damp as well and then apply the product mostly at the root, then distribute it throughout the length of the hair while you're twisting it. But now, if that's a damp, it should hold it in really well, you can see how this one's holding, so I'm just gon na go ahead and start with this one is I'm literally just literally wrapping my finger around it like this, and I'm just doing it Over and over again so that it tightens up just try your best to not pull in any of the other loose hair in one way you can do is I do the twist and then grab it with your opposite hand, so that you can keep that twist And keep it tight and you want it to go all the way down to the roof as tight as possible, and, like I mentioned earlier, if you have locking Jill, I would recommend you use it, but if you don't have it, it's not necessary, mostly because these Will hold a whole lot better, alright, so there's those two and it's gon na look a whole lot better after I finished up with everything, so I'm just gon na repeat this whole process with the rest of my head, so I'm gon na go in and get My section of hair okay, so I got that section of hair I'll, throw this back again now in this, where I'm showing you how to start your dreadlocks with basically using no products whatsoever, but another product that you can use. That will help out a whole lot with this process is using duct clips and duck lips will basically hold the roots together. So like with the two that I already started. If I were to Det clip those together, the roots would hold a little bit better and it would have a better result in the end. But if you're not using any products like, I said you can just do it, how I'm doing it you'd be perfectly fine. Just got ta be patient it. I am gon na pull back this extra set of hair just because it does kind of get in the way. Okay. So I was going to go ahead and brick this section, but I'm actually not I'm going to do two dreadlocks with this section as well, but I will go over slightly so that they are heated now just saw the twisting process again. One thing you want to be aware of is like, however, you twist an RV lay it down is kind of on the dreadlocks are gon na lay for a while. You see how these ones are the front hanging down forward, and that's just because of how I laid them down now time to just keep on working my way back, I think I can make two or three more sections with this hair. Okay, guys, I finished the right side of my head and you can see how it looks now. One thing that you'll notice is that you can't really see this sections too well, and this is what I'm saying about using products. If you use Jamaican mingle and I'm locking gel it will help you get that section. A whole lot better and it'll be more visible. At first, but one thing is, is like these are all gon na lock up the same, just as if you were to use locking Joe walking Joe is one of those things. That'S not really a permanent solution to locking up your hair. It'S one of those things that temporarily holds your hair so that it looks good over the time of you getting your dreadlocks. But if you use no products, your hair will naturally lock up a whole lot easier versus having build-up and anything like that. But if you want your hair to appear to look a lot better during the whole process, then use locking John, I would recommend using my favorite, which is Jamaica, mingle, nut and locking Joe what you guys. I'M gon na finish this side of my head and try to even it out and then I'll show you guys what it looks like when it's completely finished. Okay, guys, I just finished doing all these starter locs and I'm not gon na lie. They look really cool. Reminds me a lot of when I had my dreadlocks, which really cool, seeing my hair like this, and I think it's even better now that I have the tapered hair line. I think it just ties everything and a whole lot better and, like I said guys, they are pretty messy, but the good thing about it is like dreadlocks over time. It'S like it all it is, is just your hair, knotting up and then locking together. So if it looks messy or if it looks frizzy that all is going to tighten up over time, especially with being patient, the main ingredients to dread is being patient. I don't care anybody, tells you. If you plan on having good-looking dreadlocks, the best thing to have is patience, one thing that you notice is that the dreadlocks appear very thick and I'll, be truly honest with you is that I think these are gon na turn on really well. As long as you allow them to lock up, because eventually the user will lock up and they will be tighter, they're, not gon na be as thick and I'll break down the process to you really quickly on how everything's gon na lock up so we'll take the Tip, for instance, you can see that it's still just a curl and it looks like just a comb coil or a finger coil what's going to happen is this eventually is going to butt up which basically the hair kind of separates, and then it's going to start To compress, then it'll lock up and then blunt off the tip and eventually it'll work, its way all the way down to the root and that's how dreadlocks lock up a lock from the tip all the way down to the roof. So that's a huge pointer on doing crochet hooking. If you were to crochet hook, your hair make sure you start from the tip work your way down to the root and, like I said earlier, you can't take a crush needle to this right now, if you would like to and get instant dreadlocks, but it just Depends on what kind of dreadlocks you want and get if you want to have dreadlocks that look, maintained and coiled up then stick with this and just wait a couple months and then it'll start to eventually lock up or if you want to instantly lock them up. You don't only care what they look like up, close, go ahead and finish off with the crush needle and your hair will lock up really fast, but here's a quick 360 and I'm super stoked on how this looks actually looks, really good. I'M gon na pull it up for you guys and show you what that looks like. So this actually looks pretty good. You know I mean they're all pulled back and then one thing I cannotice right off. The bat is that these are gon na shrink whole bunch. Just because they are coiled up so if you want to eliminate that shrinkage, I would recommend going in with the crochet hook right after this. But if you don't really care about all the shrinkage, that's gon na happen, then you're gon na be completely fine, but I mean, if you look up close, you can see all the separations now all the way down to the scalp, but you can see where they Are - and they are very invisible, but they are all the way down the scalp. Now they go completely funds that and the cool thing about this is now that I have this sections. I could go for a similar, freeform look and just allow them do whatever they want right now, since they already are sectioned off and to tell you the truth like up close, they look like faux dreadlocks like they look like they were just installed, but it is Just my hair coiled up and they're actually standing in really well, as you can see, I've been pulling it up and pulling it down and it stays in, and it's just how I mentioned in the beginning of the vid, since my hair is longer, it's gon na Have a better hold just because there's so much more link to the hair, but if your hair is shorter, it's gon na be hard to lock it up. If you don't have any gel, so you guys that's today's video. Hopefully you guys really enjoyed it hope. You'Re. Looking forward to this whole little series, I'm doing you guys quick. Another 360 show you that it's still okay, even after pulling it up, but I will tell you this to encourage you just be patient to the whole process and join the way. Her looks today and be okay with it. Don'T worry about what other people think just know that the end is gon na, be better than how it looks at the beginning. But the biggest thing is just to enjoy your hair. How it looks now, because it's gon na look what people like to call ugly or it's gon na, go through an ugly stage, but an ugly stage is all based on your perception, what you think of yourself. So hopefully that encourages you. Hopefully, this soil helped. You all out on how to actually start dreadlocks with longer hair, but I would recommend using the Jamaican mango and lime walking gel and also, if you wanted to get instant dreads like I said you can use a crochet hook. You know all the products that I'm mentioning or that I used in this video are gon na, be linked down below and are on great locs calm, so be sure to go check all that out and then I'll see you guys next time. Hopefully, guys do own amazing day matter of fact have a great day: peace out and God bless

Keep It Loc'd Keep It Healthy: Quick Tip: If you want them to lay a certain way you have to twist them or start them in that direction (pulling).

G.R. Bambinaria: Love the message at the end about loving your hair the way it is now. I've been growing my hair from a buzzcut since Feb, and that's what I had to tell myself everyday when i went through the "ugly" stage. Which to me wasn't all that ugly at all. It's mostly due to what other people say/ imply when they talk about ur hair. Anyway, awesome tutorial! I'm planning on starting dreads once my hair grows a bit more. <3

Patterson Boyz: YAY! So glad I found this tutorial! My son's hair is exactly like yours. It took me all weekend to undo his freeform dreads.ive been palm rolling weekly for a year, soi wanted to redo them. Thank you thank you thank you

HeyJay: I’ve never personally had interested on getting dreads or locs on myself but I’m very interested on seeing you restart the process!

Kayla Lassiter: Finally decided on locing my hair. Went to the store and bought the Jamaican mango and lime . Then came home and found this video ! Soon as I saw you recommended the same product I was like yeah let me watch this. Love this video ! Very descriptive and your voice is calming. Also . We have a gray hair in the same spot ❗️

Problem Child Ftw: Thank you so much! I have been considering combing my dreads out but I was nervous about if I will like how my normal hair looks after not having it for a while. But now I know that if I do comb it out and don’t like it, I can have a way for getting dreads back with my longer hair. So again thank you

John-Paul OP: Hey Gunther, great videos. I looking for advice on products to start and maintain dreadlocks. I am sceptical using wax because it gets dry. I had dreadlocks before and I cut it. My hair is about 9inches long.

malik stuart: Watch your channel when I need inspiration to continue growing out my hair, currently at 5 1/2 inches, many thanks from Barbados

G. Miguel: Great video man! I've been watching you for some time now! You're one of my greatest inspirations for starting my channel! All around a great dude dropping solid knowledge in community!

TEE BANKS: Restarting the dread process

EXTENDED.EXTENDO: Im just starting dreads! You are one of the greatest influences for me to go for dreads

Edward Soto: Hey, I'm starting a dreadlock journey here very soon without help. Based on your recommendation I got Jamaican Lime and Mango locking gel, I have never done anything at all with my hair (white mom and Puerto Rican dad, who's idea of hair care was to buzz it) and I'm nervous/excited. I have grown out my hair for 4 years now, longest it's ever been, and I started growing it because people told me it needed to be long for dreads, So I'm definitely dedicated to the trip. My question for you is, is there an easier way to twist your own dreadlocks if you have arthritis? I am trying to get started sometime this week but I know it's gonna take a long time to dread my hair by myself so any response would be great.

Melodia Nicole: "If you ARE using products make sure to mostly apply at the root and gradually work your way down the hair" THANK YOU! Ii really appreciate that tid bit of info at 6:14 ^__^

Alex: This video is amazing I tried to get dreds a year ago but this video helps so much

bonez41008: Before he would say start the crochet hooking from the root and just keep doing it until the tip, now he's saying different. But it's cool. Wonderful presentation Gunther, your stuff always has had great visual presentation

Luh snipe: This is a long process, but you've motivated me to do this

SelvixSZN: Gunther, what’s a life routine you’d do with this method like do you have to wet it everyday and retwist til it eventually locks or like once a week?

zacharyss: Literally did this like 2 weeks ago!!!! My hair dreaded up mad fast.

Rodney Agyare: I liked how you walked us through the process. Will you be keeping the twists until they form into dreadlocks or were you just showing us for the video?

K1NGY: This looks so cool. This whole video makes me wanna get dreadlocks I have long curly and tangled hair like u had at the start but noe this looks so cool u make me feel inspired and want to look like u in this video

ReggaeMuffin: Damn, first hair care video I've ever seen from start to finish. Thanks for the inspo!

Antoinette Gilbert: Beautiful hair!!

Thraxx Kami: Quick question though, after finger coiling do you leave the dreads untouched without washing for a couple months? Cause I've never done dreads myself and wanna start so I'm pretty clueless on this.

Realtruth144: I suggest not to crochet your locs, it’s better to have them have a more natural look to them as they mature, also longer hair makes your locs lock faster than short, but be ready for major shrinkage

Devin Martinez: Gonna try this bro thanks for the video bro I been trying to find a easy way to do dreadlocks without paying so much money to get my hair in dreadlocks also have curly hair like yours and this video helped will give it a try

Famous Keys: I’ve been with you since you started your old dread journey if I ever cut my “twisted” locs I would grow out some “free form” locs

DEDSEC: Nice content keep up the good job Gunther

SydSoSaucy: Started hightop dreads with around 3 inches of hair with no products or locking jell, just been twisting with my finger counter-clock wise for the past 3 months and im currently in the budding and frizzy stage and my side dreads can touch my the tip of my ear now

Devin573: Sup bro I have a question. I'm biracial also and my hair hasn't been cut a little over a year . My hair is probably 3 or 4 inches shorter than yours. I'm completely new to dreads and would like to know what method should I use ? This one or the one with the mannequin fro , or another?

UNbowed62: Thank you! ❤️

zach112703: I’m white/Jewish and my 3a hair when pulled down goes about to the bottom of my nose, I have given myself finger coils just to see what it looks like and they came out pretty well, do you think my hair would eventually lock up? Should I grow it out more? Thanks.

RILLA MAN: My 9 year old son wants locks‍♂️. His hair is kinda like yours. His curls are bigger by a lot. I’m sure it would be kinda hard to get his to lock. It’s to soft. I had them years ago. I have nappy hair hair, so mine locked super fast with in two to three weeks or so. Good work though. I’d have to show my son. It’s going to be a lot of work. He doesn’t know that yet .

Diablo SOTHROWED: literally just started my second dreadlock journey as well

Waterlina: This is literally the video I needed

Javier Santiago: Ok now I have a little more confidence see that we got the same type of hair

Dolce Buonincontro: deserves more subs definitly helps even if you dont have dreadlocks. gunther helped me set a hair routine

Simone Alves: How do you actually have to maintain them at this stage? Like how should you sleep, should you wrap your hair before sleeping? How to wash? Should you wash at this stage?

YumiTM: i used moco de gorila for my hair, i have 4c and it worked really well, i even use it for retwisting also

BeefPattyGamez: Ayeee thanks man!!! I just left a comment asking for this 3 days ago!!! thanks and God Bless brother

Kelsey D: A almost loced my hair like this when I did finger twists and left them in for 2 weeks so you know my detangling process was long and tedious

Jagger Loco: Yes finally he is back looking fresh and feeling nice and your locs gonna come out amazing and stay bless and keep up the great work.

Junk TV: Yesss. Finally. I've been waiting for this day. I missed your locs. Im so late too. Never would have known you got them back if I didnt watch greatlocs.

Waimirirangi Papali'I-Smith: Can the coil method be done straight hair too ?? :)

memes for days: thanks man, my freinds have been telling me to get dreds and i didnt know it was so easy

Kameron Mcintosh: Can you show us how to lock up dreads with a crochet needle on short curly hair

Thekingfirst 7: Two strand twist or boxbraids are the healthiest methods to start locs.

Pierce Rose: When I don’t want my locks anymore will I still have my length? I have over 3 years of growth and I love how my natural hair looks (fairly similar to his)

LOC GOD: about to see if i can make it to December without a retwist currently at 1 year & 7 months

American Illuminati: Was gonna comb out my locs, but after seeing you go right back to locs. I'm good lol.

MetiQlus Rte: Btw I subbed brodie cause your videos are lit. Especially the tapered hairline tutorial

Nu Knowledge: I ain’t gonna this inspired me to do my own lol been waiting on my sis but she been hella busy so I just twisted mine today. they lock

Dante Parker: when you get a retwist can you change ur parting?

obamayomama9: just cut some of my hair and i regretted it. that end message really helped thank u

A1z3k: You should do a video on how to start dreadlocks off braids.

Cylo Plays: can i do medium dreads with short hair or small dreads?

Xavier Michael: This is great.

Levaniel Midoriya: See, I knew there was a clean and proper way to do this, I have a friend who has dreads and she probably shouldn't with how her hair has reacted over the years, she has a girl come over and not twist, but roll back and forth on her scalp, no water, no gel, no wax, no comb, just twisting it back and forth until it does look like hair anymore, like if yarn was 2in across and 30 y/o; another guy (he's white, yes, it matters with the type of hair) said his locks up naturally and he's never washed his dreads. He said you aren't supposed to wash dreads ever and his head just stinks so bad. Get locks if you want no matter who or what you are, JUST DO IT RIGHT

MetiQlus Rte: Bro this video is really helpful for me because you follow proper technique and not alot of people upload videos like that with description❤

Twon Exclusivez: Damn bro I needed this one

Super Channel: Bro can you show how to make dreadlocks right if they are get fluffy? I got straight hair and I hate when it get fluffy& appreciate your work man

Avi: In this video you say do crochet from the tip to the root, but in other videos you say the opposite, where you twist the hair and work down to the tip. So which is it?

MARS Official: my favorite channel atm ✨

Stephan Steele: Finally found someone with hair like mine!

Shayla Eldridge: Do you have a video on how to use the crochet needle

ishshaboyrome: My hair is long with tight curls but it shrinks about 75% of its actually length. Is there anyway I could get dreads and minimize the shrinkage

KELAMY: Shout out to ulta for the awesome spray bottles master designer here❤️

Charlie Terrell: Should I brick so my dreads lay flat or should I want them to stack? Is it just a preference thing? I have straight hair btw

GoddessNneka: Do you use hair pins or anything to keep them in place

J. Ream: I feel like it's the other way around, most of the time the ends are the last area to loc on most people

the greatest: I wanna have my hair like that but I dont want dreads, what can I do. Ill probably have to redo it pretty often so they don't lock

T-Raw66: My question is how do you shower with starter locs cause soon imma get myself some locs and I wanna get locs and I don't wanna shower which idk if it would like make them unlock or twist

AlphaGamer: In my opinion I think you should get dreads again and like you said semi freeform this time

swayraxx: Do I need to put the locking gel on after ?

archive: i actually needed this lmao

CashoutGang: can you finger coil your hair if you got long wavy/straight hair ?

Essendoh _: make a video where you explain how to turn a two strand twist into dreads

Jemi Got Soul: OH MAH GAH! one word...YES

Edward Tagala: I appreciate your hair!♥

tonylifts: Damn this is fire

Nikki Collins: Gosh what a handsome young man

oohflacco: Shout yo all the people who have a full head of dreads and they maintain it themselves I used have a full head of dreads and it was so much work to keep it lookin clean

read 123: Starter locs are better then dreaded locks

whiskey in a bottle: Sometimes I end up overusing the gel. And my hair shrinks like a dm. Any idea on what I could do. I feel it’s hard not to use too much gel.

carlaK: how do you sleep on this? and where’s a video on crocheting?

Martha Gonzalez: Nice video and hair keep up the work

Adri Chap: I do the samedi hair cut but every time i wash my hair i have to retwist them and when i play basketball i have to restart the twist so i can't lock them. If someone can help me i'm not a pro for that

d e a c z gaming: Thx so much for the help finally I have dreds

Jacques Jordan: really enjoy your videos Keep doin mate

Yung caviar: Most def finna try it out

BeefPattyGamez: Gunther we can pass for brothers my pops is Jamaican and my mom is Puerto Rican.. we have the same hair type

Borntrager81: Finally back with the dreads!!!!!

Robert Rodriguez: Yo this just helped me so much

3Pac: I got curly hair and when I wash it it gets really curly stringy then when it dries there are a lot of big coils in the from and the rest of my hair is just a bunch of curls so I think I kinda got both curls and coils ‍♂️

Laz.: So the more dreads u want the smaller the sections have to be?

Peyton B: Does this work on straight hair?

Tyzelr: I'm at 2 months without a retwist now trying to make it to 4
