Okay, so, first of all, if we're going to talk about mistakes that happen with medium-length hair that are kind of robbing that youthful appearance, you first need to understand what i mean by medium length hair. So basically, i'm talking about any length from say a bob shape to roughly the collarbone and when i say youthful, what i mean is not trying to make ourselves look young, but instead trying to look the best that we can at whatever age. We are now. The very first mistake deals with bob shapes because, let's be honest, bob's are like the most popular medium-length haircut ever. One of the biggest mistakes that i see when it comes to bob shapes is having the line parallel to the floor. When we look at each other, we look at each other from a profile to some extent, we don't look at each other face on so when we're turning our head to that profile. That line actually being parallel to the floor doesn't follow our bone structure and therefore it'll actually make it appear as though that length is dragging a bit in the back. When that happens, it has a tendency to bring the eye down, and that can make us look more tired, typically trying to do when we're talking about looking more youthful is we're trying to lift the eye up and not drag ourselves down. Having that length parallel to the floor will actually tend to work against us, i realize it's actually a very popular thing right now. The one length blunt, very basic bob is a big deal. So if it's something that you can rock - and you feel good in, i say - go for it but understand the potential that it can have if it is parallel to the floor now. What i would recommend instead is having that line, follow basically the face structure when it follows that line. It has a tendency to lift the eye up to swing and flow nicer and overall will potentially look a bit more youthful. So, yes, there's that now my calf is killing me, i'm likely to fall backwards into this river. So why don't we move on to the next tip? Oh, my gosh welcome. If you're new uh, my name is justin hickox, i take on adventures and i teach you about hair. My goal make your hair life a little bit easier. While i show you some cool places, why did my voice just crack all right? Well, with that said, uh yeah, let's jump back into the tips, okay, so we're actually out near eagle, creek trail and uh in the gorge, there's a huge fire that came through here in 2017, and actually these trails were locked down. They were restoring them for a couple of years. You weren't didn't have any access to these, but it's such a beautiful area, okay, so the next tip. Now this is a little bit of an opinion, but it's definitely something that you want to pay attention to. When you start talking about medium length, hair we're talking about a length range, that's really sitting around the shoulders or the traps. Now the concern about this is when your hair sits at that length, it's very easy for it to break on your shoulders and start to flip out and then, depending on how long it is, it could flip out quite a bit now it's not that this is A bad look, and it's not that you shouldn't do it the reason. I say that this is a potential mistake is not paying attention to what that's going to do for the overall shape, if you're trying to create a shape, where you add a little bit more volume up towards the temples or the top and maybe take out or Taper in a little bit of that volume to the sides, but then it starts to flip out or break out. It could add more volume to the bottom and therefore creates the illusion, there's less volume on top and work against what you're trying to maybe achieve, which is more volume up in the temple area, to accentuate more cheek structure and lift the eye up. So again, it's not to say that you shouldn't do it, it's just to say that you want to pay attention to what that kick can do now. The other possible concern with having it flip out is, if it flips out too much. It can be a little bit dating in just the overall look, and that may be a larger concern, but this is probably the only tip, that's actually more of an opinion than anything else, but nonetheless you should pay attention to it. So now on to the next step, okay, so the next mistake is not styling your hair and really what i mean by this or what happens is many times people when they start moving into a medium length. They don't recognize the time that it's going to take to actually style it and we'll go a little bit deeper into this. When we talk about the layering here in a minute, but more than likely medium length, hair is going to have some sort of layering and if you're used to longer hair, where maybe you didn't have quite as much layering or you pulled it back a lot and Just aren't really used to taking the time to manage those layers or you had short hair in the past, and the shape was truly just cut into the hair and you just kind of wake up and shower and go when you get into medium shapes you're. Going to likely be dealing with layers and it's going to likely require more maintenance. Now the concern is, if you don't take the time to style it you're not going to get the appropriate shape, that's going to help accentuate what you want to accentuate about your overall face shape. This is going to be what's going to help you look more youthful. I'M going to go ahead and enjoy this little canyon, this little river and wait until you see what i got for you in a minute. It'S ridiculous, okay! So the next big mistake is not layering your hair. Now i get it, you don't want to layer it because at a medium length it might be hard to get it pulled back, especially if you've had shorter hair in the past or even if you've had longer hair in the past. It'S likely that you want to be able to pull your hair back off your face when you can now. The thing is medium length: hair, if you don't add some sort of layering it's going to get exceptionally full because it's not long enough to weigh itself down and it's not short enough to have that volume removed. So it's a scenario where, if you do leave it one length to get it pulled back in a ponytail, if you ever plan on wearing it down, it's going to get very triangular and, as i've said in other videos, that's when we have a problem with it. Adding too much fullness bringing the eye down, i would argue that in these scenarios, at a medium length, you want to have some layering and just understand that when you go to pull your hair back, you still should be able to get your hair back. You may have some pieces that fall out that tuck behind the ears or you may have to use a couple bobby pins behind the ear to get it back off of your face. But to me that's a small price to pay for the benefit that you get now. You might be able to hear this behind you and it's kind of rude that i'm not showing it to you yet we're gon na see if we can get back there, but uh yeah the view we've been going for it's here and it's amazing, i'm just gon Na let you know, let's go see it. Okay, let's go see it so was that worth it? Yes, yes, yes is the answer to that. Yes, that was worth it okay, so, let's jump into the next tip. The next tip is layering. That'S too long. So the problem with this is when you have layers that are too long, especially when you're dealing with a medium length you're going to find that you'll get all of the detriments of having layers with none of the real benefits. It'Ll, actually lighten your hair up. Just a little bit you'll find that you'll get more volume in the bottom, which ends up giving it more of the triangular shape and actually bringing the eye down even more. In this scenario, you're not quite taking the layers short enough to create true volume. On top and to alleviate the bulk out of the sides, you find that you actually accentuate all of the things that we're trying to kind of walk away from you want to layer. It short enough to get the actual benefits of having layers make sense. All right. Now, what i need you to do right now is watch this video right here, so you can learn more about this and other great stuff about hair and yeah. Make sure you subscribe if you like, the content hit like all of that stuff, otherwise uh, i'm gon na hang out here for a while i'll see you in the next video bye

Justin Hickox: What questions do you have about medium length hair??

Susan Baker: Honestly Justin, I think you were a cinematographer in your past life. This was amazing. The quality of your film is outstanding. I appreciate your effort. We all do. And the hair tips were spot on. Exactly what I struggle with. I've watched this video twice now. Thank you. Just breathtaking.

elzbthp67: Gorgeous video, fantastic advice, always!! Thank you for the time and effort you put into these videos! I'm transitioning from a pixie to... who knows what, for the first time in 20 years. It's currently a mess due to fine but plentiful hair growing in, um, interesting directions. The wonderful advice is expected (because you're awesome at what you do) and very much appreciated. Getting to see the absolutely beautiful scenery at the same time is just the best bonus ever. Thank you.

PJ J: so wonderful to see that area! We drove through that heart breaking fire in 2017 (actually on the other side of the Gorge as the road was closed on the fire side). It was devastating as we thought of the mind blowing beauty of those trails and waterfalls on that side. So wonderful to see how the forest is coming back as a new growth forest rather that the old growth that it was. The beauty of a forest regenerating is beautiful in its own right. Great video!!

Pam Smith: Great waterfall!! here in Australia we’ve had our fair share of bushfires and I shed a tear in those times for the life of the trees and animals that call them home, but we are lucky that with a little bit of rain (hopefully) new shoots that are greener than green appear quickly I have been following your tips for a little while now - we have been in lockdown since end of June, I normally get my roots done every 4 weeks so am looking pretty sad BUT with all the regrowth I definitely have a clean slate when I get to hopefully go back to the hairdressers (in a week or 2) and your guidance on cuts/colour (I’m 58 yrs old and normally not a grey hair in sight ) is helping me sooo much and it keeps me knowing that one day soon I’ll be walking out of my regular salon feeling fresh and put back together - I’ve even bought a new blouse to wear on that day - as that’ll mean (hopefully) back to a normal everyday life and normal hair routine. Thank you for your tips they help on a level of keeping me sane as well as letting me sort out what I do and don’t want

Janet S: Love your outdoor adventures that you take us all on. It’s awesome . I’m 63 and have gray with some blond still coming through. Trying to go all natural. Also I’ve always struggled with curly frizzy hair. Now it’s very fine. Just below my shoulders. But I’m so afraid of these so called hair stylist...that don’t listen to clients and start chopping away. I want just trim and thinking of layers. But I don’t know where to have layers or to tell the stylist how to do my hair.

stormet54: Having just lived through the massive and devastating Creek Fire in California, my heart broke to see the fire damage to this forest. The damage to the forest from the Creek Fire is indescribable. You didn't mention what to do about that annoying flip that occurs in medium length hair. I'm going through that right now and it's a battle. I expect I'll have to suffer through it until it gets a bit longer, or cut it shorter which I'd prefer not to do.

Dorina Tudisco: These are excellent tips on how to wear medium length hair in a more youthful and flattering way.

S White: This is awesome! I get hair tips while hiking and exploring!!!

Jody Mead: Thanks Justin! My hair is a little longer than shoulder length, I've always had bangs (high forhead, more of a side bang than in the pic.) My main issue is how to get them full enough to cover and are face framing layers best?

evezford: I like the tips. I would also like to see before and after comparisons side by side to illustrate how the cut changes the youthfulness of the appearance. Those outdoor scenes aren’t at all difficult to look at! What a beautiful area!

Christine P.: Great tips! (and I'm a hiker and love the other stuff too) However, could you show some pictures of medium hair with layers short enough to benefit our faces?? (the one you showed was longer hair and I need more examples)

Clare Cavalli: Great video Justin and I love seeing the beautiful walks you go on. Our dog Lily would love it there I've got medium length hair and I'm due to see my hairdresser 1st May, do this helps with my decision making about a style. Thank you ⭐

Amy K: Great topics. So rare that people talk about this. I wish my stylist would tell me what I should do instead of just what I want or little tweeks to make the haircut you want look better. Love these videos

M M: Another outstanding video! Thank you for your expert advice on hair, and for sharing the amazing nature gems you find. You are a treasure.

light: I’m sorry ,but it’s really hard to hear and focus because of all the noise, probably the waterfall? Or is it me cause no one else is complaining Love your videos and the picturesque surroundings.

francesca dixon: Thank you for that. Now I understand about my hair and the triangle effect. I could hear myself saying to my hairdresser I need it long enough to pull back - ha! Wonderful video and a great waterfall too.

WineRnnr: Came for the hair... stayed for the magnificent video quality. Truly superb!

Sandshell: Absolutely breath taking scenery today. Wow that fire, then the new growth and that waterfall. Thanks for sharing. Oh yes and the tips told me I need to trim my layers and not let them grow out for the summer into one length. Thanks again.

Diana: I’m turning 50 next month. My hair has been long and really great for ten years and I’ve loved it. My issue is I am very active and need to pull it back into a ponytail for Jiu-jitsu training (bobby pins won’t work because of head locks etc lol) but I do want a change that is going to be both flattering and fun. I also work in a men’s federal prison (social worker) so conservative hair is better professionally as I don’t want added attention . I am having a hard time making a decision on medium length styles that will work for my mop of fine hair. Any suggestions?

Ac Haley: Thank you Justin for your incredible and unique way of presenting yourself and your work. Excellent as always,

Elaine Mullins: Wow, the video was amazing from the fire to the music to the falls!!! This is exactly why I went with a shorter cut, while I like medium length hair it did not look good unless I styled it every day. Lazy hair me.

123cetaphil: Awesome tips and amazing background! Life is great! Keep up the great videos! I learn so much and really appreciate the scenery!!

Wendy Bayol: What a great series, visually and informative!

TJ: Great video, Justin! You’ve outdone yourself! Can’t wait for the long hair installment, (which I hope is next?)

Jayne Price: Thankful I do not have to choose which I love most about your videos @justinhickox! Your joyful and positive personality, hair expertise or gorgeous cinematography! love it all‼️

Terry Elizabeth: I loved the whole thing , both your hike and the hair information.

Sue: I have a huge problem figuring out how to style my hair. It's layered. Nice cut. But I don't know how to "do" it that's appropriate for the office AND my age. A lot of the styles I find are more suitable for younger women or less strict office codes.

Jacq Werner: I truly enjoyed that video. Even with the beautiful scenery and the noise in the background it was still very easy to hear everything you were saying and I appreciate the pictures that you popped up every now and again. Were you in Washington State? I love this video too because I just got a haircut supposed to be a shag and it's that medium-length drag down look I hate it! I paid a lot of money for it and I just don't know what to do I just had it done like 3 or 4 days ago.

Lorraine Riley: As always appreciate your tips. Very helpful. Powerful scenery. Amazing.x

Aundria B.: Gorgeous footage, but the water noise is very, very distracting and interferes with what you are saying. Also, I understand how having layers higher up on the head/crown draws the eye up and can have a more youthful appearance, but it would be helpful to see a few examples of this to really understand how this actually looks when it's done right. I have a round face with no neck and medium hair length, and am struggling to find a flattering style that I don't have to spend a ton of time and effort styling. Thanks.

Judie Woodward: More great tips. The adventures are breath taking. The adventures need to be longer.Love all you do.

Mama Bear: This is the most unique content I've come across lately, 10/10

Kathy Blake: Agree on the slant! But not too severe!❤️

Brenda D.: Great videos & I wish I was in your chair! It's hard to find a good hairstylist now days.

Tiffiny Sue: the struggle is real with this big mop of hair i got. i just went blonde because i felt drab. did it myself. i did ok. but i still look old

Rockysmom1234: Beautiful video and I love your hair tips!

Sabsa 70: Not always commenting, but always watching here . Love your videos, but your tips are the main reason and most important. Your hikes/views are a great bonus. Love from Germany, Sabine

bella0418: That view is amazing!! I love layering my hair it's my favourite. So what's the difference between Layers and Long Layers?

Rita Merrill: Absolutely stunning video, thank you for sharing these magnificent views!

Stacy B: I love that you take us with you on your gorgeous nature hikes! It was such beautiful cinematography! The pictures you showed us of haircuts also very helpful! Thank you.

Mary Albert: Justin, I have a layer bob haircut. I style my hair every day. I would live to see you show us your way of styling a layer Bob haircut please. If you’ve already done this please share the link thank you. Amazing views on your hike!!

Lyn Wilhelm: Thank you so much. This video is absolutely breathtaking.

Christine Mack: Magnificent hike! My question is why does my color fade so much :( I have dark brown color treated hair that fades to a redish hue middle to ends. I color my hair between salon visits, wash once a week and blow dry/heat style. Could you recommend a good heat protectant, maybe that's my issue? Thank you!

Linda Marocco: I am speechless with the video at the point of the fires onto the waterfall!!!.. you outdid yourself!!!!!.. unbelievable!!!!

Linda Marocco: Awesome tips and amazing cinematic experience!!!.. thank you so much, my guy!!!!

Maria: Omg, one of those not so good pics was exactly what me hair looks like. Thanks for the great videos!

Susan St. Louis: Is it important to pay attention to the scalp, separately? I am learning that as I age, I prefer to wash more frequently to treat my scalp. Thanks!

fadnama: Your hiking videos are making me extremely homesick! Greetings from a PNW girl in Toronto

QueenCoCoaMocha: You can hear me saying wow! But that cinematography was breathtaking

Professor Webster: People are so mean to you in these comments smh. Love the content, even though I’m only 22 thanks for the tips

nisiepie: When I go back to my hairdresser, I want to get my "home diy bob" cleaned up. I have an oval face, but am a little overweight, so I don't want to draw attention to my under chin. I feel like I want my bob to be a little bit layered in the back, and angle a bit in the front to hide my chin a little. I want a cool girl bob, and am so afraid that my bob will end up looking dated, and make me look like the lady that wants to "talk to the manager" LOL

astrid: Scenery beautiful but a bit random also, the sound of water is a bit loud and distracts me too. Anyway, the vid is so helpful! Thank you so much! You pretty much covered everything i needed to know

longandwindingroad: Love yr format, tips and appreciate your videos.

Cynthia Mallon: Your videos are so informative.iv shared with many stylist your advice is something to be shared thank you much

Sherry Schumacher: I am pretty new to the party and am really enjoying your videos!

Tomar Crauswell: Every single time you take us hiking I'm a little closer to packing up and moving there! I'm in Alabama and it's beautiful here but not like it is there.

Jo Whitney: GORGEOUS shots with great tips!!

Angela island: Thanks for another awesome video!

Corinne Burque: Another great all around video!

Susan Chaney: Gorgeous video, I really need to get to the salon!!

Linda Oliver: Love your information

Third Sister: WOW ! Beautiful scenery - New England ? Reminds me of Vermont or New Hampshire. So glad I found your channel - very informative !

Debra: So so worth it! Great Everything

Claudia L. Gonzalez: In your tutorials we go from attention to meditation….it’s great but probably less is more in order to avoid distraction. Maybe walking and showing less! Can you explain the facts about layering and texturizing???? Can you demostrare that? I have a lot of beautiful wavy hair and when We discuss layering I see that they can’t stop texturizing to make the layers softly one ot tip of the othe. I am not talking about the texturizing scissors which make hair soooo frágil and make eventually hair grow in a bulkier manner. I am talking about the technique used by cutting the ends in a pointy manner?…… please can you explain the above which is an issue I debate with endless hairstylist. If texturizing of layering is bad. They mess style, hair and mind!,,,,,,! THANK YOU❤️

Anna Antonino: WoW... what a view.... I bet camera cannot show the reality.... Thank you for the hair tips Justin.

Holly CAMPBELL: How do you keep a nice shine on hair ?

Loraine Hitt: Where are these places? It would be great to have the names of the locales! Gorgeous.

SC Smurfette: Thank you!

Jayne Cooper: Justin. Love your videos. All the way from the UK.

Jennifer Ann Fox: I like his videos for information but honestly all the drama in the outside going on is very frustrating to hear and have to weed through to get the basic information presented about hair. If I wanted to watch nature I would go to videos about nature.

Leslie: Great tips. But...I have trouble finding someone who can do that on my curly hair. =(

Linda Marocco: Can’t wait to watch this, I have medium length hair!!!!!still!!!

Alison Jetmar: You are so cool Justin. I get so much from your vids. Thank you

Gloria Piccchetti: I can't stand hair dressers who think women have to chop their hair off to look younger.

dawn Bonus: so worth it‼️

Mia Anstine: Do you have your camera attached to your backpack? If so, how is it connected?

Martha Trevino: I would have loved to be able to listen to the information as it seems that you are very knowledgeable. The noise was distracting and annoying as I tried to really follow your comments. Trying to do too much.

Linda Marocco: Yup, mine does the triangle, too!!!

alex anokhin: Thank you

Loree Lattik: Probably some great info in this video. However, producer didn’t think it was worthy of being heard clearly. I appreciate the effort of the speaker.

Aleta Rossi-Thomas: Great tips for hair. I do have to add, though, the background noise was really distracting..

Jeanne Dodd: How can I find a hair stylist in my area who can cut my hair to my face shape?

Nurce Sultan: Thanks

friendlybello: Hm. As much as I like going on hikes, it would be better to have hair models with examples of do's and dont's.

Susan St. Louis: Thank you!

mony heiss: Amazing... Kisses from Portugal.

Dawn Liphard: Its Tuesday how do I know its Tuesday because I just received notification, a JH video has been uploaded. Love the view and today's tips.

Linda Marocco: I can look like Marlo Thomas in That Girl if I am not careful!!!... I agree with the flip, tip!!!

Judy M: Just a tip...too much background noise and it sounded like a repeating tape, rather than a natural sound. Love the scenery tho!

AngeLight: Wow breathtaking waterfalls!!

Vash Andree: I wish this was done over so I can hear it

Gina Harris: What about fine, thin hair?

brat: There's no age of haircuts like I said if you look old and your skin looks old you gonna look old

Ellie0225: I just want to ask you... Where are you going to make these videos? It reminds me of Mt. Rainier in Washington state.

Jane Burke: Thanks Justin

CocoatMidnight: Amazing waterfall Justin. Thank you

Nat 20: Wow spectacular

bn ok: I need you to be my hair dresser.
