So long hair can definitely help you look more youthful, but it doesn't inherently help you look more youthful, there's some things that you need to know some tips, some things that may be going on that actually can make long hair make you look older, so yeah, I'm Gon na talk about those we share all those tips in this video, so yeah, let's jump to it, okay, so here's the thing: there are some things that you want to stay away from doing with long hair and there's some tips that I can give you about Long hair that will help you actually look more youthful with long hair and by the way, if you're new to me, my name is Justin Hickox I've been doing hair for 25 years and what I like to do on this channel is share tips, things that I've Learned over that 25 years to hopefully make your hair a bit easier for you. So if hair is important to you make sure you don't miss out on subscribing and hitting that notification bell, so you get notified every Tuesday when I bring out a brand new video and you're, not gon na want to miss this video watch to the end, because I'Ll tell you what let me talk about some things about color. If you're doing color or you've been thinking about color. There are some tips that you're gon na want to know and some ideas for you. You can really bring up that color game and adding that youthfulness. So hey, why don't we start talking about some tips and some mistakes? Okay, so my first tip is all about length now hold on. Don'T hang me here, I'm not saying you have to cut your hair short. I know there is a video I did and I'll link it right there. If you haven't seen it that made it look like I thought. If you're gon na look more youthful, you got ta cut your hair short, that's just not true! That was wrong in the way that I presented that video. That was my fault, but nonetheless I don't believe that at all here's, what my big point about having hair? That'S too long is and any length the length determines how you cut the layering. It determines the kinds of layers that your hair can support. It determines how short you can cut your shortest layer if you've got hair. That'S too long. What will happen is, even if you layer it, the shortest layer, is still going to be long hair and therefore it can be very heavy, and only what happens is it gets too hard to cut shape into your hair and shape is what accentuates things about your Face shape that you want to accentuate it's, what gives you movement? It gets. What gives you texture it which? What gives you softness it's? What really does all of the things that are so nice about long hair and ultimately make it work and function better for you. So it's not to say that you can't have long hair, it's just to say that there is a point where it becomes too long to really do anything more than just have hair, and that brings me onto mistake number two. I mistake number two with long hair. If you're wanting to look more youthful is actually completely ignoring the idea of doing layers, one big thing that layering does is, as your hair gets longer, especially if it's got any sort of texture like weight or or curl, or if it's thick it'll have a tendency To grow very triangularly, and what that does is it brings the eye down the length being able to add luring in will help alleviate some of that bolt at the bottom of your hair. It'Ll start breaking up the length and creating more volume in the top of your hair and ultimately taking some of that triangular shape out and creating more of the shape that you want. It'S gon na be more flattering for you: okay, the next mistake kind of piggybacks off the layering, and that is having your hair just too stiff. You don't want to overly spray your hair with a ton of hairspray to the point where it's kind of just a helmet on your head, and the reason for that is because the whole point of having longer hair and having it layered is to give it some Movement and to give it some flow, so when you spray it too stiff, it doesn't look natural, it doesn't seem normal and it ends up just kind of looking very rigid and that, in my opinion, takes away all of the kind of youthful movement texture, elegant kind Of look to it and just makes it very kind of rigid and stiff, and just not quite as well beautiful, okay and now, speaking of being too rigid. That takes me into the next mistake, which is never ever changing your style. What I mean by this is I'm a big proponent, asking in my clients, I always say: don't fix it if it's not broken right, if it's not broken everything's working well, for you, fantastic, don't just out of the blue decide! Well, then, I must need to do something different, because I just need to change things, and this is just getting old. I'M not saying that what I'm saying is still looking at something that worked twenty-five years ago, twenty years ago or whatever it is, and doing the exact same thing. Without considering the option of maybe doing something different. You can take a bunch of different styles that you like different aspects of them hey. I would love to have long hair that look like this or I like the bangs on this, or I like this about this or whatever it is. Take those attributes into your stylist and talk to them about how you can utilize those things that you like and maybe do something different with your hair, that switches things up a little bit keeps its current keeps it. You makes it make sense for you, but ultimately maybe it's something that just gives it a little bit more of a current and youthful appearance. My whole point with it is just to say, if you're completely ignoring the idea, that there are other options out there and you're totally unwilling to do anything different. Then it's going to eventually get to a place where it does look dated because styles, don't last forever. It'S just as simple as that feel like I'm gon na get my head chopped on for that one. But look that's how I feel so. I'M gon na stand behind it and, while I'm on the route of getting my head chopped off, why not dive into the deep end a little bit deeper here we go color it's my next mistake. I already hear everybody freaking out I'll, never color, my hair, you don't need to do color to look younger, etcetera, etcetera. All of this stuff, I'm not saying you have to do color. I actually love salt, pepper, hair, I'm not coloring mine, and I don't think that all of my clients need the color of their hair. I have got a lot of women with salt, pepper hair. That, I think, looks amazing. It can be very striking. Here is my thought so follow me with it. There are options out there for salt-and-pepper hair that can really glamorize that salt-and-pepper. For instance, I have a lot of clients that have salt-and-pepper that we actually go back in and add some that darker color in the right areas just to make the white pieces pop a little bit more and stand out. It'S very striking. It'S a beautiful color that doesn't ever look like it grows out it just you put it in and then eventually six months, seven months later, if it's done right, you just realized wait a minute that color is gone. Hey, if you want to do it again, you do it again. If you decide not to do color. That is fine too. I feel like I never gated that well, hopefully, Oh see in the comment section. So, okay. So, let's move on to some tips, but I'm kind of like I'm bored of this background. Let me take you guys into the salon. Give me something different to look at okay. So that's better, and it's just getting born before me. I don't know so here are some things to think about when you're thinking about doing color or if you're, in a place where you're already doing color now dark hair isn't wrong. Dark hair is great, but going too dark can actually be very harsh. More often than not, when we're talking about aging we're talking about getting older, we're also talking about going into more salt and pepper, so we're gon na have some of that salt that is gon na contrast, the grow out of whatever color we decide to go. So if we are going really really really black or super dark, it's gon na be very contrasting. When you look at white roots versus your black color, you also can just have some lighter pieces around the face that just helps to again add a little bit more brightness to your face and can create the illusion of a little bit more youth. Another tip is to make sure that you're using the right, shampoo conditioners as we age are more often than not. Our hair texture is going to change and many times they can get more coarse. Now that means that that coarse hair could have a tendency to look frizzy so just paying attention to what we're using as far as shampoos and conditioners, go so that we don't use a product. That'S too strong burns that also dries our hair out and makes it look more brittle. Those things are very important to pay attention to now there are so many textures out there. There are so many different kinds of hair out there that I can't give you a blanket answer as to which shampoo and conditioner you need to be using. But here's what I can say stripping shampoo, clarifying shampoo stuff, like that. That'S meant to strip things out of hair, using that too often can be really hard on your hair. It can strip your hair of necessary nutrients that your hair actually needs. So I wouldn't be using anything like that more than once a week at the most, and it really depends on how often you're using products and how much products you're using and how often those products build up. And you need them to be stripped out of your hair when it goes to conditioner. We need to be paying attention to the intense conditioners, this really deep conditioners. We want to pay attention to those and be wary of using those too often, because they also, oddly enough, can be damaging to your hair. They can be too strong for your hair, okay and my next tip deals with bangs they're great for helping us hide those beautiful things that we earn that come up or in this general area. Alright, I won't call them. Wrinkles will call them laugh lines, smile lines, all the good stuff, yeah. Well, those things if you are concerned about them bangs can help you alleviate that concern. Now, just a heads up. If you haven't already watched my series, I filmed the entire series three-part series. All about how to figure out what your face shape is, so you know what bangs to wear what bangs are best for you: how to trim your bangs at home. I'M gon na link that right up here, so you can check that out. If you haven't seen it many times, I see when people have longer hair part of the reason that they have it longer is because they like to pull it up into a ponytail or back up off of their face. Having some softness in the front to come down is a really nice addition to that. Overall, look so it allows you a little bit of softness and peace and some fun, but still allows you to pull your hair back and actually makes that back style or that one tell have a little bit more of a style look which again adds a little Bit more to that youthful appearance, okay, so there still is one last tip that I have. If you're gon na have longer hair, that's gon na help it create more of a youthful appearance that tip deals with the actual styling process. Now there is an inherit amount of styling that goes along with having longer hair the fact the matter is as we age again. Unfortunately, many times our hair is going to change texture and many times that texture can mean that it's going to look a little bit more coarse, which can translate to the illusion of being a little bit more frizzy, the smoother we make that longer, hair and smoother. We make the ends whether we lay down that texture, the more youthful and vibrant it's going to look just is what it is, and I also realize that that can be overwhelming for some people. Maybe you don't know how to use a flatiron or a round brush. I actually did a video on longer hair and how to utilize all the tools, a step-by-step process, I'll, go ahead and link that one right here for you to check out it's a wealth of information as to how you can style your hair at home. So make sure you go ahead and check that out if you've worried about it, but definitely take the time to style your hair, if it's gon na be longer, it's gon na make a massive difference in how youthful that looks. Alright. Well, hey! That'S all my tips for looking more youthful with longer hair. I hope that helped a little bit. I would love to hear what your thoughts are. Like I'm curious, what have you done with your hair as it's been longer that you felt really made a difference like what did you feel like made? You look more youthful. What do you love about? Having your long hair comment below and let me know more importantly, let everybody else know because you might be sharing a tip that I didn't think about that somebody else might gain some value from so definitely share that below. When I bring out a brand new video, you have a great afternoon and we'll see you next week, 5

EM MCM: I'm 53 year old with hair down to my waist, I don't color it, my natural color is brown (I'm Mexican) extra fine, (my daughter says it looks fake b/c at my age is rare to have this kind of hair) just getting some gray hair here and there, shiny lustrous and healthy. I get a trim or bangs whenever i feel like it. I don't care if I look older. I LOVE my hair!!

Felicia M: Im 51 and love long hair so I needed this. So tired of stylists always wanting to do the mommy hair cut on my long hair. I also don't think that turning 50 means you have to cut all your hair off! I love his suggestions. This might be my new favorite channel.

Undefined User: I really agree with everything in this video. There are some really good tips and advise. I do have a question, though and I'll kind of explain before I ask it. 18 months ago I stopped coloring my grey hair. (I've been almost 80% grey since my early 30's.) The thing is, my hair grows insanely fast and I'd have a week of coloring that looked good and then after that this distinct line of demarcation between the dark dyed hair and my incoming grey/silver. It was a battle I was never going to win, so I have finally embraced it. When I first decided to stop coloring, I had my hairdresser lighten my hair and actually add in grey highlights. This really helped it look so much better while I transitioned over to all natural color. What a journey! Anyway, I just share this story so you will understand my questions and comments better. After this was all said and done, I realize that my hair really isn't grey at all, but instead a striking shade of white and silver with a bit of dark lingering underneath. It's a beautiful combination and I wish I had changed over to it years ago. However, I find that when I use any kind of heat styling tool, it causes a yellowing to the hair; Even on the lowest heat settings. Now, I don't have to use heat tools, and I don't most of the time, but I work in an office setting and there are times I just want to look my best, like for presentations, meeting new clients, etc. I find that the heat tools just provide me with a smoother, silkier look to my hair, but the trade-off is the yellow tinge that results, even with the use of a heat protective spray. . I can combat the yellow with a silver shampoo and/or leave-in toner treatments, but there is such a fine edge to leaving it on the hair long enough to get rid of the yellow, but not too long that I end up with a lavender hue that I don't like. Is there something that I can use to just prevent the yellowing in the first place?

Michelle Lehn: These videos are great , one suggestion could you quiet down the background music it’s hard to focus on what you are saying. :)

Vashti Ramsaroop: This is the 1st video of yours that I've seen, and I'm so grateful that I saw this. The incredible caliber of content, the photos to illustrate your point, and the range of tips that you offer make this a must see video! Actually, I watched it twice. How I wish that I could see you. Look forward to checking out more of your work. Thank you for the fantastic video! ❤

tara: Going too dark can be aging, but so can hair that is far too light. I have very fair Irish skin and my hair has always been the palest shade of blonde. When I was in my 20s and my skin was perfect, it was okay to have skin and hair matching in color. Now I need more contrast to look healthy. I use a strawberry blonde henna to make my hair a pale shade of red. This looks much more youthful than the pale blonde. I also sometimes add highlights around the front of my hair (it's a myth that you can't put bleach over henna; you absolutely can, as long as your henna is high quality and does not contain metallic salts). I've been doing it this way for almost 15 years and I'm constantly stopped and asked about the color.

sparkstrish: Love the tip on “highlighting” by adding dark into salt/pepper hair!!

Maureen Stanley: Would love to see quick updos for those of us over 50 with long hair and must wear it up for work...

Michelle SFO: I'm so glad I stumbled across your video when looking for tips on correcting layered hair. I liked my hair long (as I love pulling up), but as I've gotten older - and gained some weight - I noticed layering my hair to give shape and movement was more flattering on me. Otherwise, the long, uniform length would pull down my face (accentuating what gravity was already doing to my face) and making me look tired. The layers made me appear fresh & alert and gave me a more youthful appearance. There is definitly an ideal flattering length on me that I won't go past.

GoingRogue: I started graying at 14. I'm all silver now and always get compliments. I love my hair, I'm growing it out and didn't want any layers, now I realize this is a mistake. Thank you for the video!

Maria Norris: You forgot the biggest mistake of all: Insisting on wearing long hair when it's thin and/or damages. No one should wear long hair unless it's healthy with reasonable thickness.

Marian S: I wish he would of talked about fine hair and it getting “finer” as you age. Otherwise very informative.

Joie McCumbee, Sr: I have had bangs for 20 years and recently grew them out and cut in long layers. The extra softness around my face with some chin length layers made such a difference. Movement and shape is definitely key.

Loretta Spadaccini: Thanks Justin. What a kind and considerate person you are. Great advice I can relate to. I am 55 with long hair. Still colouring. Have gone lighter but I am very tempted to go to Salt and pepper with dark highlights like you’ve said. I know that styling to make my hair smoother makes a huge difference to my overall youthful look. I will check out more of your videos.

Vidyut Gore: I keep my hair long to keep it out of my face by simply tying it into a knot. No accessories, no fuss. Looks a touch severe, but works somewhat with my face. For a more stylish look, I simply open the knot, run my fingers through the hair and it already has waves from being in the knot for so long. Not perfect styling, but a worthy compromise for next to no time spent on making it look good. Hair is straight and very smooth, so I don't even need to comb it to keep it tangle free for the most part. If it starts tangling, I need a new haircut. I mostly manage how it looks when not tied up with a good haircut. It is very forgiving hair. If it stops looking good, time to cut again. Length is always slightly more than I need to tie a knot securely, but I do have layers, etc. I like your idea of bangs - this may make the knot look less severe and not add any "work" to keeping hair looking good. More style for same/no effort.

Tiu Tau Tilhi: For me, just growing out my blunt bob (with a fringe) to long hair in the past years, now being 45, has made a big difference. I was hoping to hear more colouring tips in general, as not everyone goes salt and pepper at all. I'm also happy to notice that the "you must cut your hair short and auntie-style after the age X" has slowly faded away. I love my long hair, and learning to use flat irons next; thanks for the video for it. Future wishes: would like to see more example images and visuals. Thanks for all the fine hair info, too. subscribed.

Gena Miller: Hi Justine, love from NYC- One thing that really works for curly long hair is deep conditioning with a hair mask. I like the Curl Mix line and Shea Moisture products. One thing that I love about having longer hair is the movement and how it feels when the wind is blowing through it. Peace out xoxogena

Nancy Cook: Excellent information Justin! I’ve spent the last couple years growing my hair from a pixie cut to now collar bone length. I feel more feminine with the longer length and now just thinking about getting some layers to add dimension.

Amber S: I just discovered your videos a few days ago. Loving all the tips ❤️ I'm 40 and have had really long hair for years. I cut it every so often but always end up growing it back out. I wish I could have layers but my hair is way too long. So I stick to angles around the face and a side bang. Makes me feel like I have somewhat of a style lol.

krystal Hibachi: So glad I found this. I'm doing high lights and low lights and the last year I keep having my stylist layer more which is much more complimentary & definitely makes my hair look fuller. Love that you used younger/ older models to show variety as well. Thank you so much for the great tips. Definitely subscribing ps. My girlfriend is having issues with hair breakage, thinning, & coming out. Naturally curly and no health issues. Not sure if you have videos for something like this that could help her.

Dorina Tudisco: Thank you for addressing something I’ve been wondering about! Putting dark highlights in salt and pepper hair to spruce it up. My hair is more silver on top at the crown, and dark brown underneath. So it looks a little flat. Now I just need to find a colorist who won’t mess it up putting in a bit of color Also I love the tip of having piecey bangs instead of a blunt bang and how it can make ones hair look nicer up. I want to do that

traci silverson: So happy I found you on YouTube! Loved the flat iron tips, practiced today. My next appointment is Friday, after watching this video I loved the idea with some bangs or a little layering around my face. I tend to wear my hair pulled back a lot w the FL heat. Until the next video:)

Lupita Kall: WoW! Just found your channel and it is so refreshing to see someone who discusses having long hair and being older...thank you so much for your content!!! I am 54 yrs. old, my original hair color is black, my grays frame my face mostly, but the rest of my hair is still black, and I also have a grey streak which runs from the crown on the right side all the way down, which I've had since I was little and became more apparent as I grew up...I love my long hair and it is hard to find someone in my area who understands long hair, how to cut it and understands the texture change - mine went from sleek straight to course and wavy. I feel if I go with a younger hairstylist they tend to want to cut shorter, and if I go with an older hairstylist they seem to be stuck in the 80's. Thank you for the great ideas...and look forward to watching the videos you mentioned on bangs! And on how to cut your own hair! Thank you again!!!

Marsha Paitsel: Great ideas for older women with long hair. Highlights and layers made a huge difference in my thick hair. I'd love to see a video on how to style long side swept bangs, especially for those with heavier hair.

Mary Stevens: Great tips for long hair! I totally agree that styling is the key to a polished, and good products make all the difference for a youthful look. The video on fringes (bangs) was so helpful. I wish I lived in Portland, I’d race to your salon in a flash. Keep your tips coming

L. Nichols: I just stumbled on his channel today and find his info incredibly helpful. The one thing that sticks out in his videos so far, is the need to justify his advice……..Based on a lot of the comments below, I can totally understand why. Seriously, I’m grateful as a 48 year old woman that someone is even addressing aging hair. The last thing I’m going to do is blast his opinion or the content. I’ll take the nuggets of advice that apply to me and be happy. I’ll never understand the people that nitpick every video. It’s quite sad, really. @justin hickox, keep up the great advice and videos. I for one, am grateful.

Bonnie Crowell: I happened upon this video today and it was very helpful, I am 53 and decided during all this Covid crap to let my hair grow longer, I have worn it in a stacked bob for years and I have been afraid to change my style but feel this is a good time to do it because I can always cut it if I don’t like it. I think I’m going to try your suggestion of adding bangs, I don’t really like the way I look with all my hair pulled back off my face so adding bangs might be the answer for me. Thanks for this great video and I am going to check out the rest of videos too!

Pamela Atwood: I’ve let my hair grow very long and I’m 72. When I wore it a little longer I would blow it straight. I have bangs that I think soften my face. I keep it colored an Auburn color that lets me continue wearing jewel colors. Since I have grown it very long I curl it or do a Mermaid curl every other week. I wash my hair about every 4-5 days and find that my hair feels more healthy than when I use to wash it every other day. I liked listening to your video. It was good hearing someone talk about long hair on mature women.

Michelle Louise Stamp: This was really useful, thank-you. I have just turned 50 and realise I haven't changed my brown, mid length hair for years! It does make you nervous to change though! I don't have bangs so I will check out your video now for bangs. Thank-you!

D. H.: Greetings Justin- Could you please address fine hair, the styles that might be best to make it seem like more hair or maybe more movement. Enjoy your videos, your practical approach and wealth of knowledge!! Thanking you!! Ciao- ;-)

Trumblocity: I have super thick hair medium length. My stylist has been trying to get me to do an undercut. I live in the southwest desert and thick long hair is so hot in the summer. I finally did it and it has changed my life. I can pull my hair up on the crown and nobody ever sees the undercut. I used to have to wear it up in a pony or clip which doesn't work that great with thick hair. That's the tip. Literally half my head is shaved, no one can see it, and I still have a ton of hair. Best of all, it's cool to wear and no more triangle head.

Glenda James: I think using highlights and low lights gives you a more youthful look.

Mary jo Regier: Thanks Justin! Your tips are great. I’ve transitioned to grey hair over the last year(couldn’t keep up with needing to colour every two weeks). My is surprisingly very healthy and shiny now...who knew...anyway my biggest concern now is the cut. I think more then ever I need a fun, funky style. Really afraid of the old lady bob(

Shirvee Hinchey: I love my long hair and there are several reasons why. First the bony structure of my head doesn’t support short hair. I found that out the hard way. I just need more “fluff” to overcome that. Secondly I have a fantastic hair stylist. Actually she doesn’t style my hair in so much that she keeps my length from getting to long for my age. She respects me but advises me. She keeps it trimmed and softly layered. She’s been taking care of me for 35+ years. And she is the best colorist I know. You’d best not miss an appointment or it’ll be awhile before you get back in! She’s that good. What I’m saying is know yourself, find someone really good, and make regular appointments if you are able to afford them and be thankful you have that person. Last thought: sometimes I will come up with an idea of a new look I want. She ponders it and if she thinks it will work for me she’ll agree. If not I respect her answer. She’s never failed me. And my husband always loves my hair. That says a lot at 74 years of age. Enjoyed your presentation!

Debi Carol: Thanks for all of the great info! I am 50 and I like my long hair but I do try to change up the cut and color every so often. I don't have much grey but my hair is naturally super dark brown and I have noticed over the years that it is too dark for me, so a lighter color kind of softens the blow that nature is creating on my face.

Suzan Plumstead: Liked your video and a good confirmation of what I'm doing with my longer, fuller s&p hair: wash, condition, serum then towel dry and let air dry in a loose bun. Sure it takes a while and the results are worth it. Silky soft and shinier hair!

Mich 0910: I loved this video. I'm 46 and have really long hair. I am constantly struggling with whether or not I should keep it long or cut it off. I agree, "don't get stuck in your best year ever" and try to evolve with your style.

Caroline Bracero: Hi! Just popped in and your title of the video lured me in! I changed my style from long and dull to shaggy layers and bangs! I absolutely love it! I have thick dark red hair and the layers lightened the weight as well as softened the look. I’m too scared to cut my own bangs so still going to salon. Thank you for all your tips!

Shelly Stapp: I am over 50 and my hair is long for the first time in many, many years. Of course, I have noticed that the ends get dryer quicker. What has helped is putting leave-in conditioner on the ends only and sometimes even applying that to dry hair as I style it a day or two after washing (no heat while it's wet though).

light: I’m not a hairstylist , however I totally agree with all your tips! I mean everything you said is just the honest truth! ❤️

lightworker Andrea: I have pretty much rocked long hair for the majority of my life. For me personally, my hair is my spiritual antenna so I want to keep growing it out. I take biotin to help with hair growth and put different types of oils on the ends like coconut oil and rosemary oil. I also stay away from any type of heat on my hair unless it's a special occasion. If anything, my long hair makes me look younger. Long hair will never go out of style, it's like a classic black dress in your wardrobe. I do appreciate the tips even though I don't completely agree with you. Much love and light!

C B: Hey Justin, I really appreciate these informative videos you have! I was wondering if you can give out tips on how to make narrow heads look fuller and less... Long? I have long straight hair and it's hard to make my head look less narrow.

clipinqueen: I think you make excellent points and good advice. Thanks for doing this video. I've always wondered if going gray makes it 'easier' to bleach hair? I find it so much easier to go blonder now (49 yrs old); does the lack of pigment in the hair make it easier to bleach out? Thanks for all your tips!

Katrin Southern: Awesome tips, thanks Justin! My tip (& actually an earlier one from you!): The shine my hairdresser creates regardless of my colour, style (straight/curly or structured/messy) and that I'm growing it. Takes at least 10 years off just there! I work hard to recreate her way (and yours!) of adding shine, and now will add these tips too.

Catherine Turner: Thank you! I'm getting my hair cut in 10 days. It's been long and straight for a long time. I can't wait to have bangs and some sassy layers again!

Renée Soli: I started going gray young. To keep up with the roots I went blonde at 40. Still having to dye my hair every two weeks looking like a skunk often. Decided to grow my silver hair out at 45 and got a Halle Berry hair cut. My hair is now long at 55 years old. I'm probably 90% silver with the dark being the longest layers in the back. I'm really liking the silver hair!

Laura Cox: As long as the topic is keeping long hair as we age, it is worth it to point out that for many ( if not most) women, hair thins with age. Hair follicles also stop doing what they used to do. Often the hair at the back of the head may continue to grow long, while the hair at the sides of the head stops growing at a shorter length. The result on women who refuse to notice this is a long, skimpy tail of hair down the center back, with wispy sides. I have had long hair all my life, and I understand wanting to keep it, but I have come to realize that the head of hair actually looks much thicker and healthier when the length is cut straight across at a length that all the hair can still grow to.

msjoanofthearc: Thank you Justin, your vids are great and I enjoy your delivery and outward confidence as an authority on hair and styling.

Lesa Davis: Loved your content, Great advice for us women who have been conditioned to believe our age dictates the length . Little side note: change was misspelled.

Rosemary: Great content, I just subscribed. Appreciate your demonstration of how bangs work when pulling hair back. I have to tie all my hair up out of the way at work and I know it's kind of a harsh look. I will watch your bangs videos and see what you say about bangs for a low hairline with glasses (yikes, lol) thanks and thanks for considering eliminating the background music, not just turning it down <3

AZSinbad: I had long hair for many years. I finally decided to cut it off. It was starting to look straggly, at least to me. I went with an asymmetrical bob with a stacked back. My hair now feels fuller and even looks like there is more than when it was long. I have always had baby fine hair and felt better with it short to mid length. It is now just above the collar in the back with side down almost to my chin. I think this look does make me look years younger. Hair styles do depend on your hair and how it behaves, curly or straight. Not everyone can wear long hair nor short hair. I find just inbetween looks good on me but I still love the shag and pixie cuts. Plan to try one of those next. You just have to try different styles and have fun with them. I always say if it doesnt turn out to your liking you can always grow it back

Julie Petersen: I’m 49. I stopped coloring my hair during the quarantine when all the salons were closed, and what I’ve actually discovered is that my natural hair color is more youthful looking than the dye job! Now, I literally only have 2 gray hairs, and that definitely helps, but I think that sometimes as your face ages, coloring your hair makes it look like your hair is too young for your face ~ which looks too fake for me!Just my two cents!

Pathos: balayage helped me to look younger. I started doing it 5 years ago and think it was the best decision. it gives some movement and volume. also, by experimenting a bit with the length I discovered that at my current age I prefer having my hair 5-10cm shorter than I used to have earlier. it is still long hair but makes me feel younger and more stylish.

Adele Trimble: At 56 and having nightmare frizzy/curly hair my entire life, and having hairstylists wanting to do 1 thing: straighten, I’ve finally come to accept the frizz and be proud of my wild, natural style. Strangely, I get compliments frequently, because even though it’s frizzy, despite having used almost every product available, the layered cut keeps it full and looking like I have more hair than I do. I keep it well conditioned and focus on dimensional color. I think “frizzy” is actually a texture that people have been made to feel bad about.

Brenda Starcher: Thank you so much, Justin. So many great ideas on how to find the right hair cut to look younger. You're awesome!

LIZ Martin: Hi Justin, I’m so happy I found your channel! All my life I’ve straighten or blow dry my hair to eliminate my curls. But last year right before the lockdown (CA) I’ve decided to let it be natural. I have 3B &3A (Italian/Greek/Mexican), medium thickness & tons of it. Due to pandemic my hair is too long one length, which I hate because it’s very heavy. Would like to cut it to shoulder length with layers, that’s my go to but in the past I never allowed my curls to show. I’ve finally for the first time love my spiral curls but don’t know if layers would work. Can you please do a video for curly gals, options? Please. Thank you. Stay Safe & Well!

Michelle Isabel Duggan: Fabulous video! And I always say bangs are cheaper than Botox! I’ll be getting my hair professionally highlighted until I’m dead lol. I also love playing with fashion colors sometimes - not my entire head but just some underneath bits. It’s fun and keeps things interesting.

Susan A: Lol he's so worried hes going to say something to offend someone. What have you people done to him?? All good man!

Janice E: Everything you said applies to me! Now I know exactly what I want! Thank you!!

Joyce Smith: Great video Justin! I always like to hear hair tips on any length hair. My hair is very fine so no long hair for me. I wear a bob & it does make my hair look thicker. I would like to see videos on easy ways to foil hi light & low light very long hair so it looks natural. Thank you!

Rocketsandrabbits: Oh my gosh your heart for people is so sweet. I can tell from the video but also your responses. Thanks for doing what you do <3

Melissa Peck: Very helpful. So happy I found your channel. 50 is knocking at my door and I always had long, thin, stringy, blonde hair. I now live in Florida and it gets frizzy so easy now. My biggest secret has been finding a new hair stylist that understands my hair and I absolutely trust her. I now have that medium shaggy, textured kinda bob cut that I only wash once a week and I get so many compliments. I was actually told by another female at the store that I'm sexy!!!!! I have a 23 year old daughter and people think she's my little sister!!! I can't wait to use some of your tricks and tips to help me maintain my hair between seeing my stylist. Thank you from an almost fabulous fifty!!

Allie Perez: Thank you Justin for your video. I'm 43 yrs old, I stopped styling my hair cause I've been having problems with hair loss. I use to have a crazy amount of hair and it was very nice, but not anymore. I don't know what to do. I've been taking supplements but maybe it's my stress. When I take a shower it's disturbing how much my hair sheds. It makes me sad! I really enjoyed your video. I just found you

Joanie Miller: I’m 55 and most of my life I’ve had short hair. Now I’m growing it out and it’s laying on my shoulders. I like it longer most of the time. My question is what do you think of dry shampoo once a week to keep from washing it everyday. I find washing it everyday takes the color out too fast.

J E: Great tips, thank you. I have mid length brown hair and do color it, but I let it go as long as possible before I need a touch up. I was a fortunate one, starting to go gray in my 40's and I keep asking my stylist when I can just do it! The gray is a bit splotchy, so maybe not yet. I am near 50 and think I could totally rock a gray stripe at least! LOL Yes, I have noticed more frizzy/dryness, so I appreciate the product tips. I do love my haircut, it's the best style I have ever had. But I am always willing to make a change. My hair used to be pin straight, but after 2 pregnancies, my hair is now wavy. I still haven't figured out how to style it with the waves. That has probably been the hardest to figure out. I am so used to styling it straight. Any tips about what I should look into? Thanks!

Angel P: I found after washing and letting my hair dry for a while, I use large Velcro rollers. When I first taken them out, my hair is a little too puffy, but it settles down and actually looks fantastic several hours later or the next day. I can put a pony tail in with fabric scrunching to quicken this process. Something about the Velcro rollers smooths all the frizzies in my salt n pepper hair. No heat needed which is a plus. Thank you.

Susan Chaney: Thanks Justin, great video. My hair is past my shoulders and wavy/frizzy. If I get layers (and I did just get a couple) it really tends to get frizzier in that area. At night I wear a loose high "bun" and I can just get up and go cause it keeps m hair smooth for the most part. But I have that triangle look too. So I have a dilemma for sure!

Marcy Jackson: I decided a few years ago to stop doing full colour, and just use high and low lights to blend with my incoming grey. It is way less maintenance for me not having to have a root re-touches every 2-3 weeks. I also find keeping some volume on the top and and a bend in my hair with layers really helps to camouflage or complement the grey nicely. And I agree, keeping your hair hydrated makes it more youthful looking.

Brenda & Don: I liked this video. It was somewhat informative. I am 63 and wear my hair long. It is curly/wavy. I have completely transitioned to silver and grey hair and love the color. I do wear a lot of ponytails when at home. I have a hair appointment in April and now I am considering some face framing layers and letting them hang out when I put up my ponytail. Thank you

Carolyn Niemann: I really enjoyed your video. I've always cringed when I would hear that the older you get, the shorter your hair should be. I've always had long hair since I was a kid. I'm 52 now, and my maintained long hair makes me feel youthful and have always gotten complimented on my hair. May I also add that people can be overly opinionated on how THEY think someone's channel showed look and\or sound like. There was nothing distracting about your vid. The music was fine and not loud. The information given was helpful and I enjoyed your sense of humor. Since they seem to know better than the rest of us...let them move on (buh-bye ) or create their own channel! You keep doing you! Thank you! ✂

Yvonne Erhard: Love!!! Love the tips!!! My hair is super important being I lost most of it from oral chemo therapy , ever since then the texture is hard to grow it long and have it look good. After many years of growing it and trying to love it long ...lead me to cut it all off ,,, now I want to grow it back again...lol... What would be the best haircut/ shape to grow it back in? I am going to be 50 in a few months and want to look great!! Thank you!!! Great video ♥️♥️♥️

Charlotte Stockham: Your information and expertise is greatly appreciated. As far as people voicing complaints over your skilled, time-tested (25 years!) and professional experience, if they’re here simply to criticize, they have the option to find another channel. The last thing I would do is to be concerned about that. Thank you for your time, effort to help us, and the fantastic tips.

Patricia Boschock: Hi. Your suggestions are great. I am 61. Letting my hair grow a bit longer, but keeping layers. My hair is not gray enough for salt and pepper yet. I am dark haired, and my stylist throws in lighter highlights. It brightens up my face, and I get nice feedback.

Cerri Berry: Hellow hellow Justin ✋another good Vidio, working hard as usual! I think it's easy to get fed up with your hair when it's long and have a sudden impulse for change. I usually tie my hair up when I feel like that....again it's the fine thin hair thing I have problems with. Adding some extensions can be fun if you have the time. Ultimately don't you think it's down to keeping your hair well conditioned and looking after it that makes the difference with long hair ? Anyway it's fun to catch up..hope things are all good - wishing you the best cheerio for now

A P: Thanks for this video You’re awesome. I like to have my hair high lighted with different shades of blond and I always use a purple shampoo to avoid brassiness. I like the pulled back look with the softness around the face. I feel fresh and youthful with that style. Good posture and a nice smile speak volumes about how you feel about yourself. Thanks again for your video. Keep them coming !!!

Nancy Guzman: Thank you for a great vid. I will try out not layering my hair this time. I'm 51 and love my gray but could certainly use more tips on care and examples on how to make the best out of it.

Carolyn Stockton: Justin, I am trying to grow out my salt and pepper hair, and I love your idea about putting in some darker hair against the silver to make it pop. I don’t live that far from Portland, so I’m hoping to come and see you in the next few months. Your advice is always appreciated.

christine hofilena: Coloring my hair after years of working black hair really makes me look younger and youthful Thank you!! You did amazing job with your hair advice

Light & Glory: Thank you Justin for such informative video. I have long naturally wavy/curly fine hair. I leave my hair air dry without much styling. Do you recommend bangs with wavy hair? And if you do, would it look odd if the bangs are straightened when the rest of the hair is wavy? I find it very difficult to part my hair without bangs.

Donna Muller: I have 4th generation super curly hair, that was always frizzy before all the new products came out. I slept on painful, large rollers every night of high school, set with rolling papers and Dippity Doo - remember that stuff? I'm 62 now, and my favorite haircut of all time was when I went bald from chemotherapy about 8 yrs ago. I had a good head for it. I played up the makeup and earrings and went out confidently. I was actually sad when my hair began to grow back. I don't recommend this route to baldness as I almost died, but shaving my head is no longer a scary idea. (It looks like the silver/curly model in the video now.)

Celeste -: Going platinum/ very light blond, was the best thing I ever did with my hair. I have all white roots so that there’s never any jarring contrast between my roots and hair color. By the way, music seemed fine, nice background, not too loud, I thought it was just right. While I did see 3 or 4 older women in the photos you presented, many more older women photos, demonstrating what you were talking about, would have been nice.

Alexandra Ito: Thank you for sharing these ideas! I appreciate hearing you discuss each of these hair mistakes.

alicia chigbrow: I recently added some curtain bangs because I have to wear my hair back for work, a modern day bridgette bardot look, it has added so much style to my look and I love them! I also want to add some highlights to soften my dark hair and add some dimension. As I get older the long dark hair isn’t as flattering as it used to be.

Cinder Elli: Loved your video Justin, seemed like you were talking about my hair, bangs, frizz and layers. I now subscribed to your channel so I hope to learn more from you, thank you so much for sharing !

luckysuz R: I’m actually considering not coloring my hair anymore. Any tips for making it look good during the grow-out phase? I have longer hair several inches past my shoulders and would prefer to not cut it shorter.

Icedtea4me: I love updos. I have clips, ponytail holders, bobby-pins and more. I’d like to see a video on fast easy updos and what tools you use to get hair to stay up and on place all day. Thank you!!

lagunagirlbythesea: I completely agree with you...you need to style your hair and you need to do it on a regular basis. Many women that have long hair, they wind up putting their hair in a ponytail and it just looks sloppy and lazy. I think a slide part looks super youthful ❤️

clarissa lion: You're so informative, stylish, sincere and intelligent! I haven't been so glad to stumble across a tube in a long time. Much love! Can't wait for what's next, and love that you talk about color and you love to move around the studio

Penny Gonzalez: Love the idea of adding A LITTLE bit of darker strands to compliment my salt/pepper, which is turning more salt on the top. However, one of the things I do not miss about color in my hair is the fading and brassiness that comes after a month or so. Then I would be dealing with trying to tone those pieces? Also would be afraid the stylist would go overboard. Any suggestions?!!!

Hilda Medrano: I don’t have gray hair even though I am soon to be 43 and I was so agains changing something that “was no broken” BUT you are right that a change either in style or color can be HUGE!! I wen from layered brown straight hair to layered hair with big waves and an auburn color that suits me and makes me look younger so I for one agree with your tips - thanks for sharing your knowledge!!!!! (Especially about deep conditioners)

pleroma02: I'm 75. 15 years ago I looked at my roots and discovered my dad's SILVER. So I let the color grow off. Then when my hubby went to heaven, I wanted pictures to put on FB and other online places, but I didn't like them. So I looked at all my young pictures and found the ones I liked - all long hair. So I started oiling my scalp and hair to increase growth (worked!), and I now have long, silver hair that my hair dresser says women pay a lot of money to match the color. If my hair is long, I can put it up and make it look short and elegant. But if it's short, I can't make it look naturally long.

delmarie crandall: Recently have taken one side bit of my long hair, twisted it upwards and pinned it in place. It lifted my whole 66 year old face. Would like to get more instruction on styling this way.

Jackie Laurin: Great information for women of a certain age. Really enjoy his series . Thank you Justin

Betty Miller: Very interesting video... I wish you could show pictures of how to layer long hair. I’ve always been afraid to do it but I agree it would add a lot.

Luann Kelly: I'm almost 59. I love my waist length hair. I seldom ever use heat on it. I braid it daily, and use a great quality shampoo and conditioner. I touchup my roots every month. To smooth it, I spray a little argan oil on the ends. Super long hair takes extra care that I think most women don't want to do. It's a commitment. If you can't commit to the work it takes to maintain, its better to wear a shorter style. I just wish long hair wasn't so controversial for over 40's, 50's, 60's women.

AlexandraLynch1: It's impressive that you don't want to cut my hair. I trim my split ends at home because I don't trust most stylists if I walk in with hair down to my low hip. But braids are easy, and I look forward to being seventy and rocking the long grey braids or the silver coronet.

Kim H: Just found you. (recently retired Cosmetologist) Your videos are wonderful. Don't change a thing and don't dumb it down. I'll be binge watching, thank you.

J Crowther: I’m 68 . My hair has always been chôme coloured dark brown . Last year I decided to have a balayage and then gradually became blonder with contrasting darker roots . It’s long , it’s straightened with bangs and I love it. You are absolutely right . It was if you were talking about me lol

Lady Hecate: Just stumbled on your channel and I was intrigued. You kindly provide a lot of information. This was a good video because I have long hair and I am not young but look young. I am very gentle with my hair in washing and combing. I wear my hair up when I go to bed to prevent tangles. So I just love your channel as I think listening to you will help me take good care of my hair. I have subscribed to your channel and look forward to learning more.

Ava k: I have long hair that has thinned some with age.I add a few hair extensions ....what a big difference that makes. I feel like I’m in my 30’s again!! Love your videos
