Listen, there is definitely more than one way that you can carry out your hair routine, but you definitely don't need to be doing all of the things that you've seen on the internet, especially now I don't blame you. I too went down the very Rocky Road of discovering My Curls and understanding my hair routine, and it took most of my youth, all throughout my teens and into hair school, to understand how to really be styling. And now I want to save you the time. The headache and even the money, because I have seen some interesting routines on my fyp and IG, and it leaves me wondering bestie. Why are you doing this to your hair? How you should style? Your hair depends on your hair's texture, the porosity and the result that you're looking for so instead of wasting time product and weighing your hair down throughout this very beginner friendly video, I'm going to quickly walk you through steps in your routine that you should definitely just Be skipping I'll be doing my own hair along the way to show you what to do versus what not to do, because I am here for you, I'm Mel, your main girl, like licensed hair, stylist and curl Specialists, no matter if you're, wavy, curly or coily. These are the styling steps that don't make sense, let's get to it, alright, so just a quick note, the order of steps and missteps that we're going to talk about are going to be in the order of my hair, routine so beginning with before shampooing. The first thing I see people do is use a deep conditioner or conditioner before shampoo. Now I can see why people are doing this, even though I don't want to see people do this and it's because they want to have their hair nice and conditioned and detangled before shampooing. But if you are doing that, I hope you're using something cheap, because it's all rinsing down the sink or the shower, I'm about to end our endure. If you are newer, I do like to rhyme. Even when I shouldn't anyways, the bottom line is conditioner before shampoo is a waste. If you're gon na do anything just do an oil treatment, you can still use an oil to do a little bit of detangling without wasting money on a product that isn't going to absorb properly into your hair, because it's dirty so, let's wash it and I mean Wash it so watch it if you are using a no poo method or co-washing hair that hasn't been washed for more than three days. Not only is this a waste, but it's a disservice to your hair and scalp co-washing AKA conditioner washing, is using a conditioning product to very gently cleanse your hair, but it's very gentle. Is it it's not really going to cleanse your hair and so right now, if that's something that you're using in between, washes and you're, not washing your hair more than three times a week, then co-wash is not something that you need BRB. While I get shampooing and conditioning all right, I've shampooed - and I ask you: what's the number one thing that you see: people with curly and wavy hair do scrunching. Why? Because scrunching encourages the curl, but you don't need to do too much and you don't need to do it all throughout your routine, although, if you're going to Honey I'd, rather you do it off the scalp. We definitely don't want to be applying conditioner directly on our scalps. That'S a waste of time and money, it's a product to moisturize and hydrate your hair and also protect it. With this coating, that's going to help to fill in any cracks in your strands. These are things that influence your hair's porosity and the more porosity you have the more thorough you want to be with your conditioner and apply it in this action of smoothing. This will actually effectively apply and help tame your frizz way more than just scrunching in your conditioner. Now, if you are having issues detangling your hair, before adding a lot more conditioner, try adding water. This side of my hair was almost effortlessly detangled. You can see that the conditioner almost looks a little foamy and that's because I added water to it. So on this side of my head, it's got the conditioner thoroughly applied, but it's very tangly and I could spend a long time trying to detangle. But I'm going to add some water and that helps to loosen things up to help me detangle almost instantly now another thing: I've applied a deep conditioner to my hair, but it wouldn't make sense to use a deep conditioner if you don't have anything really to treat The curly hair community will tell you loud and proud that you should always be deep conditioning, but just know that is not the case if your hair is healthy. Otherwise, if you're using these, you could just be weighing your hair down now, if your hair isn't healthy. For example, if your curl pattern has been impacted by color bleach, keratin heat in that case, is it bouncing back like these? Some people recommend curl training, and that is twisting your hair. While it is deep conditioning so that it is in kind of a curled State, while it is getting a treatment, this isn't going to revitalize your curl pattern. Unfortunately, this is not how the bonds of our hair operate. So if you are someone, that's spending time with their conditioner in their hair, twisting every single strand only to rinse it out afterwards and then go in and style, then this is a huge waste of your time. That'S not necessary because it's not effective! Now I'm going to get rinsing, because if your lean leaving your deep conditioner in longer than half an hour or as directed on the bottle, then this is also wasting your time when you could get straight into styling. This will always be one of my favorite deep conditioners period. I didn't show you properly, but obviously even NYC, and you know what I've always. I'Ve always thought. This is a dupe for the Redken mask, which Redken is not cruelty free. This is an affordable dupe and is cruelty free, it literally can't be beat now. The first thing you're doing when you come out of the shower, is put a towel on your head. Think again, what I recommend is bringing a claw clip into the shower with you. So after you finish rinsing out your conditioner, you can clip your hair away. Now, it's off of your body not dripping. Now this isn't the biggest deal, because, yes, you could just go back in and re-wet your hair, but it is a step that you can skip, because when the hair is fully wet and fresh, it's gon na better absorb our styling products and that's also going to Help result in less frizz now. This is the part that I don't think people understand and it's ruining their strengths. When we're styling, it's really important to use products that are made for your hair's texture, for example. Many people will assume that, just because their hair is Curly, it must be coarse. You know coarse hair is super unruly and it needs thick Butters or they might think that their hair is really dry, so it needs some really heavy conditioners or even that their hair is really fine and they can't use products like oils. There is always a product for you specifically. This is brand new. I partnered with the evmyc to share their new 10 in one main magic primer for fine hair. It has a near identical formula to the regular primer which I have been using for years now, but they relaunched it for fine hair, and this Honestly made my heart sing because it has the exact same 10 benefits as the regular primer to quickly List It strengthens. It'S a Heat Protector. It'S got 24 hour frizz and static protection. It cuts drying time it detangles it's non-greasy. Well, actually, that's what differentiates these my fine hair curly is. You can still get the benefits of argan oil and sunflower oil that are in these products. That also help with UV protection, softens moisturizes and reduces breakage, but in a non-greasy formula. So that's the one that I'm using today. My strands are fine to me medium and I can apply this generously over my hair, and I know that this is going to Prime me for the rest of my styling and it gives my hair a lot of slip. So when I go in and style it, which I often use tools like brushes, it's going to help make all of that a lot easier. Now this just launched if you've liked the old main magic primer, but you found it to be a little bit heavy. You had to use it very sparingly. This is going to be great for your fine hair I'll have details for it in the description box below. So you can go check. It out feel free to use this if you're a wavy, curly or coily and if you're, wearing it curly or straightening. And I want to thank my long-term Partners at either NYC for coming out with something for fine hair curlies and in general hopping on the wave of coming out with products for your hair's texture. Not your curl pattern. It'S super important to understand what your hair's, texture and porosity is before applying your product, the lower porosity, your hair is the more humectants you want in your products and the higher porosity. Your hair is the more emollients you want in your product and the more longevity you want out of your style, the more gel you need to use a quick question: do you apply product to your hair? I'M asking you this because what I've learned with dealing with so many different people is that most of us not me most of you, don't know how to properly apply product, and it's not your fault. Here'S the thing, though, if you are going to use a gel or a foam in your routine, you want to use first, your cream put it this way. There'S three phases of styling: your curly hair, your prep products, your styling products and your Finishing Products. Products from each of these categories are applied in that order. Prep style finish. We prep by conditioning our hair that could be by applying a leave-in conditioner or a primer. Like we just did and step two is to style when we style we're shaping the curls for how we want them to look at the end result. Now, if you are using gel before you're, using cream you're not going to get the same, hold and Longevity. So, in a nutshell, it's gel after cream or cream before gel, although you can skip cream, just as I am doing, if you've already conditioned your hair and applied your primer, your prep product - and, I repeat, you do not need to do any scrunching if you're just Going to go in after and start brushing, save the scrunching to the end now, while you're styling, if you feel like your hair, is not absorbing the product. Well, it still feels dry as you're styling before reaching for more products always grab your water. You might be applying way too much product which is just going to weigh your hair down, and you could have just added some water now. This might look like a silent step that doesn't make sense. Why are you brushing the hair to Define it but trust the process? Now, I'm just about finished styling. I can take my towel and do a little bit of towel drying, which is something you want to be very gentle with. What doesn't make sense is to not dry your hair, especially if you are just going to be out in humidity, trying to dry your wet hair in a really humid environment is not gon na dry. It'S going to take a very very long time. Your hair won't know what to do with all of the moisture available to it. It can actually be damaging to your strands. It'S not good to leave your hair wet for a long time, and so this is going to result in a lot of frizz. All of your styling, all of this time that we put into styling is basically a waste if you're just going to be air drying, especially in humidity now, I'm gon na go diffuse, my hair with heat, because I'm protected from my primer and I'll be back with The finished results and final remarks - I mean the shine is there, but what's not is any kind of residue? This just feels so soft, like curl. This routine took me a total of six products if you're, counting both the diffuser and hair dryer and the DIY oil that I used before washing. These are the basics of a healthy hair care, routine catered to your personal Hair Care needs to save you product and get your hair done more efficiently. I hope you found this very beginner friendly video helpful. If you did, please give it a thumbs up, and I will let you know what other beginner friendly videos you should see in the description box below, but before you get rid of me so quickly. There'S a few questions from my last video that I want to answer in our end of video q. A that we do. I'M actually gon na answer a few, because this is a quick video and while you are down there, make sure you're subscribed to me and turn the Bell notifications on. So you know when we post new videos each and every texture, Thursday. In last week's video, we answered a question regarding red flags during your hair appointment. We got a follow-up question asking: how do you politely get out of an appointment that you're not comfortable moving forward with? If you are in the chair of a stylist that is giving you bad vibes and you do not feel comfortable proceeding and if you're not confrontational, I would kind of pretend that you got like an emergency. This is bad, like knock on all the woods when you leave but pretend that you're getting an emergency phone call and that you have to go especially if they're a nice person that way you don't have to break it to them. That, like listen, I don't think I trust you with my hairdo. Alternatively, you could maybe just ask them to do a wash and style that way: you're not completely canceling your appointment and it's a great way for you to see how comfortable they are at doing curls, especially your hair. If they can style your hair. Hopefully, they'll have a good idea of how to cut it and execute the rest of what you might be looking for or if they're not really giving you the time of day and like the consultation you're, not feeling heard they're a little bit rude. I would be straight up with them back and say you know, unfortunately, I'm not sure you're understanding my hair's needs and what I'm looking for, and I would feel much more comfortable letting another stylist do this, whatever you're. Looking for it's all in how you word it, you don't have to completely put them down, but also put your foot down for you walk out of there. If you have to especially if question number two, they try to use thinning shears on your curls, especially without consulting you or explaining to you why this is going to be a good thing 99.999999 times out of ten thinning. Shears are a bad thing for curly hair because it doesn't cut every strand of hair in this section that you're cutting and it will shatter whatever curls. You are thinning, resulting in a lot of frizz and a lack. In definition. There are other ways that you can texturize curly hair, but we'll have to save all that for another video. I think we do have time for one more question, though Kendall asks cannot washing your hair enough lead to an oil buildup that causes hair loss. It'S an extreme case, but yes, not cleansing your scalp enough leads to poor hygiene and that can become really irritating on your scalp, leading to a buildup that can cause either dermatitis or folliculitis. These are like fungal infections and bacterial infections on the scalp, which, if left untreated, can cause issues in the scalp like hair loss, mostly caused by the amount of itching that is going to happen, which leads to scratching. Oh. This is good, though, but no because if you're aggressive it can lead to scarring so keep the scalp clean washed at a minimum, it's different for everyone, but at a minimum once a week, if you're working out, often like me now, let's do it more frequently. Alright, that's all from me! Thank you so much for watching. There is a big video coming next week and we kind of hinted on what it's going to be in this video. If you can guess what it is comment, what you think in the comment section below and you'll, see me again soon. I love you and I appreciate you peace spray bottle, but it is a skeptic skip that you see skip scary, so quickly lists it strengthens it's a Heat Protector 24 hour flip we're rolling, actually uh. This is day three little behind the scenes. I'M filming the intro outro today because it's sunny so I'm trying to recreate my look good thing. My makeup was my oh. No, I kept the look fresh. Basically, my everyday. This is a Bobby Brown Luxe, defining lipstick in romantic. Do you want a goose okay check? It check it check it. I was gon na, maybe add a serum, but I'm just gon na put on a little bit more of the primer, because it's not a water formula, it's waterless! So it's not going to wet it. It'S just going to help to add a little shine again. This product is supposed to be used on damp hair, but I like to use it to reapply my UV protection. I'M sorry, the sun is this shining. Remember you can get you some in the description box below I'll put the links to this and the other products I use in the routine, because you know what I used when I was deep conditioning and uh. Do you think that the lighting is good? Let'S get blew it, let's get through it. I salute you and your colleague haven't seen

Aaron McDonald: Mell, you should make a curly hair app, where people go in and find their routine and product recommendations according to their hair type, length, etc… along with various styling tutorials and other tips for their specific hair

Nicole Walker: Dang, Mel, I thought I had my routine down...but this video put everything into perspective! I was doing the MOST when I need to be doing the LEAST! I can't wait for wash day now! Thank youuuuu!

Willowy13: I destroyed my hair while going curly girl. If your hair is beautiful with sulfates/silicones, please don't change it. My hair went from 3a/3b, curling from root, bright and medium to thick to a dry mess, 2b/2c/3a, fine/thinned and shedding like crazy in the 7 years I was curly girl. Long story short, I was dianosed with alopecia androgenetic, but didn't accept it. I realized some things about my routine and finally understood it was the curly girl all together. I left it behind 3 years ago and my hair is mostly back to its previous state (except for curling from root).

gwenstacyspidercat: Mell's out here doing public service and giving us back our time!! ⏰

Tala Aa: Also a simple question, some ppl recommend not brushing your hair after you get out of the shower, so they don’t ruin the curl pattern, and i even heard someone says they don’t like to part their hair while applibg product cuz they find they put too much product in there, what do you think about this, Mell?

Molly Lighthart: this video! Every step has been so helpful to me! Also fellow curlies, take the thinning shears tip seriously (I learned from a VERY bad haircut) Thanks Mell and Amanda for the video!

Corinn J: Thank you so much for this video! I have naturally wavy hair and this simplified, well explained process makes me feel less intimidated and actually want to wear my hair in its natural form again. I've been straightening it for about 18 years and it feels like it's time to embrace the wave.

Mandy W.: Mell I just found you on my journey to have healthier hair and embrace my curls and I'm so glad I did!!! I've avoided the curly girl method as it seemed to extreme and felt lost in all the advice videos but since finding you I feel like I have the best guidance out there. Thank you for your content and continuing to help us on our hair journeys!

Violet Rose Quast: I loved this video so much but I just wanted to clarify on the twisting the hair while deep conditioning. I know the reason why people with thick or tight curly hair do this is so their hair doesn’t tangle when letting the deep conditioner sit. Wouldn’t recommend it for lose curls or people who don’t have lots of hair but if you feel like your hairs to much to handle I would recommend braiding twisting or just sectioning the hair with clips to deep condition while letting it sit

Gabrielle Goubran Sprinkle: I love the claw clip in the shower tip!! Styling soaking wet hair is a game changer for me and I hate the drippage as I get ready to style!

James F: Hi Mell, curly guy here with 3a/b shoulder length hair. I’ve been hearing a lot about brush styling being bad for curly hair as it uses tension on your strands. Do you think there is truth to this? Recently instead I’ve been styling with a wide tooth comb as it doesn’t use tension. Love your videos thanks for all the advice!

jesswarsh: I can literally follow every single step the way you do it Mel, and my hair still doesn't turn out the way I want to! I don't know if it's products or technique but wow, I'm in a curl funk

Belinda Chappell: I love your science backed videos Mell. I’ve learnt so much about hair from you, thank you ❤ also you and Sis are super entertaining

Kinda Curly Girl: Mel and Amanda, thank you so much for being my ride or die curly girls. You have helped me master my routine and every single time I have a question I no longer go to google it's Manes by Mell!

Frances Keller: This is so helpful! Thank you Mel! I thought I had my routine down pat. I’m coarse, thick and medium to very high porosity. I struggle with dryness but I think I’m good now. I’ll be implementing the style tips in this vid. The thinning shears thing is so true! I’ve know that for 5 years now and I don’t thin anymore because of the lack of definition it gives me

Bonnie Simon: Always upfront and on point! Again, love when a creator can be honest like you are. Some creators videos just feel like a commercial, even when unsponsored lol. Keep it up Mel ✌️✨

Maureen Levy: Great info Mel. I am now in the midst of a dilemma I cannot figure out. For the life of me I can no longer get a cast on my hair. I have always been able to get a good cast and it just stopped. Same products, same technique, no cast. I've taken your suggestions about letting it be not so soaking wet. I have three key products that I use that always give me a cast and no longer. What on earth has happened?

Math with Bronwen: Great video Mel! I think I'm a pretty experienced curly, and like all of your videos I always learn something new and helpful while also being entertained. You and your sister are wonderful!

Luz Pelayo-Katsanis: Hi Mel, it’s been almost 1yr since I started watching your channel and I can’t thank you enough for all the information I have learned on how to care for my curls!! It’s my first time posting. I ditched my hairdresser in February 2022 after she wouldn’t stop using the thinning shears even after I told her I felt they were affecting my curls. She tried to tell me it was my hormones and I almost believed her. Thank you for posting about this because since I stopped going to that hair dresser and found a curly hair specialist, and I started my curly hair journey thanks to your videos, I’m falling in love with my curls again!! You have been an inspiration and I look forward to continue to watch all your content! Every time I get a compliment on my curls I tell them about your channel. So keep them coming ❤ Thanks so much!!

Jennifer Mann: This was awesome! I have a lot I need to change. Thanks so much for this content! I didn't start trying to style my curly hair until I was in my 60s and I have been incorporating several unnecessary steps. Always learning!

grace: Thanks to you, I finally ditched the co-washing/gentle hair washing, and my hair started to grow! It's been 3 years and it's improved so much! <3 But there's always something more that can be done. I guess that's why they call it a "curly hair journey". :D

Meagan Cavanaugh Belford: Your videos have been so helpful in working with my 12 year old's curly hair!! I am wondering if you have any suggestions for dealing with the nape of the neck rat's nest in between washes!! It is ALWAYS our biggest issue!! She wears a bonnet, we do the prep, style & finish...Just struggling with the mass of tangles!!

Lauren: When I go to a hair appointment, I never know what to ask for in terms of enhancing my natural hair. I have very thick and wavy/curly hair and no one seems to know how to deal with it. In the past I've gone to hair dressers where they looked visibly intimidated and they end up thinning my hair like crazy. A video on what to ask for instead of thinning it out would be great! :)

B Kalie: Mel… you’re amazing!! My hair is looking sooo much better because I’ve been following your tips and techniques.

Charlie Severson: I'm glad you mentioned adding water. I learned that long ago and it's been the key to making corrections every step of the process for me.

Al13n.1n.5p4c3: Hi Mell, is it ok to apply your gel or mousse before brush styling or does it only works if you use a foaming gel? Also love your vid this really helped a lot❤

Paula Windsor: Mell…I appreciate all the information and tips you give curlies! As a permed curly, I do implement a lot of your tips and have found that since doing so, my curls last way longer than they used to! I go 4 months between perms, that is when there is just too much grow out and only the bottom half of my hair will still be wavy…well, actually, now I can still get a good curl at that point! I am sooo happy there is going to be more of a product focus on hair type…I have fine, low density, high porosity hair and really have to be careful what I use because it can weigh my hair down something awful! My favourite additions to my routine because of you are my perfect hair towel and the Ouidad lightweight gel. Fabulous! I also now use a leave in conditioner on my ends and sometimes start my styling with a bit of Ouidad styling cream. Gotta have crunch if I want the style to last though! I started getting perms 35 years ago (yeah…I’m old!) and did that in combination with *shudder* Sun In to be blonde! How do I still have hair?? I took about a 10 year break and have been permed again now for 7 years. Products have come a long way!! Thanks again for the education.

SqRtof Purple: It would be great if you could do a video like this but for natural/transitioning gray. Besides cutting it off, how can we properly treat the good new hair and the old over-treated hair. Really, just anything that applies to natural gray curly hair. Wouldn't ask except you make a lot of sense

Mariana Hincapie: Mell, I deeply admire you! Thank you for doing this videos! After years of keratine treatments two years ago I began taking my hair as curly and you rhcannel ahs been a great inspiration of mine for all this years. Everything was getting better and my curls were looking great until I straightened my hair three times (once a week) during the winter break, using lots of heat protection and I washed it and now most of it does not curl! it seems as if i had done a keratine treatment in the middle to ends part of my hair, decreasing its porosity dramatically and diminishing its curl pattern. I already used a clarifying shampoo on my hair and trying to style it as usual, do you have any idea of what is going on with my hair and how I can fix it? Thanks in advance! I admire you and love your content!

nikiichan: Omg i have asked people to not use the thinning sheers and mentioned that it gives me more frizz and split ends but i have had so many stylists who deny that that i just stopped going to get my hair cut. One of them was actually a teacher at a beauty school. The lesson he gave the student was some people say whatever but they don't know what they want .

Adi Loya: Awesome video! Here's a workout question- when I workout the sweat is dripping... so- how to decide if it's OK to skip the wash? I usually wash up after every workout and that can get to 4-5 times a week

Lynn B: Just want to thank you for helping this 65 yr old curly hair lady. I finally know how to handle my curls to make them look nice because of your videos. I follow this video routine and love it. Now I have to decide if I want to continue to dye roots or go gray. Haha. Always something. Your hair is just stunning. Love your curls Nice job. Thanks

Katie: It’s nice to get hair care reminders from these beginner videos, even if you’ve been following for awhile you may still learn some new tips ❤

Midlife Mulligan: It's been a process, but I think I'm finally getting somewhere with my wavy/curly hair. Thanks in big part to you and your generous library of knowledge. Do you have any advice for grey hair?

Faye Berman: Thank you Mell, for continuing to give us entertaining, educational videos. I love me some Eva NYC, and I don’t think I ever would have known about them if not for you and your seester!

Abby: Thank you Mel I really needed this for years I didn’t know how to properly take care of my waves or curls I’m still working on it but I seem to get really better at it , So thank you ❤

Sally Shires: This video is great! I was spinning and confused about all the stuff that people say they do and how amazing their results are. Thanks for making things simpler. Love your channel

Regina Euzebio: Quick question: I'm looking into trying scalp oils for my dry scalp. For those day, two-threes that my hair is still clean, it looks good but still has an itch. But every time I google what I am looking for, I just end up finding trendy ways to thicken hair. How do you word your searches when doing research to exclude trends and find the specific types of products you need?

Ruth Kuder: Always breaking it down in an understandable format. You are the best Mel!

Vanessa Malik: Hi Mel, Would you recommend using a hair oil at both ends of the routine? (i.e. before cleansing & to smooth hair when finishing)

Christina Grace Beauty: Love your videos!! They are so helpful! I have a question though because I'm having trouble diffusing my hair without it getting frizzy and undefined and I think it might be due to my blow dryer... even on the lowest strength setting and with the diffuser on it still blows pretty hard and it moves my hair quite a bit when I hover. Is that normal or do I need to get a different blowdryer and diffuser?? Thank you!

Cindy O: This video is a gem ❤️ could you please make a video recommending specific products for low porosity hair. I’ve honestly been trying different products for years and I feel like my hair keeps getting worse

Laura Dermer: I love your videos, Mell! I have concerns about the Eva primer, that contains some pretty heavy waxes that are not likely to rinse out of my hair easily. In other words, it is not curly girl approved. I’m not in love with the curly girl method, I shampoo regularly, for example, but I am trying to avoid ingredients like this. I think it would be helpful to point out that this is not a CG friendly product. Even if you don’t do this, I’ll keep watching because you are awesome!

Shayla Baez: I learned a few new things today, thank you Mel

Elizabeth Gonzalez: You have saved my head and hair and feelings! Lol thank you so much for all your help. My hair greatly appreciates your advice

Marissa Lorraine: Omg the tips on the shower routine. I tried adding conditioner in sections and smoothing and that was SO much better than scrunching. I have been guilty of doing condition, cleanse, condition. Cause I don’t know how to manage the tangle sometimes.

Marie: I actually prefer using a mask pre shampoo to after shampoo :) And it definitely has a conditioning and smoothing effect on my curls, so I cannot confirm that it's wasting products. As my hair strands are ultra fine, deep conditioning after using shampoo only weighs down my hair

axusis: Sometimes keeping things simple is the best thing to do to your hair, from the curly hair routine vids I've seen on IG there's so many steps that seem unnecessary. Also, could you review more brands that are available in Europe too, like Sumilayi? The mental pain of wanting to try new products and learn the brand only ships to the US is too real

Melody Kopp: That is a huge help, thank you so much!! I’m just starting to embrace my curls and feel so lost- your videos have been a godsend!

kae thé: I've always been told to never leave in conditioner longer than the directions say because it will damage hair.

Kathy: Hey Mel! I workout 5-6 days a week and wash it once a week (been doing this for years). Lately, I feel like my wash and gos don’t last very long and try to restyle it. My hair knots at the roots and is completely tangled. Would you recommend washing my hair more often to minimize tangles and frizz and allowing the products to work better?

Diana Pompey: Thank you for making this video!! I came to the same conclusion about a lot of these techniques, so it's great to hear that my thoughts were correct! haha!

Néné: Your curl pattern looks looser than when you started but it honestly looks wayyyyy healthier and so gorgeous!

Ara: Hey Mell & Amanda! I’ve been following your YouTube for years & my hair is fabulous! I have a 12 year old, very dense right curls almost coils, who’s hair I’ve always done. She wants to start doing her own hair, any tips? Maybe a video idea for you guys

Kathy ONeil: Thanks for always looking out for us Mell!

Elaine Danalis: Thanks Mel, great info as usual, I’m so glad you addressed the working out part, wasn’t sure on that one

Greyssy Perez-Martinez: Thank you mell for your videos I learn so much each time. A curly specialist said to me that she is not a fan to apply an oil into dirty hair because is not moisturising but instead mix some oil into your conditionner it will be more affective. Personnally, I love to put some oil before washing so I don't overdried my hair espacially in winter time. Canadian winter weather can be rough for our hair. So my question is can we mix some oil into a conditionner? What do you think?

Chiara Ducomble Mezzosoprano: Hi Mel, thank you for all your videos! I have short curls and I struggle with the brush styling... Do you have tips? I am happy with my curls but I dream of more definition.

Viridiana Avila: I had done my hair in a similar routine that you did today. I have some strands that even with extra gel or extra combing they keep drying flat or with no pattern. Which makes that section frizzy. Any recommendations

Caroline Dalton: Hey Mell! I'm brand new at trying to figure out my wavy/curly hair. I'm a bit confused about your advice around 9:20. I have fine hair, should I use a condition/leave in conditioner and then apply curl cream, or skip the conditioner and just use curl cream and then gel (looking to use the Verb line). Thank you!!!!

keeping it Real: Hi Mell, my name is Aliyaa and i live in South Africa. I love watching your videos and i cant explain how much you have helped my curls. Please please please do a video on what you would recommend for the climate i live in, as Durban is so hot and my curls need you. Keep posting as i literally wait for your videos weekly. Keep on studying and sharing with the curly community. You will never know how much you are contributing to us all. ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

WVWiLD1863: Mell, you mentioned that sheering or getting your hair thinned out isn’t recommended if you have curly hair. Can you talk about different hair cuts and styles for curly and wavy hair? I have wavy hair and I have almost always gotten my hair thinned because it is thick. Like THICK! Lol. I’d like for you to go over this topic if you can. Thanks a million! Seriously, your wisdom has helped me tremendously. ❤

Katherine Pendola: Where would something like flaxseed gel (that I make at home) fall in these 6 steps? 11:04 Would it be considered style or prep? Right now I apply it on sopping wet hair in the shower after shampoo and conditioner, then sometimes plop my hair and diffuse or sometimes use my denman brush and diffuse (depending on how much time I have). I live overseas right now where it is difficult to access a lot of these special curly hair products so diy flaxseed gel has been my easiest and best option.. but I want to make sure I’m using it right :)

Tala Aa: Thank you, I LOVE VIDEOS like this And also the one where u recommend product, point is curly hair routine are literally literally literally the best, especially coming from you. Your loyal fan- Asa!

Deanna: Happy Texture Thursday!! Excited for this one!! Much love and happiness!! Xoxo

bugby72: I love your personality!! So fun! Anyway, question... what tips do you have for unruly, course grey/silver hair? It has been my nemesis, and I can not stop the little wirey pieces that pop out everywhere. Not to mention, my waves are not uniform, so I feeling I have a zillion strikes against me. Thanks, Mell!

Elayne K: THANK YOU ! Thank you for the "breakdowns" over the years

Helen L: I am not a beginner and still found this really helpful. Great info. Thanks Mel

Giuliana: Mel, does henna have effect on curl pattern? I'm probably a combination of 3a and 2c and don't want my curls to become more loose. Thanks for the great video

Syl B: Hi Mel, I love your videos and your passion for hair, but your comments on cowash go against what I've experienced. I have a super sensitive scalp and washing my hair more than once a week dries it out and makes it itch, but a co-wash between washes refreshes my hair and keeps my scalp happy. It makes a difference in my hair routine.

Shelda P: I would love to hear your recommendations on texturizing curly hair, my stylist always ask if i want it texurized and my answer is always no because I assume she means thinning shears.

Néné: I pre poo with a deep mask because they all weigh my hair down. So I wash, then deep condition, then I was again with sulfate free light shampoo. It def works for me and I def see a difference, especially with the only protein mask I found that works. But it's an extra step. Not for detangling purposes at all. It just works for me. If I try any mask they make it too soft and plop goes my waves and curls. Also I just water down products that are too heavy. That may make it last less time, but, I'm using my products way faster than 24 months but watering it down, and boom. Much more product that won't weigh it down. It isn't always one reason and result! You do you!!! Love ya!

Samantha Palmer: Just wondering do you have any recommendations in between washes to keep your hair curly? Like how do you keep your hair fresh and curly for the the next few days until you wash it again?

Natalie Dean: Speaking of hairdresser concerns. I have been going to my hairdresser for several years. I have complete trust in her. She is the first hairdresser I've ever gone to who actually knows what's good for my hair and has taken the time to talk to me and guide me on how to take care of MY hair. When my hair grew back curly after I had lost over 3/4 of it to illness, she told me how to take care of it. Once I discovered Manes by Mel, I realized my hairdresser knew what she was talking about, except.... On my last visit, she told me I should not brush my hair when it's wet, that I should only brush it while it's dry. I know better than this. I love my hairdresser, and I don't want to offend her, so I've just made up my mind that what she don't know won't hurt her feelings. I'm just going to continue brushing my hair after I've conditioned it when it's wet. The tangles easily brush out of my hair, anyway, after conditioning, so I don't tend to have much, if any, breakage. She told me on my last visit that while I have a ton of hair, it's fine, so I think I just might try this new product for fine hair. Thanks Mel!!

Marine Goeseels: I’ve been watching your videos for a long time and I’ve tried so many things but I can’t get my curls like they were last year. It’s so frustrating, I don’t know what’s happening. I’ve lost so much hair, it’s even shorter than after my last haircut. I haven’t coloured or bleached it in years, but I can’t hold a curl longer than 3 hours. I’m afraid I’m going to have to cut a huge chunk of it when I’ve spent years and years growing it. Also I have very very fine hair, and not a lot of it, so cutting it would mean I’ll have no hair left. If someone can help me, please tell me what to do

Gio Aprile: Can you PLEASE do a video on how to texturize curly hair. I’m pretty sure getting my hair thinned out has really impacted my curl pattern. I’ve been in the process of growing it back out but I still wanna know how to get texture and dimension without ruining them. TANK UUU ❤️

Catherine P: Hey there!!! I can’t for the life of me get my curls (which have a pattern similar to yours, but medium density, fine hair and low/normal porosity) to NOT clump up like Cindy the youngest sister on the Brady bunch. I use a 7 row denman brush and follow the clean/prep/style/diffuse rules. I don’t finger coil. But no matter how many times I try to separate them, they condense back together and a pony tail looks like I have 10 solid ringlets…not what I’m going for as a 37 year old woman. My frizz is good, and I live in Miami which is saying something, so my only issues are these giant Shirley temple coils.

Marlene Harden: Thank you for all of your hard work ‍♀️ that you do for us I myself have thick hair but it's also shedding Big time ‍♀️ so now I'm trying new brands and new routines..and yes I will be ordering this product...

Michèle Meyer: I love your videos sooooooo much You really made a difference in my hair treatment and styling-routine and I appreciate it so much. And even it's so entertaining to watch your videos.

Zazzy Bandz: Yes! We love easy hair hacks!!

Jennifer Price: Do you have tips for someone who has to wash their hair frequently (almost daily due to work)? I have dense medium to coarse hair and a dry scalp. I normally shampoo twice a week and use a cowash if I need to between that. Is that the best option or is there a better way?

Ronel Sorgenfrei: 15:09 to all of these! Next topic I think will be … oils and which to use for which texture

KathleenKC1: I generally use coconut oil as a pre poo. But, in the past I have used a deep conditioner that I thought was too heavy for my hair.

Body By KV: Hi Mell! Damn your hair so gorgeous I noticed that your curls look lil different lately. Can cutting and dying affect our curl patterns? And how much actually affects? I think my hair changes more nowadays because my hair routines are getting better, I know what kind of hair cuts I want and need… (thanks to you of course ❤) but I wonder is it true that cutting and dying can change curls, I read that online…And also that our hair changes every seven years lol I don’t know if that’s true, because there’s a lot of bs on internet

Dunya Defect: Hey Mel! I love your advice. Just a question if I diffuse my curls they become Realy frizzy and flat, also diffusing takes about an hour. But air drying takes for ever. I kid you not up to 16 hours. But the curls look lovely. Do you have any tips for my hair. I am at A loss at this point. Aloe Vera products are a win but nut oils an coconut oils are to heavy. Cactus water is also fine. My curl pattern is I think 2b/2c but also at a loss there. Can you do a video on different kinds of wavy hair products and what may work for that? I have very thick hair, and also a lot with a big variety in thin and thick strands.

Jeanette Y.: I hope for a video on oils - which oils for which hair and when how to use. Loved this video ❤

Jenn ifer: Thanks for your helpful video . I have two question, I have leave ins and curl creams, if I use a curl cream, do I still need to use a leave in? (I really don't understand the difference) And the other question, on day 3 my crown area starts to be very frizzy, most of the time I start to wear half ups half downs, but I am wondering, why I just have this issue on this small area, any ideas? I have shoulder length (in its curlystate, 50% shrinkage) , low porosity, medium thick hair with a medium density and my curl pattern is somewhere between 3b and 4b, but the most is 3c.

Darla Gresgott: Love your content and love the primer for thin hair! I need some help with a finishing oil, please!

Tina T: Love the throw back clips. I have a stylist that cuts my hair fine, but can't style it at all. She insists on giving me a blow out, which looks nice but also pulls out too much hair. I have been trying to tell her politely for 3 hair cuts now lol. Maybe I will use the phone trick next time

horohorosrin: 1:37 Every time I hear that music, I'm like "SIMPLYNAILOGICAL?!" And then I think how Mell and Cristine would get along so, so well, imo, and also I realized they're both Canadian, so... it's feasible. They could be besties rn, giving hair and nail advice to each other, and I wouldn't even KNOW

Arissa: I usually apply my leave in conditioner in the shower, claw clip it away, and put a shower cap on so it has some time to absorb when i wash my body off

Carol Martin: I maybe get my hair cut once a year these days. Yes, until yesterday I looked like Hagrid! Many reasons. But I know for a fact if I ever see a shearing or feathering scissors, I’m gonna fly! Super happy this time. She got it. I’m a “curly shag” and could be in Def Leopard! Love!

Gina-Marie Ourganjian Cheeseman: What you said about coarse hair is so true. I have thick, coarse Armenian hair. It doesn't need heavy butters but hard-hold gel to keep it from expanding. Armenian hair can get really BIG. Too big. I'm only 5 feet tall.

Yarisme Guilamo: I remember when I transitioned.. I was trying to figure out... my life lol.. I remember a you tuber defused.. on cool while laying on top of her defusing in a downward facing dog position... for over an hour. I literally thought to myself... I'm not about this life... She had the patience of a saint.. I could never

Molly Montgomery: What types of products should I use if I have different types of texture in different places on my hair? Ex. I have very thick coarse strands near my crown and in the back of my head, but towards the front they are much finer.

Billie C: Mel, I need your help! My grays are very course, wirey, and extremely dry, while the rest of my hair is thick (which my hairdresser says it is, but more on a little wavy side) nonetheless, how do I care for such a heinz 57 hair? The grays stick out all over the place, and driving me insane!

JC7 Blessed: Ooh new ManesByMell intro M✂️M. Who designed it? It simple yet elegant 1:07 Amanda really included a clip of someone throwing a $100 bill down the toilet 8:17 "...Most of us (rolls her eyes), not me most of you..." Mell behaves more now, but I know old school Mell is still in there, 12:45 case and point 8:51 Prep, Style, Finish is the method whilst Hheo is the, wait I know this... huh?
