How To Pump Hands Free Using Ponytail Holders

From SantaBarbaraLactation.com: Many mothers need to pump on a regular basis, either because they need to be away from their babies, or because they are trying to increase their milk supply.

Pumping hands-free can make time spent pumping more enjoyable and also more effective. In this video I demonstrate how to use four ponytail holders to hold the breast shields (often called pump flanges) in place. This leaves a mother's hands free to read, look at her phone, and also massage her breasts during pumping which can increase the amount of milk she can express with the pump. Many mothers already have ponytail holders at home, so this is usually a simple, no-cost way to pump hands free.

The steps are:

1. Loop two ponytail holders together in a figure eight. Loop the other two into another figure eight.

2. Loop one ponytail holder eight over the hook of your nursing bra, or around the strap of your bra if you don't have a hook. Repeat for the other breast.

3. Insert the flanges through the other loops of the ponytail holders and hold them against your breasts.

4. Turn on the pump.

5. Gently adjust the breast shields so that your nipples are centered and comfortable in the shields.

6. The combination of the suction and the ponytail holders will hold the flanges in place and you can take your hands off the breast shields.

7. Let the pump work for 5-10 minutes while you read a book, look at your phone or computer, or just relax.

8. For the last 5-10 minutes of your pumping session, massage your breasts with your hands to help remove any remaining milk.

9. When you finish pumping, keep your ponytail holders with your pump so you can use them next time.

Happy pumping!

What I'm going to show you today is how to pump hands-free using for ponytail holders or hair elastics. So all you need is your pump set up and ready to go as well as the ponytail holders? So what I'm going to show you how to do is taking two ponytail holders like this, you just kind of loop, one through the other, until it looks kind of like a figure, eight knot and then pull it tight and I've already done the other one like This okay, so then, what you do is you need to be wearing either a nursing bra or at least a regular bra or something with a fairly thin strap that comes down each side and then, if you're, wearing a nursing bra. What you can do is if it's one that hooks is you just undo your bra from the hook and you hook one of the ponytail holders over the hook. If you have a bra, that's not a nursing bra. You can just on the strap and Ave loop. One of the ponytail holders, through the other around the bra, strap like this, so what you would do is get ready with both of your ponytail holders. Here, like this, okay and now in real life, you would have your shirt pulled up and your nursing bra or your regular bra open, because you're going to put the pumps, the breast shield or flange. This is called against your skin. Of course, I'm just going to demo it over my shirt here, but what you do is you then have this ponytail holder here that you can put the flange through and then put it on your breast and then you can kind of hold it in place with Your arm or something like that and then do the other one. Okay, now you'll kind of have to hold them in place and I'd not really attached to a pump here but hold them in place, and you turn the pump on then what you'll have to do? The suction will start with a pump and you'll have to kind of adjust each one until it's where you want it with your nipple centered in the breast shield, in the flange here comfortable. How you want it and then you'll be able to carefully let go and with the suction. The pump will hold these in place by itself and then you'll be able to go ahead and get a book or your phone and do something while you're pumping, rather than sitting for the whole 15 to 20 minutes with your hands here like this another advantage of Hands-Free pumping is that you can spend about the first 5 or 10 minutes of your pumping session, just letting the pump pump and then for the last 5 or 10 minutes if these are held on by the ponytail holders and the suction of the pump. What you can do is then actually be massaging your breasts. Looking for lumps and massaging out any remaining milk and you'll know you found a spot if you see extra sprays in the flange, but anyway, this is a good way to facilitate you being able to massage your breasts while you pump. So this video is to demonstrate how to use for ponytail holders, hair, elastics or probably even rubber bands, something that you have around the house already to pump hands-free
