How To Add An Elastic Hair Band To The Hole On A Messy Bun Hat

This knitting tutorial by Wise Owl Knits, formerly Cheryl Beckerich Knits, demonstrates how to add an elastic band to the hole in the top of a messy bun hat.

Hi in today's video i'm going to show you how to single crochet a ponytail band onto the top of a messy bun hat. The supplies you will need are the completed hat a ponytail holder, crochet hook and the corresponding yarn. With our completed hat, we're going to attach the ponytail holder using a single crochet stitch, the way we'll start, that is, to go under one stitch and we're going to pull the yarn through and we're going to chain. One stitch then we'll attach our ponytail holder by holding it adjacent to the hat, we're going to go under one stitch yarn over pull it through yarn over and pull through both loops we're going to continue this way yarn over pull through pull through both loops. All the way around the perimeter of the hat - okay - we'll just keep going like that until we get around all the way around, you don't want to do this super tight or super loose, but we just need to securely hold the ponytail band to the hat. I like to finish these hats with 20 to 25 stitches around the top, which gives plenty of room for a big messy bun, the ponytail holder, just kind of draws, the top of the hat together a little bit so that um, if you um, so it just Kind of holds your hair in place a little bit better, almost all the way around now. Okay, we get to the last single crochet stitch, we're going to stick our hook underneath yarn over pull through a loop pull through the last two loops and then we're going to slip stitch to the beginning of the round. So we'll go under and we're going to pull the yarn all the way through i've already cut my yarn here. So just pull it through and now i've got the two ends that i'll need to weave in, but essentially we're done. We'Ve got a messy bun hat with an elastic band at the top to make a stretchy opening to hold your hair in place thanks very much for watching enjoy your hat.

Ruth Ann Klos: Fantastic tutorial, especially if your hair tie breaks .

Chelsea Gradney: Thank you for this video. I couldn't figure how to get the elastic hair band in my hat. I knit, but I can follow your hands in the video. Thanks again.
