And a warning this afternoon for women, especially those who wear hair ties or around your wrist, something most of us do all the time it's rare, but it can cause an infection. The now Tampa, Bay's Christie Post has one woman's frightening story and how you can prevent it from happening to you. You see it all the time. Women wearing hair ties on their wrists, but audree Kopp is now warning. The convenient move can be dangerous. I didn't believe it at first. I thought that it was a spider bite or something else not from wearing hair ties. She told WLKY in Louisville that nearly two weeks ago she noticed a growing bump on her wrist after wearing a glittery hair ties kept getting bigger and redder and worse. She went to the doctor to get antibiotics, but the bump continued to grow. So she went to the emergency room. They said that I needed surgery and thank God that I caught it in time or I could have had sepsis doctors believe bacteria in the hair tie likely got under her skin through her pores and hair follicles, causing the infection. That'S a pretty unsightly looking wound. Toxicologists Alfred Allegra's has seen similar blisters and rashes from fitness trackers, and he says it's easy to prevent. You notice that you're starting to get an abrasion I would remove. It obviously have to keep it clean, Kopp valves to keep her hair ties clean in the future and to never wear it. On her wrists again, a lesson learned that could have been a lot worse. It could have been a whole different ballgame once it gets into your bloodstream. You know people are known to go into a coma for the now. I'M Christie Post

Ang A: I love how so many people here are trying to diagnose the situation. Calling her dirty & serving up random hypotheses... This can happen to anyone for a number of reasons... Clean or dirty. Doesn't take a "dirty" person to get a staph infection. Staph bacteria is literally all around us all the time... On every surface. All it takes is a teeny tiny abrasion to let the bacteria in. Her main issue was keeping the ties on her wrist just long enough to let the bacteria set in deep. She wasn't paying attention early enough to catch it before it set in. Nothing wrong with her other than not paying attention to her own body. Something most of us are guilty of doing all the time.

Amy Rivers: I have two on my wrists all the time unless they are in my hair. I didn't think anything like this could happen.

ExaltedDuck: People often dismiss lumps like that as spider bites. But they're rarely ever from spider venom. The types of venom that would cause large welts would cause a lot of other symptoms, too, related to the neurotoxic or cytotoxic effects of the venom. When it's just a lump, that's almost always just a staph infection. It can start as an insect or spider bite but it can occur anywhere that the skin is broken. I had one on the back of my hand a few years ago from donning and doffing nitrile lab gloves (my guess it is that it started as a pulled or ingrown hair). If they can be drained, that speeds up healing. They don't necessarily have to be drained, though, depending on what kind of abscess and cyst forms. Antibiotics kill the bacteria and if it hasn't forms a resilient sac, the body will just absorb it.

dreemsnake1: My husband’s Fitbit irritated his wrists and turned them bright red. He cleaned it, and his wrist, every night. He would wear it for a week on one side, then a week on the other, giving the wrists time to clear up in between. The company basically said “too bad” but they had an entire web page dedicated to people with this issue so my husband wasn’t alone. And they quickly changed their wristbands so that they would no longer cause irritation. My husband’s Fitbit sure cost a lot but the wristband could not be replaced. Thank goodness it finally broke.

Shirley Hansford: My mom had a small bump, pimple on her forearm. She ignored it long enough that she got septic and died from staphylococcus infection

SweetLadyJ: OMG, I have never read a bigger batch of nasty comments. The Dr. pretty clearly states how she got it. So a whole bunch of the comments are speculation about how? She got an abrasion that opened a way into the body. Hair bands are elastic. As in they exband and contract. When they contract they probably trap and harbor all kinds of crap. This one had glitter, probably scratched her. Bacteria lives on the skin. That's all it takes. How about not bashing her, and be nice. Think about ways you could avoid it from happening to yourself! How many of you have ever taken a sniff of your watch bands? Pretty gross. I use alcoholic on mine about once a week. And soap and water when I wash my hands. Do what your mom taught you. If you can't say anything nice, keep your damn mouth shut!

Kimberly Johnson: I’m sorry for the lady, but I’ve always worn hair ties on my wrist for years! This has never happened to me- Merry Christmas to all

KatKnits: thanks to the news center for actually covering this, now I can show my husband why I always wash my hair ties and scrunchies . He always figured I was crazy for doing it

N W: My hair tie made my whole hand swell up when I left it on over night by mistake.

•Flxwerpuff• #roadto100: This is why I don’t use hair ties I tie my hair without a hair tie

Adri Wants Death: That happens to me before

Ceylaan Blue: BULL. Everyone has MRSA/Staff on their bodies and can get into your skin. The hair tie is the scapegoat in this story.

Mary Maxine: I wonder if the glitter increased the abrasiveness of the tie... I always new glitter was evil.

rayner mooney: Well, I guess it's a good thing I don't own any hair ties.

IB2EZ2C: There was an article about hair ties from China a few years back. As I recall, teenager absentmindedly chews on hair tie and finds it 'chewy'. Curiosity (or the thing breaking) led to the thing being taken apart, and instead of a rubber band or other elastic found condoms! The whole package was that way......

khrwjt: Another reason I can use to never wear a watch on my wrist. Since 1978 I been cutting the bands off and keeping my watch in my pocket. And more often I don't have the watch. I just use my Spock clock in my brain. Close enough.

Mandy IsMyName: I keep telling my daughter not to wear them on her wrist. they are called "hair ties" for a reason! I will show her this video and hope it teaches her a lesson

DenverDazzle: Crazy they don't even mention how to clean them. I'm sure soap and water will do just fine. With the Corona virus, part of my decontamination routine when I go to the store, is to spray them with rubbing alcohol.

신인지: I have my hair tie in my wrist for years but I didn't have that..

David Bo: I don't think it was the bracelet itself, or the color, or the glitter. The bracelet rubbed the skin and all of our bodies carry staph bacteria and for some reason, thru little pores in your skin the staph starts to get infected. Then in 24-36 hours, you have full blown angry site that hurts like hell. Go straight to an emergency room and get it clean out. Then you might have to be hospitalized several days. This happen to me last week and ended up the in hospital for 6 days and went thru 54 IV bags of antibiotics pushed thru my veins and 2 surgeries later I got to go home. The test results showed I had MRSA.

Heather Baxter: I just want to know why she wasn’t wearing gloves when she changed the dressing? Another great way to get more infection

Juicy Fruit: Ah geez! Now another safety warning going on another product. Why can’t people just use a product for what it is intended for!!

Football Mom: Never put hair-tyes on ur wrist.

Brenda Lucier: my daughter wear her tie all the time I tell her not to but she doesn't listen

Alexlovesgardening: im a boy wearing too much bracelets so i am still gonna take the risk

DaWhiteWolffie: Isn't this just common sense? Don't irritate your skin or you'll get an infection? Duh?

Jeff Vandagriff: I have long hair and wear hair bands , you have to wash them like washing your clothes (or buy new ones) they will get nasty especially if sweat alot. I have a few dozen bands I wash in hot soapy water, let dry , spread them out on paper sack and scotch guard them. I wear a set for a few days , trade them in for a nice clean set. They'll last me a month and I wash em again. Better than buying new ones!

Cheryl Rushing: Its the glittery hair ties causing this not scrunchies or regular band hair ties.

Barbara Lane: I bet a piece of the glitter worked it's way into the skin and caused the abscess.

elizabeth clarke: Looks like a staph infection. Cellulitis looks like that . So does MRSA

TheLittlestUnicorn: Well if you thought it was a spider bite why didnt you go to the doctor sooner

samantha Slade: I always sanitize mine either wash them with soap and water and let them dry. Or u could spray them with a disinfectant.

Sevenblessed: I'm here because I feel asleep with my rubber band on and woke up with my hand swollen, like bee sting swollen.

No Joke: I am a guy, haven't girls been doing this for decades

Samantha Shull: I think its more than just the hair tie

Beth Hansen: the girl goes to a tanning bed. I wonder if it had more to do with that as the chemicals with the hair tire then anything else.

Parmajomm: Someone needs to wash their hair

Kim Huffstetler: I don’t think it was the hair tie either

aj maganda: I wonder what else can go on your wrist?

Dreeka Minner: Just keep them clean pretty much

She’s The Dekota: I bought these regular black small hair ties n I get rashes

Scott Bever: Possible brown reculse or black widow spider bite to do that damage!

Wileen Byroads: watch out!

claudia fahey: Maybe the hairtie was too tight? I mean bracelets dont cause this...or do they?

1kuhl1: I think it was due to chemicals band was made with

Kenna is Very weird 2: Where else do we put our hair ties?!?!

Noodle: I think she's just allergic to the glitter.

cyberspaceout: How i cant keep a hair tie for more then a week with out it braking or i losing it

marianne froholdt: IT is not dangeros, then we all will have this.

Carly Pete: This makes the NEWS lmfao...

Not frog mushroom: I have a little one

Skittles Sydney: My scrunches would never

Feng: probably doesnt even wash her hair

Thanh Thảo: I use scrunchies yay

Raven: Well i use invisibobbles

K.A.V: I clicked on this randomly and then looked down on my Risk..

UwU: How about scrunchies

Lisa Smith: Wash your hair
