I really think you're gon na, like what we're talking about today. Styling tips episode 2. This is a good morning. Yep today is all about flat irons. Yes, they are so popular right now, if you use them for straightening use them for curl for wave. All of the things and I'll tell you what I'm gon na walk you through, that whole process we're gon na walk through how to use them we're gon na walk through which ones I use. We don't want to do how to style and prep your hair prior to using them. We'Re gon na talk about it all and wait so go ahead and get my model to give you guys a little secret that I wanted to share if it worked and it I think it did work. So what we did is we actually before we got here? We'Re already dry, as you can see, Jana actually put in some of this technique: art transformer there's a mousse and a gel. This is de gel or the lotion. Then she put that in her hair when her hair was damp, she pulled it up into a ponytail. As you can see right now, and then in that, after that point, I tell it would be as if you went to go sleep on this a night. So this is something that you would do the night before I took her over and we actually put her under a dryer that would simulate air drying. I got it mostly dry under that dryer. Then we came back to the chair. Had her tilt her head upside down and finished just trying the roots really quickly, because they were so a tiny bit damper than I wanted them to, and this is where we were left, as you can see in the split screen right now between when her hair Was dried before in the previous video? She does have more volume right now than she did when she did it the other way. So this is a great little trick that I think you might be able to use for yourself at home. So the first thing that I want to hit on is the tool: what flutterin are we using and why so there's a lot of different patterns on the market, as I'm sure you know, infra scription pillow so make sure you check it out down there, but in For shine is one of my favorite irons period. I'Ve used them for gosh, probably about 20 years now, and I've been really really happy with them for a few reasons. So some of the key things that you want to be paying attention to when you're looking for an iron is you want to make sure that it is not ceramic coated but an actual ceramic plate? What that's gon na do is it's gon na mean that the heat is distributed more evenly from the entirety of the entire plate. It'S one of those little things that adds up to make a huge impact in how well or how efficiently these either add, wave or smooth her out, and you want to make sure that the heating mechanism goes to foreigner degrees. I usually keep mine at 400. Now this one's variable, I can change this up and down turn it down to, I don't know, maybe 280 degrees. What I find is actually, if it's lower heat, if I turn this down, it just means I have to go over that same section, multiple more times to get the same result once you get above 400 degrees. It starts to get a little bit more damaging and I don't see a lot of benefit versus the amount of damage that I get. First things: first, we're gon na walk down and through how to just smoother hair out and how to do it straight. So we're gon na do a couple sections right here, just going straight with it, so you guys can see it. So I'm gon na hand this to you and it is hot. So keep that in mind. So the first thing you're gon na do is you're going to section off two sections, so you might want to use this brush. It'S gon na make it easier or a brush is gon na make it easier so comb the front section the way you're gon na comb, you can start in the back. You can start in the front. Whatever is easy for you. I don't really think that there's a right or wrong way to do this. So, first of all, when you start, when you put it in you're, gon na make sure that you start moving it and you're moving it at the same pace all the way through the ends. What it tends to happen is people want to, and I'm gon na do this rather than have her do this, because I don't want to have more heat on her hair than we have to have. But people have a tendency to put it in. They start to go down the shaft down the shaft through the ends and then when they get to the ends, they go really fast. Okay and what ends up happening is it ends up leaving your ends, look not necessarily damaged, but not as smooth out as everything else, and that's part of what makes a flat ironed look so polished is those ends being smooth, so spending a little even extra time. Once on those ends, you're gon na smooth those out it's gon na last time, you have to do it so are just gon na grab me a section here and then we'll have you do that section, so you're gon na put this in now put it in Here and now on this time, we're gon na, let's go you're going to go down, but I want you to notice the body mechanics here: okay, so yeah, I'm keeping your I'm keeping your hand from twisting it more. So here's what happens! People put ours in their hair and with their natural inclination. What they want to do is they want to twist their wrist or twist the iron as it goes down. If you put a section special in the front, grab it with your hands and move this iron down body, mechanics, I'm gon na hand this to you biomechanics alone, right, if you watch, if I lock my into place and I locked my wrist biomechanics is going to Give me a c-shape regardless, I don't have to bend my wrist so just doing this, I'm going to get a bend out of it. If I start to twist my wrist you're gon na get straighter and at the very ends, there's gon na be a little crook to it right. So if you want true Bend just lock your elbow off, lock your wrist off and hold out and you'll see that it naturally even on this side. It naturally gives your hair a certain amount of Bend because it's actually gon na Bend does that make sense. These so I'm gon na do one more section, and I want you just to kind of think about that. Hold that wrist straight and move yeah hold the wrist straight, don't bend the wrist and then pull it down and just and then okay, so think about drawing a C. When you do that. You'Re just trying to see just like that see that movement right there. Okay and that can come down close it that can come down like this. This perfect, her wrist, isn't moving right, but inertia and her elbow isn't moving, but she's still getting a lot of C in that, and that C is what's creating Ben now you couple that with starting a little ways away from the root, so you're not right on The scalp and burning yourself slowly all the way through the ends and you're gon na find that you get smooth ends and you get a little bit of Bend, might surprise some people that you can actually use this size of an iron and actually get a nice Wave when the hair is this length or longer too much shorter than this gets a little harder. I would recommend the standard iron to cap point, but when you have longer hair - and you know, it's got a pretty fair amount of it. Something like this is a quick way to add wave it's kind of nice because it does a little faster, but it also gives a really nice wave. So here's how we're going to start you're gon na comb, this section off now, we've already smooth this out. So we're not gon na do the first part of this, but typically what I would say is you grab a section and the first thing you do: is you go over the ends real quickly? Just one quick pass to start smoothing those ends out, because when we move into adding curl we're not gon na be spending as much time on the ends within that amount, because we don't want them to corkscrew. We want them to Li lay nicely. So if you take a second to smooth those ends out now, they're gon na look a lot more polished when you're done with the wave. Now next thing is well. Have them start we'll have our start here, so you can see it so I'm gon na have you take this and what gon na do is you're gon na start, you're gon na put that in your hair about an inch and a half two inches from the Scalp, okay and you're gon na clamp it and then you're gon na twist it back so you're gon na twist. It back like that and then you're gon na pull it straight out. Okay. Now, when you pull it straight out, here's the key the speed at which you pull your iron out is going to dictate how much wave or curl you get the speed and the thickness of the section, the thicker, the section or the bigger the chunk of hair You'Re dealing with the less curl you're gon na get this the faster. You move the iron, the less curl you're gon na get so start with a section like this put the iron in twist. It back and then move it and I've kind of in a little pace and see how much wave you did. If you get enough good, then you know that's about the size section. You need that's about the speed you need to go. If you don't get enough, then take a smaller section or go a little slower with the iron grab, that section twist it back and then and then pull it out perfect and then see how she gets a nice wave out of that. So now we'll take another section behind this. Okay, now, as you can see, this is a much larger section, so we're gon na take this in two sections and you're gon na. Do that one as well the same way watch your ear and then pull it out. Whatever is easy for you, if it's easier for you to tilt your head off to this side, that might be easier to use to use gravity so try that back, perfect yeah. Now you didn't know what you do wrong there. You didn't twist it back enough and you went fast almost over standing and then you know any of you so yeah totally, absolutely so put it in here. You can also twist it back like you, so put it on your fingers versus grabbing it. In your hand, does that make sense, yeah so just kind of think like yeah, take a section, clamp it and then twist it back with your fingers and then pull it out. There clamp it there you go twist. It now you're still going really fast with it. Okay, so - and this is perfect this - this shows you the kind of step-by-step. So may I have you do this one again, so try doing okay I'll take this now. Try tilting your head off to the side, so you get easier to work with grab that put that yeah there. You go I'll, clamp it down now crystal way back there you go now, pull it out there you go see how much more way to get exactly use your fingers, because your fingers can twist a lot easier. Your fingers give you a lot more control over it when you're trying to go through this right got a big section come through it once just to smooth the ends out. Right put this in twist it to I'm using my fingers all right and then pull it out and when you pull it through the ends just go slow and the slower. You go the more way you're gon na get and then, if you don't feel like, I feel like you know what that's not quite enough wave, it's reasonably forgiving, you can go into the LA area, they didn't get enough wave and you can get more wave out Of that section, and now we're back we've added the wave to her hair we've used the flat iron, so I'm gon na. Have you put this back in your hand, real, quick, but don't grab a section. You can pretend we're just gon na lift this up now if she were to grab a section. That means that she would close the section in the iron twist back this way on this side of her head and then on this side. She would twist back the opposite way that helps it open back up off of the face. Now, that's kind of a personal thing. Some people, like them both coming into the face some people like him, coming back one side and on the other I just personally preferred coming back off the face. So that's the way I would teach my clients. So in finishing one thing that I like to do using the scenario is just add a little bit more shine to the overall look and a little bit more dimension. The great thing about wave is that it comes with a certain amount of dimension anyway, so we're going to use the same product. This is the Luminess over here. This is the meta coil and we're gon na. Have you apply this in your hands now you're gon na put a couple of pumps in the palm okay. This particularly, is a little bit more on the wetter side. If you would say right, it's a little more oily, which means it's gon na give your hair a lot of shine. But again, it also can weigh a hair down if you use it improperly or use too much of it, so which one to be at least cognizant of that you're going to bend exactly give me a little claw there and you're gon na work. Your hands through the ends just to break it up or you can scrunch it into your wave if that works better for you as well, so try that try just kind of scrunching it through right, yep, starting at the ends, and then you work your way up Through the mid-shaft into the scalp, now I wouldn't put a lot up in the roots because you don't need it in the roots, but really you want to kind of focus it here now now that she's got less than her hands, because most of it is applied To her hair now they're just a little bit, you can rub them through your hands again and then work just kind of go through the front there you go and just make sure. If there's any pieces like you'd want to grab a big piece exactly like that and kind of separate some pieces, that'd be the perfect way to do it exactly so. It gives you a little bit of separation a little bit of shine and it doesn't make your hair greasy and lay flat alrighty. That'S what I got for hair tips when it comes to using a flat iron. I hope that helped hope. Megan H: I am loving this series so much! ⭐️ I’m learning new techniques and about products with every video. I was grateful for your wife being the guinea pig yet again! Even better was how the curl didn’t turn out 3rd one in...and how to fix it. I’m such a novice with hair but look forward to trying this technique.

Celtic Halo: Thank you so very much for sharing your flat iron tutorial! It’s the BEST one that I have ever seen! Very informative and easy to follow. No need for me to look any further! I love how you demonstrated on the model first, then had her try it herself...especially when you showed her how to correct the mistakes. The part about pulling it through too fast on the ends will definitely be a game changer for me! I’m looking forward to having PERFECT waves from now on! I can’t wait to watch more of your tutorials. I’ve already subscribed! Thanks again!

港女在愛爾蘭: I have watched half a dozen of instruction videos on YouTube, finally tried the technique in this video and finally worked!!! Thank you!

Terri Sanchez: Amazing step by step video! I've never been able to achieve even one curl using a flat iron. I can't wait to try again using your technique. I just watched some of your "how not to look aged via your hair videos" I am darker skinned latina and am a natural brunette. My hair has thinned immensely (now in my 50s) Especially in the temple are super self concious about it. I understand diet plays a big role as well as aging. What is your opinion on hair color? Keep natural dark or add add some darker brown to it? HELP

caroline john: Absolutely fantastic tips. The one for arm placement for the 'C' was brilliant, that has eluded me. I was doing the "end curl" thing too! I'm going to try the wave technique now. So much better that you have the model do it. Can't thank you enough!

Debbie CS: I thought I’ve seen all your tutorials but apparently not. Watched this after watching the most recent video. This is so helpful and I’ve been using my flat iron for making waves wrong as well as flattering my hair.

Tammy Eble: Hello, I just came across your video THANK YOU!!!! I've always wondered how the wave was done and you made it SUPER EASY to understand!!!! I will definitely be doing this on my hair!!! Thanks again!!

Megzzz: You explained that so well. Thank you. Now I know how to curl my hair.

Jane Braun: Just discovered this tutorial! So helpful—-have been trying for weeks to get these waves! Thank you thank you!

Orah Tipton: Thank you so much! I've been trying to figure out face framing wave for ages. I was using the wrong tool, a 1.25" curling iron. I'm pulling out my flat iron, now. Thank you again, you've gained another subscriber!

The Luv Diva Azure: I have struggled with this for so long. The models experience has been exactly my own. This video is super helpful!!! Thank you.

Mary Mote: I just watched this last night and flat ironed my hair just now. I cannot believe the difference! Thank you thank you thank you for teaching me new (to me) techniques! I am so so pleased with the results!!!

Amy Schulte: I’ve using a curling iron most of my life, off and on, but I just recently got a flat iron for the first time. Definitely needed these tips.

Carmel Sileo: This was great!!! Been flat ironing for years and never knew any of this!!! Thanks so much

Kimberly Sisti: I have the same wrist conundrum... these tips are so helpful! Thank you!

Sahara Raqs: I loved the simple tip on wearing a ponytail at night. Thanks! I would be so happy if you could do a video on fine hair but a lot of it! I am struggling with getting hairdressers to cut it so that it becomes managable. I always ask them to thin it out because otherwise the effects of the flat iron wont hold.

Lisa Kerr: That was the most helpful hair styling tutorial I have ever seen. Thank you SO much!!!

Savvy Serena: I am binge watching your channel today. I kept saying through this whole video "that's me" (your wife) I love the whole question answer thing y'all were doing. Now I understand the mistakes I was making. Oh by the way... Love your channel. I'm learning a lot!

your connection: This is great! I gave up using a flat iron because all I did was fry my hair. You really helped and I greatly appreciate this. I'd like to see results of the back of the hair please. I have a strong cowlick, and there's got to be a way to resolve that.

sowilo dawn: I love this! It's the real.syruggles we have doing it at home. I love how you Justin didn't just say "this is how it's done" then show the after picture of the perfect hair. I much prefer to see the struggle and the corrections for real! These are all the issues I have doing it myself, I like seeing how to correct it! Well done❤

Kathy O: Best results I've ever gotten from a flat iron. Thank you for giving me permission to turn up the heat. One pass, smooth, and I still have volume. Even on my natural gray hair. I'm 53 and have been using a flat iron for 25 years.

D MM: Love that you used the model doing her own hair! Makes so much sense!

Claire Bradshaw: Hi, this is great and has helped me loads! My only concern is that I have fine hair so I need root lift. Do you have tips for using the flatiron for root lift? I.e dry powder at the root and then using the flat iron to seal it in, or back combing, then hairspray and flatiron it? Sometimes with fine hair the flat iron makes it look thinner so I always tend to curl it so the tips are great.

Beautybytracilei: The best flatiron tutorial I’ve ever seen. Now I understand so much more about why my results are not always what I was hoping for.

Christine Cochrane: Thank you for this tutorial. I always find that the sides are so much easier than to do the back either with a flat iron or curling iron. Do you have any tips for using the irons on medium to long hair styling at the back?

Betty LUVS2: YAY!!!! I DID IT!!! I have had my cosmetology license for 24 years and could not figure this style out. Because of your video I have the ability now!!! Great tutorial. Thank you. I have gorgeous curls.

Kimberly Dorney: Great tips - love your kind heart and helpful videos to help us all look better :)

PaintByNumber MonaLisa: Great video, always had a hard time curling my hair with a iron-straightener, always comes out bleh….this really helps! Thanks!

M Coffeecation: Nice video! I’m missing the ‘hair styling gene’ and I did my hair while watching. Came out great! Thank you!

Sharon Williams: A video showing the model using the flat iron on the back of her head would be useful. Most difficult part of the hair to work with, on your own when you have lotssss of hair.

Melody Fields: Really appreciated the tips. My hair is fine and wanted to start with a flat iron. What are your thoughts on the wet or dry use flat iron? Thanks!

Jennifer K: I had no idea why I would ever use a flat iron on my thin flat lifeless hair. NOW I KNOW. Thank you for showing someone learn the tips! So helpful.

vagabonda sandy: I am SO glad I found this video. Finally, the mystery of how to achieve loose, beachy waves with a flat iron is solved. Ahhh, thank you!!!

Maggie Watte: You’re a lifesaver. Thank you for this . I was really struggling with the flat iron.

Cherie Romo: You rock! Finally someone taught me how to flat iron my hair and it turned out so “contemporary ”, I thought it was done by a pro! It shocked us to see my hair look this good by my hands! Thanks a Mille! Keep it up!

Denise Gibb: Such a great tutorial! Can't wait to try curling my hair to see if I can finally master it with a flat iron.

TheMercyme: Excellent tutorial!! Thank you for all the details!

Kathy Morales: Such great tips! I subscribed and now I’m hooked to your easy helpful tips!

Diana: That was soo helpful…a lot of great tips! Thanks so much!

Tonya Richard: I cannot thank you and your lovely wife enough for making these informative videos. I am 66 and my hair is a bit longer than your wife’s. Because I too have a loving husband, I own a Dyson dryer and flat iron. I dry my hair with my head upside while using the diffuser and ‘’brush’ my hair with the diffuser in opposite directions to give my long hair lift and volume. Why? I have a physical deformity which prevents me from being able to dry the back of my hair without causing pain. When my hair is slightly damp, I use the smoothing tool and it leaves my hair smooth and shiny. I use the flatiron to my ‘curtain’ bangs to give them lift and make them bend back towards my ears. I wish I still looked like I did when my profile photo was taken in 2007 and before my 2nd spinal fusion. I have gained weight since losing my mobility (I use a walker now), but I am lucky to be alive. Which cut (if any) does your wife think would look best on me?

RVLiving.TheLife: OMG! Thank you for this! I have been watching videos of how to put the soft curl with flat iron, for months. I could never get it! I got it! On the right side anyway!!! I’m going to work on doing the left side. I think I need a heat glove, I’m so afraid of burning my fingers. Keep up the great work!!! Again thank you!!!!!

Christine Murphy: Omg I'm so glad I found your channel. Now I know where I have been going wrong when flat ironing. To me you are the hair GOD . Absolutely love your channel ..

Kim Carr: I have been trying to do that with my hair forever ! Thanks so much.

mysterygirltx: Video was very helpful. I have struggled with using the flat iron to curl my hair. This was an excellent tutorial. Thanks for sharing!

Nealie Rose: Very helpful instruction! Thank you!

Theresa Bennett: God bless you. Kudos to all professional stylist. I love groomed hair. I love pampering myself at my weekly hair visit. Thank you for the video. It was very helpful for my in-between hair visits, DIY. Keep loving what you do and making women feel good about their hair.

Karen Thompson: I love this! I struggle with doing the back of my hair. The wave looks more like a flipped up (or down) curl.

Judy Tisdale: This was so helpful! Thanks for the tips.

ambyyyy7777: You explain it so well!!!! Such small details wow

Monique F: Thank you! Awesome tips and I love that you had the model so her own hair, it shows me how to do my own.

Diane Anderson: Thank you thank you thank you for this video! I cut my hair into a lob and am working on getting waves with my new flat iron. I'm pretty clutzy but I think I can master this. One question: I have lots of fine hair, not chemically treated. I've got the heat at 330 and not getting a wave. (Also using Phat Hair and a protectant). Can I go hotter?

Kristy Leavitt: This is super helpful! Thank you!

Neecie: I love the fact that you have the model do the work. It shows us so much better how to do it ourselves. Brillant! :)

Christina Dennis: That was great! Wanted to get this right for so long. Question for you. I have salt and pepper long( same as your models hair) I use bumble & bumble everyday to protect the white/grey. Only straighten once a week. Would you recommend anything else to protect my silver sparkles?

Maria Winfrey: Wow! I tried it and it worked so well. I got compliments on my hair at work and a girlfriend commented on my volume. It is a subtle difference. Yay! Thanks Justin.

Kate Spooner: This really helped. I couldn't work out why some of the waves were coming out well and some no good. It's all to do with the speed. I slowed down & they all come out good. Thank you!

groove: I know it’s a 2 year old video… enjoyed it! Useful tips and tricks! Thank you!

Debbie White: Thanks so much! I have a short bob and my hair is very fine. Not one stylist has ever recommended this technique to me. It works so well...thanks again!

Julie Robison: Thanks so much! I had no idea how to use a flat iron to curl my long hair. Now I do!

Jo Ko: Thank you so much for this video!! Question: what if you hair was washed 2 nights before. Would you recommend using flat iron again and/or what product do you recommend on dry hair? TIA

vidya battula: I am new to your channel and with just two videos that I've watched, I am totally into it !!!!Your videos contain a lot of information which is truly helpful. Thanks!!!

Amber: THANK YOU!! I’ve never been taught how to use a flat iron, I’m 44 yo. When my 8 yo starts using these kind of things she will be taught the right way!

Rebecca Andro: I love that you showed your model doing it herself and correcting her mistakes vs just watching someone do it who already knows how.

mogue7: I had my laptop on the bathroom counter and watched this as I practiced the techniques you were showing. Worked just as shown (okay, maybe not the first time, every time, lol, but the adjustments were quick and easy!)

Delia Cumoletti: Love watching your videos they are just what I needed was the flat iron one thanks for sharing

Dominique Rugenstein: My fine, curly hair can never hold beach waves or curls when I use my Chi flat iron. Is the trick to let the hair air dry up in ponytail overnight like you suggested? I usually blow dry to get smooth and then curl with flat iron. It always falls out. Great informative video. Thanks! Just subscribed.

Ginni Oldner: Best video I’ve watched! I am confident now in using my flat iron to make waves!

wendy: Wow!! Loved this how to! Thank you!!!

Donna Ocasio: Bravo my man , you are a natural teacher. You going into the details was spot on.

Loretta Moran: This helps me so much! Thank you, great video!!

Brenda & Don: Your wife is a good model! I love that you use her for demonstration’s. I sent this one to my daughter. ❤️

Catherine Gardner: Very interesting Justin. I'd LOVE to see a video on beach waves with a curling iron from a true perfectionist. Also, can layered hair be done in beach waves? Thanks.

Eliza Amadeo: I loved the tip of drying the hair “naturally” putting it o.n A ponytail. Could you show how to dry it with a regular hairdryer? Thanks :)

Samara Sylvester: This was so informative thank u sm!!

Drewbaby Ape: I am glad you let her do her own hair. It made more sense. I have tried to learn this so many times but this video made more sense to me

wanabechefable: Excellent instructions. Thank you

Karina Marynowski: Thank you for your videos, finding lots of useful information for styling my own hair.

Kimberley Medenica: Thanks for this! You’re a great teacher!,,

M: Thanks for the tutorial. I have naturally thick, curly hair. Would like your advice on the fact that my hair texture changes when it's flat ironed. Also your advice on layers without getting " texturized. " or "thinned out. " totally ruins my hair when wearing naturally curly.

Laurie Ebert: I have never used a flat iron on my hair...but I will now! Thank you!!!

Toni Hollingsworth: Wow this helped me allot! It was very helpful to see her do the hair herself. Great tips!!

Norelys Lopez: I just loved your video the way you explained It’s so much easier. Thank a lot

Mahrukh Aziz: Perfectly explained ! I’ve been trying this and it never works

Luana Land: This was awesome thanks soo much I’ve been trying to do this for years with no success

Tina Ramos: I noticed that when using a flat iron to make waves, you retake each section back (in the same direction) vs alternating direction of each section/piece. Is there a reason why?

Colleen Nolan: I am so thankful that I found your channel although I seem to be a little behind! I have fine, thinning hair and in 1 video you talked about a particular hairspray/ finishing spray but I missed what brand it was. I think it was in "How to trim your own hair".

by ly: Wow, that's awsome - i didn't know how to create those waves 〰 I'm so happy I found you and your lessons for diy thanks
