Do not compare your hair journey to anybody else. This is your journey. Hey! What'S going on super excited for this video! If you are new to my channel, welcome to my channel, I'm so glad you are here, I'm a cosmetic chemist specializing in natural hair care and they create a curly chemistry. While you guys understand ingredients in your hair from a Cosmetics perspective - and I also help you guys start Hair Care lines as well and today I am sharing Five Habits to avoid when you are growing your hair, like you, don't want to do any of these things. Okay, let's start okay number one! You do not want to neglect your scalp. A healthy scalp is the foundation for growing hair, flourishing hair, healthy hair. It all starts with the scalp, so you don't want to focus on just co-washing. Only you don't want to just go wash your hair. We shampoo your hair, get that product off your scalp. Okay, number: two pH balance is gon na, be super important for a healthy scalp, acetic, rinses apple cider, vinegar, rinses, um, aloe vera, gel aloe vera juice. For instance. All of these things help to create a healthy environment for your scalp get an exfoliating brush in your shower for when you're washing your hair to get rid of any buildup and dead skin cells. All of these things are going to make up a healthy salad. Okay, number: two, the second Habit to avoid before you get any type of heat to your hair, like flat iron, silk press, coloring treatments, chemical Services is something that can possibly change the nature of your hair or it can really affect your hair, not only in my Beautiful sense, but on an eternal sense, you need a protein treatment. I had to learn a very valuable lesson. A few years ago I got some severe heat damage. My hair was not strong enough. Had I done a protein treatment prior to, I would have kept my curls way back when, but you live, you learn. So it's okay, but my motto is: if your hair is breaking, don't get the service like that color service that that relaxer wait until your hair is strong enough before getting these chemical services and applying direct heat to your hair? Okay, the third Habit to avoid when you are growing your hair, is do not let your hair be dry for too long, don't go too long, y'all without moisturizing your hair. If you are part of the curly chemistry Community, you already know about moisture cycles and how we all have a moisture cycle. There is a number of days when our hair needs to be re-moisturized whatever. That day is that you determine for your hair. Stick with that day be consistent with it, because you want to make sure your hair retains that moisture. So it does not break off, and breakage is probably one of the main reasons why a lot of us are not seeing the lymph that we want, because it's grown out of our scalp, but we're not keeping the lens so make sure you guys moisturize your hair. According to your moisture cycle, if you want more information on that, I have a link below for you for more information. Okay, the next Habit to avoid is giving up too soon, when you are trying trying out a hair growth, oil, serum or vitamin. We want things so quick like if something don't work within like a week or two we're like uh, it don't work. No, we have to give things time, especially hair growth products. I would say give it at least six to eight weeks to start seeing some results and some change in your hair, all right, at least because most stuff is not going to work within a week or two, but if it does, if you know something, I work Less than a week or two or even before six weeks, comment below, let us know what that product is, for the most part, most things on the market. It takes time so don't give up so easily on this product that you're trying for your hair, give it a shot. Okay, the next Habit to avoid is lack of consistency and having no routine no regime a lot of times. People want all this hair and healthy hair and there's nothing wrong with that, but they have no regime and if they had a regimen they're only doing it here and there not really keeping up with their wash days not keeping up with their protein treatment. Not keeping up with their moisturization and they're wondering why they're having a hard time on their natural hair care Journey, you're consistent with that regimen and it's working you're going to get the length that you desire you're, going to get the health that you desire. Stick with it, okay and the last habit, I would say to avoid, if you're trying to grow your hair is, do not do not compare your hair journey to anybody else. This is your journey and it's so easy to compare ourselves because we got Instagram. We got Facebook, we got everything to look at people's lives and see what they're going on and how does she grow four inches in one week. You know just saying but enjoy your journey. Don'T compare your hair to anybody that don't compare your love to anybody, focus on the quality, I'll say that focus on the quality of your hair and I promise you the quantity will come and enjoy the journey because it's your journey so yeah all right guys, hope You have enjoyed this video If you like this video, please be sure to like this video and to join the curly chemistry Community. L R-H: Keeping a hair journal, washing weekly, using hair rinses/spritz(every week), rosemary, oil rinsing, maintaining hair moisturization & taking charge of my hair & the products that I use on my strands - these are the games changes that has allowed my hair to thrive

Robyn A: Deep conditioning weekly has been helping a lot. I realized that I was waiting too long between washes because I liked my stretched hair and I'm kinda lazy, but my hair and scalp benefit from weekly wash and deep conditioner.

Marcy Wise: What’s helped me the MOST? Education! This channel (and a few others) with educated QUALITY content have been INSTRUMENTAL in helping me make great choices in my regime and product choices. Thank you Curly Chemistry! I appreciate all your hard work! Your videos and ebook have helped me to choose products and not waste my money! You’ve also helped me cut through the noise and not jump on every band wagon. Your excellent advice and well researched content delivered in a positive way are AWESOME! Following the advice in this video: a regular wash day, a consistent regime, healthy diet and exercise, good sleep, lowering stress, getting educated, staying the course with quality products, setting my hair at night (in twists),wearing a bonnet to bed, low manipulation, low heat, that’s what’s made my hair grow and be healthy!

Candice Famber: Keep hair stretched, oil rinse and moisturize BEFORE your hair dries out... These have been great for me, but I recently had a setback because of a ton of splits (I was forgetting protein treatments because I was approaching my hair from a low manipulation/protective styling perspective). Learning from that lesson, I will be utilizing protein more often - even with my shampoo.

May LaVerne Barnes: My healthy hair habit: washing hair every 5 to 7 days. Moisturizing every 3 days.

Kelsey T: I have learned to not compare my hair to others. My hair is my hair and it does what it is meant to do. No more days of me wishing I had someone else’s hair. Ever since I embraced that and not cared about other peoples tresses I am a whole lot more satisfied with my hair and the journey I have had with it.

Sunshine Sunflowerz 🌻: I just spritzed my hair with clove and acv and added some hair lotion: my shampoo day is typically every Wednesday because I’ve realized that my natural hair loves it when I do. Before 2022, when I had a fro, it was at its most healthiest state — I loved it and I didn’t want to grow locs. Thank you for this confirmation Tonya! Water and moisturizer are my besties

R Jackson: Using Amla and Fenugreek for growth and thickness. Also allowing my hair to rest!

Lizzie Clay: The one habit for me is just be consistent with caring for my hair and giving it what it needs when it needs it.

Ashley: After massive breakage from a bad flat iron job and using shea moisture my hair broke off so bad. I found low maintenance styles, slick back buns pinned with Bobby pins, water, leave in and hair and scalp conditioner has helped my hair quality tremendously and in a short period of time.

Stella: Yes consistency a regimen, herbs and deep conditioning! Great tips!

Jane G: Hey Curly Chemistry!! Thank you so much for the information, but I have to be honest. A lot of times I don’t moisturize my hair because of lack of time (I’m a medical student) and majority of the time it’s because my hair will shrink and become knotted, tangled, and harder to manage. So a lot of times it just easier to keep it dry and stretched (from a blow out) for weeks without having to use a blow dryer too often to stretch the hair. Do you have any realistic advice on how to moisturize hair? And I say realistic meaning that some people don’t have the time to section their hair, moisturize, and use the banding method to stretch because you have class or work @6am the next morning. I’m hoping that I make sense lol

Darren K Cork: I did come up with a tonic from watching your videos. All I know is I have TONS of new growth. Within the 1st couple of weeks I saw the difference. I start a small pot of water to boil. I add a couple bags of green tea and crushed ginger root. Then I add black rice AND wild rice. I lower the heat to a simmer and add red rose petals. I turn off the heat when I color of the petals are gone. Let it cool, strain it, then add it to my spray bottle. That’s what I have been using to moisturize my hair before I apply leave in, cream and oil. I would like to know if anyone else sees fast growth from this tonic.

L. Christine Jones: Adding a good moisturizer before blow drying is very helpful to my daughter and I. It acts as a heat protectant barrier and helps keep the shine.

Adora Howell: Moisturizing every 2 days makes a huge difference for me

SHE McG: ✨ Excellent tips, Tonya!!! This may sound silly but as a maturing woman with some health issues (Ex. HBP⬆️/meds ), I’ve learned to not even compare how MY hair USED to be with how MY hair is NOW! “Be fully present in the current season and enjoy”… A healthy habit that I’m reaping the benefits from is gently massaging any products n2 my hair & carefully combing through to distribute whatever I use evenly within every strand b4 styling… After a few days, my hair feels satiny - smooth like silk! So Thanks Again, Tonya!!! ✨

Elizabeth Moore: Hi Curly Chemistry . The one thing that has helped me grow my hair is protective styling. I don't wear my hair out often, but when I do, I make sure my ends are tucked away.

CurlyV SeedStar: Thanks you are amazing! My habit is JBCO ! I refresh my hair with it and Rosemary water with a few drops of essential oil ( peppermint or tea tree or lavander oil) I am 45 and I suffer hair loss and breakage BUT I have tons of hair and long because it keeps growing and new hair is always coming out and I think is thanks to this habit...Plus my vitamins

Latrice Byrd: These are wonderful tips, thank you Ms. Tanya, especially the intro comparing, that was an issue I had, also hair growth oil trying that for the 1st time and your tip on going about six weeks is going to help. I'm going to be going to Where my hair in its curly state for three months and see how it responds from there I'm going to implement majority of these tips. Thank you, and Blessings!!

Wendy Hill: Thanks for your last tip the most. I needed to hear that today in this moment I was feeling a little discouraged. Right on time for me. ....what is currently helping most right now is watching several of you hair angels and keeping the tips that none of you dispute on.

Eileen Ward: Hey girl, the one think that has helped my hair to grow and be healthy, is a hair regime. I prepoo, shampoo, deep condition , always use a leave in and I use a butter or a custard

IAm Zyire: Moisture/protein balance, hair masks, keeping my scalp clean & patience. Yes ma'am ❤️

Nicole F: You're so positive and informative and encouraging. I appreciate you!

Betty Boop: Thanks for sharing, i started using grease in my hair again after listening to one of your videos awhile back. My hair has less shedding, and it is retaining length again.

L'Nya Williamsmoorell: Keep wash day simple. Low manipulation. Keep hair protected.. Scalp message. Keep hair moisturized and use olive oil.

Cinder Ling: Hello sweetie!! Thank you again for a wonderful video! I think your PMP tip was the greatest game changer for me ever; just that realisation that hair isn't "supposed" to look to dry all the time, made a world of difference! I also try to be consistent, have a hair journal, use essential oils and dilute my shampoo. I have a schedule for keeping up with treatments and stuff currently I'm considering using Ziziphus christi again as a mild shampoo in between clarifying ones, so curious how that will go! Oh and my hair grew to my waist now, been going at it for about two years

Latanya China Rhodes: Being consistent, steaming my hair & deep conditioning with heat.

ElegantPaws01: Well said. I love how succinct you are. One of my favourite products are teas for moisture and quality diy oils made from my favourite dried herbs.

K. Gordon-j: Good morning, I love these tips, especially the one about not comparing your hair to others because it's your journey.. That's so true I had to block all those advices from people who think they have the remedy for my hair. I know they may be coming from a good place but no one knows my hair like I do. Since I've managed to take the time out to know my hair, I've come to understand what it likes or not. God bless you love

Cactus Flower: I love this! New subscriber here! One habit that has helped me not only to grow my hair but to retain length and minimize breakage was my co wash technique and pre poo treatment that I do a day before wash day, for co washing I use queen Helene super hair cholesterol to give my hair moisture replenish. For my pre poo I use sulfur 8 shampoo for my scalp and apply the original queen Helene hair cholesterol to my hair and leave it on over night, my wash day is a breeze because my scalp at this point is clean so the only thing I really focus on is cleansing my hair only—-This is very effective because my scalp doesn’t itch throughout the week as when I was using oils for prepooing like most youtubers recommended and for my hair, the queen Helene cholesterol prevents my hair from being stripped too much of its natural oils when I go in with my sulfate shampoos.

Remika Williams: Preepoo and detangling before wash day has been super helpful for me❤️

Chinenye Joy: Mine is consistency with my use of herbs. It changed my hair journey ☺️

Fiona M: Love this style! We need a hair tutorial!

NaturallyRoro: That one habit that has helped me the most… was washing my hair on a weekly basis. Before the natural hair movement came several years ago, I couldn’t tell you how often I washed my hair in hair my scalp was ALWAYS dry and flaky and my hair, PLZ was crispy and short like pasta. No vitality there whatsoever.

Elanay18: Hello ! Thank you Tonya The habit that has helped me the most is keeping my hair stretched most of the time.

Zecare: Love these tips ❤ thank you! Looking beautiful as always!

terri burks: Spritzing my hair with lavender water and applying coconut oil to my hair after washing has helped me a lot. My hair is stronger and very little shedding. I work out also and between washes I spritz with lavender water.

DKB: One habit has been taking MSM with vitamin C on a daily basis! Breakthrough results just from being consistent. I always had my hair grow up to a certain length but after about 2 months on this habit, my hair has grown a least 2-3 inches more than usual.

Sable 711: I don't know about a routine, but certainly getting rid of the relaxer and or the stylist that applied it has helped tremendously. No one can take better care of my hair than I can myself I feel.

Meriam H.: Back to the basics. Back to what I know worked and no more $20-$30 products that only dried out my hair! Wash, condition, leave-in, oil. The end.

MBAH VICTORIA: Hello! I love your videos .❤️I'll did another big chop yesterday (Second time in two years). What would you recommend for someone with high porosity whose hair hates protein?

MsTakiH: Ive got a knotting problem. I’ve always had very thick hair and although my hair is past my bra strap it suddenly seems thinner and i kinda feel like this could be the issue. It also seems like i have my curls under control and my hair is just “behaving “ more like it used to when i was a kid and wore pigtails, no perm.

Niah Gibbs: The most helpful habit has been following my moisture schedule. I moisturize my hair every 2 days now and my hair has THRIVED because of it.

Tanesha Turner: The Greenhouse Method was my key to success! I use a plastic cap for 15 mins after applying my leave in, letting oil penetrate or after just spraying my twists to remoisturize throughout the week!

Blackberry- Rose: Awesome Great video. The one habit that has helped me the most is just consistency and really paying attention to my hair needs. Tyfs

Detra Fortson: Wash my hair often and oil rinse. Thank you for teaching me ❤️

Michelle Giles: I greatly appreciate all of your advice. Im so glad I came across your video. The hair journal is the best advice you could give me. I workout daily and most of my workouts I do in the swimming pool. What advice can you give me to protect my hair from the damage of the chorine in the pool? I definitely rinse my hair out as soon as I get out of the pool then I go home and cowash my with a cowash conditioner. The chorine dries out my scalp so I oil my scalp first then I use a leave in conditioner. I Don't put any heat on my but I do color it once a month because I have stubborn gray hair. My hair is thinning on both sides of my head which is why I want to know what I could do to grow my hair thicker and longer.

KnL9713: I used to neglect my scalp too much. Since the past 3 months I apply onion juice, tea cloves or fenugreek on my scalp. And I feel my scalp is coming back to life.

Holli The Exalted Empress: The habit of maintaining good health has helped me the most to keep my hair. If I'm stressed, tired, or weak I can't manage my hair. If I'm depressed That will make me give up. So I do all the things that I can possibly think of to prevent disease and negativity by getting a new plan and acting on those ideas. When I'm happy my hair is happy and that makes me happier.

Ms T: I gave up on trying to follow several people on the natural hair care journey. I do the most with the least. I drink water, mist my hair though out the day. I eat to maintain a total wellness experience. I exercise moderately and practice not reacting to every thing. I also watch you and do the common sense things you advise.

sweetdream44: Moisturizing my hair every few days and deep conditioning my hair has helped.

Mary: Really enjoyed and liked this video because everything is so correct. Thank you ‼️❤️

Trish Ragsdale: My one habit that has helped me the most is deep conditioning EVERY wash

MomStillStanding: Can you please give some overall tips from dryness to frizxineess for us gray haired naturals. Gray is soooo disrespectful.

Anouschka Bernice: Olaplex! Their nr. 0 and nr. 3 pretty much saved my color treated hair after a few color/bleach disasters. I use them every single time on washday and my hair looks and feels much better than before. I swear, people in natural hair community are sleeping on Olaplex!

Curly Chemistry: Hey Curlfriends! Thank you for watching and sharing this week's video! To learn more about the best oils, butters, and ingredients for your hair; here is a promo code for the Natural Hair Care Wisdom Flash Cards, use code: "Wisdom10". Here's the link: https://curlychemistry.com/product/flashcards/

T2 Bless2: Hi Curlfriends I find that preventing my hair from becoming dry. Even if is just a mist from my water bottle and applying a leave in, grease, or shea butter to seal in the moisture allows my hair to flourish (This is my wish for any natural to find what works for your hair and follow what works for you and remember your beautiful!!!!

CShemica: I have a TWA and have discovered using mousse instead of gel for my definition. The problem is that even with a leave in my hair feels like a desert once it dries. I use my usual oils and butters once it's dry but because I can't stand that feeling I wash my hair every 2 to 3 days. It's growing and hopefully soon I will be able to do some twists in the top and coils for the sides and back. I also deep condition weekly and protein treatments every 4 to 6 weeks.

Margaret Gomez Pritchett: One thing that has helped me to grow my hair is to keep my hands out of my hair during the day

Tiff H: When you do an oil rinse do you still seal in your moisture products (e.g. leave-in, styling product) with oil (LCO method)? Wondering if doing both will be too much oil.

rmsnyman: Sticking to ONE product range for at least 6 months!!

Maya: Use a conditioner with slip and a brush makes the detangling process so easy and thorough. Not detangling properly would lead me to have so much knots because of all the shed hair that would get stuck. Finger detangling can only do so much I need to use a brush as well..

Celeste Rose: Yes. I am going to enjoy the Journey. Thank you

The Collective Mic Productions: Can you review step by step how to correct and avoid hygral fatigue? The habit that I believe has helped my hair grow is aloe Vera gel from the leaf and making my own hair growth oils with ayuverdic herbs

Holli The Exalted Empress: I'm still trying to get you to show us how you set this hairstyle. I would appreciate a lesson that helps us to try that method out on our own hair.

Janice Beneke: Pre-poo with aloe vera. Moisturise with water, leave in cream and seal with a light oil in the week is a game changer. I started incorporating tea spritz in my routine with Dried Jasmine, lemon grass chamomile, roasemary, fenugreek seeds and cloves. My hair is loving me right now and i couldnt be more thankful to you for all the lessons learned from you. Consistency is key. Dont compare your journey to others is truth. And enjoy the journey always.

Angela Lee: Having a routine. Weekly/Monthly/ 6-8wks, (Deep Conditioner, Treatments, Trims). Friday is wash day. If for some reason I’m not going to be able to do it on Friday, I do it on Thursday.

Patricia Allen: Moisturizing every other day & prepooing has made a massive difference.

Sharon Lewis: Hi, detangling my hair with rinse out condtioner. Has helped me alot.

Essie J: Hi. What has helped me is wearing hair twist extensions for 6 weeks on/off often throughout the year and still wash my hair weekly, especially after running/exercising a lot; moisterizing shampoo and conditioner; weekly deep conditioning; using Camille Rose honey leave-in and sealing with jojoba oil. When I don't have twists in, I still do the same routine but I also use Mielle curl custard as a gel but the shine fades after a couple of days. Any ideas on what I could do to keep my hair shiny while gel is in it?

monia52568: Hi I have natural hair been growing it no perm since 2013 I make my own hair grease and it works really great

Kendra Lee: Any suggestions for a good clarifying shampoo without rosemary, thyme or sage. I’m allergic and I seem to now be developing a sensitivity to products with wheat. My dermatologist loves the hair line I’m using but I need a good clarifying cleanser

Renee James: I detangle ONCE during wash day. I would overcomb with the quickness and then wonder why there was so much hair coming out. I finger detangle enough so when I use my detangling tools, I don't need to use them again. If I feel a part tangling up again, I'll finger detangle that section.

Sistah Knit: you always give excellent advice and you have so much knowledge. would you do a video on how and why you became a chemist?

Lakeema Earth: Thank you for this advice

Amika Lewis: Thanks. I appreciate this advice

Vasty A.: Please can you do a video on cholesterol masks for natural hair? I bought one old time fav (Dark Lovely Cholesterol treatment, the formula changed but it still works) but I wanna know if they chemically actually make a difference for hair

Nova Black: My 4b/c just likes it when i live it alone. I wash it once a week and deep condition 2x a month and everyday i just spray water mixed with sage and black pepper oils on my scalp.

Angela Gonnigan: Deep conditioning is a game changer

Bonisiwe Nyandu: Thanks you for the great tips

Vasty A.: Also how do I mask onion smell when I do an onion juice rinse ? That’s what’s stopping me from doing that amazing treatment

Tamara Jenkins: Amla hair mask, pre-pooing and low manipulation has helped me.

DivaAfro: Are you able to please comment on anything to avoid with androgenic alopecia? Just got the diagnosis and trying to prepare for this new journey...

Daniella Caden: Can you please do a video on how long protective hairstyles should last?

Randi Warfield: What are good wearable protective styles for high porosity hair? I work with the public and need to look well put together.

igbani Liz: You're a darling. I just love you and your channel. Keep at it.

Maafia Agyekumwaa: how do we avoid split ends, because it doesn't matter what I do they keep coming that I have to cut every wash day

Lawnas Journey: My schedule has been crazy these days and it reflects on my hair too. Been experiencing a lot of dandruff and dryness. Pls what product can I use for the dandruff? I’ve tried a lot of DIY and it’s not working for me. I need help pls

Kendra Lee: Love this!!

Michelle Jones: Hi Tonya what about rinses for color. I usually condition first and then use the color rinse

Southern Gurlz: MOISTURE MOISTURE MOISTURE!!!! Most products already have protein in various forms, except for Mielle deep conditioner protein free formula. Currently I have SEVERE protein overload, sooo much hair on the floor, so please be careful with protein. My moisture routine is outstanding now!!!!

Mattar: Prepoo for me is a game changer! Innate Life Scalp treatment on my scalp and argan oil on my ends solved my scalp and moisture retention issues.

Odessa Mcleod: I know that citric acid from lemons has anti bacterial properties that could help wash away things like dandruff and itchiness from the scalp. Should I mix lemon juice with my shampoo and wash my hair? I seem to suffer from dandruff a good bit.

DeepDarkMelanin: Lack of consistency is my issue.

Tahesha M.: Finger detangle with leave in conditioner

Lakeema Earth: I use sulfur 8 light grease, do gro and green tea tgin conditioner

Paula Johnson: How often do you trim your hair?

Regina Omoik: God bless you all !!!

ChapStick 4 ya Coochie Lips™️: Beautiful hair.

Pamela Forts: I usually wear a headband wig during the winter months, not sure if I will do that this winter.
