Hey everyone today we are talking about layers and how to get the feathered. Look so definitely watch today's video. What'S going on youtubes Steven, a salon guy here and in today's video we're talking about layers and the feathered look and how to actually achieve it. When you see this, you see a beautiful flow of hair that just seamlessly connects together and has that really nice connection? Why is that happening? Well, for a few reasons, because one its layered okay layered means that the hair is cut to remove excess weight and it has a nice transition going from shorter. All the way in through here also layering means that you hold the hair straight out from the head. Like this and you're cutting horizontally you're cutting vertically what you're doing is you're removing shape or layers from the hair or removing weight that allows it to have that free flow really when the hair is very, very heavy, it's not gon na. Look like this. It'S gon na all basically weigh itself down and almost look like this coming all the way down here, but because the hair has the layering in it, which is an actual haircutting technique. That is how you get that beautiful flow going in throughout the haircut. So a lot of times people see this and they go. I wish my hair could look like this. Your hair's, not gon na, look like this. If this very, very top piece here comes all the way down to here, because it's just gon na weigh it down, and it's not going to create that movement, so in order to have that flow in order have that feather type? Look you need to have your hair layered here's another example on a longer haired mannequin. This is probably like a medium length, layered haircut for men doll, so this could be worn for women as well. But, as you see all of this flow right on through here these pieces, these individual pieces and strands are all part of a layering process. So if you're getting your hair cut and you're, not seeing your stylist, you know or your barber holding the hair straight out from the head and following the head shape, then that means it's not gon na be properly layered at all. If the is brought all the way down to here - and it's one length, it's just simply, gon na make your hair weigh down, and it's not gon na, have any movement. So, even on longer Styles like this, you actually have to have some layers for it to flow back and remove some of that weight. Movement comes from layers. It'S very very important understand that which means the simplify it hair being pulled out from the head and being cut. Obviously, it has to be cut a specific way because you can actually build weight by creating graduation, which means that you're actually reversing it and you're. Creating a rounded shape, or whatever type of shape and you're building weight. On top of this, whereas layering this way it's removing it. Lastly, this is a somewhat very popular type of haircut. You know kind of a 90s inspired haircut where the hair kind of can flow over this way. You know a bit longer in the front, even if you want that flow like this, you want to sweep your hair over. All of this has to be layered. Now, can you achieve a you know, a nice sweep all the way over without any layering you can. But the problem is, the hair is going to weigh itself down and it's going to constant keep falling in your face. So by having it cut in a certain way or removing the weight that will allow it to flow better. And if we were going to kind of part this somewhere down the middle or part it like this, the center parting, then, as you can see, because it's layered it has that flow. So I just want to help. You guys understand how to achieve that feathered or layered. Look for men's hair and womens here, alright YouTube. Thank you guys. J.M. B.: As an 80s girl, I appreciate the feathered styles. Too many stylists cannot do this cut and it is frustrating. Must be difficult to blend properly...

Regis Filia: Glad to see this so clearly explained. You'd be surprised (or maybe you wouldn't lol) how many stylists don't really get the proportions of feathering.

Lizzie Beth: Your videos are always awesome! Thanks so much for the detailed explanation. You gave me a dose of nostalgia and had me looking at old 70s, early 80s pictures because I'm a huge fan of feathering, especially from that era. . I know I know, I'm telling on my age! By the way, was watching the Romantics video, "Talking in Your Sleep", talk about big hair!! Was wondering how much hair spray you think went into that?

Patrick Kendrick: So I cut my hair myself, started a few months ago and so far so good what do you think about using thinning shears as a feathering technique? Do you have any tips? Any recommendations are greatly appreciated

Shane: Hey Salon Guy. Love this feathered look but what products should we use to style our hair? What about blow drying? Thanks!

mission9451: Hey Steve, I want to keep my hair on top thick enough to push back but not too heavy when I let it down. In the past it’s been too thin and light to push back, so I’m thinking thinning shears towards the ends. What does your professional opinion tell you? I could see this work done for someone like Jordan Barrett

Victoria Lee: I would love to see this on shoulder length thinner hair

Frico1964: I work with a friend of mine I met back in beauty school in the 80's, we work with 3 new cosmetologists that have no idea how to do these haircuts or were taught differently...

Free Animals: I have longer heavy hair and since I'm getting older now it's all gray so it's coarse, thick and dry. I want to get a short feathered look and that's what I asked for showing a picture of myself going into a Fantastic Sams because I don't have a lot of money. This girl was chopping away at my head and I did not get what I asked for.

Justen Edits: explained absolutely phenomonally

NAOMI RATLIFF: Amen Frico!!! There are practically 0 hairstylists that can do this!!! Can you do a video on "How to cut a man's hair and not make him look like Eddie Munster???" Had one stylist that did a great job but moved away! I am going to attempt to fix or shall i say, Actually give my husband a haircut. So sick of paying $14 only to have to get it done in another 2 weeks!!

angel sunshine: Watch some of your videos on layering and featuring hair. I have learned alot from them. Ty so much for the helpful tips.

cynthia riordan: So informative! Love your video's!

have a nice day: Thank you!!I have no idea what it meant every time a client would say feathered...and they they would use older celebrities that I've never heard of as an example lol.

Katherine Korytkowski - aka; Kali: My hair is extremely long, can I still add layers without loosing my length?

Elaine Livingston: I just had a haircut and asked the stylist to feather my hair all the way around. She didn’t accomplish this at all and curled my hair with a curling iron and used hair spray after which I never use either of those. Now I am stuck with no style that looks weird and have to try and go to someone else in hopes they know how to do it.

Claudia Ferguson: I trimmed my hair myself because my hairdresser doesn't understand the DA cut from the 60's I guess. With short curly hair, I wear it in a sporty cut feathered back with the DA in the back(duck tail) feathered. Plus I have cowlicks. OMG. And I have bangs I can brush to the side. Thanks.

samruddhi sharma: Maaaan, I really want a video over the feathered hairstyle in a more shorter version just like the last mannequin ;-; this is want I want-

camsasser: Okay this was super informative as to what is needed and why, but you didn't show any actual cutting techniques to get these styles. I would especially like to see how to do the layering in the 2nd haircut (the mid-length guy's layering). Do you have a detailed tutorial you can link me to, and if not, can you do one for the 2nd style? Thank you so much for all your videos.

Judy Baumeister: Found helpful, will try.

Yo Adrian: I want my hair like this flowing into a mullet like ac slater from saved by the bell but hairdressers now days don’t even know how to! what should I ask them

Felix Spoor: Hey can you please do a Bryce Hall or Taylor Holder haircut?

Mason Solberg: Can you please do a curren caples haircut tutorial.

Samantha Jenkins: I had just watched your video so I can relearn how the feather my bangs because I haven't done them in a while and I forgot how to feather my bangs and I try to do them on my own without the video and it didn't turn out right so I watched your video we learn how to cut my bangs to a feather and I did it and it came out just the way I wanted my face cuz I have really really thick hair and I love it thank you for your video because it taught me how to reach and I love them I got them set just the way I want them my hair is parted in the Middle with feathered bangs and I have really long hair my hair is all the way down to the middle of my back and I wanted my bangs to be feathered so I watched your video so I can get myself a feather thing with my long hair so thank you very much and it taught me how to reach out of my bangs

Adrian: Can you please show us how to STYLE the hair?

Jaibosonic: Is it better to grow out my hair to a medium length before trying to get a haircut? Do stylist like more hair to work with?

Dragoness: For some reason, I thought from the title you would be showing us how to feather/layer hair and all I saw an explanation of WHAT feathered or layered hair is... =( I guess off to find a video that actually shows HOW to feather/layer hair, not a visual definition.

David Vera: Great video! What is the second hair cut called??

yoosaba: What would the 3 haircut be called? Or explained?

Zen Ultra: damn this is cool...now i understand bout layers and stuff

human wnfcisvniser: do one for kit Harington aka jon snow next please
