I don't know about you, but i can see a big difference even right now, while it's wet but does finger coiling work on every hair type, what's good everybody and welcome back to the channel if you're new here hi, i am your main girl, mel and we're Going to be doing a styling challenge today, a side-by-side comparison of finger coiling and finger rolling. What does it all mean? Well, these are just two different styling techniques that we can use to define and enhance our curl patterns. Now, if you have never seen either of these techniques performed on one's head, then keep on watching i'll, be giving you a demo. I'M also going to be timing, the whole process to see how long each technique takes and by the end of it, will ultimately compare the definition in the results which technique is going to be right for you and see how long that definition lasts with a check In in a few days for you that will be the end of this video, so without further ado, let's get to it. The first thing that you need to know when doing these techniques on your hair is that they are a form of manipulation, which means you want to make sure that you are being very gentle on your hair, because we don't want to create any kind of breakage Or damage to the structure of your hair, and to do this we prep our hair, maybe do a little deep conditioning, make sure you've got some protein and moisture balance in your hair to make sure that our hair is as healthy as it could be. However, what's great about both of these techniques is that they do help to enhance any damaged and lacking curl patterns. So if you are someone that struggles with limp curls or you have a damaged curl pattern, these techniques are really going to help you to get a little bit more of that definition that you're looking for. So we're going to go ahead and start and i'm going to start with the finger coiling technique, because it is my personal favorite and i am in fact a pro at it. It'S just a go-to. It'S a no fail for me. I'M gon na first take a section of my hair and we're going to begin and one more thing. Just before i set my stopwatch, i did prep my hair with my products already. It is very important that one your hair is moisturized. It is wet throughout the process. There'S every time that my fingers are not gliding effortlessly, then i will replenish my hair with some extra product or water, whatever feels needed, but pro tip i like to keep my product on my hands kind of in my knuckles. Throughout my process now my hands are dirty to touch my phone, but um timer timer begins. No, i'm not going to talk through this process, we'll voice over it. So that way, i don't talk about the timer and you know i had to bring mel back on the mic for this one for an excuse to bring back the mic and also so i could describe exactly what we're seeing here together. So, on that note, this process, actually both processes take practice. You can see. I am working through this section without even looking, because this is very much a feeling when i am finger coiling, my hair, i can do it with my eyes closed, i'm feeling at the root of each section. You can see. I grab from the root and i am grabbing where the curls are clumping together, and you can see this when the hair is brushed from root to tip the hair starts to separate where it wants to. Naturally, clump i like to call that a little curl family and we like to keep these families together, because when you grab too many families or too many curls, clumped together and too big of a section, this is going to give you this really kind of sausage-y. Looking curl instead of more individual curl definition, of course you can always go ahead and de-clump this when the hair is dry, but that does cause a little bit more frizz. So while the hair is wet, i always recommend to separate each curl, family and twirl that along your finger again, there should always be slip and your fingers should not be getting caught if your finger is getting caught. It'S because you're not moving your finger as you're going along this section and because it's helpful for me and especially for longer hairs in one hand, i'm always holding my section and then with my dominant finger coiling hand. I am grabbing the little curl families and twirling them along my finger. You want to follow through with the curl and move your finger downwards, so that the curl can coil downwards almost like spiral stairs. Yes, imagine your finger is going down a long flight of spiral. Stairs down, possibly a haunted house speaking of haunted, you know who haunts me: purple, pat especially finger coils done on her hair on wave, your hair that is more easily weighed down this twirl pull down situation with the finger coil might pull the curl out too much It may be spirally, but it might not have the bounce that you want simply because of the action of finger coiling as you are pulling down on the section, but on curlier hair types, where there is a lot more bounce and a lot more shrinkage. The hair will bounce back much easier or even all, on its own. In fact, this technique can even be used to help elongate the curls. If you are looking for more of a defined and controlled curly hairstyle now, let's just take a moment to appreciate all the angles here i was spinning and turning and angling and breaking my back to really try to demonstrate to you how to finger coil and yes, This was painful: okay, no breaks, my arms are starting to hurt, but there's no time to pause and again right here on my very last section you can see when i'm pulling the strand straight out from my head, i can see where the curls are starting to Clump, where they're naturally gathering together those curl families and that's what i'm individually piecing out to curl coiling it along my finger, isn't it magical? How does she do it time? Stop collaborate and listen 15 minutes and 24 seconds put your hands up. If your arms hurt put all the limbs up. Take a good look here: finger coiling on the brown side. I did wear this shirt just for you excuse me, i'm just gon na take a brief intermission and then we'll move on to the finger rolling. So, as i demonstrated with finger coiling because you're curling out and away from the head, this pulling motion might stretch out your roots a little bit more, which is why finger rolling may be a better technique for looser curl types. If you have more of a wavy hair type, so the same principles apply, you want to make sure you've prepped your hair with your styling products. It'S really beneficial, especially if your hair is more on the wavy side use a product that also gives you some hold. If that's something that you need so using like a liquid gel is a great option during the styling process after you already apply your cream. Of course, we do cream and then gel, if you're doing both or if your curl cream is moisturizing and provides hold. It'S a win-win for you now back to the techniques we're going to go ahead and i'm going to create my first section, i'm going to do a quick slow-mo before i go ahead and start the timer, because this is something we haven't seen on this channel before So i've never really described this technique to you, so i just wiped the product off my hand. I was distracted. You want to take your section and again, if you're doing this technique, you probably have wavier hair, which means you're also going to be taking bigger sections for more of a barrel, curl effect. So with this technique, instead of from the top down, we want to smooth out the hair, make sure, there's no frizz and flyaways and then from here you're going to start rolling it up to your head, and then you can very gently just let that release like So we'll let that curl simmer and we're going to set the timer because uh again, i've never done this to my full head, but i do think that this might take a little bit longer. Maybe not maybe you know what let's just get to it and making my way around up. My fingers to my scalp and i wind down, do not get discouraged when you are first finger rolling or finger coiling again. Practice makes perfect. These techniques aren't necessarily easy, but they do they do pay off. What'S cool about this technique, is you can even do more fingers when doing the rolling technique on that note of adding more fingers? If you have a bigger curl, that's when i would add more fingers. I don't know if that was clear, for example, because i have small tight curls. I am doing the one finger. If i had bigger curls, maybe on the 2c to 3a size, you could definitely get away with like a the two finger roll. If you've got really big curls really loose waves, then you can add the three. If you've got tight coils, maybe just use your pinky. That'S probably difficult: this technique is used a lot when setting hot iron curls or roller curls. It'S a very versatile technique that doesn't started finger. Coiling see what happens. Stop talking it's a very versatile technique that can be done even on hair that isn't naturally curly and for that technique. If you do decide to pin the hair up, you can see how i'm doing that on purple. Pat, you can expect much bouncier curls. If you do pin it up, because of course, it is setting the hair in that rolled up scrunched up clipped up place, which makes this technique great to use. If you have stubborn areas around your face, or even just damaged curls throughout your hair, that need a little extra extra, you can always pin them up and you can remove the clips while the hair is still damp so that they still kind of settle and look Natural, if you remove them when the hair is completely dry, like i did with pat, then you can see that there's going to be a lot of volume where those clips were. But if you don't do that to the whole head, then it might not look very. Even and just to reiterate, you can see i'm constantly keeping my hands lubricated with the styling product that i'm using to make sure that there is always good slip and every curl gets evenly styled and just to make note after rolling up the strand on your finger. When you are unwinding, unlike finger, coiling you're not pulling down, you want to be really gentle, so you don't pull out and stretch out that curl to maintain that bounce timer wait, i can't see. Did i get every curl? Stop it 18 minutes and 34 seconds. That was only three minutes longer only only unless i really want to start training for a curlathon. I don't know if i'm gon na keep doing that. I don't know. However, the timing was pretty comparable and your timing at home could be very different as well. So officially here are the wet results, because i don't know about you, but i can see a big difference even right now, while it's wet so i'll, be back when it is dry and then we'll really be able to compare, be right back all right and we Are back and small a little misshapen, so i haven't manipulated the hair at all. This is just completely dried. I wanted to fluff it with you on camera, so what i'm going to try to do is get some volume in here. I'M going to take my oil serum, like i always do and break up the cast, because it's a little bit crunchy from my styling product. Now we do this with an oil to prevent there being any static, as we are separating our dry hair with our dry hands. This helps to kind of seal everything together, as well as restore some of that softness back into the curls. Now that we've fluffed all that out, it's still small, but it's only day, one i'm sure over the next few days when we come in for check-ins it'll, continue to get bigger but sound off in the comments below what you think, the biggest difference between finger, rolling And the finger coiling is, i think, for me, one of the clearest differences is the fact that finger rolling created a more uniform look with the finger rolling. I was taking bigger sections, which is why a lot more hair clumped together, they all have the same amount of chunk and girth to them. I feel like a doll. This feels like doll hair, but on the finger coiling side, because i am curling almost each individual curl as i feel it. I was taking smaller sections because i have a smaller curl. I got a result that gave me really defined curls while still giving me some separation. The chunks are smaller, they look a little bit thinner and they're, also not clumping all together, and i can't even believe i'm saying this, but the finger coiling side almost gave a more organic look to the curls. In my opinion, like they still look perfect, but because they're a little bit more staggered a little bit more customized to my curl, they do look more natural, whereas in other comparisons we've done like the finger coiling to the denman brush. This gave that perfectly perfect curl that maybe isn't always desired. You know when you want a more natural kind of organic looking result, but on that note, let's see how these do in a couple days, we'll see you in just a few alright, so i am back with an update and um. I just can't wait. I just can't wait anymore. I have waited for this hair to grow. She just doesn't look, it may be super defined, but it's just not enough volume for me and mine, it's just too small, i feel so small. So let me just fill you in really quickly. I basically have not touched my hair or fluffed it too much besides in and at the root, but i haven't done any more separating of the curls from when we last saw each other, which was a couple days ago. I put the same shirt on no. I was not going to bring out a whole new shirt for this, so now, as we look at my hair after a couple days, it really hasn't changed much once my hair, dried, the curls looked pretty similar on both sides. Nothing, nothing too drastic! Nothing too crazy! You can really see that on both sides, the curls had a major tendency to clump all together and honestly. This is a little disappointing. I mean what this tells me is that i can just finger coil and not have to do the whole finger rolling situation on my hair and still get the good old, tried and true results that i want. But i know that the finger roll result would be fabulous on wavy hair, as i mentioned in the voice over, and i wanted to show you just that so remember, pat you can see on her wavier curly hair pattern. There is much more bounce on the finger rolling side, especially if you wanted to put a little pin in it to really set those curls with some bounce and to get more volume in the roots in comparison to the finger coiling side. And you can see it's a little straighter at the root, or at least there's not as much volume and the curl looks more pulled. So now you know, depending on the results you are looking for. These are just a couple techniques that you can use to define your curls at home. If you got the time and um, if you don't mind not having much volume, but at this point i think i'm gon na have to close off this video by breaking up these curls. I think for many of you at home. It may also be therapeutic to watch me fluff this out, because many people would consider this look. Undone until you really fluff out the curls. So we're just going to do just that who needed to see that remember that there is no right or wrong way to styling your hair as long as you get the end result that you're looking for, then you did it. So if you haven't already - and you like this video, then please give it a thumbs up and subscribe to this channel, because we put out videos like this each and every texture, tuesday, and sometimes more. I want to thank you so much for watching. I really hope that you found this video helpful and if you did and you try out these techniques, then please tag me because i'd love to see your results and see which one works better for you finger rolling or finger coiling, and on that note i will See you on instagram tick, tock and back here on youtube next tuesday, peace. What'S good everybody and welcome back to the channel today we're going to be doing a styling challenge. What am i a news? Broadcaster? No! Thank you! Okay! Okay, do i look cute? I don't know why i feel, like my bags, are so evident today their designer anyway, where my fingers are not gliding, effortless evolution, effort effortlessly. What was i saying, i feel like i already described what to do with the finger rolling put all the limbs up catch. The bottom of my feet, who needs a pedicure, that's me! So what do i do here now? I am going to serenade. You always carry backup dude, don't distract them when it was wet, looked drastically more different, but post fluff. I look normal now. Please watch this normal. What you know me, you know i'm actually the farthest thing from normal. Oh, why am i like this? I don't even know what normal is. I'M hungry, i'm too hungry to do this. This is my friend purple. Pat she's actually got this little electric blue moment happening in here. We'Ve been a little bored at home here, she's, talented, that's a package, i'm gon na get the door while you watch the rule. Oh, i hope it's something for me and not my fam good night yeah, oh good, i'm starving got ta, go eat, peace,

Sumie Antonio: Patience is the first product every curly hair girl should have

Katryna Raye: I always see everyone with damaged curly hair saying their hair doesn’t curl on the bottom but you don’t know pain until your top layers don’t curl I’m excited to see which side comes out better! Edit: I have followed the cutting tutorial from mell and styled my hair soaking wet. It is better than before!

فلوفي fluff: Thanks for the effort you put on this video, if I was you, I wouldn’t even think of making such a video You are saving a lot of girl’s hair life and mine too. Waan Wanag Santahay (Thank you in my language )

Andolique: I hate washing my hair. I mean it's a great feeling AFTER you do it, but it's such a chore for me. Somehow, Mel's videos always make me wanna go wash my hair immediately

Ana Beatriz: Finger cooling never worked for my hair (2c-3a), but finger rolling did. My hair was AMAZING, even in the day after. I never seen so many ringlets in my hair

Lauren Hernandez: What products are you using in this video specifically? I have been trying this for so long but my gel has such a strong hold there is definitely no slippage! I love your videos you’ve taught me so much ✨

Kerry-Ann Lecky: I have almost given up on my half wavy half curly hair until I tried your finger rolling method. It worked soo soooo much better than the traditional finger twirling method. For the first time in a long time my second day hair turned out amazing and even better than the first day hair. Thanks so much for this great additional tip. I will be making this a part of my routine now. It really helped my hair curl/wave better at the ends where usually it ends up falling out straight by the end of the day.

Emily Rodriguez: I tried finger rolling 2 days ago and I am LOVING the results! Usually i have to fight with certain hairs to make them curly at all (i have 2c) and this really helped!

Isabella Rentas: I found this channel during quarantine and had never been so excited to style my hair. I saw one of the videos styling Amanda’s hair and was so excited to see someone with a curl type like mine!! You are both awesome!!

Kaitlyn: Do you diffuse it or let it air dry my hair takes 4-5h to dry bc it’s so thick

Kaitlyn: Do you diffuse it or let it air dry my hair takes 4-5h to dry bc it’s so thick

Alexandra M.: as someone with 2C hair, I can't wait to try the finger rolling!

Freddiey Dances: I'm so happy I found you. I straightened my hair my whole life cuz I never knew what do with my curls, then in college I learned how to do braid outs and have been doing that for seven years . I'm so glad to see you and Amanda share your stories. I'm waiting on products and hoping to learn how to go full natural with what I think is 3a hair. Thank you

IndianPaintbrush1992: Oh my gosh, that explains so much. My curl patterns are 2B to 3C. I have an insane amount of diversity on my head. this might just do the trick for me! Thank you for explaining it like that and showing us. Any tips for someone like me with so many curl patterns? I would love to see a video where you work with someone like that to show your best tips, if you haven’t already.

Cathy H: I had tried the finger coiling early on when I was figuring out my curl pattern and it just straightened out my fragile curls. Makes sense now. I'll have to try the other technique. My curls/waves are still pretty loose so we shall see. They used to just fall flat and frizz until I finally got the right products, application and diffusing method down.

Pravljični kanal: One of the things I usually struggle with when finger coiling, using the denman brush or any other method where I style each curl separately is that my curls go into different direction (counter-clockwise, clockwise) seemingly at random. So when wet, I tend to scrunch them first to see which way they rotate and then style them accordingly. Just looking at Mel's video and the direction the curls turned afterwards, I think doing the finger rolling *under* the hair clump (‾‾o) makes the curl go clockwise, so rolling them *above* the hair clump (__o) should make them go counter-clockwise. I think. As I don't see what else would affect the direction. I need to try it :D

Sarah villar: Omg I love it when my hair is fully separated correctly, the only thing is my hair will clump back together in huge chunks sooooo quickly, I end up separating clumps all day throughout the day. It’s honestly pretty annoying lol

Espe Mar: Finger rolling works amazing for my hair, I have a mixture of 2b-3a hair. Its exactly how you mentioned in this video. I feel like finger coiling works better for 3bc & 4s hairs and finger rolling works better on waves

Tori Tee: I loved this video! I always finger coil my hair and am still learning so your tips on how to separate your curls & showing how it clumps and what to look for were really helpful! Thanks Mell!! :-)

Karina Rubira: I love your videos!! After 12 years of using Brazilian blowout I decided to go for my natural curls, of course that was a lot of work (lots of heat damage and weird curl patterns) and if it wasn't for you and your "seester" my hair would be an insane mess. ♥️ Thank you!

M: I just wanted to say thank you so much for this video, I love learning ways to style my hair without applying heat! I have wavy hair and have been doing the finger coil method for a while now, trying to embrace my curls but I found this video and -wow. So this morning I tried the finger rolling method and I am loving the look!!! ✌

Linzie Santana: Thanks so much for this compHAIRison video ladies!!! We so appreciate the effort and energy you put into these☺️

: Both came out so pretty! I always prefer definition over volume on myself but even more so I’ll stretch my curls without heat for illusion of length. Once my hair grows longer I will try these. The shrinkage that comes with the super defined curls on me makes me sad lol

Lori Stewart: I have wavy hair and just like you said when I finger coil I end up with long stringy hair. I agree that finger rolling might be a better choice for me. Thanks so much for making this video. I saw it on Instagram but you explained it better. Has anyone seen the curlers that you slide right at your roots to get volume? they have mixed reviews. Some people say they end up with bumps because they have a clip like closer on the top. But please let me know what you think

Heismyrock3: Perfect timing! My hair has been changing since I hit my 30s and for the first time I have wave. I struggle with getting volume and curl at the roots. Can’t wait to try the finger rolling on my wash day!

Maureen Levy: Thank you so much Mell, for always keeping us wavies in mind! We love you despite your gorgeous, glamourous uniform curls!!!

Samantha Sick: I love that you did this! Finger cooking doesn’t work for my curl type (2c to 3a) they naturally look like curling wand curls but I have a few pieces that act up because I’m color processed. I’m very excited to try this technique!

Shanna Campbell-Yeaney: Tried finger rolls today in my flat spots. Wow volume! Will be working on perfecting this technique to combat the thinning and dreaded lack of volume. Thanks for sharing the knowledge!

mackenzie j.: Thank you so so much for including purple pat for wavies like me!! I love your videos and how much personality you bring to them, but I can’t always follow the tips exactly since I have a much looser curl pattern. So grateful you’ve started including wavy tips too!! You seesters are the greatest!!

Victoria T.: Mell, Amanda, thank you! Amazing video and editing as always! I have wavier hair and finger coiling never worked for me. Now I know I have another option and definitely will try the finger rolling! Much love from Bulgaria! ♥️

MF Ew: I just started a journey in accepting my curly hair and trying to style it. After years of perm treatments, right now, I only have a curly pattern in my roots. But this video was so good. I now understand different methods. You are an angel for making these videos!

Ash K: THANK YOU for introducing me to finger rolling! You have saved my hair! I got a not-so-great short hair cut, but this is really helping to get my curls and waves back in order after being cut down too much.

Sunshine ☀️: Oh Mel I have to say as a wavy curly girl I am So thankful for the time you took to do this video it’s a total game changer

Katie: Happy texture Tuesday! (although since taking Mell's advice, the only texture I feel is SOFT!) Love these videos! #proteinmoisturebalance!

Wanda Scholtens: I really liked the finger coiling side. I do shingling on my type 4 hair which is basically finger coiling. I think the finger rolling side after several days started to look a little frizzy and losing it’s curl. That’s just me ‍♀️ Thanks for this video.

Fraeulein.Cheesica: Mel? I honestly love you and your content. Changed my hair-life-balance so much. You were the first hair stylist and curly girl who didn't judges blowing out from time to time. Your videos helped me so much, love my hair now. Thank you. ♥

Anastasia K: I was really disappointed when trying finger coiling technique on my waivy hair, which was recommended by each and every curly blogger. Finger coiling made even worse on my hair. And now, after your video, I am REALY thankful to you for the finger rolling technique, which added way more volume and definition on my waives. Thank you so much for this video, for new useful information and your charisma

Noehmi: I have used the Finger Coiling technique for about a year and it has made my curls so much more defined and they are clumping better. I have a curl pattern between your hair and Amanda's and the length goes to just past my mid back, so it's long. it does take A LONG TIME lol to do this, but the results are so worth it!!

Gioconda Mirra: I have a mixture of thick 2c-3b waves and curls and I could never explain why my curls would loose their spring and bouncy quality when I finger curled or used a denman brush!! I’m so hyped to try out the rolling method❤️❤️❤️

Urita Abdelmasih: I learned this finger coiling method from you a while ago and it's a game changer or me THANK YOU MELL!!!! (And Amanda too of course I learned from the demo on her hair and her editing obviously) love you both ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

R: I have 3B/3C hair. The twirling gave me nicely defined curls. The rolling worked best on my bangs. Very happy with the results. Thank you!

Caroline Park: I’ve done fingercoiling to my 2b/2c hair and I’ve gotten some decent results but those stretched curls have been present. I’m definitely going to try finger rolling the next time I have time to style my hair (and won’t be squashing it under a hat all day at work).

Cobus Thuynsma: The end result on both looks pretty good, however I think the Denman brush technique give better result with more volume. Lovely video as always Mell:)

Florentina Fine Art: Hi Mel my name is Florentina and I owe you a big thank you for all that you do!! I am 4 weeks into my journey and I've learned so much from you. So THANK YOU

songoffirefly: Thank you so much for this video!! Yo have no idea how my routine needed this explanation! For months I have been struggling with a lot of frizz in my hair and it was driving me crazy because I was following the recommendations of the moisture-protein balance and using thermo-protection before diffusing my hair. I didn't know if it was my products or my hair since I have been curly for just 1 year (I did the big cut!!). Turns out it was because I didn't finger coil following the family group hair I had! I was taking big portions of my hair to end faster and separating them afterward with oil when the hair was dry, but the big clumps didn´t last the next day even while using protection to sleep. Today in my wash day I finger coiled my hair, and learned that my curls are tight so I kept it that way... and the difference could be seen even when my hair was damp! And dry my hair looked even better. ZERO FRIZZ! I wonder if that's the reason why my second-day hair didn't last, so I guess I will find it tomorrow. Thanks again, Mel. <3

Mia E. Carangi: I have very clumsy hands, and it's still hard for me to use my denman brush at times, especially on the back of my head, but I am very intrigued by finger rolling because I have looser 3A-3B curls and this could be a great way for me to encourage more barrel ringlets.

J Font: Thank you for all your videos Mel!! You saved mine and my daughter's hair :)

ForeverDreamWithinADream: I think finger roller would work best for me. I have been trying to learn pin curls, so this might help with that. My roots tend to be flat/straight, so it might add more volume. Goes to show you that each hair is different and just have to experiment with which technique works the best for you.

Arypie1121: I have very thin, fine, mixed curl sizes. I tried the finger rolling yesterday and loved it! Quick question does it matter if you roll over or under?

Michelle Bouwman: My hair naturally goes from 2A till 3A and finger coiling never worked. Rolling it is. If you would like to have more individual curls like Mel with the coiling technique, then you should take smaller sections. I personally only use the rolling technique on 2A, 2B sections

Maureen Levy: I am so excited. I tried this on my wavy hair around the crown this morning. I am not coordinated enough for finger rolling but I coiled it around a tapered mascara tube just as if it was my finger and I pinned it up and have beautiful curls I'm so excited! Thanks Mell!

Fidelina Pineda: Thank you so much for the vid. Honestly no one had ever explained the finger coiling and rolling was different, for different hair types. Like the bottom, below my ears is so straight but everything above it is a 2c. So now I know that rolling would be better for me. I had actually thought about bin the curl method. Since I noticed that nothing I do seems to work on that part of my hair. I felt self conscious of hair for having to bin the curl, so that I can actually have everything look put together. Not like I got lazy and didn't do my bottom hair. Thanks again lots of luv

Grace T: I have been really struggling with the right section of my bangs (the curls are so much looser than on the left section and it's really hard to get them to look uniform, not even finger coiling worked, really frustrating) I tried rolling that section and it's actually done something! I hope that I can train it back to the way it was with the rolling method

T J: I've learned that I've had to finger coil taught from the root but midway down the hair I have to hold the hair clump up and then continue the finger coiling on the rest of the length to achieve a curl that won't fall like a stretched out noodle. Now that you've shown this finger rolling technique I shall try it! Also, I love that ur video has time stamps. I'll watch the video through, more times than not for entertainment/listening learning at work, but I like to go back to the exact step I need when I am actually going to practice it. Luv yous.

Tany: I cannot wait to try finger rolling. I’ve been doing the coiling and after the first day my curls fall! I’m around a 2C-3A I needed this!

lєѕlιє: I LOVE how my hair turns out with both techniques but it takes sooo long

sad kitty: i am going to try finger rolling on the under part of my hair which is literally almost straight ughhh and also on the back where it’s more wavy! i have perfect bouncy tight curls in the front so i might need both of these techniques. thanks for sharing Mell

Ian Nicollette: You saved me girl, I was about to shave my head. I have a 2c wavy hair and after 3 months doing fingers coils I was close to straight it . I don’t like the elongated result of finger coils in my hair. Thanks again

Lauren Freund: I might have to try the finger rolling method. My hair is a mix of 2c-3a so this might work better to help define the curls as I’m working on repairing them after getting a little too hair dye happy over the past few years. I might also need to practice finger coiling more (when I don’t use my denman brush for styling) to get the hang on figuring out which way my hair curls naturally

Lisa Townsend: Is anyone else jealous of "Purple Pat?" She gets her hair done by Mell.

Debbie Forseth: It was wash day when I watched this. My bangs have never responded to finger coiling and now I know why. I finger rolled them and I LOVE them. I’ll be doing it again. Thank you.

Bernadette Sanderson: Thanks Mell! I’ve been wondering why finger coiling seems to just make me lose my curls. Looking forward to giving finger rolling a try!

Ivo Kiz: First of all your videos are THE BEST!!! And I so needed to see that finger rolling part cause I did try the finger coiling on my 2b hair and it totally stretched my curls/waves out and wasn't working for me. So, i will definitely give the finger rolling a try. Thank you!!!

Harmony Parker: So for me, I had cut my hair in layers a little over a year or 2 ago. I had my hair like that for a bit, but I eventually decided to grow it back to one length. I'm pretty close to that goal right now but something I've noticed is that for one, the bottom half of my hair seems to grow a little faster, so thats usually what I trim every couple of months. And two, when that bottom half starts to get a little too long, it looks kind of thin and stringy when it dries, and it just looks weird cause then my curls look super uneven, the bottom being stringy, but the rest of the hair is very defined and bouncy. I also have a tighter curl pattern like Mel, but i'm thinking that if I do the finger coils on the bottom half, if wont look so thin and stringy, and will create a bit of a bigger and bouncier curl.

DanielaChris: I've been trying to get a hang of finger coiling for a few months, but still no luck... Finger rolling, on the other hand, worked at the first try! Thank you Mell so much!

Terry: Great experiment! I have wavy hair (with a few rogue curly curls) and I will give finger rolling a shot. I appreciate SO MUCH your videos! Thanks so much and hugs from Louisiana!

Kayleigh Filton: Thank you! I am saved! Finger coiling works on my mostly-3b hair, but not on the wavy parts closer to my neck. Excited to try finger rolling!

Bex: Thank you for demonstrating on multiple curl types! I'm really excited to try out finger rolling my type 2 hair

Julia Zaniewski: Wow this is so cool!!! I’ve never styled my full hair like this before! I might try out the way you do this on my hair and post a video!!☺️Thank you so much!!!

Marron Stone: The finger rolling looks like some of my natural strands as well! Gonna give that a try sometime, since I'm a wavy with some 3A in there. Curious to see what it does!

Gwen: THIS! Finger rolling! I've been struggling to get definition at all because I have very long fine hair and even finger coiling "worked" in some places but seemed to stretch my hair out. Thank you!!! The finger rolling actually works for my hair type!

ShareeDeeJA🇯🇲: I loved this! And...me!‍♀️ I needed to see the separation LOL! I've only finger coiled once because it took sooo long lol between the styling, the drying and the separation but man was it pretty. By the way..did you diffuse or air dry?

Kimi Spicri: I am so happy you did this. I tried both of these methods and failed miserably. I think I was pulling too hard. I thinking my hair might like the finger rolling method better. Hopefully, my arms will hold out as long as your did. I definitely love your hair fluffy.

Dasha Garcia: I’ve got a whole bunch of textures in between wavy and curly (2abc, 3bc) so I’ll probably try both of them out at the same time, finger coiling on the curly parts and finger rolling on the wavy parts and maybe just do finger rolling all around the next time

Cami Perez: 2c/3a here! Definitely trying finger roiling next wash day, my roots are always flat bc my hair is getting long and heavy, hopefully it will help. Thanks Mell!

Amanda: I’ve been doing a finger roll-coil hybrid without even knowing it. thanks for doing this! I’m gonna stick to rolling next wash day.

Trish W: Hahaha i used to do finger rolling with bigger sections to create cool bun looks and I would pin the rolled up sections to my head, had no idea this was a thing for curls.... Thanks Mel! Great video as always, is next Tuesday here yet..... Also, the “i look normal” part in the bloopers killed me, frigin hilarious!!

anne halim: Hey queen, thanks for the awesome video! Do you have any tips for better/cleaner sectioning? I struggle with all the styling techniques because I've got MUCH thicker hair and it seems impossible to get clean sections which causes insane frizz :(

Ameni Marzouki: Why are you so perfect Mell ? You litterally saved my hair two years ago ive been following and learning step by step all the curly girl method from you and now you're my favorite YouTubeur . I mean its impossible how much i love my hair nowadays comparing to my childhood (i always wanted straight hair as a kid but now i cant think of it in another way , i actually didnt straightened it since 2 years) Please answer YOU ARE A HERO A LIFE SAVER AND A SOURCE OF CONFIDENCE (considering that my hair now is my confidence)

MissB: Mel, I saw that with the finger rolling you were setting the hair facing forward even though the rolling itself just goes up. Don't know if I'm explaining myself, I just wanted to make sure that with this method you can also pull the curls/waves away from the face to give it more volume. Really curious about trying this, finger coiling does nothing on my waves

Evelyn Pagán-Kuria: Omg I just did the finger coiling for literally the first time in my life! And I love love my hair! Keep doing what you do. Many blessings to you, your mom and your sista!

PotionsMaster007: Currently in the process of drying after coiling my entire head of 70cm hair. It’s a practice to see if it’s the technique I should do for my wedding, I really hope it turns out as beautiful as mells. Given my hair is super fine, super dense and super long with tiny clumps the coiling took an hour and I’m not sure I did a good job. But here’s to hoping EDIT: nah I don't think its worth it for me, took too long and gave me a result that is only slightly better than the simpler denmann method. i think ill just coil the front so my hands don't die ha

Kiara and Celi: since my hair type is around 2a and 2b, finger rolling doesn't take as long for me because my waves are so much larger and don't need as much time, so finger rolling definitely helped

Lauren Hannel: GIRL! HowDidYouKnow?!? I almost wrote you a message asking about my flat curls above my ears! Trying this today! Thanks for all the great content!

Rach: Hi Mel, I have 2c hair but my curls go in different directions, so if i finger roll the curl in the wrong direction it ends up being super wonky. Should i be using this technique or only scrunching? Or should i finger coil only in the direction the hair curls? (That might be difficult to do) thanks for the help!

333kez: You are literally my hair goddess, since watching you I've found my curls again, thank you

Mere R: Amazing Video!! I can’t wait to try both techniques and see how my hair looks! I usually finger roll my bangs to get more definition because those are my stubborn hair ! Lol

sunray00: Looking forward so much to this video. I use both methods but never gotten real deeply into the technique. Mell you're our main girl keep it cominn'

Tracy Moore: Thanks for this. I definitely have 2a to 2b and this tutorial has now given me a technique which may work better with my hair.

Andrea O'Connor: I feel like both techniques are so good it just depends what your hair type is and what results you want... I have 2C/3A hair and hair coiling has NEVER worked for me ! Finger rolling is it!

4jkarnold: Thank you so much Mel for doing this video. I didn’t realize that when I was coiling that I was actually pulling out the curl because I have Pat’s type of hair. here

Kaylene Cordero: I’ve got 3b curls and I’ve finger rolled before but I find that it leaves my hair a little more tangled on wash day because the sections I grab are always too big and never in the right curl family so they clump together too much gonna try to finger coil but I love volume so I’m torn thanks Mel!!!

Natalie S: Ahh it’s so interesting to see these side by side! Whenever I’ve tried finger coiling my fine hair they just hang limply!

Jehnna Keshishian: I did it!! Lol. I chose to use the finger rolling technique because I am wavy and it turned out AMAZING! When I first watched your video you said you can feel the curl families and I did not think I could get the feel for it, but once I got started I really did feel them and could do it without looking in the mirror! Woohoo! Love your content! It’s super informative and helpful!

Trish Pipkins: I definitely need to try the finger rolling. I've never even seen it before. So cool! Maybe I'll like the look it gives me better. Thanks for all you do for us! My OCD would go crazy with two different techniques. Lol. You rock.

Stefanie Martens: Mel! Love your energy! Love your curls! Total fan.

Alex Pond: Love you! My hair never looked better, since I discovered you and that I've got 2c, 3a hair. Always treated it wrong, because it's straight when wet and awkward when not tended to.

Annemarie Zammit: Thanks for this video! Great one & very informative. I found finger coiling better for my hair.

Crystal: Your hair is so beautiful. I would do anything to have coils like this. However, you do give us 2c wave peeps hope. Thank you for addressing all levels of coil/curl/wave ❤️

BP: Thanks so much, Mell. I always learn something new when watching your videos. Great instructor you are!
