The American Shorthair is one of those breeds that struggled to be appreciated., Even if today they're one of the most famous cats in America, things were different in the past. American Shorthairs exhibit a memorable look and are praised for their personalities. Together with Maine Coons American Shorthairs Are considered native to the United States.? That'S because they were here for a long time. I mean all domestic cats from America have indeed arrived from Europe.. On the other hand, they've been here so long, it's only fair to call them. Native., Most likely British people arriving in the New World brought their cats with them.. In truth, there is an undeniable resemblance between American Shorthairs and British Shorthairs. Back. Then cats were seen as pest control and were kept as mousers.. They were also present in the first permanent British colony.. How do we know that? Well, the ancestors of American Shorthairs are actually mentioned in a document from 1609. Times were tough back then, as you can imagine for both humans and their four-legged companions.. These cats needed proper bodies to survive the ones that did either had or developed strong jaws and muscular bodies.. In time things got easier. As a result. In the 1800s people started to appreciate their faithful mousers as something more.. At the same time, people became more interested in showing off their cats.. These hardy cats were given a name, but it was plain and straightforward. Shorthair. By the late 1800s American Shorthairs gained the love of cat fanciers.. However, the first cat ever registered as an American Shorthair, was imported from Great Britain. Weird, I know, But soon enough, other exotic-looking breeds were imported into the United States. People almost completely forgot about the faithful cats that served them during harsh times.. It took some while for the American Shorthair to regain its lost fame.. That'S because American Shorthairs looked similar to the stray cats living in America.. The familiarity of these cats' appearance made people reluctant to value this breed. 1965 was the year American Shorthairs got their official name.. Coincidentally, around the same time, American Shorthairs started to gain more recognition., But it wasn't an easy process.. Some breeders crossed American Shorthairs with Persians. This started to take a toll on this breed's hardy look.. Fortunately, breeding American Shorthairs with other breeds, was banned on time.. As a result, this breed's muscular appearance was preserved. Fantastic, as these cats are beautiful, American Shorthairs aren't big cats. They'Re medium-sized, weighing from 6 to 15 pounds. Males are considerably larger than females., Even so, they're more than enough to warm up our hearts. American Shorthairs are solidly built and have well-developed shoulders and chests.. Their legs are heavily muscled, a trait that proved handy for survival.. Everything about them is on the medium side, except for their head and eyes, which are pretty large.. Their full cheeks only add to this breed's charm, making them pretty adorable. American Shorthairs's eyes are almost round and come in any color.. Their expression is alert, curious and docile at the same time.. The most sought-after and widespread color is `` silver tabby'' with gorgeous black stripes.. It'S an iconic look for the breed as most American Shorthairs come in this color and pattern., But it's not the only one. There are many colors and patterns allowed.. The American Shorthair is one of the most popular breeds in the US. It'S consistently in the top ten of the most wanted. Breeds., However, pretty looks are not the only reason for this American Shorthairs not only look gorgeous, but their personalities are great too They're a happy medium sort of cat American Shorthairs are not too active, but not couch potatoes, either. They're, not on top of you all the Time but for sure, like spending time with you. American Shorthairs are pretty playful and keep this trait throughout their life.. On the flip side, they don't do much running. When playing they prefer to bat things around rather than having to run after them.. These cats are highly adaptable and are really good with other cats or dogs. They're, pretty docile and make perfect companions for families with children.. When visitors come by they're not immediately drawn to them, but are not overly scared, either., They love receiving attention and cuddles, after which they'll need playtime.. Even if domestic American Shorthairs have also kept their independence., It is worth mentioning that they generally dislike being held, which is the case with most cats.. American Shorthairs are sweet-tempered, but also listen to you.. You'Ll most likely have no trouble eating while in the same room with your cat.. This is a big plus for these cats.. If they sense, they're not allowed to do something they'll just mind their own business. They're, not usually the type of cats to wake you up in the morning. Instead, they patiently wait for you to wake up.. Their short coats make grooming them a breeze. Due to their high adaptability and down-to-earth personalities. American Shorthairs are great even for busy people.. They don't demand much just a few cuddles and playtime sessions, But even if you don't have time to play with them, they're pretty skilled at entertaining themselves.. It'S not unusual for them to bring you catnip mice, as gifts. They're, great hunters, but I don't recommend leaving them outside unsupervised.. A great way to enrich their lives is to install cat-proof fence extensions or build a safe cat enclosure.. It makes me extremely happy. American Shorthairs are so popular. They're, not only amazing cats, but are usually healthy and hardy. With the proper care they live until they're, 15 or 20 years old.. There are few genetic issues. These cats can suffer from.. That'S because they're a naturally occurring breed with a high genetic pool available.. On the other hand, some lines can suffer from HCM or Polycystic. Kidney Disease. HCM can develop in any cat.. Unfortunately, it can cause death at a young. Age. PKD is most likely inherited from Persian Cats, as American Shorthairs were once bred with them., But there's no need to worry, as the incidence of these conditions in American Shorthairs is rare.. What I always advise. Anyone looking for a pedigreed cat is to talk with the breeder.. Ask the breeder about the incidence of these conditions and other severe conditions in their cat's. Lineage. Also ask to see the genetic tests and screening of their cats every respectable breeder follows these procedures yearly.. But how can you find reputable breeders? There are a few ways to make sure you're getting the cat from a breeder and not a scammer. If you're from North America look for breeders on the following major cat associations, Cat Fanciers' Association and The International Cat Association., You can also look up The International Cat Association if you're from Europe or anywhere else. In Europe. There'S another established cat association, International Feline Federation. In Britain, there's also The Governing Council of the Cat Fancy.. If you cannot find your country listed anywhere, ask your authorities where to find reputable breeders., Also share the information in the comments. Don'T buy a kitten from anyone before checking they're registered and follow all procedures. It'S the only way to make sure you get a well-cared-for kitten and one that's less likely to develop health problems.. However, every pedigreed cat comes at a relatively high cost.. That'S because all the tests performed by breeders are expensive., So how much does an American Shorthair cost? Pet quality kittens are usually priced between 1000 $ and 2000 $. Of course, prices vary depending on the cattery, color and country.. You can also opt to get a retired adult about 5 or 6 years old for less.. Should you adopt instead, It's a question. Every future cat owner should ask themselves. Adopting a cat is always the option. I recommend, as there are millions of cats in need of a forever home. Stray cats, can love you just as much as any other cat and they're. Almost free. They're usually overlooked as they're considered feral, but this is a misconception.. Stray cats are domestic too.. So if you're, just looking for a companion, I highly advise you to at least go and check out your local shelters before buying a cat.. You can also find purebreds or mixed cats there.. I really hope you enjoyed this video.. If so, it would mean the world to me if you give it a ``, Like'' Feel free to watch my videos about other breeds and subscribe for more videos. Like this one See you in my next video

Daniel Hughson: My 14 year old American Shorthair named "Smokey" acts like he's a newborn kitten. From being the runt, to being the largest cat I've ever seen, Smokey weighs in at almost 19 lbs, and still runs outside with the other cats like he's a younging.14 years young and still going strong!

chastine yiu: I definitely have no trouble eating in the same room as my cat. She knows to not knock things over, or bite on wires! She's quite an obedient cat! The letting me sleep in part is super accurate!

Abdullah Saeed: I had an American Shorthair cat for nearly 8 years. I lost him in 2020. He literally was a part of our family. It's been 2 years now and I still miss him so much.

Drexel Gregory: Heh. People didn’t like it because it looked like a street cat. Meanwhile I adopted a newborn streetcat who was abandoned by his mom and HE’S FREAKING ADORABLE!

CitizenMio: Very lucky that you American's managed to get your beautiful local shorthair accepted and still bred as a breed in time. I love our European shorthairs, but they're considered your typical domestic cat here as well and no-one breeds them in my country. Too late now unless the Scandinavian lines take off, but those are slightly different again. I like healthy cats that look like cats and have a strong genetic pool behind them, having those bred and socialized by reputable breeders would give advantages that picking up some unknown stray would not. Unfortunately the British shorthairs look nothing like it and are becoming increasingly flat faced, a trend that I absolutely hate in all pet breeding. I can't fathom why any judge ever thought that looked healthy in anything.

Seth Markova: Your videos deserve more views. You put so much thought and effort into them. They are truly professional.

Mark Edwards: Yes, adopt a stray. It takes some time and effort to persuade one to trust you, and going from stray to chipped, examined, spayed, and vaxxed costs MORE than $2000, But shorthairs are wonderful companions. Of course, adopting an adult shelter cat is by far the cheapest, and they are also bright, playful, and affectionate. And if you want to do something good for the world, support a TNR program. Cats are very small, vulnerable creatures, and to compensate, have evolved a very high birthrate/ starvation rate. Evolution is stupid. Sometimes it doesn't select for the fittest, but for the most irresponsibly prolific. As is demonstrated by most of the people you meet.

Brian Weeks: I have an American shorthair brown mackerel tabby with some calico orange highlights. She is the best beast: sweet, affectionate, mellow and happy. Round face chubby cheeks big green eyes. The epitome of great cat!

Cheryl England: I have a adopt American short hair calico. This content is spot on, I was so surprised . All the personality traits describe my cat to the tee. I named her Sunshine Jellybean, she is beautiful and a mix of sweet and spicy like some jellybeans lol love her so much!!!

jay Kay: Wow i just identified my foster cat this breed, and 10 days in, this is VERY ACCURATE.

indra: It's classified as a strong cat, also cute at the same time

Jaime Garcia: My cat is so independent i love it. He does like catch large moths and small birds. Catches and kills some almost daily and likes to track them inside and eat them. its kind of gross, especially all the feathers. He does his toilet business outside with the dogs. Doesnt beg for food. Doesn't jump on tables or counters. Super friendly and curious. I've thought about it a lot, he's perfect!

Karen: I have one and he’s my angel.

Jay Alexander: Yup I want one, this is perfect I work a lot and would love to have a pal that doesn't mind that, Letting me eat, letting me sleep. I'm sold!

Stephen Durnan: I prefer feral kittens. They're everywhere and once they settle in they become great cats. Just picked up a pair of 8 week old male orange tabby cats. Still need their shots and neutered. Next month.

scout from tf2 real: I have one of these cats. She turned 7 on Monday and I love her.

MLP Pixel 727: The thumbnail is so cute that I squealed like a cat’s meow!

Lindsay Hengehold: Love these cats

Jack Rouselli: I have a one year old American shorthair, his name is Jax…..he’s the calmest cat I’ve ever had and he’s probably my best friend…..when I wake up in the morning he sits on my chest and purrs loudly, when people come over he’s always the center of attention……and he’s a turkey and chicken addict if I eat chicken or turkey he needs a piece or he will meow loudly until he gets a piece lol

Red Water: Im getting a shorthair next week! :)

Jesus True Light Ministries Pastor Bart Siegwart: Stray Cats Rule ! You want a loving , tough, healthy, vibrant, low maintenance friendly cat? grab a young stray American Shorthair from the local feral cat hangout. take it to a vet for a checkout and booster shots and bring him home. Males make better companions for men.

꧁𝔻𝕒𝕟𝕖𝕖𝕟꧂: My cat is an American short hair and she is soo cute and curious about new things and new people

LoneStarLoneWolf: No way lol my cats wake me up in the morning to feed them. Literally around 7AM, when I used to feed them, now they gotten used to it I guess and wake me up at that time

Samuel: Do one on the Turkish angora!

I love Gypsy life and me animals ❤️❤️: I have one. My Boy Padding bear Ted he’s mother is a British lilac blue. She’s absolutely stunning. ❤❤

Desmond Castro: Very informative, thanks

i love philippines: We super love your videos, po.. Please, Stay safe, our bwsr regards, Riana from Manila, Philippines

Colleen Bugaj: Haha who wrote this about their personality? My two kitties apparently never got the memo they can't stick to me like velcro, or sing the song of their people in my ear while I'm trying to sleep. I've learned how to type one handed because of my ASH.

Alanthier Seorn: We had one live to 23 and the other to 26

Cynthia Brent: I have a question: the American short hair is the same as the Domestic short hair? I'm confused that's why I'm asking. Thank you.

Sinetron: We need Malaysian Shorthair breed.

Annabell's Pet Corner: Thank you for another great video.

Sofia Moew: Pov you really want an American shorthair cat but your parents won’t let you

Beechgoose 1: Lots of comments here about picking cats off the street...THEY MIGHT HAVE OWNERS! Get one from a shelter!!!

INIR2: So basically an American Shorthair is an offspring of a British shorthair. Just less fat...gotcha.

Armando Villegas: I got mine for 3 bucks from the humane society and it is a 1 month old kitten

Hamza Khan: I’ve been waiting for so long to see this video

whatever_ImAGirl: My cat is an American short hair AND SHE HARASSES ME TO CUDDLE IN THE MORNING

Martin Shamion: Any tips on how to get my American silver tabby to stop screaming at night? We put toys and food out and have stuff for him to do but he still meows and yells all night

Puppycat can smell your sins: i have two, one named chi being a american shorthair mix with a munchkin, the other one being alot of a american long hair with a tiny ity bit of maine coon

Japp japp: So my uncle's cat is confirmed A.S., he likes to play bite bite, luckily I'm quick, got caught once and it efing hurts, but we're friends now...

Douglas S Robins: I need a cat that does not demand to wake me up in the early morning. I am retired and sleep in. Will this breed be good for that and just wait until you wake up on your own? I want a male cat because they are usually less skittish. (Also, I am not about to pay $1000-2000 dollars!)

X SILVER POWERS: Please make a video on Ragamuffin 101

cloudbloom: My cat is this breed and I named him Sir Dudley Pippin-Biff aka Duddles He was a rescue, my brother found him almost five years ago while driving on a mountain highway during a storm when he was only a few weeks old! We believe he might have been born on a nearby farm and decided to wander (he still has an insatiable curiosity he's very nosy). I had always wanted a cat so I adopted him as my son haha and he went from a smol, wet and shivering baby to the BIG 18 pound, happy & well-loved boy that he is now

panxiang liu: Can you get an American short hair if you don't live in America?

mr meow meow: Good video

British Shorthair Cat VenomFilip: ❤❤❤

h: understandable y they r popular

Shelly Webster: PLEASE ADOPT, DON'T SHOP!

Keysha A: mines chews on things a lot

Mark Edwards: Cost: I think a cat costs about $2000 a year. The cheapest possible cat, the first year, is an adult shelter cat. But every year after that, food + litter +vet is over $2000. Way cheaper and more affectionate than a human, usually lives 15-25 years. There are lots of humans who want to be dependent on you. Don't do it! Cats and dogs are better.
