Should your hair be layered, that is the topic of today's video, and what i want to do is help you understand what layers actually do, because i get so many comments and people asking me. Should my hair be layered. What should i tell my barber? You know all that type of stuff, so layering literally, is a technique used by professionals, whether you're, hairstylist or barber, to the hair. It'S simply a technique and what layering does and what it's designed to do is to remove weight. So let me explain what that means. If you've got very, very thick hair, what happens is if the hair is not layered? It'S going to simply just lay very, very flat, with little to no movement whatsoever. That is going to cause a lot of problems, especially if you're trying to get your hair to go back if you want to sweep over one way, it's going to be so heavy, it's literally just going to lay flat like this because of the weight. So when you layer the hair and this mannequin is layered, what the technique does and how it's supposed to be done is by holding the hair up on a variety of different angles. But it's holding the hair up and cutting the hair to remove the weight. The shorter the hair is right, the shorter the hair is uh as far as when you or the more you cut, i should say the more layers you're going to have now. That'S not necessarily a great thing because, for example, let's take this haircut. If i hold it - and it's say just a fingers length away from the scalp, that means, if i cut all this hair off you're, going to have a fingers length like this of hair on top it's kind of common sense. But it's going to be that short. So now, if we extend the fingers a bit more, this way, as you can see here, what's going to happen, is we're going to have this amount of length like that? We'Re going to have this amount of length, that's going to fall, and if we bring this all the way up this way - and we cut just the top section right here - that means that all this hair is going to fall down so the longer the hair is On top the longer the layers are going to be and the lower the movement or the flow is going to be. If you cut it very very short, yes, it's not going to be so heavy, but do you really really want short layers and also when it comes to layering, there's something you need to really understand and it's something called balance so if you've got a haircut where The layers are so short, but this is really really long. It just may not blend well, and it could look really really bad and it's going to look very unbalanced. So you have to make sure that the layering really matches up with the length of your hair. So in this particular situation, we'll get a little bit closer, you could see that the hair has a flow to it. Those layers allow the hair to move okay, it allows the hair to move freely and you can see even by me raking. All of these pieces in here are layers. If this was all one length, then it wouldn't be able to move as freely as that. Let'S take example, an example with short hair right. You could even have layers with short hair and it's very very necessary if this was all one length coming forward this way, and these bangs were only cut to here, it would look horrible. So all of this short hair on top, especially if you're getting your hair, cut and whoever's cutting it, is cutting off length. They'Re actually layering your hair. So it's something to really keep in mind. Understand that, even if you have a short haircut and whatever you see your stylist or professional, doing they're layering it to create a shape. So, yes, it removes weight, but it also creates texture. That'S something that's really important to understand about layers. So, let's just take an example of another haircut that has a bit of layering, but the hair is a little bit longer, as you can see, we'll run our fingers to it and look how nicely this flows in but keep in mind and take note of the Length the length is down through here now, if i had these layers way up here, and it was like the layers started up here - that's totally fine if it was cut properly and really really evenly blended throughout the entire haircut. So wherever you cut the first section that you cut that's where it's going to fall so remember when i said the longer you leave the length on the layering. So more it's going to fall down and the longer it's going to the lower the layering is going to be the more you hold it up and the higher you cut. It'S only going to travel to where you cut it. So the more you cut be careful. You don't want to over layer your hair, but keep in mind the balance. Like i mentioned when i run my fingers through it all right, you're seeing the layering in through here and that's what i want. So if you see a particular haircut that you want of an actor or some sort of you know whoever it is and you're seeing that their hair is getting that flow down through here. That'S because the layers are brought up to that point. So this will fall to this area right through here. That'S how you get that, and is it something that you can explain to your stylist or your barber you shouldn't have to. If, if that professional does not understand layering, then i would go find somebody else because they shouldn't be really cutting hair or it's not their specialty. Here'S an example of what happens when the hair is really really long and there's no layers. You can see the hair just wants to lay flat, and this is very, very common with people who want to grow their hair out or who may have longer hair. The biggest problem is: oh stephen. My hair just lays flat, you can see it just drops down and there's there's, there's no movement to it, right it just kind of droops down and that's it. No, no life, that's where layering would actually sorry. I wasn't talking to you siri um, that's where layering would come in handy because in this situation, once again the shorter you cut the layers. That'S where it's going to fall. You don't want to cut layers really really short, but what you want to do is create something kind of in the middle so that, as it falls, it lays in the right place all right. So layers really again is a technique. That is very, very useful and then last but not least, let's take this mannequin right here, which i did uh not that long ago on my channel, you could see that all of this is layered heavily heavily layered. This is kind of like my my mullet haircut tutorial that i did and by raking my fingers through look how high the layering starts it's starting way up here and guess what that's how long it is. So i really hope that this gave you all a really good insight, and this goes for men and women right. It doesn't really matter. Layering is a technique. That'S used on every single human being. So if you run your fingers through it, wherever you cut, how short you cut it, that's where it's going to fall all right, and hopefully this gives you guys a really a better understanding of what layering does and if your hair needs it. Let me know in the comments below, if you found this video helpful. Thank you all so much for watching, don't forget to like comment and subscribe and i'll see you next time for videos with a salon guy. You

don keyballs: Its been so long now without a haircut, the very thought of getting one scares me. Lol

Strapping Young Ladam: I had made the mistake last time I grew out my hair of not layering it for a while. After I did it was so much easier to work with. This time since I'm growing it back out now I'll take care of that earlier in the process so styling it at the different stages will be much easier.

average ;-;: I'm scared to cut my hair because whenever I ask for a cut somehow the universe finds a way to ruin it

Ella: I think I definitely need layering done on my next haircut. My hairs very long and thick, also it’s all one length meaning it looks pretty dull and flat. I’m not sure what to ask for though, as I want face framing pieces but I’m scared they’ll give me a fringe

Daniela: I have long layers but sometimes I want some hair cut where it’s disconnected round my face and neck but keeping the rest of my hair long everywhere else. My hairdresser rarely wants to do this for me. Could you do a video on disconnecting some hair in a hair cut and explain the theory behind this technique? I have really long layered hair but I always need more bounce/movement round my face otherwise it drags my face down and the best results for me is to disconnect some hair from the usual layers, (I usually end up doing it myself). Thank you

Nik N: This was hella helpful lmao I haven’t had a haircut for months and months, I’m just wondering what to ask my barber when I want the floppy hair look

Marty Little: This is the video I needed to see. Thank you, I am growing my hair and I think my last trim/clean up was back in September '20. 1 year of hair growth down.

Alex Chavez: Is getting your hair thinned out the same a layering or completely different? If so, would you always recommend getting your hair layered every time you get a haircut?

N M: Yo your videos are the best legit saved my hair lol. I was gonna buzz my hair because it mad long and I can’t go to barber because of my family being high risk, but me & my mom learned to cut hair from watching your videos. Lol I got that tiktok hair style now

SeNsEi Spxctre: my hair is layered one side and the other is not, i can’t wait to get a haircut

G R: Can you layer hair when trying to grow it out or is it better to just wait it out? It is very thick and I want to create movement and flow, but afraid to lose too much length.

J Petrullo: It's too damn hard to find a barber that can give you an undercut and also know how to layer the top of your hair....i live in NJ i think i may just go to this guy's salon lol

Laura T: Very helpful tutorial on layering, especially on the top of the head, thanks!

Brian Logsdon: Perfect! Well-explained!

Peacemaker: I feel like when my hair is all even on top it gets to a point where it starts looking poofy behind the fringe ..but if I behind the fringe it looks nice at first looks flat with the fringing coming out but then it looks uneven and messy . Everytime I go to the hairdressers they keep giving me a rounded haircut or uneven to the point I have to shave it all off. I've currently buzzed my hair off but I just want a haircut where I have a bit of fringe it looks flat and square on top. My head shape is diamond

ABCno 123name: What is the difference between your power cream and shadow grit pomade? Does the power cream favor hold and control more while shadow favors shine and texture more (still with hold but not as much)?

arthur: only if i could convince my mom to let me get a short layered haircut, this would've helped. at least now i understand how layers work

don keyballs: I'm only growing my hair to donate to kids with cancer, so iv never gotten it layered , cause being all one length is what u need 2 b

Jessica Nicholson: Very helpful video. Thank you.

Ramzi Khoury: I think layering looks its best on straight hair.. Watching live tennis, Rublev a Russian top ten, is suffering too much layering, he's got wavy nice hair, looks too untidy now..

Monika Varro: Thank you for the explanation.

aleariess: My hair goes all the way down my back and I kind of want the last hairstyle that you showed, I might get it during the summer because I don't want to get the attention if I get it while school is in session. haha

Mohamed Buschira: The best channel ever i learnt alot thanks

itsme!: How long was Daniel growing his hair out before his last haircut, I really like that style!

Nazriel Al-hafidz: Nice! Now I can show this to my mother and stop looking like I'm wearing a helmet

M. Jad kheir: Can wavy hair achieve the Captain Levi hairstyle by straightening your hair with a blowdryer/iron?

The Light Web: Thank you very informative!

mael yorn: So helpful!!

John Roekoekoe: I understood layering is above the ears, 45° up, and used to cut females because the haircut gets round and feminine. 45° down under the ears is graduation. Used for men. So men are cut straight to the side, or straight up to get the male look. Is this correct?

Pedro Henrique: 4:04 I found this cut very beautiful. You explain well.

sourav GT SHIV: Man you are great this is the video I have been searching for Please make this kind of video more

Punisher: Mans is making me regret my hs decision of no haircuts the long hair was me i just knew about texture not about layers so my hair was bad but girls loved it regardless Class of 2019

Pinemarten: Hey SalonGuy, have you thought of doing Tobey Maguire's emo hair from Spiderman 3? I think that'd be a good video.

marinst22: Please do a "hair metal" haircut again, but with longer hair on mannequin. That last one mannequin in this video has a short hair, but I would really like to see you doing that kind of a haircut with longer hair.

Elie Cassir: Bro my curly hair which is a bit wavy I can’t tell if it’s even layered since the curls just ruin it it’s always heavy and it’s hard to tell about their length always dry and I can’t find the good shampoo

Unknown War: Isn’t texture the top the same thing as layer the top?

Ayn: Should I layered my hair if it's straight wavy?

DanTheMan Bardo: Great video for sure. And I mean that. It's an important feature of haircutting

Ron Kumar: So you layer it cutting round horizontally and vertically?

I’m still trying to find the right cream for slicking back my hair but his recommendations were excellent. Thank you!!

Zack Wright: How long do I need my hair and how long will it take
