Well, hello.. All right today is going to be the wand versus the flat iron, because that video that I made is really old., And so I'm trying to make a newer one.. So because I have changed and my hair length has changed. So we're going to bring in that tutorial.. So I have a 25 millimeter wand and I have a hair straightener AKA flat iron.. So you can see the difference in the two and how you're going to do them. So the way that I curl I like to make sure that I'm adding volume to the hair. Isn't that what we all want. So, let's break this baby out.. Let'S roll that beautiful bean footage. Roll that beautiful bean footage. Drop it. All right. Let'S do this, shall we Okay. So the curling wand, I'm going to use mine, curling wand from L'ange and my flat iron and from L'ange.. The mission is try and create good curls and see the difference between how you use a hair wand and how you use a flat iron AKA strainer. Whatever your root would is, what do you call yours, A straightener or a flat iron, I'm flat iron, all the way. All right., So this side we're going to use the hair wand. Again, it's a 25 millimeter that I'm going to use.. I have a set. It 400 - and I have this one set at 410. - I'm usually between 390 and 410 depending., So I might even change. All right., So real quick. What I do is because I'm trying to create the volume right We want volume in the hair lasts for days. Those kinds of curls., So I'm actually going to be going up over my head to curl and we're going to be curling backward. So up over the head, because that's how it gets it as close to the root as possible.. So we're just going to rock these suckers out and create that curl.. So the last time I did this, I don't know., Maybe we'll plug in a little blip of how short my hair was from back then.. But my hair is definitely not the length that it is now. Not even the same exact hair color than it is now, but everybody I've mixed emotions with whether people thought I should grow my hair out or keep it or sorry grow my hair out or keep It shorter., So let me know which one you think which one you like, but I'm digging the longer, maybe for the fact that I've never got to be able to do my hair long. But, oh my gosh, I don't know how to do my hair.. I literally I'm going to be showing I'll do some beginner tutorials on how to put your hair in a ponytail, because I don't know how., I've never had short hair. I'Ve always had long hair.. I'Ve always had shorter hair and I've always just never pulled it up. Ever ever, never never ever.. So this is typically how I would curl it. Again, you can curl it like this and just wrap it. This way. Just watch your hands because one way you can do it easy and one way you can't, but that's going to be a way without volume.. The other day I had somebody messaged me and they're like when I curl my hair. It looks like a tent. And I'm like wait. So there's no volume on top., So you have all the volume down here.. But if you were to do what I just showed you, you would have the volume throughout. Okay. This one we're going to do and you'll. Actually, I just did a flat iron loose curl tutorial, just barely., So you can see that too.. But this one and I teach how to do this curl., I call it the ballerina curl., That's just my skinny on it., But where you keep twirling and twirling and twirling the hair in order to get that curl.. That'S the difference, too., So you'll notice that the curl is different., This one's going to be a lot closer together, almost like a curling iron wood, and then this is more like that rope wrap that you get from the curling wand. Okay.. So, let's just finish this out really quick, because you can't see the back very easily.. Remember when you do the back, though you for sure want to keep your flat iron or your wand. You want to keep it in the upright position.. So, oh and real quick also, I am an affiliate for L'ange.. I don't care what products do you use? I just started using L'ange because their tools were so boss. And then I discovered that how much I loved their hair product as well. And I for sure have favorite hair products too, just like anybody would with any line. Okay. I'll, continue. I'll unwrap this and we'll Get going on the next round. Okay, I'm sitting here, working and Mitch is filming me looking like dad gum, grandma, whoever you did. So Mitch is my video camera guy. If you don't know. Thanks Mitch, as if I need to feel older, already. Good job., I just got in town and my wrinkles are getting stronger and he put me as nanny McClellan on Instagram. All right - let's roll this out.. So this is, of course, going to be my wrap and my rope wrap curl with my wand. So notice how my hair kind of twists within that. That's going to give you that real prep, which gives you just such a fun fun curl.. This is definitely something that you cannot get from a curling iron.. You have to get it from the wand.. Now look at that.. Isn'T that so pretty I love it. It'S gorgeous., It's so good. Okay. We'll do the next.. Now, before I blow dry, I put my three favorite hair products from L'ange in my hair.: That's the Glaze hair lotion, the Whip mousse and the Salt and Sea spray.. In that order. The Glaze hair lotion is for moisture it's for volume and for UV protection. The hair or the Whip mousse is not a heavy mousse. And then that's for volume right And then the Salt and Sea spray is for adding texture.. So when you think about your hair before you curl and you're, like my hair, never holds a curl. What are you doing to your hair to help it so that it can hold a curl, Because those products that we put in our hair is to protect them.? But if we put too many soft curl to protect our hair too much, it can't curl and it can't hold a curl, because we have nothing going on to protect it.. You can use this heat shield or any heat shield that you want to use.. You just spray it in your hair., You let it drive before it goes in. And then that helps protect your hair, too. Or you can do something like this. Has this is called posh.. It has a heat protectant in it as well.. That'S going to make the pieces be very, very piecy and very sleek too, while adding heat protection to it. Okay.. So we're going to come in here with the flat iron and I'm just going to part this a little differently. Okay. And then I'm going to come. Here., The ballerina movement.. This is actually my bad side too. This side that is 10 times harder., So we've got that ballerina curl going on there and we continue on and the slower you move through it. I mean you don't want to move too slow, but the slower you move through it. The stronger of a curl you're, going to get see the difference with the two. So that's how I kind of decide what I'm doing with what I want. Do. I want a tighter curl or do I want a loser curl? What do I want? I'M just going to rock this baby out. And if it's starting to come out onto the side, just grab it and pull it back, in. And if I have to redo it because I totally suck, then I will., But you can't redo flat iron curls, ..., Good Job Joce ... Very much because it's straightening your hair., So you want to be careful of that. Too. Just get it in there good, the first time. Right Right. And I'm clearly not taking my own advice, wow good, job. Okay., I'm going to do the back and I'll come right! Back.! Okay, we're going to do this! Some more on this side! And you know what I think, I'm just going to speed this up for your sake, because who wants to listen to my commentary for 20 minutes, So I'm going to do one more round and then we're going to get to that top section. And then, with that Top section you'll be able to really see how things look.. So I'm going to do this round and I'll just speed it up.. You can still see how I do it. And then I will come on back and change. That. All right come on on back.. We have got the last set left to go and just putting that heat, protectant in. And then this is all she wrote.. So when you're at the top you're going to decide how you want to part your hair or depending on how what you choose in the end., The part can make a huge difference with the volume that you have.. So you can part it down the middle and then, after the fact, switch it over, which is going to get you more volume on the top.. But because we're showing this in a video where I am showing one side and one side, I'm going to part it pretty dang close down that center. Okay, now, let's start this puppy out. I've got this top section right, here., I'm going to clean that up.. When I ever, I do my front you'll see in past videos that I've done, I never start at the very top in the very front.. I always start just a little bit further down. And it gives me that Farrah Fawcett to goodness. She's, a pretty. If you who don't know Farrah Fawcett, is let me show you. She's a babe.. She was a babe gorgeous. Babe always will be a babe. Okay. So we're getting that volume starting about right here to just have it nice and sleek and gorgeous right in the front. And then all the other pieces. You can start that far down too, if you'd like, depending on how what you're wanting for your style or if you're, trying to grab more volume, you can always go and get more.. So I'm going to start a little higher up and then give this the good little twist. And because it doesn't matter that next one down as much as it matters in that front one.. So you can always see that I have my wand facing straight down. All the time, and then, let's make sure we get all these loose random hairs wrapped up in here and doing our thing. And then I'm going to go in and do the flat iron on this side clean up that loose hair always and then the same thing Goes for this side, even though I'm not using the wand, I'm going to go about that far down.. Even if I was ..., I always go that far down no matter what., So you can see that they give you two different type curls, but they're, both really cute and really pretty.. I would also like to know: what's your opinion, Why have you stuck to one thing versus another? Do you use both a hair wand and a straightener or flat iron? Do you use a curling iron? Why do you use a curling iron Which one have you chosen? Why do you use that one Or for someone who's watching this and you're, trying to figure out if a one is for you. Or maybe using a hair wand or using a flatter, is super hard for you and you're trying to figure that out too.? I would like to know what kind of audience we have watching this.. So in the comment, will you write that out what you are, because that's going to help me a ton too for the videos that I make and what I move ahead with more so doing too, with what kind of content people people are needing or looking for.? That'S going to help me a lot. And if you haven't subscribed to this amazing channel, then do so. You can find out. You can find on this page more about style. You can find about. I have a couple of workouts videos.. If you want to see more workup videos, let me know., I just didn't know what people we're digging hair videos and makeup. Saint makeup is my favorite.: It's in the US and Canada. It's a cream makeup and oh, my gosh. Is it so good? It makes your skin look like skin and it's just pure goodness. Okay., That's for another day, but I'll share some of those videos, too. So you'll see on this side. This is the flat iron side. And then you'll see on this side. This is the wand side.. So this one is just going to be a lot more of a rope wrap where this one's a flat wrap.. So the rope wraps you can't get on a flat iron side, but you can do a flat, wrap or a rope wrap on the curling wand side. Depending on how you hold it., So you can wrap it really flat.. I always start mine out more flat and then they turn into rope, wraps. Okay.. So the next thing I'm going to do is I'm actually going to. I don't have the hair product right here that I want, but I actually am going to go through and just break up the curls. I usually like to have a little bit of product on my hands just so that my hands aren't so dry.. So I'll put some of that posh on my hands.. Now I'm going to go through and just break up my curls and you can see when I do this. So I'll, just break these ones up and then I'll come over to this side and break these ones. Up., I never leave them in the curls.. I always break them up., So you can completely see a difference in the two with just how they're breaking up., Which side do you like, left or right? This is my right. This is my left. Curling wand is on this side and the flat iron is on this side and they're just totally different.. So it's just with based off of what you're kind of going for and you can see.. The other thing you can do, if you want, is to clean up these curls just a little bit more. Okay., So we just clean them up just a bit more.. So I take my brush at an angle and I just have those ends coming in to the hair instead of both. And there we go. All right. So there is the difference in the two between a wand and a flat iron.. Let me know which one is more for you and let me know what you're here for for what you like to see.. You can comment that below., You can always subscribe to this channel and you can always follow me on Facebook. That one is fitmissionmakeupwithjocelynmcclellan on Facebook and then on. staceyjane75: PROFESSIONAL STYLIST HERE: I think you did an excellent job at comparing/demonstrating the types of loose curls you do. I think your video is also entertaining! This was the very first video of yours that I've seen However, it is not safe for people to use heat that high. I don't even turn it up that high for my African American and Asian clients. If one feels the need to turn it up, they should use smaller sections instead. One must always to a test run - starting at 275° and turning each section up 15°-20° until the first time your section holds the curl. Work up to  350° if you have to - higher Temps should not be used. As for heat protection, you obviously used it, but you didn't discuss how important it is. It's so easy to melt hair with those heat settings, and the only way to fix melted hair is to cut above the damage. PRO TIP - If one notices their ends getting crinkly, and it requires them to increase the heat or exposure time for just those parts, then their ends are melted. Get them trimmed off ASAP, or the damage will keep moving up the strands, causing one to need a way bigger cut. You also said that hair can be "too protected" with soft products. That's not really true. You can use too many - or- incompatible products, but you can't have too much protection. I knew what you were trying to say, that only using soft products will likely leave the hair flat and limp - while adding hold will volumize and keep the style. The non-stylist people would likely hear that using protectants would make their hair too limp. Next time you discuss that, explain it like this: "Heat protection is necessary. It's like putting foil on a lasagna - we want it to cook, but we don't want the cheese to burn - so we cover it with foil. Often heat protectants are "soft hair" products and don't have much hold at all. In the L'ange collection, that would be Glass Hair and Posh. If I used one of these products, I would also use the Whip Mousse, Trois Chic, or Glazé Hair Lotion after the heat protectant, to add hold to my curls. If I wanted to have heat protectant and hold in one product, I would use Rival or Thermal Magique. If had hair where the curl always falls out, I would use one of those plus Trois Chic, Haute to Trot, Whip Mousse, or Grand Debut. All from roots to ends." I think you do a great job - and I can tell you wouldn't want to do a disservice to your subscribers - which is why I bothered to educate instead of shrugging and scrolling by.

Quentin Jude: I cannot even begin to tell you how many hair tutorials I’ve watched trying to curl my short hair with a flat iron!? I watched yours and I now know what I was doing wrong!? It’s so easy now! I cannot thank you enough!!

Ashley: New to short hair and I need tips! I am loving these flat iron curls, but I'm only good at it on one side so far thank you so much for breaking it down for me, girl!

Ellen Arbeznik: Prefer the flat iron side! My hair dresser taught me how to curl my hair with a flat iron (which I call a straightner, btw :)) and I've been doing it that way for years now, and love the result. Honestly, once you broke up the curls, the two sides were super similar. So this reinforced my decision not to invest in a curling wand :)

Kelly Meee: Great tutorial. I have watched dozens and this was by far the best. I use a curling iron and flat iron. I don’t have the flat iron down yet! I think my temp is too low, and I’m hoping After watching this I can do it!! Thank you

Katelin Marshall: Great video! I own a straightener and that’s how I straighten and also curl my hair. I’m trying to decide between a curling wand and curling iron, so that’s why I wanted to see what the wand side looked like. My hair is about the same length as yours currently-the longest it’s been in about 10 years! So just like you, I’m discovering new ways to style it because I’ve had short hair for so long and worn it down for so long. About a month ago, I started using sea salt spray while blow drying, a tip I learned from your channel, and I love the volume and smoothness it gives my hair!

Brenda G: Both sides are beautiful! I love curly hair. Never could get used to the straight look. Curling iron since I was a teen. Love the straightener side. I’ve used hot tools forever. Straightener is harder for me due to lack of practice. But hey, I still like to do my hair and I’m 54!!

stormet54: Very helpful! I've had no luck doing anything with a flat iron other than straightening my hair. Now that I've watched your technique for curling hair with a flat iron, I'm anxious to give it another go. You made it look easy. I think part of the problem was not turning the temp up high enough. I do ok with a wand but the final result is often not to my satisfaction with most of the curl being at the bottom with little curl or lift at the top. I also think I've been taking too large a chunk of hair as well as the temp being too low. Edit: I like the flat iron side better.

Susann Beck: Omg thank you so much I just have a brand new bob hair style after years of long hair … and needed to find a hair styling tool! Decided to go with the flat iron after watching this! So helpful thank you!

Anna L: I live for your tutorials!!! I’m more of a curling iron gal than I am a wand or straightener gal but your tutorials have helped me appreciate using the flat iron.

Heidi Huiss: I like them both. Just depends on my mood. The wand side is a little more fun and the flat iron side is a little more pretty

Antonia Rebelo: Hi Joceyln! Your video is perfect timing, because I have both curling wand and flat iron however after many attempts it never turns out therefore I was thinking of getting a wand instead as it looks to me, like it can be easier to achieve those beautiful waves. I am definately getting one now! Thank you!

Mary Wallbridge: Hi Jocelyn great video, I'm loving your hair longer it looks so nice , suits you very much but I also think you rock a shorter , I thought I always liked curls with a curling iron but I gotta say I actually prefer the side done with hair straightener to be honest both look very pretty but yeah definitely love the straightener side ,thanks for sharing all the best Mary in Australia

Melissa Pagniano: Great video as always! My hair is really baby fine and super thin. I found early on I was not good with a curling iron and I’ve always used a curling brush. After watching your videos I have purchased the flat iron and the five interchangeable curling iron/wand from L’ange. I find myself using the flat iron more currently but I am trying to learn the wand.

Healthy Second Half: I have so many tools and just bought a couple from L’ange through your link. I default to the flat iron, since it can do just about anything. Looking forward to trying the Le Duo Grande. Love your channel!!

Litzaztil: You make it look so easy I never get them right lol And after you broke the curls up to me they look pretty much the same Amazing hair , by the way I think the secret is the preparation I need to do that !!

Jana Spicer: Love the wand side! My hair is really short, and one side is shorter then the other side. So I just keep my hair straight all the time.

Maribeth Bown: Jocelyn, I love watching you. You are always so joyful. Thank you for the love that shines though on your You Tubes. I am a mature women and Brooke’s mother in law. You are wonderful and so encouraged when I watch your hair and make up.

Sorchabreaton: I really like the flat iron side. I'm watching this vid because i got a new haircut and want to start curling my hair for the first time. I am rubbish at using the flat iron to curl but I'm hoping to get better at it. You make it look so easy :)

Pamela Fiske: Great video. I don’t have a wand but I think I like the flat iron more so this was helpful.

Infinity Health Pilates: I use all of the different tools. But truthfully the curling iron is just easiest. I find it really hard to manage the flat iron on my “ tough side to curl” and in the back with my shorter bob it’s easier too. Thanks for your help trying to manage my stubborn fine hair

Tobi Robinson: I definitely love the wand look! But they’re both adorable though

Janine Boehm: Love the wand side! I can’t seem to get lasting curls with wand. Bought Le Duo because of you and it’s my all time favorite hair tool!,

Anne P Conley: I would love to use either, but I'm so bad at it that I usually use the Caruso steam curlers. Loved the tutorial❣️

Cyndi Portier: I typically use a curling iron rather than a flat iron. My hair does better with the curling iron. My hair is probably a smidge longer than yours right now. I agree, it’s a balance of more product versus too much product that determines how your hair holds the curl!

Naomi Jones: Hi from the UK Jocelyn I find it so difficult using a hair straightener to curl my hair. So I use a mixture of 2 tools. My hair is the exact same cut and length as yours. I use a 25mm curling wand and a 3 barrel 25mm curl waver. I alternate layers with each tool, the bottom and top layers always being the curling wand. It gives such a different look My only issue is that my hair drops its curl very quickly after just a few hours even when I use a hairspray on each layer. If you could kindly offer any advice on my hair holding it's curl, it would be very much appreciated. Thanks x

Rose Minick: I like both but I'm leaning toward the want even though it looks a bit harder to work with. The end result is a little bit more broken up and piecey. Thank you... you are fun and absolutely gorgeous!

Christine Mack: Hi, I use a straight iron, wand and curling iron. I just mastered the curling iron. Thank you and you have such beautiful hair!

Pam B: I like the wand side. I’m growing my hair out. It seems to just get bushy, without even trying to curl it. My granddaughter is coming to stay with me in a few weeks. And she’s going to show me how to use the flat iron. She’s been using one for years. I need all the help I can get. I have had very short pixie cut hair for the last thirty years. So it’s going to be interesting. If I can’t handle doing it myself, I know my hair looks good short also.

Lisa Humphreys: Wand side best!! More youthful and modern. Thank you loved the tutorial!

Rindi Malone: Always had long hair, learning how to curl it short!

cris walton: Left! I have a wand, the le duo, a flat iron and the le perle. The le perle is the only one that puts a lasting curl in my hair. My hair is fine and thin. I keep experimenting but usually pretty disappointed with my results.

Susan Fusuma: I thought for sure I would like the curling wand curls better, but when you separated the curls, I like the flat iron curls better! Do you use hairspray to hold the curls longer and do you have to touch up curls everyday or just let alone until you wash your hair? I would love to see more hair tutorials on different hairstyles now that you have medium length hair like mine.

Jessica Rouby: You have a ton of hair! I gave very fine very thin hair. It is hard to curl my fragile hair and find products that don't add dryness. Lange has typically dried out my hair.

Leanne Caporrella: I have always used a wand until I got my hair cut short recently. So I have just started trying to curl with a flat iron and I am so bad at it! It's so hard

Anne Donker: I am pro flat iron. I got one for christmas. And still mustering up the courage to use it! So thanks for this

Stacey Ross: I prefer wand side. Thank you for this video, you are great and I love your humour!

Kristine Bates: My hair is very similar to yours and really does not hold a curl. I've tried a few hairdressers and it just frizzes and falls out. I think some of things you mentioned really make sense as far as products ect. I just purchased the flat iron (the one I have been using is ceramic plated and not that great anyways) and the products you mentioned to give it a shot and see if it works for me. My question is in the video is your hair already flat ironed or is your hair naturally that straight? Also if it is already flat ironed that are you doing this a few days later or same day? I am just wondering if the the flat iron is strong enough to curl hair that has already been set straight.

ildiko: I like the neatness of the wand on your left side. Keep your hair longer - it looks more sophisticated.

Helen Chapman: I like the flat iron look. I find it easier to use a curling iron.

Jooles Leder: Wowzer Jocelyn such a valuable and amazing video - thank you

Lisa Galloway: I like using the Duo from L’ange because it does the work for me however I’m a bit interested in investing on the curling wand but my hair is shorter than yours but I really like the curl it gives real funky like it a lot.

X Tracey 1983 X: I’m a newbie to short hair bob style and never have used any heat tools for my hair, I’m just a wash and go kinda girl. So it would be so good to see any basic hair style also what products are great too use but I will say that I’m in the UK so tools and products will be different here.

hdb80: I did hair for 16 years and I cannot make my hair look this good lol.

Ann Söderberg: I use both, but my wand is coned... but my hair never gets the end look - you know..the effortless beach wave curl... I also have fine Swedish hair. It is a lot harder to get all good products here, good for me that U.S opening up for travel again. Love your channel and vids.. I am 51, but feel like 31 and just want to look chic, but also casual. xoxo

Lesley Pyke Glass Engraver: we call them "tongs" My hair is same length and I lie back on the bed and French plait it, it's lovely!

ren gon: I use a flat iron because I feel like I have more control of the curl. I do love my wand but I gravitate towards my trusty flat iron.

Lisa: I love your hair color and length!!❤️

woolly sheep: The flat iron side looks better. It's funny because I just bought a wand and for me it's hard to use and execute without burning myself. Thanks for the tutorial.

Cher Bear: Love the curling wand side.

Rebecca Stephens: I figured out curling my super long hair with a flat iron. My hair is so frizzy curly so if I use a regular curling iron the roots are frizzy... I needed to straighten the roots and curl at the same time. My hair is short now and I don't like the flat iron curls... I'm trying to figure out the wand.

Jessica Smith: Hello sweet beautiful friend! Your hair is always so cute. You make me so jealous lol. I use a flat iron on the top of mine. With the back and sides clippered no need. I've tried growing it out but get frustrated and cut it off. Thank you for sharing your videos.

Priscilla Sifuentes: i prefer the curling iron right now because i like a bit less volume for my thick Mexican hair. the larger wand gives me too much volume for me

Catherine Cookson: 25.4 mm = 1 inch. Her curling iron is almost 1 inch at 25 mm. Hope this helps someone.

awissbaum: Your hair looks so healthy. I have used both the wand and the flat iron but not as often as I would like because my hair is not as healthy as yours. Can you suggest some products that I can use to get my hair in better condition? My hair is a little shorter than yours and I have a little problem with breakage. My hair is fine and thin.

Shirlyn’s Sleeve: The opposite of aging is death so rock your age no matter the number. Thin fine gray hair & best thing for my hair is all natural products & a great cut. Heat on gray can cause discoloration.

Youngju Anderson: I'm like the only person I know that has bought a straightener so have the versatility of a straightening n curling my hair. My hairdresser suggested a straightener over a wand. I tried straightening my hairs years ago with an old straightener and it made my hair sooooo dry and frizzy. I'm such a newbie to hairstyling!
