Hey, what's up guys welcome to my youtube channel in today's video we're gon na be talking about how to add dimension to a balayage how to touch-up apologize and how to do a root touch-up all in one process, so stay tuned. You know I'm really excited to dive in, because this is something that I get asked a lot, and I know it can be sometimes a little confusing on how to add in lowlights how to do a balayage or a balayage touch-up with a root touch-up. How do I do it with a root color, and so today we're gon na be diving into that specifically and make it really easy, because all of that stuff can be done in one step in one process it doesn't need to be done individually, and this is Actually gon na save you tons and tons of time, so, let's dive in alright. So this is our before you guys can see. It'S just been a little while, since she's had her color done and we're gon na be kind of working with her natural color, but we're definitely gon na add in a lot more contrast, brighten up her blonds and actually adding some depth in there too. So I'm really excited to do this, because I think that this is gon na look so fun and just give her hair color just a little bit more pop alright. So I'm gon na clean up her face and we're also gon na use that kind of as her low-light so I'll show you guys exactly how we're gon na do that in the technique, but I'm gon na actually be using gold well color on sand. I love using this color line because it doesn't shift the natural base, it's a Dem eyeline and it just deposits, but it doesn't over deposit. So I personally love using this specific line for this technique, because they don't have to stress about it if it sits on too long or anything like that. So we're actually gon na be mixing up six and with just a little splash of 7g, and I'm excited for you guys to see exactly how we incorporate this in and then for her Lightner we're gon na be mixing up 25 volumes all right. So what I did was I kept her natural part and then I went through and just sectioned out the front from the back, and I always like to work in the back quadrant, especially when we're doing this type of technique. Now I'm going to do one more thing where I'm just going to kind of separate out this top section from the bottom and the reason. Why is we're gon na be applying her base color and we're gon na be using that as our low-light? And so I just like to keep it a little bit separated so that we don't have different things going on. We don't have like it doesn't get all messy, because this technique can definitely get messy and you guys will notice. I am where you gloves for this. So what I'm gon na do is I'm going to start applying her Brut color that we mixed up that root little light and I'm just gon na apply it all the way through her roots through this section and then I'll show you guys what we're gon na Do okay, so what we're gon na do is we're going to take a diagonal back section now, her hair is pretty short and we are gon na cut it off just a little bit. So I'm not too worried about getting a lot of these like baby hairs or that lower angle, but I do want to make sure that there is some brightness to when she wears her hair. She does see it that she has some lightness in there, so I'm gon na clip up the rest of this section and again you guys can see, because I'm doing this in kind of quadrants it keeps it a lot cleaner than if I was doing it a Different way so we'll comb this through and I'm just gon na kind of do a weave here and it's okay. If some of these baby hairs fall out, like I said this length down here - I'm not too concerned about it more so worried about our canvas right here. So what I'm gon na do is I'm going to take my comb and I'm just gon na kind of I'm gon na grab a less, so this is gon na be a wide toothed comb, but I'm actually gon na grab a not wide toothed comb. My brain could not think of the word right now found one. This would be a fine-tooth comb, not a wide toothed comb. Now I could remember it anyway, okay, so we're moving on I'm going to tease this here and the reason why I switched out my comb was because I want to make sure that when we tease her hair she's got this fine, stick straight hair that when we Actually, tease it we're actually pushing the hair up verses, a wide toothed comb just wouldn't get that result, so we're gon na just kind of tease it in there a little bit and then I'm gon na grab my foil. I want to be doing a ton of tunnel lightness down here, but we are going to be doing just a bit and so I'm going to use my root color that I dragged down and I'm just gon na kind of apply it there. Now the cool thing about this is you guys have watched any of my other quail iaj technique, videos. This would be acting as my blending agent of you guys, we've seen the other ones. I use a different thing for that, but this is for using the root. Color that we already have so I'm gon na kind of pick up this piece right here. Cuz your knee has some lightness and there we don't want to over, like that. But I'm gon na go in with my Lightner and just apply it down here and then we're gon na kind of blend it in to that root, color or aka our blending agent. So the cool thing about this is, is it's saving time and I'm not having to go back and with the blending agent we're doing it all at once? I know a lot of times when people are darkening the base or, for instance, maybe covering gray. They go in, they cover the gray and then they rinse it out after they processed it blah blah blah, and then they go back in and do poorly on pieces. So this would actually save you so so much time without having to do that extra step and then I'm going to take a clean dry brush and what I'd like to do is just kind of blur that line. So I wipe it off in between and you guys can see, I'm just kind of blurring that out just a tiny, tiny bit. You do have to be a little bit careful when you are doing a root color into this, because it can sometimes get a little bit. Spotty err. So then, we're just gon na apply that foil, we're gon na fold it up, and I would just like to lock it into place right here. I'M going to do the same thing on the other side, give another diagonal back piece and continue from there. Okay. So now I have my two diagonal back pieces and now what I'm going to do is I'm gon na do a straight across piece here. You guys are gon na see it's a pretty big triangle section and so we'll clip this little guy up and what I'm going to do is I'm going to weave out our coil each piece or our light piece you can see she doesn't have salutely any lightness Down here, but I'm gon na put this up out of the way, because I want this to not be a low light now, the cool thing is because we're segmenting our foliage pieces. I don't have to take this a little light and put it in a foil. Could I absolutely but because she's got short hair and we've got her covered with a towel? I'M just gon na apply the low light formula. The same root color just right here and it just saves me so much time so I applied it in and then I just writ wash off my hands. You know on a towel and then go right in for my foliage piece. So it really saves you a lot of time. You don't at an extra foil, and I just really like that. So that's another reason why I love doing this technique or somebody that wants a transformation like this okay, so we're grabbing our foil will apply just a little bit more root color. Sometimes you don't have to reapply if there's enough like liquid up there, but for this one I wanted to and then I'm just going to go in. I find my foiling osh and just continue up alright. So this is my last little section here and I'm actually just going to apply a low-light for this section. So once I've done with this little bottom section we're going to move up and just continue up the head go into this next little quadrant. Okay. So we finished applying it to this little quadrant just at the root and I'm gon na do another diagonal back, and this is gon na be another boiling ash piece. We'Ll do another thing on the other side, oily Hadj and you guys will notice that. Sometimes, when I am doing colors like this, the hair that I leave out in between this voyage, I might add it as a low light, but because she's got a little bit of warmth in there a little bit of lightness, she actually likes the warmth and so We'Re gon na utilize that with this piece, so I'm not gon na cover up this piece with a low light. That'S why adding in low lights down here and kind of popping them throughout kind of really works for this technique and makes it just look really good. So we're getting a lot of different colors, almost three different colors in there now. One thing I will mention you guys can see when I tease that there was a lot of dry hair up here that didn't have the color through it. So what I'm gon na do is I'm going to squish it in there and make sure that we get all of that color all the way through that section. Another reason why I like using gold Wells colorants is because it actually is pretty liquid and gets through there pretty good versus like a permanent color. You do have to squish it in there just a bit more, it's not all going with our Lightner and again, I'm not overly lightening. These ends. That kind of have some lightness already, I'm not like squishing it in there just kind of barely dragging that through and then blending it up into this piece now. One thing that I will mention is you guys can see. We teased it on here and now we're gon na blend it into this area. One thing you don't want to do is you do not want to start blending up into this teased area, because that's gon na create spot enos so making sure that when you are blending it you're blending it on what I would call a clean surface down here. Not the teased area, so I'm getting pretty close here. Obviously this is a technique. I do all the time I feel very confident with it, but if it's something new for you guys be just very aware when you're kind of cheesiness or blending into that teased area that you're - not you, know, squishing it in there, because I would hate for you To have a bunch of Leaburg all right, so what I decided to do was just a couple to agonal back and then straight across diagonal back kind of that V, section very similar to the way that I do all my other foliage videos so again definitely make Sure to go check those out so now, we've gotten to this little top triangle section here and what I'm going to do is I'm actually just going to kind of blend that in we're going to weave this piece out here on the top, so I'm actually going To weave one and I'm going to do a thicker weave right here, I'm going to leave this out I'm gon na. Let this just remain as kind of natural I'm gon na. Have this feel low, like I am I'm gon na put this one in a foil. Just because we have some natural hair next to it, so we'll pop this guy in as our low light again just to get that contrast and again, this one's gon na be right up against that point, Leo he's kind of right in between it and that's why? I did it a little bit chunkier, I know sometimes that might freak you out as a little light thinking. That'S gon na be really chunky or like the 90s look. It'S definitely not it's just gon na add that contrast, if that Shane really wants okay. So then, this is gon na, be our last voyage piece right here in the back section, I'm going to start my teasing from down here, and one thing I will mention is you guys can see this comb could give a little like messy. So you might want to kind of brush it off in between I'm doing this because nothing's worse than getting a bunch of like dark color down there, so just again, being very aware of keeping your sections clean and everything really clean. Okay, so we've teased it! It'S going to grab my foil place it down right there, I'm going to reset rate that root area that teased area, just like I showed you and then go in with our foliage, hold the corners down and lock it into place. And if you guys were wondering I did switch to these kind of fun foils, just because I was like you know what let's have a little fun with it. These are a little bit cleaner and actually grip a little bit better. So I liked using them. These are from frame R than they're ethereal foils and actually have them linked in my Amazon affiliates. So you guys can click the link in the description box below it'll. Take you to my Amazon favorites and you guys can check out these files there too. Alright. So I went through and applied the root color to both quadrants of the front. I just decided to go for it because she doesn't have a lot of hair on this site because she does partner hair further over. So just thought, it'd be easier. So what I am gon na do is I'm going to kind of part her hair just a little bit further over and we're gon na kind of do just a piece in the front as kind of her money piece. So her line does kind of dip down right here. So that's just something to really keep in mind with your clients. We don't want her money piece to be super solid, but we do want to have a little bit of pop of something there. So it's basically at the widest point about an inch wide, but then it's the smallest point. It is about like a half inch, so I'm going to just go in and we're gon na do my money piece just like I do for all my other oily edge videos, but the cool thing is because we already have her root color applied. We don't have to do a blending agent so again, saving this time and just keeping it as clean as possible. So I'm gon na drive this down just a little bit more and I'm gon na lift it off of her face just because there is color underneath this foil and I don't want to switch it on her face. We probably will have to clean her up a little bit here after this, but we'll just apply her and whitener and then go up and blend it into that blending agent / root color and I'm only gon na fold. This one corner because you guys can see. I do have a little bit of lightness right in here and I don't want to squish it on to that color. So we'll just leave it there light would put a foil down here just to keep it clean again. This can get really really messy so trying to keep it as clean as possible. Again, you guys are going to see it's getting under forehead a little bit, but we're going to work quickly and it'll be okay, because we'll clean it up off of her we'll leave that section out and I'm going to do two more oily edge pieces. So I finished those pieces and before I lay her foil down, I always would check to make sure you get thought that I went through and kind of cleaned it up there, just making sure that we don't have like a ton of color laying down there, and I did use a free card cream from Wella - that's one of my favorite ones to use because it definitely helps with that issue. All right, we're gon na fold, these foils down making sure to leave these little hairs out here and then we're gon na go on to the sides. Okay. So now I started on the side and again this is just very similar to what I do for my oily eyes. I really like this piece around the face because it gives that beautiful brightness when the client wears their hair back, so I'm going in just how I traditionally you do again if you guys want to see more of that watch one of my other foliage videos we're Just going in gon na blend it up and then right behind it, we're actually gon na do a low-light to get that contrast in there. So again, if you're backing up a highlight with a deeper low-light, you're gon na see that contrast versus just kind of blending it all in there so again for this look, that's what we're going for, and I think it's gon na look good for the next section. I sectioned out our leave that piece out here. This is going to be our highlight and then this is going to be a little light. I'M going to put this one in a foil just because there are some lighter pieces around it, and I don't want them to get touched but again low light here and then highlight right behind it again, all right. So now that we've pulled out all her foils one of the things that can sometimes happen whenever you have a root color going on, it can start to stain at the scalp. So what I like to do is I like to actually get my hands wet with my gloves on and then I go in, and I just kind of massage out this color now again with the Goldbach color on. So it's not gon na stain nearly as bad as a permanent color, but I do like to just kind of massage this in and really use that color to start to lift it out of the skin and every time. I do this because I use that. Well, a pre guard, and then I need to do this technique. My clients very rarely stain, even the clients that stain really badly. So this works really well and I definitely recommend trying it out, especially when you guys are using that permanent color, alright. So for her toner, I'm mixing up 90 and 9n with clear, so I'm gon na do half an ounce of these two together, so that'll be one ounce total, so 1/2 ounce, half ounce and then one ounce of our crystal clear and then two ounces of developer. Good is he go, let's keep it fun all right, and here is our final look. I love our turn now. It'S nothing crazy. It'S not like to contrast that they know. Sometimes it can look a little scary when those low lights or that bass is processing. You guys can just see how, like the caramel tones, really kind of hit off the lighter pieces and everything just looks so blended, very fun and a lot more pops of color. Alright guys. I did this today on my friend but her roots came out a little orange because I didn’t saturate it enough because I was focused about the blend more I guess. The only difference I did was did highlights on the Mohawk. Still with a base color and that’s where the roots look a little orange. Any tips or or to fix it?? I appreciate it!

Miranda Rodriguez: Beautiful! Great info ! Can’t wait to try this

Karen Kennedy: Thank you for explaining every step and not just racing through. Xxx

Fuzzy Friends Rescue Volunteer: This is a great video! I have a stylist question. Whenever I visit a salon, regardless of hair length, I'm always up-charged which makes me scared to see a stylist anymore. If my hair is a bob I'm charged for "extra thick hair." If it's below my neckline I'm charged for "extra length." Or, if not charged for length I'm told I require a color correction (I don't have box color, henna or banding) so I don't understand why a correction is needed. (Normally I ask for base color touch up and highlight touch up and a trim.) So since I'm already there I have the service done but because of the up-charging I try another place next time at which time I'm given the exact same story "you need the following / we need to charge $200-300 extra for...." I went to cosmetology school a long time ago but still, I'd prefer a salon visit. Do you have any advice on how to NOT be up-charged like that (I promise my hair TRULY isn't extraordinarily difficult to work with) because I'm so tired of $450 salon visits that seem to cost other people with the same hair around $150-200. Could there be something wrong with my hair that I'm not aware of?

Magda Winska: I absolutely love your videos help me sooo much !! I only started to learn hairdressing and Ive seen lots of online training from my home country and everything its all pay for. Hardly anyone is sharing ther knowledge for free. Thank you so much for those tips and vides and all the tips! You make people's life so much easier especially when they are at the beginning of their hairdressing adventure! I'm your huge fan

Sarah Woodward: Girl! Yes ma’am! You are impressive, and I don’t say that too often

A: Wow, so helpful and beautiful outcome! Will def be using your technique! Thank you. & thank you for using Goldwell I prefer it as well!

I Abram: Fabulous tutorial!

Tlm T: Hi there Jamie. I wanted to ask, because I have had an issue before when doing this technique where the root color applied will fall into the blonde hilighted pieces when rinsing the hair and grabbing some blonde and getting darker than I want on the blonde pieces. How do you avoid that? thank you for your advice :)

Courtney Creations: Love your videos! I’ve tried this technique and the results were beautiful. Where can I get one of these denim aprons?

Addison: So talented! And such a good teacher

Ashnita Krishna: I love ur videos.. u are such a help to us hairdresser's... keep on making video for us lol ❤❤❤❤❤❤

LauraKat87: But doesn’t the colorance process 25 minutes then done, won’t the color in your bowl be ineffective by the time you get to the front?

The Zen Room & Studio: another awesome video :) love how her money piece turned out!

Kelly Klonowski: I feel like whenever I try to blend my lightener into wet color it makes just an ugly orange tone... or when I try to highlight over wet color... it's super brassy. Any tips for that?! Thanks for this video!!

Ruchira Kambli: Love it . Got to learn alot. Will surely implement it

Kasia S: I love your technique and want to use it asap. However would semi permanent work if used on grey hair though?

Briana Paulina: I always learn so much from you! Xo

Joanne Baik: Always love your videos ❤️

Khemestre: Nice technique!

Silver Mont: I treat this services as colour correction! Tell me girl, how long does this Take to apply ? For me it may take me 45 to one hr app. Also depends on texture /density and length of H. In the end if you are doing all of that including cut/ restorative treatments too. It’s about 3hrs service $300+

zee 🕷🥀: Ooh i'm gonna try this on my client today. thanks

Shar Roon: Aveda makes a balm that you can rub on the hair line. It really feels nice.

Purple Peggy: I just had a thought about taking this video to the salon. However, some stylists would be offended. so It's a good idea to meet with & have a detailed consult with the person you may intend to do your hair. I doesn't take a rocket scientist to know pretty quickly if the colorist they're consulting with is cocky, know it all, or if they are genuinely interested in what YOU want & will go above n beyond to get tgere. i hope this is making sense. I certainly am not meaning anything negative. I been waiting for YEARS to have my hi lights done becuz,I do not have a stylist. I have worked long & hard to get my hair so healthy, shiny, soft & I NEED some dimension, face framing ( money pc) light blonde hi lights on my 100% virgin all natural DARK dishwater blonde/LIGHT dishwater brown hair. I am frozen with fear. I wish I had access to JD. wow, this is emotional. seriously. I really need to find someone.

Jay-R Avaricio: i'm a stylist too i lovely like your work thanks for you sharing

Elizabeth Brown: Where did you get the glass bowl that you have in your videos lol I know it's a word question but I'm obsessed with it!

Felicity Woods: thanks so much for sharing your knowledge!

Faceby.Bianca: Can you apply this technique with permanent color as root color?

Glitterethot: I really love your color line the one where you push the ball over the top of the canister what line is that

Educator Mikey: How many ml did you use for your base color?

Lori Bell: I’m going to try this

Lizabelle Hiraldo: I loved!

Solana Weaver: How far apart were your sections in the front?

Sasha Gomez: how long did the service take?

BrendaC Vlogs: Can you make a video to explain a little how to work with toners, and why you use the toners you use , like how to decide what colors go with what. If I make an sinse . I love all you're videos and work!!

Hayley Simpson: What foils are those that Jamie is using in this video?

Sue S.: What would you recommend for a similar result on a ash blonde going 50% grey that wants to cover it?

Elizabet De La Torre: You’re amazing!!!

krystal Allan: how much time would you book out for application

Hannah Green: What exactly does the teasing at the root help with?

Briar Rose: Beautiful

Lisa Gransbery: Beautiful

Leslie Olsson: Did she mix the Olaplaex with the lightener?! I’ve never seen my stylist do that! Or was it just something Olaplex brand?

Carmen Latham: Can I do this same technique with 20 vol on the base for grey coverage?

Kenzie Rowland: How do you prevent bleeds when taking out the foils with the lowlight as well. Especially with reds!!! When I do a highlight and then a red low light but when I get them to the sink the red bleeds on to the highlighted hair

Rose: Wow you get a good mix with goldwell with just a spoon. I’ve only seen it mixed with one of those shakers

Savannah: Love your videos! Where did you get your apron from?!!

Face by Kay: Please make a video on formulating color and different brands!!!

Annie Rioux: It’s beautiful

Emily Vermillion: I wish I could get your opinion on something. I watch your videos all the time and think you could help me. Im in school now and have a BIG COLOR project to do Sunday

ikloy Vlog: I wish you can teach me personally

Camee Thomason: Loved.

joyce2125: Do you have video on reversed bayalage? I have a client coming in wanting a look that I think is a color melt. She is all over platinum with some regrowth of her natural. TIA

Emma Goulter: I wish you were in my ear every time i colour hair , your like my fairy "colour" mother

Xyz: Love !!

Chrystina Mcconnell: So question So I'm understanding completely.... If your not doing a lowlight is it back to back highlight on the side of the head?

Y Y: Will you ever make some classes? Would love to attend one
