When looking at hair under the microscope we are mostly looking at the outside. The inside of the hair strand, the part that is stretchy, where there's pigment is the cortex.

The outside of the strand is the cuticle. These are translucent, hard, overlapping layers. That is what we are looking at today.

Hello, i'm cosmo dad welcome back today is microscope day a while back. I did some hair under a microscope and asked for some requests of what kind of hair other people would like to see under the microscope, and i have a couple of those requests today. We'Re going to see some different textures, so different colors. I have four types of hair for you. Today i have some natural gray hair, some naturally blonde hair. I also have some highly textured what could be called 4b or 4c hair very tight curls, and then i also have some chemically relaxed hair. It'S been relaxed with a potassium hydroxide relaxer. I'Ve got with me my microscope with a camera attached. Now it can be difficult to get visuals of hair under a microscope, because it's the depth of field is so shallow. The focus is very hard to catch, but i'm going to try something i haven't tried before and maybe do a video recording of me focusing through this camera, real quick before we get into this. I really appreciate you stopping by and uh share with your friends all right now. We'Re really gon na do this come with me all right, so you can see. I'Ve got a strand. Oh there's, some more strands. Let'S go back, let's go for this one right here and, let's see if we can nail that focus, that's gon na be about as good as we get. You can see way over there on the edge of the screen. Some cuticle that's been uh compromised. Let'S see if i can slide that slide over one of my little dials here, i'm gon na see if i can snap some pictures too at this point, i'm going to shut the recording off and i'm going to try to focus in with a picture because, with A picture i can then edit for contrast and maybe see a little bit better, all right, i'm going to move the slide around a little bit and see. If maybe i can't catch a piece of hair. That'S a little easier to see. Here'S a good one! So do do as usual. This leaves me wondering what i could maybe accomplish with um with some slightly better equipment, but in the meantime that was pretty fun for me. I hope you enjoyed looking at those four different hair samples under the microscope. Uh, just a little bit of uh fun for today and i'll see you next time.

SJG 90: Can you compare different coloured hair (natural colour) please?

Nilu Nasir: Wow! Got to see something new! But what about chemically treated straightening hair? How can i check how much water my hair is absorbing after hair straightening or dyeing hair?. Is there any way to know about it?

Blue Bird: I've been seeing people use baking soda and 3% peroxide to bleach their hair. Baking soda is pretty abrasive, so I wonder if it does the same level of damage to the cuticle as lightener does

AmoreEBella Tarot: Thank you and BLESSINGS

pimpmyride: Any tips on which microscopes to buy? I’d like to see this in person and also try some chemicals in the Petri dish.
