ABOUT ME

Hi, I’m Katie! I live in Los Angeles, where I ditched the dye in 2018 after many years of dithering. Shortly after starting my transition, I founded KatieGoesPlatinum.com to help other women joyfully & confidently ditch the dye and rock their natural gray hair at every stage and at any age.

Please note that all of my videos are for entertainment purposes only. I share my own opinions, my personal experiences, and other information to help women with their gray hair. I hope you find it useful - if you do, please like & subscribe.

Hello, its Katie from Katie goes platinum and I dressed kylekhan today and I dressed my dog like a nut too, because it has been exactly one year since I gave up the dye and embraced my silver hair, and I just wanted to celebrate a little. So we got our silver hair. Apollo'S got his silver hair he's got a silver doggie jacket looks like a little spaceman. I'Ve got a silver shirt, some silver leggings which are completely insane, but I like them and silver nail polish from Essie I'll, put a link to that below because I love it and silver toes see feckin. I don't know how in the world, I'm gon na maneuver to show you these but they're from OPI. So I went a little crazy, because gray hair is always something that people try to hide they freak out about because it feels like you're going old or it could be that you're letting yourself go is what our culture's led us to believe, and I think we Should celebrate it um? I don't know how what it felt like that was in my 20s and started getting a lot of gray hair, but I definitely come to it now and for me, this whole year of embracing my gray, hair has been just one of transformation. Um I was going through kind of a rough time. It'S not even kind of up write about it. On my blog, but a few years ago, our son got very ill and almost died, and it was terrifying and if you've ever been through a traumatic event, like that, you know how it has a long-lasting effect on you. My son is okay now, but it took probably two years for me to stop kind of walking around. Like a zombie, I mean the fact that my son could have died. I feel so lucky that he didn't, but the fact that he could have - and he was just at home when it happened and it was a mystery illness. That'S never been fully explained. But the fact that that could happen threw me into a tailspin and also probably the first two years I walked around. Like I said, like a zombie, I have trouble focusing he was in kind of with. I guess they call a state of brain fog where you can't get regular tasks done, because your brain so traumatized, but what you've just been through. I didn't really realize what it was until after it was over, but but after I got out of that, I obviously had a lot of appreciation for how fragile life is and how lucky we all are to be alive and to be healthy and and best of All in the same time, I decided to stop dyeing my hair, because what was he trying to hide anymore, there's more important things in life to worry about than hair, even though I've got a whole blog about it. Obviously, I care about it, but um just to be here on this earth is a gift, and if that means we're gon na be getting a little older and showing some grays then so, be it obviously it's more complicated than that. I'M still kind of thinking uh delete, but that is some of what made a big difference to me is to stop caring about what people think and worry more about what I want to be, which was. I was sick of wasting all that time in a salon. Chair, I was tired of spending all the money. I was tired of pouring chemicals on my head trying to hide the fact that I was getting older, although I don't even know why it signifies being older since I've been going grey since I was 16 and I've met women who started going grey when there was Young as seven so but in our culture and mostly around the world, people feel like it's a sign of getting old and lost fertility and everything else, but I don't know now. All I see on my hair is beautiful, silver tinsel and I'm excited about it. So um anyway, I don't know what else to tell you, except that I'm glad I did it. I wish I hadn't waited so long. I haven't found my grey hair to be any more difficult to manage than my regular hair, not the world's best hairstylist, but I can get by with a blow-dryer. Just fine and my gray hair is exactly the same texture but better than the hair I had before. It'S more like it was before I started dyeing it, which is smooth and silky and shiny for a long time there I had to dye it every four weeks, not just to color the Grays, but also because within the second half of the month, my hair would Start to get dry and frizzy, and I thought that was because it's my natural hair texture, but now I think all those years of dyeing had really dried it out and I needed to dye it again to coat. I mean, I don't know anything about science, but to coat the follicles. I mean I'm terrible at science, but anyway to coat everything again and then it just seems silly. It'S like, I was just chasing the perfect hair texture and spending a lot of money to have hair that really only look good, maybe a week or two at the most out of every four weeks. And now it's coming right out of my head shiny and silky, and I love it. If I had to do it over again, I still would do cold turkey girl, which means not doing any processes, because my hair was so darn dark and it can be damaging to do a lot of the processes that people use to strip the color out or Highlight and low-light your hair, I didn't want to go through all that, and I'm glad I didn't just for me personally, because my hair texture is so nice now. I think it would have set the texture back a lot other thoughts I feel younger than I did when I was colouring it because I feel like it's really brightened up my complexion. It'S also kinda forced me to think more about the clothes I wear and the makeup I wear because you know I do have to admit that when I don't wear makeup or colorful clothes, I can get really washed out with the with the gray hair and even Before I went grey, I just think it's from being older. My color has changed a little and I've always been a pale person, but the the fun part is. I like experimenting with makeup. He didn't like makeup, you don't have to do it, but for me I, like makeup colors, I like bright lipsticks, so all that's been fun. I like experimenting with new clothes, even though this shirt is way too tight for me at this age, and that because I feel like I'm trying to look young, I just mean I gained some point in this past year and don't like feeling like I'm stuffed in A sausage casing, but we'll see what I can do about that um anyway. I'Ve got nothing but good things to say about it. It'S been fun. I haven't had a lot of negative reactions and I've gotten to start this amazing blog all about gray hair, where I've met a million different women who have fun stories. To tell that I share on there. I'Ve made some really good friends online and the silver hair Facebook groups and on Instagram - and I don't know it's just instead of feeling like I was reaching the I don't know - I don't see the end of my life because I'm only 51 for gosh sakes, but Instead of feeling like I was just reaching like the blob period of my life, I feel like I'm having fun again and trying something new and feeling a little rebellious, which is always a good feeling, and I've got nothing but good things to say about it. So, if you're thinking about going grey, I urge you to consider it it's very transformative and not just for me, but for other women. I'Ve I've talked to about it. If you don't feel like it's the right time, then don't do it. It'S really something that you need to feel that you want to do because, let's face it, it's not easy going grey. Even if you get a process down it still takes months, I mean you can't just unless you've never dyed your hair, you're gon na have to do something whether that means growing it out, like I did for a year, and I'm probably taking me another six to Nine months to get to the end, if I don't want to cut my hair, which I don't um and even if you do the processes like gray blending, it could be a few months to get your hair to the you know, lighter color that you want to Be and you'll probably have to do some cutting um, so I'm happy with this route I took if I was braver. I could kind of see some of these. Ladies who do the buzz cut. I think it's kind of fun looking and you definitely have your gray-haired transition done all at once, but I wasn't brave enough to go gray and short all it was that's just not my style. I can't take that fast rate of change, so I've decided to go the long route anyway, products, I'm using the same products. I'Ve been using throughout the transition. I used a clarifying shampoo once a week to to get rid of the product build-up, but also to fade the dye, and that seems to have really helped. It is drying, so I use a deep conditioner afterwards I'll list all of these products down below. If you're interested, I was using blue shampoo once a week to help with the orange ends, but I feel like my orange ends now are so orange that not much is helping with that. I have tried a few different experiments with different products and nothing was helping right now. I heard about a product that might help I'll try one more thing and I'll probably give it one. I'M worrying about the orange I'm almost fully transitioned in the back is still half way, underneath it's more black, just interesting, but the top. As you can see it's pretty silver orange C C orange I hold it up. You can really see that is not quite right. On down the lines but chestnut I don't know whatever it is, I don't mind the cranberry look, but it will be kind of nice to have some that go away. So that's all I have to say for today my little power power says goodbye. He is ready for me to take him out of this silly jacket. It even comes with a pocket, but I don't know what a dog is supposed to put in here always helpful. So far, though, maybe he would carry his carrots around with them in there because he's caring still chew on me. So that's my 1 year, video and I'll be doing more. I'M also going to be putting up a shopping video soon, I'm a terrible shopper, but I took a little excursion tried some new colors on to see what would go well with the grey I'll be posting that soon and please subscribe. Let'S go subscribe to me on youtube: you can click the little bell below and get notifications. When I have a new video, I try to do them once a week, but it's hard so at least two to three times a month was my goal and I definitely post on my blog every week, and you can also find me at the social revolution. Facebook group I'd love to see you on there. My pal Joanie founded it and it's an awesome group and Oh before I go and most forgot to say one thing: my friend Shelly Cavanaugh is a jewelry designer who's awesome and she designed these amazing earrings. Can you see that there's snakes serpents and I thought that was so epic ho, because this year's felt so transformative and, as you know, snakes shed their skins and she sent them to me as a way to celebrate this one year transition. So you get a chance. Please check out her Instagram I'll have that linked as well below she does awesome, jewelry and she's an all-around great person. It could've gone through all this without the help and support of my friends online and my friends in real life. Having a network of ladies that you can relate to and who are nice to you and you're nice back to it's one of the great blessings in life so have a great time until next time and I'll see you here, don't forget to subscribe thanks, say bye!

Linda George: Enjoyed this Katie! I'm at the end of my third month now of growing out my beautiful greys cold turkey. I now live on an island and they have NO color here for my ethnicity, so it has made it a bit easier because I have no other choice! Thank you for sharing your very personal story. The support from other women going through this is so helpful. It's funny how when you are ready to just "do it" by growing out your grey, you know!

Pepita Underthesun: (Yupelo here) Words of wisdom right there. So happy it turned out well for your son, I dread anything happening to my kids. I love the nail polish the most, I'm thinking combined with a dip matching the coloured ends of your hair would be amazing! Apollo should have his own blog! x

LiveLoveHula: Beautiful! Thank you for the update. Been thinking about you. Love your approach to transitioning. Helped me feel proud of my grow out. Love the lipstick!!!

V. 1954: I'm playing catch-up with your older videos. First, I am so happy your son is fine. Sometimes, it takes trauma to shake us up and make important changes. I had wanted to go gray for a while but when the lockdowns happened, it was my time. During quarantine, I did lose a family member to the virus and all the talk about salons seemed so trivial. I am very happy with my decision and embracing life very differently. Thanks again.

Carolyn Stockton: I love your adorable dog. Congratulations, I went about 4 months but had very little grey and it looked dull, back to coloring but wish I didn’t have to do it.

Mysticgardengirl: You are going to look so beautiful with your silver hair!

Jeana Willming: Hi. I'm turning 70 in November & decided to go grey ( white seems more accurate) 2 months ago. I was a brunette but the dye has colored my hair to a medium blond over the last few years.

Lozzer 66: Yayyyyy....I’m 8 .5 months in myself right now ...like you I’m a cold turkey sister!...my hair is long but more of a light brown/dark blonde.I love the colour of my silver /grey hair which is pretty consistent throughout apart from a couple of sections around the front underneath that are practically white that look ace when my hair is pulled back .I’m early 50s and have only had positive comments about it ...some even think I’ve dyed it that way as a kind of “out there”ombré effect! My virgin hair is soft/shiny/my scalp feels healthy/I’m saving a fortune at the salon that I was attending every 3 weeks and omg I’ve tons of new growth growing down now ...like a whole new hairline...!!...They literally used to start growing in but would just get destroyed every time I dyed it!...I so wish I had decided on this process long before I did ..but yes ,you have to be ready and in the right frame of mind!I love on trend clothes and makeup and make the best of myself (naturally!)but worried I’d blend into the crowd once grey ....simply not true!...I’m single(because I want to be) but still get asked out on dates with my silver/golden hair lol!!

JODI Sampson: I'm 11 months in on this process. I like you did not want to cut all my hair off so mine is white to about where yours ends also. I've had nothing but positive remarks from people. My husband says he likes it better. Wish I would have known that long ago. My hair color was very dark brown so I did get it lightened 4 times over a six-month period. And then have just let it go since then. I think my skin tone looks way better with my white hair also. I am 56 years old. Thank you for sharing!

susanhand1966: You just inspired me, I'm gonna find the Instagram group you talk about. Ive been wanting to go gray for a long time, I think I'm more worried about what people will think, but I am going to do it.. Thanks so much!!

Kim Leon-Guerrero: Congratulations on your 1th anniversary of embracing your silvers.

Teena Armstrong: There is also pot of silver at the end of this rainbow, lol lol lol ... Thank you, for sharing your journey and more so, your feelings!!! ❤

Tosha Rae: Happy 1 year Cold Turkey anniversary!!! Lol ... Great video and I love the silver polish!

Peace Kindness: Congratulations my silver sister☺️❤️

Sal Lee: Well done Katie.Hello im Sal in the U.K so nice to meet you..may i wish you congratulations 1 year now .Your an inspiration to all us ladies that's going through this spectacular journey ..It's been 6 months for me .I have more confidence now.. It's so fabulous we all support each other. ..great video..I am embracing my Platinum hair .I'm 52 .like yourself .your dog so cute ...I'm so glad your son is okay now..

Damelza T: I don’t know about you but I don’t have to wash my hair as much since I’ve gone grey. I’m at exactly the same stage as you but I covered my brown ends with pink. I’m not sure what to do with the eyebrow situation though! Best wishes, you look great!

Rachel Fall: What an honest and charming video. Thanks for sharing your story.

Tish Smiddy: Lovely look Try boat cut with 3 quarter length sleeves !!! Love lip stick

Ann Marie: Congrats! Love your co-star!❤️

M.A. jensen: Im at about 60 weeks . People are complimenting me . I never got any bad remarks. . But people that didnt think they would like it . Now say they love it and cant wait to see the end result. Yours looks great!

Warrior Goddess Crystal Geometry: Happy anniversary!!!

Shelly: Happy greyversary!

kerry lavelle: Beautiful your bold your beautiful and so is dog your my silver hair journey go to, I'm on month 1 of my journey like you same hair colour brunette babe to silver white babe XXX

Hopefaith& love: The best way to go grey is to just t let it grow..Be Patient...

Isabella Cicchetti: You are brave and nice and amazing.... and I agree with each word of your topic, but...where do you live? If I went around with my hair like you do (grey+brunette or grey+red), maybe here in Italy (where people is really obsessed by their look and by fashion) they would definitely try to give me a psychiatric help. It is not a joke: in my country women are not free to get rid of this problem without being conditioned . I don't want to be rude but the idea that almost all people share is: Cold Turkey= Mad Woman Thank you for your suggestion!

Mary Pettit: You look like you have alot of old dye at the bottom. There is a product I used called "Oops" which rinses out old dye. All you do is use this with water and the more you rinse the more old dye comes out. You will be surprised how much grey is under that dark hair.
