As you can see, although most of the hair is dark, the midtones & highlights of the hair are grayish & lean toward blue., We'll need to capture this in our painting for the most realism.. First & foremost, we need to start with an underpainting, which I teach you how to do in another. Video I'll include a link here, so you can check it. Out. Now to mix accurate hair colors I'll share how I mix a palette of these hair values using burnt umber as a base color. To mix the darkest value which is pretty much black. I'Ll mix burnt. Umber & ultramarine blue in a 1:1 ratio. Next I'll, gradually mix in white to create a gradient from dark to light and you'll. Pretty much have all of the values necessary to paint black hair. Next, what you'll do is you'll, take these values and dilute them with a lot of medium to create semi-transparent colors.. I use a 3:1 ratio of glazing medium, which is Galkyd gel by Gamblin for oil painters or, if you're, an acrylic, painter, you'll, use clear glazing. Medium. We'll be applying these semi-transparent colors to the underpainting in many layers to build up the color and details for the most optimal realism. Start with the darkest shadow & work. Your way up to the lightest value, using a filbert & angle, brush to create the brushstrokes for realistic hair strands painting in the direction of the hair. Flow. You'll want to be looking closely at your reference for this to capture the most realism as possible. There. You have my 4-step guide to painting black hair. First start with an underpainting next mix, accurate colors using burnt umber as the base color then dilute these colors using glazing.
