In 2020, we released a series of comprehensive textured hair programs to our partner Aveda Institutes, partner salons, and Aveda stores in the U.S. because that training is not a standard requirement in most U.S. states. Understanding begins with education and understanding overcomes fear.

To date, more than 10,000 stylists have participated in the programs, and we hope that number will continue to grow. It's one step we've taken to better serve and celebrate our textured hair community, and we know we have much more to do.

My sister was, i remember she was she came home crying one day and i was wondering why and she said to me, my boss told me that my hair was unprofessional. Now the story behind that was that she left straight, but it rained and it became curly. So she left it down curly and they immediately addressed her that left such an impact on me that i thought to myself why? Why is it something that grows out of your head unprofessional? So when i got into school, particularly at school, i remember seeing the books and wondering where, were there curly hair people in the educational manuals we all know in hair school? We had three pages that had any texture education and that all encompassed more relaxing. I learned in cosmo school. You learn one kind of hair. You learn what i call that white hair like when i learn textured hair. I learn on myself when i went to go teach at cosmetology school and i realized that there was no texture education. I was like oh so this is a common thing and then the more i did it. The more i realized, oh, my god, like no cosmetology school, is teaching textured hair. How is this possible? How are we cranking out hairstylists that, at the end of the day, say i'm a hair stylist and they can't there is like 65 of the population that they can't take care of. We know that anyone with curly hair has had a bad experience behind the chair. I wasn't the most knowledgeable stylist with curls and coils and making a guest one time feel as though my space wasn't inclusive for them, and i never wanted to give anyone that feeling again. That is a conversation that should be part of every salon. No one should walk into a space and feel uncomfortable. They walk in and have every stylist look at them and say i'm not doing that. That'S there's something wrong with that, and now, when somebody goes to cosmetology school, if you're gon na know every kind of hair, that's offered to me any hair that comes to my seat. At least i have a starting point: we're talking about texture types and patterns, um, we're making people understand what each curl pattern does. I want to take the fear away from the stylists who who say i don't know how to do it, let's figure it out together. Let'S figure it out together, because now you have an arsenal of products here that you need to learn how to use. What we're talking about is just cutting hair, styling, hair and once you have the knowledge, knowledge destroys fear and if all the people that we train can be on board with that mission, we'll do that. We'Ll change the industry, the story that it's been telling and i'm excited about that you

Jeanine Macklin: ABSOLUTELY LOVE this!!! It’s about time!!!

SharonDJohnson515: Wonderful to see & hear from these stylists. Would love to see C Suite leadership's make-up also. Also, would love to see (equal, non-predatory, transparent) partnering w/smaller Black owned haircare brands. Makeba @lovemakeba and Soultanicals are two good ones. Yes, this is counterintuitive to capitalist competition but do it anyway!

Tracy Fulce: Well done, Aveda!

Jazmin TheeFlower: ABSOLUTELY Love this!!!!

Aimee Hortence: How do you find out if you have a trained hairstylist on coiled hair in your area?

Fearless Ali: Hello Aveda, Do you arrange Visa for international students from country like India?
