What'S up y'all today we are going swimming, actually we're, not because it's march and it's freezing outside - and you can probably tell because i'm recording this and i'm super pale. But i want to dive down into some tips about children with curly hair and the rules of swimming all right guys. So when i grew up, i just jumped in the pool i went to the beach and my hair was fine. When i had beautiful mixed-race children, everything i knew about swimming changed. Okay, there are some rules. Now i worked really hard to get my children's beautiful mixed race curls to the way they are today and i'm not gon na. Let some fun swimming and fun pool time. Destroy the progress i have made so in this video, i'm sharing with you guys the tips that i have for protecting and ensuring that your beautiful biracial babies curls stay beautiful while going to the pool the beach and just enjoying life in general. So let's get started! Alright, so my first tip when it comes to swimming with curly hair for your kiddos is to make sure they are in a protective style. Now. What i mean by that is that they're, not just down out and about even a simple ponytail, is not going to do the trick when it comes to protecting curly hair. So all of my kiddos are in the three abc range and that's their curl pattern. Also, if you have children in the four abc range, it is so important to have a protective style. What i mean by that is that you have braided their hair. You have put it in some kind of twist some kind of style that is going to avoid the curly hair wrapping around itself, while your kids are out having fun playing around and enjoying the water. So when curly hair grows it's actually these coils, and even you notice, when you detangle your child's curly hair, it automatically is going to tangle back up. That is just the natural way that curls work they tangle upon themselves. So a protective style is going to keep all the curls going in one single direction: you're gon na tie it with a little rubber band. If you need to so that the style stays in some people might not need the actual rubber rubber band. But for me i just want to be extra safe, make sure that those braids are secured, that they're not going to come out now. I have so many different protective styles and i actually have a whole video on how to braid how to do french. Braids inverted. French braids - and you guys, can learn through that video. It'S like a 30 minute video of exactly step by step. Everything you need to know on how to braid practice makes perfect so stay with it, because protective styles are a must when it comes to protecting your child's curly hair while swimming all right. So my second tip is to use conditioners to make sure that water and any chlorine or salt is being blocked out from entering into your child's curly hair strands. Now this is a great product by so cozy it is a swim leave-in. All you have to do once your child is ready to swim spray. This on, i would also spray on water, because hydration for curly hair is the actual product plus water in order to moisturize their hair. Now i also would use a heavier butter or cream conditioner leave-in to make sure that your child's hair is fully protective when they enter the pool or the beach, not only this, but it protects it from the sun if you're out in the sun, you know mixed Children can get sunburns, so side tip is make sure you're applying your sunscreen, but with hair. The sun is also very drying to curly hair, so make sure that you're piling on your products before the pool i'll also mention that curly hair naturally wants to absorb any type of water product. Well, unless you have low porosity hair, but naturally it's going to want to take in whatever it's given. So if your child's hair is dry, then it's going to take in any water or product that you are trying to put in or that is trying to get into your child's hair. So if you have your child jump into a pool or the beach without protecting it with some kind of product, it's going to want to pull all the water from the pool or the beach, whether that includes salt or chlorine. It is going to just absorb all of that, while your kids are playing in the water so by protecting it with some kind of leave-in, cream or butter. Also, another good option is oil put an oil on, and some of you may find that using a oil actually has worked against you in the past when you're styling, your child's curly hair, because an oil has the natural tendency to block out anything else from entering Into your child's low porosity, curly hair, so by applying an oil to the hair before you get them into the pool or the beach, that's actually going to stop all of the chlorinated water and salt water from actually entering into their curls all right. So my third tip when it comes to your child swimming when they have curly hair, is to cleanse it after they come out the pool or the beach. Now. This is so important because even if you've used a conditioner or oil to block out that water from getting into their hair strands, it's not a foolproof method and their hair needs to be cleaned. Otherwise, it's going to be very drying and it will be detrimental to your overall curly hair routine and it can take a while to replenish those curls back to the natural state. So so cozy also has this swim three in one. It is a shampoo conditioner and wash it has activated charcoal in it, and what that actually does is removes chlorine from your child's curly hair. Now, all of these things that they put in pools these days, whether it be salt or chlorine, all of that is very drying. So not only do you want to wash out your child's curly hair in whatever they gained from the pooler beach, but you also want to do a deep conditioning treatment to restore their hairs natural moisture. A deep conditioning treatment is basically a conditioning mask that you will leave on their hair for about 15-20 minutes. You can use a shower cap. That would be very beneficial, especially if they do have low porosity hair. It will open up their strands and allow it to really allow that product to soak in once, you're done with the deep conditioning treatment go ahead and rinse it out and their curls should be pretty decent. Now i say pretty decent, because my next tip is something that i have not done and that is to have a swim cap now. This is so simple. I mean my children wear a satin bonnet when they sleep and that's keep their curls healthy and moisturized wearing a swim bonnet when they swim. It'S only natural that i'm protecting their hair strands there as well. So i haven't ordered this, but this is a product on amazon, it's a swim cap. It holds curly hair, especially if your child has thicker curly hair. This will protect them from getting so much chemical saw and all the bad things that might happen during swim time. Now, i don't believe swim caps are totally totally swim. Proof in that some kind of water is probably going to enter, but it will at least help my daughter, although i have done a deep conditioning treatment and - and i have cleaned out her curls from the swimming. I can tell that a lot of moisture was lost during our little mini vacation and it was only a few times of swimming, but that can be really detrimental to curls. So i know over the next few days and weeks i need to be heavy on the conditioner and replenishing her curly hair to get it back to the normal state, but don't make my mistake, i really feel that if i had a swim cap that i could Avoided the dryness state that it's really taken in at this time so make sure you have a swim cap and if your child doesn't like it, that's okay just keep making them wear it. If you don't give your child the option and be like no, you need this, then they're going to do it and that just comes with time continuously. Making this a routine and your children will get used to wearing a swim cap. Alright, so my fifth tip is: do a bond repair or see a professional if the damage is already done, curly hair! This is a journey. If you didn't know certain things, that's okay, just make sure you're continuously educating yourself about that. That'S why i have this channel here so, hopefully my passion and learning about curly hair. I can help other parents that are dealing with the same thing. We also have this community below so make sure you put something in the comment. Maybe there is a tip that i left out. I want you guys to share that in the comments below, but if the damage is already done, you want to look out for things like is your daughter or son experiencing breakage? Is it just overly dry where it needs something more than a deep conditioning treatment? So you can do what is called a bond repair treatment now this is similar to a deep conditioning treatment, but it's got more properties. That'S going to build the damage that was done while they were swimming also just be mindful of where you were were you at the beach, then your child's curly hair probably was exposed to salt and that can actually be softening to some curly hair. Now, for us we were at an indoor pool, so there was definitely chlorine and chemicals like that and with covid actually right now, who knows what else they are putting into the water these days just to keep everybody safe, so make sure you see a professional if You'Re not sure how to react after the damage has been done. Also just educate yourself. This is a learning journey, so i appreciate you guys watching this video to make yourself more knowledgeable when it comes to your child's curly hair. Alright.
