I'M not gon na say that blonde is out. I'M not. I never said that, but brown is definitely in even miss haley bieber she's got that beautiful, like natural light brown and better. Yet if you want something, that's dimensional, you can't just slap one color all over your head and here's. Why? What'S good everybody? It'S your main girl, mel, professional stylist, curl, specialist and healthy dimensional, color enthusiast after recently toning, my blonde back down to a natural looking brown. I feel it is my responsibility to share the need to nose, because no toning down your color is not as easy as just slapping a box on your head and wishing for the best there's a lot of risk doing that to your head. If done incorrectly, darkening blonde hair can result in uneven green tinted, hollow muddy, looking color that doesn't last long and can leave your hair in a more damaged state than when it was blonde. So in this video we're going to talk about the darkening process, the maintenance requirements and some of the realities of toning, your hair darker after it's been previously lightened. So before you decide to take the dark hair, plunge make sure you stay tuned. For this whole video i'll be sharing all my pro tips, so you can properly prepare your head for your appointment and also showing you how i achieve this look at home, because i know that's what many of you are going to want to do. I actually picked up some color from sally, so i could test that out for you, so the review and the formulas coming up without further ado, let's dive deeper into it, because the colors are deeper. You know what i mean when i say deeper on the level system. We have a level 10 which is high high once upon a time. I was a level 10 and now i'm below level 7, which leads me to my first point: if the color that you are looking to achieve is three or more levels darker than your starting point, then your color service is a color correction and that's really important To note, when you're booking your service with your professional stylist, that way, you have enough time for your appointment, because it's gon na take two colors to get your results, a result that is rich and better. Yet if you want something, that's dimensional, you can't just slap one color all over your head and here's why this lovely level system that we see which describes the lightest light blonde and the darkest dark brown and everything in between all has a background. This is the nrp charts. Are the natural remaining pigment charts? These are the undertones at these levels and, for example, when you're at a level 10 blonde or even a level 9. The natural remaining pigment left in your hair after bleaching is pale, yellow or yellow or even yellow orange. But when you're looking to go a rich dark brown color like a level 4 or level 5 brown, which is maybe the color that's growing out of your head, the natural remaining pigment at those levels is red. So, while coloring your hair darker, you need to fill that missing natural remaining pigment which is going to give the richness and the longevity to your hair and not make it look hollow muddy and even green or ashy. Looking so be aware, it is very important if you're going from very light colors to darker colors, you need to fill that natural remaining pigment back into the hair by putting on warm toned, color letting that process and then coloring. Over top of that, with the end result that you're looking for, which is what's truly going to give you deeper and longer lasting results, but also well, it's it's just a longer process in general. Now for the lazy, impulsive diyer at home, i know what you're thinking isn't there an easier and faster and better way there is an easier and faster way, which is what i was able to do to achieve. My look. Allow me to walk you through how i achieved this coloring. This is my hair before freshly recoloring, like i have done here today, that was hair after fading for like three and a half weeks, and several washes in between with lots of different products and shampoos that weren't specifically for color treated hair. But i digress as you can see, she was back to being a blondie and just a few we'll talk about how to avoid this from happening. Anytime, you're going to be applying a color on your head, you need to factor in that. Half of your end result is already on your head, so you need to use what you've already got and then remember that you're adding to it. So, let's figure this out, shall we i strongly encourage you to use charts. My before hair the lightened highlighted parts were a medium light blonde shade that looks about a level eight. It was also warm and brassy, so the undertones are like a yellow orange. But since i wanted to drop my hair color down to around my natural root color, which is a level five, i knew i needed to formulate really warm and if you're scared of warmth then get out no i'm kidding. Well, then, don't do it, but just know that hair that is lightened in pores as he operates very funny. It actually rejects warm tones, which is why it's important to put a lot of warmth in your formula. Even if you're looking for an ashy or cool toned end result, because if i'm not taking the nrps and the level systems all into consideration, and i just went to the store and picked up an ash brown color, my hair would come out a muddy, color and Fade very green show of hands if you've been there. If you have suffered through green and hollow hair, because ash did you wrong, put your hands up because here's the thing hair, color, that's in the box, is meant to go on hair. That is already that color or that level. Now, as for what color we want to be using if you're going darker use a demi, because demi is going to be less damaging on your hair, since it's already been pre-lightened and lifted, demi permanent color is going to make use of the porosity. That'S in your hair and be much more gentle. Now, for the first time i tried ion color, i tried their color brilliance, demi permanent line, and i picked up a few different shades for me to work with and mix based on what they had available and what may also be available to you if you're doing This at home, these are over-the-counter products, not just for professional use, which was a first for me. I always use professional products on myself, but i wanted to share a little review. So we'll talk more about that soon. Now that we've got our products. Let'S talk about the process, finally, you're ready for color, but are you ready for color? How dirty is your hair if you've ever heard that coloring dirty hair is better than you heard wrong? This is a very old school mentality that does not rain to be true anymore. Back in the day when hair color was much harsher, it was recommended not to wash your hair for a couple days before your appointment. That way, your natural oils could create a protective barrier over your scalp, but nowadays products are much more gentle and it's become lost in translation that your hair should be dirty before your appointment, which is absolutely false. It'S just going to create a barrier and make it harder for your color to get into your hair where it needs to be so. It'S absolutely recommended to pre-wash and clarify your strands before your color. I always go in with the malibu c undo: goo ph9 shampoo. It'S an absolute amazing, go-to amazing, clarifying treatment that i won't be using for a while. Now that my color is fresh, but it's the perfect product to use before coloring. Not only is it going to help to clarify your hair, but the high ph 9 shampoo is also going to help to soften your strands and swell them a little bit which will make them a little bit more accepting of the color. That being said, if you have very high porosity hair and very damaged ends, you may also want to condition before coloring one of the biggest challenges of lightening your hair is the porosity issues that it creates. So, in my case, for example, the parts of my hair that were really blonde are going to be like a sponge and have the tendency to really grab on to the color very quickly. This can be really scary because it can make the color result. Look a lot darker than expected, which is not too much of a worry because, like a sponge, it will also spit that color back out very quickly, but to prevent that color from aggressively grabbing. We want to make sure that we even out the porosity as best as possible, so you can simply use a conditioner if it's a protein conditioner that would be best. You can also use a protein filler or i'm using k18, which is a professional only product if you're getting this done in salon and your stylist offers k18 absolutely do it, it's worth it, and it will also help to repair any previous damage in my hair to One protect it while coloring, but also help with the color longevity, because color will hold way better to healthy hair than to super damaged hair. Now that i've prepped the hair, shaft you're gon na see me do something a little cheeky. I first start by mixing up a lighter color, which i am going to be foiling into my hair. If we recall my blonde was about a natural level, eight, so i'm just putting an eight natural color on these highlighted pieces to keep them looking highlighted throughout my dark hair. This isn't so much highlighting any of my hair, but it's making use of the already present highlights and isolating them from the rest of my hair, which i will be coloring darker just so i could keep some dimension in my hair, which is really important for me, And my curls so that you could truly appreciate all of their glory. But if i already like the tone of my hair, i could even just use conditioner before going in with the main shades. The first thing we're going to be applying a root shade, since my roots are a different color for my ends. I'M applying two different formulas, so i mix together a 5n with some 7n warmth and apply that all over my base, aka my roots, keeping the root shade deeper for even more depth. Now, based on the reviews that i read this demi permanent color is also effective. At covering, or at least blending gray roots, so if you have some white or gray hairs and you're looking for some coverage or blending, i can't personally speak to how it will work. But i've heard good things and first impression is mixing up this color. It has a really light: floral scent, it's not strong or aggressive, there's no ammonia in the color. So it's not going to have that strong smell or have any lift in the color. Now this color has a 25 minute processing time, which means i do want to work pretty fast right after the roots are on. I mix up my ends, color, which we're doing after because again, our ends are more porous. It'S going to grab on to the color quicker, so we do those last. Please note that if you're looking to achieve my color but you're, not starting from the same starting point as me, then our end results are not going to look the exact same. But as a rule of thumb, because i needed to supply that warmth into these blonde ends, i'm making sure that at least half of my color formula is the warm shade and the other half is the natural deep shade. So i mixed a 7w with a 6n did this look and feel scary while it was on my head absolutely even for me, but if there's one very important piece of advice i can give you is that you need to trust the process so just step back And let the color process, i set a timer for 25 minutes after everything was covered, and then i was ready to wash and washing is a whole other process to wash out hair color. It'S really important to make sure that you keep rinsing until the water runs clear. Then it's going to be best to use a shampoo and conditioner. That is meant to preserve color and better, yet don't skip a treatment. I picked up the ion color brilliance after color treatment, because i just wanted to try it and wow. This is one of those products that the moment i put it on my head. I audibly said yes, it just melted right into my hair. It felt super super soft and i let that sit on for a few minutes before rinsing and after color treatment like so is going to help preserve your color longer, but also stop it from further developing. If there is any chance that you left some product in your hair because you hadn't properly shampooed it, it's also going to help bring down the ph of your hair to help lock everything in calm, your cuticle, smooth it and smoothing it was it literally glided on My hair and made it feel like butter. This is already one wash post color. I use the rest of this packet today and i'm very pleased with how my hair looks. I don't think it really faded. However, post color we're gon na need to do some maintenance. Besides, using a shampoo and conditioner that is meant to conserve your color, i also strongly recommend getting a color, depositing shampoo and conditioner or mask or leave-in, even whatever fits into your routine best color. Depositing products are going to help to enrich your color in between appointments, but, most importantly, the best way to conserve your color is by spreading out your wash days, the less you wash the longer your color will last you, but that's not all you can do make Sure you're also using products that have uv and heat protection, because that's going to help protect your hair from the sun and from high temperature hot tools, and i also recommend using antioxidant enriched products as well. I recently received the olaplex number nine antioxidant serum, which i'm still testing out, but i'm really loving it. It feels really hydrating very slippery. It'S great for detangling and antioxidants in general, in your hair products, help to improve the integrity of your hair and, most importantly, that color retention, which is what we are looking for and, let's see, i think, my final tip for you would be to use lots of Oils on your hair, especially before washing practice, hair, oiling the night before you wash or just make sure you're using an oil on your ends. This will help protect your color for when you're washing, but also just give your hair tons of shine, which the brown will already be doing. That'S the magical thing about getting away from blonde the shine and the life is just. It speaks for itself and i'm very pleased with how my hair looks. I don't think it really faded, but if you really want to see how it lasts, then you need to make sure that you're subscribed to me because we post weekly videos on this channel follow along to see how it continues to last and i will be documenting The process for my tic toc and instagram at maine's by mel, but first impressions, i'm very happy with the color. I think my results look amazing. The hair is shiny, it feels strong. It feels soft, and i do feel like the color - is rich and true to tone. So i was very pleased with my color choices and again the results, especially considering that these are not professional products. If you wanted to look into any of the products that i used for this process and mentioned throughout this video, i will have them linked in the description box, so you can check them out there. I think they did a great job. Let me know if this video has inspired you either to do your hair at home by yourself or to call a professional which is recommended, but again i digress. I hope that you found this video very helpful. Give this video a thumbs up if you did again make sure you're subscribed, so you can see how this lasts me and drop a comment on anything else that you would like to see. This has been your main girl, mal and i'm out peace conclusion. I am unwell, founded wow wow. Always it's always like this. Why, maybe not maybe not? Maybe not you know what they say about about curly hair, it's just. It has a mind of its own. Oh yeah, yeah, yeah yeah. Thank you so much. Thank you, and even better, yet don't skip and escape don't skip. It. Don'T skip me. Okay, this! If you got one ton. Yes, have you heard the good news you finished? I finished. I have a pinched nerve in my back and it's really bad. It'S like really bad. I can barely walk, so i don't think i'm gon na be able to walk. Oh no sally beauty. This is pretty ugly. This is why i'm going to be coloring. Oh, i wish i could not run everything i sign up. You know what it's like being trapped inside my brain. It'S a hell in here

Felicia Bethea: I think the brown looks spectacular on you!!! You can truly wear both, and have them look equally lovely.

Molly Lighthart: This is so helpful! I went from strawberry blonde highlights to auburn this super helped for maintenance, thanks Mel!

C. C.: It's "what's good" Tuesday! Hi Mel and Amanda! I would love to see ya'll both try the Curlsmith or As I Am gel colors.

marisol501: Love this! Would love ideas/tips on hiding/blending premature grays on dark brown hair.

L Bloodkith: Haven't dyed my hair in a long time. I generally prefer red-orange tones. I have had a lot of people including stylists be surprised that my hair holds the reds for quite a while. And that was even before I had a better understanding of how to preserve hair color. Will be nice in the future next time I dye it to see how long I can keep it radiant!

Christina: This explains so much of what I’ve done wrong to my hairs Absolutely love your videos!

Emmalineofficial: Me: *a natural brunette with no real reason to watch this video as the subject matter doesn’t necessarily pertain to me….* Also me: *watches entire video and is entertained the whole way through because Mel is just that good at what she does*

Robyn Agbenu: Thanks Mel! I recently coloured my hair (to dark red rather than dark brown) but some of the tips were still super useful! Do you have any recommendations for colour depositing products? (Leave ins etc)

Mara Diaz: This video confirmed that I will leave my hair color to my amazing stylist!! Thanks for all the tips Mel!

Frances Keller: I’ve personally also gone from a medium to dark reddish blonde to a dark chocolate brown with dark honey highlights. Thank you for the education!

Juli: hi mel! i have your same curl type and last week i colored my hair from blonde to brown, too!

theiloveovaltine: Where was this video 10 years ago when I was inadvertently dyeing my hair green?? As always thank you for all the wonderful info, I don’t color my hair anymore but I do have a daughter that forces me to experiment with her hair Also this color looks absolutely gorgeous on you

BatN1ppl3s: I got pintura highlights 2 years ago and it was so god damn difficult to keep up with the different porosities in my hair. I can't even get consistently good wash days now with the porosity I have but you're right the dimension was beautiful. I'm loving the brown on you, do you miss the blonde at all?

Shae Poppinkurlzdc: If I knew all this when I decided to go back black after being blue I wouldn’t be apart of the curly girl community. After that mess I had to do the big chop and restart my hair journey.

lexi: I’m going back to natural color next month at a salon and I really hope it will last!!! I’ve been a blonde for about 3-4 years now

Diane M: You look gorgeous with the darker color. I love ion products. Been using it for years. The after color treatment is fantastic. I also use their pre color treatment.

M Rence: Mell, I ❤️ your “Coffee Color” hair!!! It reminds me of my Mom’s real hair color! I have Dark Ash Blonde hair, and the 1st time I lightened it, it STOPPED at Circus Clown Red/Orange! I quickly learned I needed a higher volume peroxide!!!

Christina Tortorilla: Looks fantastic! I've got virgin hair at this point and too many of my favorite YouTubers are dying dark and I'm feeling the itch! My natural hair is a medium brown but I definitely miss having super dark brown hair. What would you suggest for the least amount of damage possible going a shade or two darker?

Kaleka Quinones: I have leftover blonde but my hair is same curls and texture as you Mel. I saw you do a cool tone brown in your video going over the winners of 2021. I really want to achieve that but have it last longer. Super excited for this video before my service

Star 123: GREAT VIDEO!! I can raise my hand to most every hair color mistake except for the green. LOL I have definitely been every shade of brass . I quit the DIY route and let the professionals do my color now.

Melina Sica: Very useful ! But I honestly haven’t dyed my hair for 6 almost 7 years :) but still loving these learning videos❤️❤️

Emily: This was really fun to learn! Thanks! For products after color, is there anything specific I should try for orange/red? I get a good 3 months out of it. Real color very dark brown with grey & white. I’ve been a 7OR for years with varying shades of blonde highlights. I let my stylist/friend have fun with those. In 10 years, there were only 2 I wasn’t crazy about & I agreed in advance. (Thin “sun kissed” lights and low lights.) This also makes me appreciate her even more. The first time she did my hair was a color correction. I wanted natural red highlights. My then stylist showed me the fire engine color red he thought would be fun & kept trying to talk me into. I specifically said no & showed him the swatch. I didn’t want to need to bleach it. I didn’t realize what he did until he said how the bleaching made it pop. The lighting conveniently changed a bit & I couldn’t see it that well. Then he did a fun up do for free. When I got home & took out all the pins I saw the fire engine red streaks & the uneven cut. A stylist friend 900 miles away said try a clarifying shampoo. It was then neon orange. I found someone with an opening 2 days later. It took 4 hours, but she made my hair look amazing & I had a new stylist. No one touches my color but her.

Dejanira Cosme: My respects for you who was able to do all this process on your own hair and by yourself

Audrey Woodside: Your hair looks beautiful I love the updated look

Ella Garfi: I really adore this colour on you! I have brown hair and have been thinking about getting subtle highlights, like what you have atm. I wanna get that DIMENSION.

Jackie Marriott: Awesome video Mel !.. What would you use to cover grays, basically at the hairline?

Sara: I NEVER leave comments - that said, since I dye my hair red (which Mel points that the molecules fade the quickest) I recommend making a diy overtone conditioner when your color fades and you need to deepen it. One part manic panic/Arctic fox or Adore with 2 parts non silicone conditioner. Although my hair is red this can also apply to darkening hair with a brown tone. This way I also keep my dimension (highlights). This may not work as a permanent solution BUT if you want to experiment with darkening your shade it is also a safer (non damaging) BUILDABLE semi-permanent way to try it out. Since transitioning my fried super porous hair about a year ago I have only colored the entirety of my hair with chemicals once and my hair is just as vibrant as it was when I was refreshing the color with chemicals every time I retouched my roots. You can also use this method to warm up ash tones. Hope this made sense Just a suggestion ♥️ Mel your hair looks frickin’ incredible (as usual) ♥️

Tiffany Bartholomew: Great video! I definitely see why you need to go to school for this. You literally blew my mind about washing and treating your hair before a color. I also just got the curlsmith hair dryer and it is so amazing. The diffuser is so big!! I used it for the first time today and I thought it would be easier but it’s been a long time since I got a hair dryer and I’m going to need a Manes by Mell tutorial!! Love you guys so much. I look forward to your videos. ❤️❤️❤️

KimDe05: Now see I am a natural dark brown and here is where I stump everyone. My undertones is actually blond. Most stylist are quite shocked by it. One actually didn't believe till then took my hair down a level and found out I was blond.

gazel70: I'd like to see about coloring gray hair darker and getting good coverage

Peyton Vogler: you seem to always post exactly what i need when i need something. wow.

BRENDA LEE VILLARREAL: LOVE YOUR HAIR. BECAUSE OF YOU I HAVE MANAGED TO KEEP MY HAIR CURLS ON POINT.

Hattie Atkinson: I don’t colour my hair but have been thinking about going lighter blonde. I was thinking of trying out the john freida products. Maybe you have already done a review that I am not aware of but would love to know what you think of them! Thank you for an informative video as always

M Cos: Hey Mel! I went ginger some time ago and I want to go back to my brown. Would you say it’s similar for this process?

Dawn Wetzel: I just love all your hair tips. Could you give us that are going grey tips on how to care for those pesky wire-like hair, thank you so much.

Bailee Huckleberry: Im a hairstylist so I already knew all of this but I still watched all of it just because I love Mel

Lexis Evans: Can you do a video on options for covering/hiding your gray hair?

L P: I love your hair color p.s. I’ve had the green hair experience thanks to a horrible salon experience.

Hilda Figueroa: Good evening Mel, this video was very helpful. I want to know if this tip will work by using plant base hair coloring? I've been using Inspired by Nature Ammonia free by Ion for the past 4 years and I love it especially the dark colors. Have a bless night and God bless you and your family.

Perla: I love how “darkest brown” was shown darker looking than black on the scale

Lynnette Wood: Great idea to keep your highlights, I did this a few years ago with a red tinted brown and turned out great!

Mary Schlundt: Wow, thanks for the info. I suppose I got lucky going from level 10 to level around 6. I used Agebeautiful 6g and it went well. In the sun it has slight red tones to wear people ask what red I used, but I like it. Now to battle a few grays popping out but not sure I want to color again because I’m trying to heal my waves. Is just coloring roots and a few grays ok?

Pamela Rubel: Can I apply the same steps if I want to change my highlighted curls to a deep navy blue? My hair is about a level 5, VERY fine, and the color is what i would describe as grey brown, and the highlights range from level 8 to level 10 -it was all rinsed at the same time so different sections had different processing times-. I want my navy blue hair to have dimension, and I sometimes wear my hair straightened, but mostly curly!

Lyana Gonzalez: I personally love the brunette trend dk if is cuz makes me feel better abt my natural color which is very dark but i’ve been told by everyone to only get highlights cuz my natural base is stunning so ig i should like it more also idk why i think dark hair makes everyone look better cuz blond can wash u out

ny4000: Your hair looks so good brown. Your best color yet in my opinion.

SneakerTeacher89: This color looks so good on you !!!!

Ariel: Mell, can you give me all the tips for maintaining brown hair colored red? I'm constantly battling going back & forth between the colors! Is it ok to do that? Any tips you have will be greatly appreciated! Curly love from me to you!❤️➿️❤️

grace: Such pretty results!

Addie Barrilo: Ion’s been one of my favorite brands for the last few years because the products make my Sicilian fro so soft and shiny, it smells amazing, and their toners have greatttt color payoff. Plus it’s cheap af compared to anything else in the same league. Their Agebeautiful ultra bond conditioning treatment is better than any Olaplex treatments I’ve used. High porosity, 3C, dry ass, longggg hair so if anyone has that going on maybe their stuff will work for you‍♀️. Great as a deep conditioner if you wash your hair 1-2X/week too. Can’t believe more people don’t mention it on here. So happy you got into it!!

Firestina 13: ‍♀️ I would deliberately wait and not wash my hair for 2 weeks to make sure that the color takes. Lol no wonder it didn't always work. Lol I'm naturally multicolored so that could have been part of it as well. I have light brown, dark brown, black with red and blonde natural highlights with natural grey, white and silver hair as well now. I love the Ion dyed and line and also Sally Beauty. Thank you for this Video, been thinking about dying my hair again and you gave me some ideas of a better way to do it now.

Joshua: I love the ion after color treatment I use the duo kit to make a conditioning mask for my hair and leave it on for 30 minutes to an hour it makes my hair super soft

Sienna Hulen: Hey Mell! I have exceedingly curly hair, its just as curly if not more curly than your hair! I love all your videos and they are all super helpful. Do you have any tips for girls with super brittle hair that are super curly? My hair is super thin and it makes it super hard to style. When I style it either turns out flat or frizzy, I can't find the inbetween.

Leah Bordeaux: Mell over here making me wanting to go back to my natural brown too

Sri Ranjani: Oh i missed the bloopers last week i always enjoy the bloopers ❤️ looking awesome Mell

Demi: I wanted to dye my hair, but I'm scared of the damage

Eman Sayed: hey mell, i was wondering if you could make a hair colouring vid when you’re dying your hair the ‘fun’ colours like blue or purple because I don’t know what sort of colour level it would be. love you

Monica Nawar: I absolutely LOVE ion products for coloring - it's been my go to for years!

Lexia Lee: love the eyeliner the whole look ...looks amazing you~

Kathleen Humphrey: Ok but what do I do if I've already gotten my hair done and it's faded to a green tone? Idk how to fix it and I'm walking around with olive hair lol

Maya Murphy-Cook: Mell, Mell can you please do a video on glossing curly hair, and a video on the Rezo cut

Melissa: Just in time.. I really want to dye my hair, going brown. I haven’t dyed it in years But I need to detox my hair 1st and get it healthier.

Melissa: Will that Malibu C get rid of years of silicone buildup? I’ve heard apple cider vinegar is great for it… but kinda skeptical on DIY’s.

Herbalina: I love a good demi! Your hair looks beautiful.

Melissa Weiss: ‍♀️Question: Are you coloring on wet / damp hair? [Comment: Love you and your seester. Recommend you to EVERY curly girl and happily some already knew you. I love how you explain everything.]

K G: I hope you both had a ton of fun on vacation!!!

Naturally Beautiful: You looked awesome with your blond but there is something about this brown that makes you glow. I really like the color on you.

Amy Senffner: Love the color!!!! Looks amazing!

LadyBird 93: Loving your hair this colour!

DaisyL87: Hello Mell, The Color on your Hair looks so Good and Beautiful also Vibrant thank you for those Advice you Awesome, again Thank You, for another Texture Tuesday, for our Beautiful Curly Hair❤️☕️☕️☀️☀️

Ariel: Mell speaking another language here!I color my own hair at home...but I get it already formulated for me! I wish I was as smart as you!

Miamilove: Mel I have a question please after wash day I been keeping my hair in lose pig tail braids most of the time to keep from washing to much and getting matted and on occasions I will leave it down and curly, will keeping the curls combed out and in braids ruin the curl pattern? That's the last thing I want to do I love my curls but they become so matted after a few days even with silk pillow case and salon products. Thank you so much!
