-My whole life - I didn't know my hair was curly.. I was bullied a lot and I wanted to fit in in high school, so I would bleach it all. The time. My hair was falling out., It was bad. Like my hair was dead.. I feel like hair is really symbolic. When you dye your hair, you're kind of transitioning into like a different part of your life., Going through what I've gone through. I really think that red would be a really good transition into a new part of my life., Hey, I'm Ayden and I'm here with Refinery29. Today, I'm getting my hair done for the first time, professionally. I'm going from brown box dye to red.. I'Ve done a lot of colors in my hair.. I'Ve done like pink, I've done purple, I've done blue and red is just something that I've always wanted to. Try. This past year has been probably the hardest year of my life.. I lost my job because of COVID.. I was diagnosed with an ectopic pregnancy and my doctors didn't even think that I was gon na survive.. It'S been a really really hard year and your hair can be really transformative and it's an expression of yourself.. I really really want to get my hair changed and I think that's going to be really good for me. -Hi. My name is Stevie Smith., I'm a master colorist and we're here today at my salon, Smith & Davis in Chicago Illinois.. My specialty for hair color is hair transformations, --, bleach and tones as well as fun. Color pops mixed in with natural color. Today on Ayden's hair, we're going to be removing some of that old built-up box. Color. Then we're going to add some multidimensional highlights and then do a color overall to enhance Ayden's, beautiful skin and eye color. Hi Ayden -Hi -Welcome. -Thank you. -Tell me again --. When was the last time you colored, your hair -I was using like brown and black box dyes, so I've been using that.. The last time I used it was like two months ago. I would say. -We had thrown out some ideas about doing some reds, which is definitely feasible. Today. We'll see how light we can get it and get some pieces in there and then we'll go all over the whole thing with a demi-permanent color and we'll pick out the right shade of hue. That'S gon na be perfect for your eye shade and your skin tone as well. -Okay awesome. -Does that sound good You're gon na be here for a little bit.. You ready -I'm so excited to do. This. -For the first step in Ayden's color transformation, I'm using a citric acid and vitamin C color reducer.. This is going to ensure that I gently remove the most amount of those color molecules that have been built up from her box color.. I'M going to put that on dry hair., We're going to let that sit for 30 to 40 minutes under heat. ♪♪, Then I'll rinse for five minutes and then we'll blow it dry. ♪♪. I'M now going through Ayden's hair after we've used the color reducer and I'm going to add some multidimensional, balayage highlights., I'm using a clay lightener and a gentle developer in order to ensure again that Ayden's hair is left healthy and lush.. Balayage is a free-form hair-painting lightening process that allows for a more organic and soft grow out.. I don't want Ayden to have a high maintenance hair color that she has to keep up with., I'm using a process called teasy lights, taking sections of hair and lightly teasing. The hair to leave a more organic feel so that there won't be any harsh lines.. I want it multidimensional, but I don't want it to be stripe-y or high contrasting.. When I'm working with a client. I find my inspiration from the client themselves. I like to ask a lot of questions about their lifestyle, about who they are as a person and that's what inspires me to give them. What is going to make them feel and look their best. We'll let this sit for about 30 to 40 minutes., We'll then shampoo, towel-dry and move on to our next step. ♪♪. I am now applying the demi-permanent red shade.. I'M making sure that I have even saturation all throughout. ♪♪. This will process anywhere from 20 to 30 minutes. ♪♪, I'm now shampooing Ayden with a color-safe shampoo.. I love Ayden's natural texture, so I'm using right now a color-safe hydrating mousse., I'm adding a few drops of a macadamia oil for some added moisture and shine. And I'll be diffusing. Her hair dry to maximize her beautiful curls. And then we'll see the final look. ♪♪ Open. -Oh, my God -Do. You love it -It's, like wine, red., That's so pretty.! It makes my eyes like pop., -Yeah. ♪♪ And my curls look really good too. Wow. -Oh yay, yay, yay. -Thank, you so much., Oh my gosh., -You're, so welcome.. I can't wait to go outside and take a look at it in the natural light. -In the sun. It'S gon na be so red. Like. Oh, my God. -Yeah, it's gon na be amazing. -I love it.. This is exactly what I had envisioned.. I didn't want it to be like too red like a fire truck. So I'm super excited and happy about how it turned out. -I think Ayden looks sophisticated yet fun.. It looks healthy shiny.. We embraced her natural curls.. The color just looks amazing, with her skin tone and her eyes are radiant.. -Oh working with Stevie today was absolutely awesome.. She listened to everything that I wanted and she told me that I should embrace my natural hair.. It was just an amazing experience to be here. Today. -Ayden's hair transformation is going to grow out beautifully, so it's not going to require a lot of maintenance. As far as her coming back in the salon., However, she is going to have to take care of it at home.. Reds can fade, so it's definitely important that you use a color-safe shampoo as well as using a sunscreen. -So. I definitely think I will see a stylist again., Maybe my years of box dyeing are over, which I'm sure is gon na make Stevie happy. So yeah.. The first person I'm gon na show my new hair to is my boyfriend. When I walk in the house., I think when my boyfriend sees my hair, he's gon na be really happy and give me a million kisses.. So I'm excited about that.. This new hair really makes me feel sexy.. I know most of it comes from the inside, but I feel like now. My personality is kind of showing more in my hair, which is something I've always wanted, and I definitely love it. ♪♪

RedHairedRiot: She’s a beautiful girl—I hope she makes her way more toward an auburn or gingery red from this. Red is her color, I don’t love this shade though

Kimberley McGregor: She honestly is STUNNING and her hair is the most beautiful thing about her - just shows how jealous those bully’s were!

Matt 1: great transformation. as a hairstylist I know how hard it is to work with box dyes, if you're lucky it turns out patchy and uneven, if you're unlucky it can literally snap off lol the colourist did a great job

Brianna: She is gorgeous, her eyes are beautiful!

C C: By far one of the best colourists I’ve seen on these transformation videos, her hair looked awesome afterwards! Red often seems to look really flat but this didn’t at all and I think it’ll grow out well too.

Zali Lulu: OKAY THEY ARE EMBRACING THE NATURAL CURLS FINALLY!!!!!!! I'm obsessed so glad to see lately how refinery videos are increasing in quality. Loved the montage at the end and the hair stylist

Jackie Bobos: This is honestly the best transformation I’ve seen- this is stunning on her and compliments her features so well

JamesB02: I had been dying my hair an intense dark red for over 25 years. My dad passed in Feb. this year a week after his 76th birthday. Since I started going gray at 23 I kept it colored. I now am letting my gray show as I have been on this earth long enough to have gray hair. Ayden's hair turned out great I like the high/lowlights that when it grows out it won't be so noticeable she needs to refresh her look.

Natalie Holmes: Omg this has to be my most favourite episode yet, the colourist and ayden are both gorgeous and the hair came out fantastic and I now want something like for my hair.. Great job

Sad Kermit: not only did the stylist do a great job but she also has the sweetest personality! hopefully we get to see her in more videos :D

Miss B: I love it. Fringe could have used a little more red but overall gorgeous. Yay for natural curls. The free form placement of the highlights go great with the natural flow of her hair.

Scarlett Louise Fox: She is so beautiful and looks incredible. I personally think that the fashion colour makes her look like a rock chick and I am living for it I really hope that her year starts to improve too

what ever: That's THE look for her, it's gorgeous. The stylist did a great job.

Tanja: Ayden's style of fashion is fantastic..so love it.....The stylist jumper so trending in major cities~ love her style abs hair ... Ayden's eyes are her "POP OF COLOR SPARKLING THEY ARE" Stylist for sure is "PHENOMENAL" explains each process.... Ayden's looking "GORGEOUS" with red hair ❤️

Caitlin: So gorgeous. If I had a hair stylist like Stevie, I’d never let her go! She seems to really care about getting it right and just sweet in general. It’s also nice to see the natural curls being embraced. In similar videos the hair transformations seem to be all about blowing their hair out into the same style for the last 10 years, and stick-straight hair ruled before that. As someone with naturally very curly hair, I hated my hair since childhood.

Shani Maya: she's so beautiful, I'm so happy she takes action about moving towards self love. Absoulotley stunning, and looking good with either hair color <3

JudyCZ: Great transformation and also fun to see a stylist from elsewhere than California or New York.

Casey Cronan: I love the colorist’s style! Those earrings and buns with the striped blouse are so vibrant!

JuaniqueVerde: OK!!!! I love this color on Ayden! Stevie did a wonderful job! I wish they would consult loose curly/wavy haired people on how to maximize their hair pattern. That’s the only thing I didn’t like: was her hair “curls”.

Lisa: Love the result!!! Both the client and stylist look amazing!

Dori B.: Hi love this color is really lovely on you , I like how the stylist took her time to get to know her clients. Beautiful lady and you have lovely eyes. Thanks for sharing

Addides Pickens: She looks beautiful good job it makes her look like a rebel I love it

Pranathi K.: she's so stunning!! her eyes, her nose shape, her curls!! just WOW her style looks cool too but to me her voice sounds like dixie damelio...

Sunkissed Nae: THIS COLOR IS STUNNING ON HER ❤️‍❤️‍

❥Brave •.: she’s so freaking pretty oh my

LNGG's Channel: Looks natural and beautiful. ❤

Paula Stack: Absolutely BEAUTIFUL.Incredible work!!!!xxxx

Bear: I regret putting platinum blonde highlights in my virgin hair. It literally sucked the life out of my hair.

sidhu: I’m been wanting to go this colour red so I’m hyped I have something to reference. Aidan looks amazing !!!!

prisma juarez: Really look so beautiful that color looks so beautiful on her hair she looks so amazing

iT's CHOMIKO: She is absolutely stunning!!! Ginger or Orang hair gonna be looks so bomb on her!

Blu-Sczes: Looks fabulous!

bbygrlpt2: Love it!! Thats the color I want too but that whole process sounds timing.. idk but I love that color

Jasmine Gutierrez: I love the red, any dark red color shades like that are beautiful to me

Georgia: i love Ayden's side profile! So beautiful

Friday: Me: she looks so familiar. Colorist: we’re in Chicago Me in Chicago:

Danikah Smith: That definitely came out amazing

N H: It looks like it took to dark as the base color, that has happened to me after using color remover before. Hopefully it washes out a bit for her to look natural

H Lothridge: You were bullied because you’re beautiful!! ❤️❤️

Brittney Thompson: So she's really beautiful, & I can totally tell what the stylist was trying to do would have ended up looking really amazing on her... But is it just me or do hairstyles involving diffusers always turn out trash? Her natural curls have been so burnt out and straightened away, I really think the stylist should have just proper curled the hair so she could truly see the vision... idk

V. T.: Why isn't anyone mentioning the coolest shower head ever!!?? 2:45

Privatsphäre: So beautiful ❤️you are brave and have a Special kind of beauti

Sabrina Lozar: She is gorgeous, however, the new color not so much. I am sorry but I don't think that the Master colorist did a good job. Judging from the before I'm confident that she will have no problem in fixing it herself.

Scotty Don'know 7564: I don't know what about her is so sexy to me. It just is. Maybe her voice, her unique face, her eye colour, her body language. Not sure. She's just gorgeous.

Apples Oranges: she is absolutely stunning

shreya love: it looks so good!

Bassy A: I’m sure this would’ve came out amazing, but her hair look soo damaged and fried. Also the color looked messy

Karys Murphy: Facts: none of us have finished this video yet!

No Energy: she looks BADASS i love it

Sarah Milianti: Daaaaaaaamn ay! You killed it! I love it… and I love you too! ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

elizabeth manzella: Idk if it’s just me but her hair looks so much more damaged in the “afterwards” (idk maybe it’s the way they styled it). Also, in the end the hair color was very very similar to what she had started with. Idk I know if I came into the salon for a hair “transformation”, I would want to look different when I left the salon and not just cuz my hair looked damaged lol ……………. poor girl

Sierra Nowegejick: So pretty!!!!

malindarayallen: Both Ayden and the stylist are GORGEOUS!!!

Esther Faruk: Very beautiful ❤

Sarah Chandler: She resembles Miley Cyrus to me. Such a nice outcome with the hair makeover!

K: The clear shower head on the hose is honestly so cool. Sorry my comment isn’t about the hair or Ayden

Hannah Discher: I don’t love this, but she looks happy ‍♀️

Sunkissed Nae: Her curls came out so FRIZZY

Norma Earnisse: Beautiful

loveforeignaccents: Her hair looked more like it was box dyed in the after transformation... that's what my hair looked like when I used box dye before... btw, don't ever do that! Think her hair looked more natural before, so she should save her future cash and do it herself.

Aura Dawn Winchester: Red fades extremely quickly ...... She will HAVE to keep putting Red colour into her hair with each shampoo . Try the wash in wash out Red colours thatz you

Заза Биби: She is gorgeous

Kiril Velinov: Next episode:I dyed my naturally black hair strawberry blonde

mysillylittlelife: Is she wearing contacts or is this really her eye colour? In any way shes a beautiful girl and I wish her much better luck for the future The result kinda reminds me of hot topic times tho, and the hair looks frizzier than before, but as long as she's happy I guess

Chazary Gomez: She’s gorgeous she reminds me of Kimbra

Purple Bubblegum: All the best

Brit JJ: The colour came out beautiful and the stylist was very attuned to what the client wanted. I think the reason most of the comments aren’t really won over is in the styling of the curls...4:50 stylist does not seem to truly understand how to style curly hair... very sloppy and haphazard, hence the final product does not dazzle to its full potential. You cannot just do a few twirls and rake through product, it has to be intentional using the right technique.

Ra Men: Damn she‘s so pretty

shreya love: ok but omg i love the stylist's earrings

deevah: It’s alright I think the first step was a wast of time whatever color was applied to the root Didnt bump her base at all.

Delson Galasinao: Wow it's body positivity.

crystal Castillo: Unrelated but I LOVEEE her nose

D.E.B. B: Tattoos, too; Body dysmorphic disorder. She sees problems where there are none. Sad.

bodenkind: I mean she lost her job but she really could be a model ..?

viki bambi: I thought it would be more variant red ,like mandarin's red or copper red or red red

Greg Allen: am i the only one who's getting carrie fisher vibes from the stylist

Nayeli Arcos: I mean... she es stunning

Sarah: she looks like a bad boss

Chronic_Payne: Why are people talking her being bullied? Where does she say anything about being bullied?

mtERE: Damn, Ayden you are gorgeous

Janacia Nix: She’s giving 2008 Miley. I like it

Michelle Lee: Wow she is pretty

Bhawna Sharma: Please transform my hair too

Karen R.: She looks just like Kimbra

Julieta Rios: It was better before, that red makes her look old.

Dawn Hope: It's pretty. Better than boring brown

Danielle Rodgers: Came here to talk smack but ehh, they were chill.

Samantha Kluth: Does covid not exist in Chicago?

Rose McGuinness: Wow! She is gorgeous

Karys Murphy: Get your early tickets here

zepatatoes: These are some good looking contact lenses. Suits her well!

Chandler Bing: The title is a mess

The Truth: very amateur work...sorry

lara: Yikes

MrParodyMovies: Theyre contact lenses lmao

Happy Kidstv: Bad result

Vasiliy Grabovskiy: Befor was much better

Maria: You just made it so much worse

Karys Murphy: First

Brandon Vang: First aye
