I decided it was time for a change! I'm dying my hair today and sharing tips along the way! I was tired of chasing after roots. Not to mention my naturally dark brown Mexican hair loves pulling extremely strong red/orange tones and fending off "hot roots" just wasn't fun anymore. I really missed my natural roots and having healthy, shiny hair.

MORE TIPS:

My bleached blonde hair had a lot of gold tones in it, so a neutral tone dye worked well. But if you're at a platinum or cool tone blonde and going brown, you may need to add warmth back into your hair to get a balanced color (otherwise it can pull too ashy or green)

Don't forget to wear a chemical cape, old shirt or towel and put it on BEFORE getting started. I was busy fussing with the camera and forgot to put my towel on.

TODAY'S TASK:

Darken root area, so natural hair can grow out, without looking so conspicuous.

FUTURE GOAL:

Low maintenance, grown out, natural roots with some beachy highlights mid shaft to ends and maybe a few around the face to brighten overall look and complexion.

I hope you found this helpful! Thanks for watching!

xoxo,

Christine

Hey guys today, we are going to be doing my hair, no need for an introduction, we're just gon na get right down to it. So, basically, the top part of my hair, I have heavy highlights bleached out, highlights on the top of my hair. Underneath is my natural color. I don't want to touch my natural color. I want that to grow out. That'S kind of the goal of doing this is I'm tired of doing my roots, we're kind of just over the blonde, the bleached blonde. At this point, so I'm going to separate the top part of my hair and I'm going to just kind of tie back the hair that I don't want to touch and we're just going to be focusing on getting rid of some of this bleach blonde s. Up top here, the first thing I'm going to do is use a protein filler, and so I want to dampen my hair. That'S the directions. The protein filler I'm going to be using. Is this colorful neutral protein filler hairdressers, color insurance, so there's actually two sets of directions on here, I'm going to be using the directions for tinting, so the first step is to dampen my hair. So that's what I'm going to do so, let me get. Let me get this camera and focus here and we'll get started all right. Natural hair is pulled back and out of the way, I'm going to just be dampening the top of my hair here, preparing it for the protein filler, and this is just a spray bottle of water here. Alright, my hair is now damp, not dripping wet, but just kind of tell dried damp. So now I'm ready to apply my protein filler. So I transferred some into this little spray bottle here. So it would be easier to apply I'm going to put on my gloves and I'm gon na get to spraying all around the top of my hair, and I want to really saturate it. Protein filler is on, and I gently combed it through with my wide tooth comb, just ever so gently just making sure that the protein filler was, you know it distributed evenly and I'm just going to let this sit on for 20 minutes and then we'll move on To the coloring part, so I'm going to be using well a color charm, and this is in number six in 611. This is dark blonde and the developer I'm going to be using is a volume 10 developer. So we're going to do one part of the color to two parts of the developer, all right we're ready to go. I have my hair split into four sections here and I just started working on this backside section here. So I have my rat tail comb here. So I'm just slicing very thin sections, and let's do this piece here and I'm starting to die right at well, not right at the roots, because I do have a little bit of grow out that I'm trying not to go over, but just right where the bleach Kind of starts there, so I just really want to darken my roots back up again and I'm kind of just taking it through, but not all the way through to the ends, because I want a little bit of lightness still in the ends and when I take It down the shaft of the hair, I'm kind of I'm not going like all the same length, I'm just kind of like stopping it at different lengths. So it won't be just like a straight line of bleached. You you you. So it's been a total of 40 minutes and you're supposed to leave it on between 30 and 45 minutes. So I'm going to go ahead and rinse out now. I checked it at 30 minutes, but I wanted to leave it on just for a few minutes. Longer, hey guys, it's been a couple days since I did the dye job, so I just want to show you how it looks now, and I wanted to give it a couple days in between processes, because today I'm going to be going and kind of getting into The ins here, the lower part of my hair and adding some highlights because, right now it's basically dark and it kind of it fades to a light and dark again. So I'm gon na get rid of that dark on the ends there and just kind of make it look like more of that kind of ombre effect or it's sort of like grown out highlights. So that's the goal for today, but I wanted to mention really quickly. You know about the dye and how that worked out and I'm pretty happy with how how it turned out - and I wanted to mention - also that's the reason why I went with a dark blonde, even though my roots are a dark brown. I wanted to go with, you know at least a couple shades lighter than the actual goal of color that I was going for because you know bleached hair, you know, mine was very light, is very bleached and it was very porous, so it would have grabbed if I would have used like you know if I would have tried to get a dye that matched my roots like. If I got a medium brown or dark brown, it would have pulled too dark. So that's why I needed to go with a couple. You know at least a couple levels lighter, so the dark blonde worked out, perfect and yeah. Also, I should mention that I chose a neutral undertone, so this one actually has yeah it's just a straight neutral. So it's not an ash tone. If I would have gone with an ash tone, it would have been too cool because bleached out hair, it already lost all of this natural red kind of orangey tones. So that's why a neutral is a better bet than going with like a very cool sort of ashy tone. It would have turned out probably more green gray. Had I gone with mashed em so now that we're caught up on that and I've, let you know what were you doing today? Let'S go ahead and get started.

StarlingofAzerath: Love how you get right to it. Some people spend like 5 minutes talking about their hair and the process rather than showing it.

TruthSeeker: Hey, just wanted to say thanks for this video, I messed up my hair pretty bad yesterday and this (down to the same color you used) worked wonderfully, my hair is back to normal. Thank YOU.

Megan: Your hair looks amazing so far! I'm excited to see your finished results!

MellyG: Thank you so much for doing this! I was just going to do the same thing. My hair color "situation" is identical to yours, except my natural color is a bit lighter and ashy. I'm trying to go ombre too. I can't wait for part two. You are such a beautiful person inside and out. Love your channel!

Happy Lil Flowers: The dark blonde looks so classy! Can't wait for part 2!

Maria Holtz: So helpful! Your hair looks amazing! I too am trying to get back to a more natural dark blonde/brown color after going practically platinum, then golden blonde. I am going to try this. Thanks for posting!

Christine Kobzeff: Thanks girlie! I know right, it's scary going dark after years of blonde. I got so use to seeing bright blonde hair in the mirror haha. I have to keep some highlights to help brighten my complexion. But I'm so inspired by the looks of Lily Aldridge and other girls with the rooty, grown out highlights in loose beachy waves. Seems like a fun lower maintenance direction to go. xoxo Christine

Joe Dugandzic: Thank you soooo much!!  Your directions and detailed information in this video were totally spot on!!  I was able to bring my recently bleached (and golden) hair down to a darker blonde.  I did have to reduce the "development" time with the color, I just let it darken down to where I wanted to be and rinsed out.  I think it happened faster as mine was just bleached very recently.  My profile pic is not of the new hair - it's from last year, but anyways, the new hair is fantastic and I'm glad I didn't screw it up! :-)

jessie c: I can't wait to see part 2. It already looks much healthier.

Nire Noxim: You look amazing with it darker!! Can't wait for part 2.

MsSam66ok: Love it! I use vasoline around my hairline too when doing my color. I can wait to see your hilights. ~Sandra

TropicalMind1: Absolutely gorgeous! You picked a perfect shade!

blacklexusz: Love love love it!! You look amazing! This 'darker' color truly suits you.

Sofia Caeiro: I've died my hair once and I regret it so much! I don't think I'd ever do it again I love how your hair turned, MUCH better in my opinion. To be honest, I hated the brown and blonde contrast, but now I love it :D I'd love to see your hair all natural one day though :) xx

Claire B: Omg the brown looks beautiful on your skin tone!!! I just went brown from blonde a few months back, I'm still loving it!!!

Ladymom1968: This really looks classy and on you. You look so much softer and prettier. I really admire your confidence in being your na

Michelle Cendro: I have to say your hair looks great so far! It's so flattering on you!

Lilly Budge: Looks beautiful!!! Can't wait for part 2:)

ashleighjoan: i love how your hair turned out! it looks much healthier and i feel like it warms up your skin tone a bit. it looks so nice!

Christine Kobzeff: Thanks girlie!! I hear you! My best friend had her color/cut done at a salon and she cried for a week. Apparently they had different ideas of what would look best on her. Just another reason I love doing my own hair, plus I'm a little bit of a control freak lol. ;D

abunchahooey: Hi Christine! The darker blonde looks great on you! Looking forward to part 2.

Reagan Lange: This color is so great on you! I'm glad you did the change.

Mikayla Johnson: I randomly decided to go blonde one day and after one botched lightening treatment (that had to be redone) and then highlights a couple weeks later, I had a color that was beautiful, just not on me. I couldn't afford to go back and drop another hundred dollars. I went with all of the products you recommended in this video. My hair is now this stunning coffee w/cream color. It's perfect, I couldn't be happier. Thank you so much for this video! It's been a long time since I've loved my hair...

Claire D: Love it! Looks so much better. Can't wait to see the end result.

Laura Tice: Wow it really looks great already! Love the colors and tones- it really suits you

august allen: Literally in love with the new hair! It complements you so well :)

Jessica Mac: wow it turned out absolutely gorgeous! the colour is really beautiful

Theresa Stiles: OMG it looks amazing!!! So healthy! and you seriously look 10 years younger.

Michelle Burk: Its looks so good so far, can't wait to see the end result !! :)

Lala Land: I loved the video! I really want to see the final result but right now you look absolutely beautiful with this hair, younger and more elegant :)

MariniSol: The darker color looks great on you ! Makes you look younger! Very pretty:)

Sammy28!!: Wow. This hair makes you look even more incredible!

The Beauty Journals: It looks really nice I love the contrast, also on a side note I'm loving all your 2013 goals you've encouraged me to eat healthier and I feel so much better for it. X

Persia22: Hi!  Have you ever tried henna on your hair?  It's so much healthier than chemically processing your hair.. I think a dark brown would look great on you:))  I prefer the lighter shade of blonde like platinum.   I used to get platinum highlights it was almost white & I stopped because it does too much damage to your hair and I had to cut the length off from split ends.

Katie P: I am getting bayalage highlights Monday ! Can't wait. Your hair looks so healthy.

Katie Hart: This looks really great on you and really compliments your skin more.

Anais Andersohn: Your blog has helped so much. I'm doing the ombre also, just need the toner. Thank you!

Courtney Paige: looks so good! i'm thinking of doing something similar. i'm so sick of my blonde highlights too! thanks for the tips!

Christine Kobzeff: Great question! I look at the skin tone, typically warm skin tones blend beautifully with warm hair tones (think; golden, champagne blonde, honey, caramel, warm brown, chestnut, auburn, etc.) Cool hair tones tend to compliment cool skin tones really well (think; ash tones, light ash blonde, ash brown, cool beige blonde, platinum, etc.) We also tend to look great in the hair color we had as children. :)

natalie075: Looks lovely! I feel so "free" since I stopped having my hair colored ! :). Xoxo ~Natalie

68hilaire: Your hair looks great! And I want to say THANK YOU, for using a wide tooth comb on your wet hair. I see too often people using brushes on their wet hair. Not good. It pulls on the hair shaft and can break the hair. I have used a plastic hair pick for the last 24 years (I have very fine straight hair) I don't even own a brush. The last paddle brush I had was about 15 years ago. - Again I love the new color.

Shazvana: Looks great!! It's always nice to have a change...they say a change is as good as a holiday and sometimes this is true. Look forward to part 2:)

pixiholly: I love it! It complements your skin tone beautifully, and it's a lovely subtle mix of colours.

GKJ: WOW. Your hair looks amazing. I prefer this look to what you had going on before. I like the natural look :D That's my thing! I can only imagine how hard it must have been to maintain your previous look. Retouching the roots and what not. I've been wanting to go lighter but I don't think I have the money to get my hair done so often.

Jan Reichard: I really like it, can't wait to see the finished result!!!

Lynn: very exciting, The color looks so pretty in Part 1, cannot wait to see Part 2.

QTinSC8585: I had bleached blonde hair and used Wella's 8N-8.0 & it turned out to be a gorgeous blonde color. I decided to use a box color (I know, big mistake!) of "light ash blonde", & I know the rule with ASH colors, but it was my mistake to rush & grabbed the wrong color. I tried to fix my hair afterwards with a medium blonde (which is a shade darker) & my hair has this weird greyish tint to it & orangey-colored "hot roots" - how can I fix it? Can I use the color you used? & which developer do I use?

Natalie: This color looks amazing on you. Please never go back to the light blond again, you looked good before but you look stunning now!!!!

Fleurdelis22: Love it! Can't wait to see part 2:)

K A K: I really love it. My hair always comes out to dark. So your suggestion to choose lighter than what you want is great. I might try to do it myself. You look beautiful.

JustKseniya: The hair looks really good! I love it more than bleached! :)

califoreverxox: This color is amazing on you!! I love it I think its perfect!

Glenonica1: This really shows a different complexion than the blond, it really looks great. See ya in part 2

coralpetals: HI Christine. Your hair looks amazing as is; it really compliments your eye color. I guess it's only going to get even better once you are done with it. : )

Kelly McKelly: Good job so far! You're so talented. I'd be terrified to see what I would end up with if I did my ow!

Askelt: Thank you so much for this video and the tips are a lifesaver!!

lmBaker: Your new hair color looks stunning on you!

April: Wow! your hair came out absolutely gorgeous!! I like think this color brings out your natural beauty more than the blonde did :)

BSLx: Amazing how your dark hair can lift so well with just a 10 vol! I always thought that 10 vol wasn't strong enough to lift dark brown hair colour!! Amazing!

emdelity: Yes! I am so glad to see you make a change! I just felt that the blonde on top/dark underneath was so dated and kinda made you look older. I always thought that the ombre look would look so good on you! It already looks better, can't wait to see the rest!!! Yay!

Brittany Nicole: Love the dark blonde so much better! Looks great(:

Kris10ReneeRN: Love it, can't wait to see the end results

coccinellerebelle: You look absolutly amazing! It's natural, sexy, complements your skintone and your eyes♥

Maggie: You look great! I know this video isn't showing the finished product, but I'm loving it!

Kris B: Wow! Your hair looks awesome in this video!! You look so much more rich and it looks so healthy!! Love this on you!

minniemouse3503: LOOKS AMAZING OMGG!! I wasnt sure how it would turn out but you look stunning with this hair color :)))) xxxxxx

Therese Sorrell: Christine you look so pretty with darker blond and it shows off your delicate futures, gorgeous.

T Hutasingh: oh my goodness, i can never dye my hair myself! ur so good at it!

Good4UrSeoul: Love the new color...simliar to mine but I just added a few highlights to frame my face. I use a toorthbrush to distribute the color when trying to darken under thehighlights..works awesome too.

Bethany EngBlade: Love it! That color looks really good on you!

Christine Kobzeff: Good for Wayne, I like him a lot. Regarding essential oils, some people love them and some don't. Essential oils have been used for thousands of years and in my experience have worked wonders for my skin. Lavender in particular is one of my favorites, it reduces my redness and blemishes dramatically. I personally prefer to listen to my own body, do my own research and make my own decisions. But I would never tell others to do anything or use anything they're not 100% comfortable with using. :)

Shawna Whiting: Wow, you did an amazing job on your hair! :0)

Kathryn Murphy: Oh my gosh. While I love your bleach blonde hair, this caramel-y color is absolutely gorgeous!!!

shinya9292: Love the new color! Looks super great on you! :)

Molly: Looks great! You did a very good job.

Paula B: I am going to try the same thing with my hair.  Could I just ask about the protein filler.  Do you wash it out and then dye the hair, or do you add the colour on top of the protein filler?

Irene Mead: Oh my lord your hair looks BEAUTIFUL!!! It looks amazing!!!

Thedirtygardenhoe: Beautiful! Cant wait for part 2 :)

Claire Hardy: Looks so good on you darker.. good job on doing it at home. xx Claire

rowrow27: I love it, looks very natural. Beautiful

Jana Christner: You look beautiful!I had blond highlights for many years. My natural color is ash blonde&I was never happy with it.But I was sick of the roots showing so fast&most of all I didn´t want to keep on putting all these chemicals onto my hair&into my body.I changed my diet&I try to use natural skin care, ect. So it seemed wrong to keep on dying my hair.I actually really enjoy my natural hair now even if it is not my favorite color.Love all the changes you´ve been making. You R my favorite now on UTube!

gagadavid14: i cant tell you how happy i am you used professional color and not boxed! looks great!

ohyourelovely: ive been waiting to see you with this coloring and youre absolutely gorgeous!!!

Tammi McAtee: oh i am loving it so far! Your hair is looking amazing already! :)

Kat: LOVING the new hair!!!!! Looks awesome on you!! <3

TheBeautyPuzzle: I love it! It looks lovely on you.

iml2492: would it be better to use a red protein filler instead of a neutral protein filler on platinum blonde hair? I want to color my hair a dark blonde (6N) but i heard you have to put the red back in it. Or is this only when you're going brown?

fashingrl: Great job Christine - I like the new color! I just did a very similar thing myself - you have better skills than I do though ;) I will say I notice that a lot of gals are in the same boat and going darker and seem to be tiring of the root touch up and bleaching process. It is refreshing! :) :)

LisaLisaD1: Love it! You are so brave--you did a great job! xoxo Lisa

Marie-Andrée Loubert: Wow!! you did a great job. Cant wait to see the rest :)

delacotta360: Very nice Christine! You're going to be so happy to get back to your natural hair (I did that several years ago and am salty now LOL). I had been "streaking" it, and went cold turkey quit! Wonder if you'll be changing your makeup colors (eyes/lips) to go w/ the new coloring? Thanks for doing this with us; very interesting. xoxo Susan P.S. I just tagged you in my last video. ; )

Ayurveda By Lina: Love love love the color on you. sooooo beautiful and sophisticated!

Just A Murmur: Can't wait to see the end result! Exciting!! xoxo Robyn :)

Erin Turner: Your hair looks fantastic!!!!

TheNaylababy: OH MY GOSH... I LOVE IT! You just look so good with the darker tones in your hair.. Your pretty skin and eye color is just perfect with that darker look.. it looks amazing.. You look so soft and beautiful. If you wanna go darker I am 100% behind you. I think you would look like a exotic beach bunny girl.. LOVE this so much!
