Hairstyles for Older Women - How to Choose the Perfect Style for You | Denise McAdam

Exciting hairstyles for older women are everywhere. In fact, these days, women over 60 are trying every possible style. I know women who have colored their hair pink, red, black and every color in-between. Even the women who are sticking with more traditional colors, or going grey gracefully, are experimenting with new styles and hair products.

#HairstylesforOlderWomen #PerfectStyleforYou #SixtyAndMe

Hi everyone - this is Margaret Manning, was 60 and me. This is the place where women over 60 come to be inspired. My guest today is Denis macadam. Denis is one of Britain's top hairdressers for the last 40 years. She has been working with celebrities and royalty and just has so much experience with hair of all kinds. Lisa'S work with some of the world's most famous photographers and her people that have entrusted their their hair to her include people like Grace, Kelly and Judy Collins, Cindy Crawford lots of people that you would know, and I'm just so thrilled to have you with us today. Denise welcome yeah you're this excellent. Thank you to 60 me inviting me shot you thank you. Well, you know we have a community of about 100,000 women now over 60 and we talk about hair a lot. We talked about wanting to look great in our 60s. A lot you know it's this myth that women over 60 don't want to look good. So here, of course, is important and we've talked in a separate video about challenges like thinning, hair and gray hair. But what we've got with what we have is what we have. So how do we decide what the best hair style is for us from all your years of experience, give us some questions that we need to ask ourselves when deciding short, long, medium, bangs, no bangs, yeah, absolutely and in short and long and medium meaning, is something That and we all have a different concept of short long. I would consider my hair quite long right now. Someone else would consider it short. You see so it's it's, so a good great thing to do just to get over. The kind of psychology of where you see yourself is when something when I hear dry serve says you know if somebody said bring a picture and the hairdresser thinks I'm far too professional for venture. It'S not a picture about just the style you want it's. It helps to interpret it what you're actually seeing, because even you say I want to be. You know a lot shorter or a lot whatever and suddenly you're you're way up here and you actually wants to be here. So if you take a style or something on the lows, not the Paris, you want to look like blank out the face. You'Re, not wanting to look like them. You know you don't want to look like. Can God Cindy Crawford, we're never gon na, definitely be a young pop star right now. Did you love the hairstyle? It'S not. You want to look like them, but that's kind of bland, yes by its just interpreting what you call short and long. No, if you look at Jerry Hall, she's about to brief 60 now, she might consider her here quite short right now from what it used to be, but in our world it's quite long. Yes and her world is short, and you know so. It'S actually interpreting here here, you know and then the face shape and also the fact that your skin changes your face, shape, changes, you know your cheekbones change or everything has changed. Your eyes are slightly different, so you know when people I've seen in the past, people have brought in a picture of themselves thirty years ago. I want my hair to be like that again and you're, and it's sort of like oh okay right. Well, we can we, we can't that, because at that point sometimes they're, looking at how they're used to loot this, it's like me, looking at a picture of myself thinking, I could fit that sort of as fat in that picture that shoe. In fact, I was very thin, which I could be like that, no, so it's in so you need to take it's that understanding, but another vital thing is time: how much time have you got? You know, because you can go to the hairdresser's and they create this fabulous hairstyle, and you can't recreate it in the time that you've got a home. I mean at the moment you see let you get chunky bobs, but they've got weaves in it and their curls and they're great shapes and they look great on the telly and the hairdresser blow-dries you're here. So at this you might blue a dry. It cool with a round like ght brush all like this and you've got these lovely little things happening and you leave there feeling quite young, quite modelling and then you're at home. Faced with you, your hairdryer and the brush rough in a mirror, it's not going to happen! Yeah right and you're going to end up looking actually order. So you really want a hairstyle that you can do. You can create I'll receive. You can't blow dry your hair, really quite half good in 12 minutes something's gone wrong in the styling because you need to you know: you're all busy women do everybody's busy. We may have automatic, wash machines and tumble dryers, and this satin the other but you're all busy timers of an essence, and you want to look great and look fabulous, but you don't want to take a lackey and earn half in the morning. Do you hear me? Oh yeah you're gon na make up chick I'm going to pick up dress, so you just want to be fast. You want their stuff to work and it should it should be built to blow dry easily and the hairdresser should show you how to do it. You want product that works product that keeps it in product, it's the volume, but styling is it's really have a kind of you if you've gone to somebody new to do consultations, don't feel bad about it. Take pictures talk about the look blank the face, so so he doesn't think you want to look like that person and just talk about length and understand during time blow-dry what you call short at the back, but you know it's. I think one of the main things, even if you wear a bulb or a fringe, is just to be a little bit softer slightly softer. So you might slice the fringe a little bit more. You might put a few layers and you might have it where the it's got a bit more volume or even actually your view, and even if you wear your hair up, you want to be able to just put your hair up in a second. You want to kind of just be able to throw up put on some lovely long earrings and you should look absolutely gorgeous. That should work great whatever you do. You own, like my head with my hair. I'D probably look ridiculous, but no, you might not know fabulous. It is truly be able to. You won't be able to compare when you come home and you're going out, and I don't mean just the local pub to something nice that if you've done that blow dry in the morning, you know use a dry. Shampoo you've got batiste, which is a great meat which is an original dry shampoo chlorine. I'Ve got a fabulous new one and you want to spritz that entry just to give that just that extra volume put a button that just gives it a little bit of. As we see in the hairdressing world Juche, it's a little bit is used to the style. I liked it. In the day we were talking - and you were saying you got to wake up your hair, absolutely as use those products that are great. So let's talk about products for a second, because I know um well, let's just review. You were saying that your face shape is important. The time you want to spend on your hair, I think, being real just being realistic about how much time you want to invest in in yours, in your hair, getting a good cut that will easily blow-dry into the shape that you want to get is those are The I mean short and long, I think you said, are relative, so you have to look at your face shape and you know how gravity is affected. You yeah, and so whether you got a good I mean I have a pretty good brown. You can amazing foreheads. So I was like you, maybe I shouldn't need to wear bangs, but I like bangs, so but it's looking at your face as part of the whole thing. So that's great, but then we're talk about some product that you think would help us to keep those shapes in place. Pop shampoo or conditioner that you like yeah some great, I mean some great shampoos out there and I mentioned before Jim joy cool. I mean they call it curl nourished, it's actually, it's a strange world, curly hair. We try, but it's and the conditioner and it's um is the sulfate free, which is quite interesting to some people right since American products, as well, based in the UK its world nearly like it is a super product. This is joyful, soreness, Alan, its revitalizing. The great thing about the joyful curl for me and but even if you you've not got Curtis, it says curl, but you know I wouldn't take that into too much consideration because it's it's a nourishing shampoo cuz we made too much. But the great thing about it is is that it doesn't get used. It really stops the static. So if you've got a hairstyle that like, for example, even like my like a bob, you need something like that really to keep it smooth. I mean, I suppose, even if you have a little thinking about styling, I mean you've got two basic options. It seems like in here it cuts. You'Ve got a but um like a bob where it's like this and straight or you've got layered. You know liquid, like you, said, an angular bang or something like jane fonda. You know where you've got that kind of Jaggi look um and i was it was interesting. You just seen it, but the bob, my hair bobbed believer know. If i wear it curly it. You can see up your pop yeah as you see it now. It'S actually kind of doing different things. What'S hitting your shoulder for one thing: isn't it which which causes it to flip up. I guess yeah. All I do is with the bulb is a slice in at the front. It'S lightly sliced. So it's it just slicing into its. It is softening different shapes. You know just kind of softens. If I look at you now, you know you could look nice with slice. A little bit, maybe a bit more volume on the top tiny bit tiny picture and just looking in are you amazing, eyebrow, a great point it, but maybe the friend should be slightly more layered a little bit more slightly volume because I cut I cut it myself. Yep, that's fine! That'S good! You know I there couple of articles and cutting your own fringe. I'M not also. Do you come to para midi? That makes dance because I mean I do it as well, but it sort of does this too much? You don't want that. Look, the great thing is saying: there's a dog park and what he's making his car or her comments about Liberata eating. Here we were there all this other products you wanted to talk about, though, that helps you to keep your hairstyle beautifully. You'Ve talked about dry, shampoo and and in the joy, Co, raineesha and jaebum and joy cos great range, which judges thinks being a dry. Shampoos are super up. You they've been around for years here, dresses have been and to them no they're, no they've kind of realize. It'S not just about a dry shampoo, it's not just about something that relieves the oil or cleans our here, but it does put volume in you've. Got no more products, no got a dry shampoo, you, but batiste, which been around for years. Chlorine, as I said before, but when you spritz it spritz it in underneath Hamlet right in another areas back here in the in the nape of the neck, just to give a boost, put it in and then just kind of late. It'S often in for a minute or two, so it disperses soothing it really heavy okay get more volume straightaway, and then you get luxurious products like bowel mean, which is stunning. In fact bowel mean this is a moisturizing shampoo. It'S um, I said with the be bit bombing, if I'll mean nearly ALM AI any and they do a brilliant mousse now missus ago, is a it's a funny product cuz. I have it very high angles: grant um. So I'm not a person. The best lover of a mousse - but I found recently with mousse, is like this that if I put them more green, he just keep on the lengths and ends it's fine. I just don't go near the roots with it, I'm much more of a setting spray girl. But for me personally I would go to the house without hairspray, because I love HIV but lock in your spring, because the thing with hairspray you want your hair to be. It'S a veal, so it should be feeling the here completely veiling it. So you can see it still. It'S not it's not feeling it as an action feel the sheet. You can see it just kind of stays. So it's what it's green is you just spend 10 minutes blow-drying and it's a dab of day or a humid day, because your hair spy nourish you've got older. It says hello to the humid equals hi coming at me. It is like them, so here's me don't think hair spray is just keeping the styling. Think of hairspray is that veal? The starts that moisture getting in faffing. You any recommendation straight here. If i can see with your hair that moisture loves it. I bet it. You know it yeah so does hairspray, don't think of hairspray as as as solid here, not moving like these old out ferrets think of it as something as a veal. One recommend e sorry for interrupting any any recommendations. I love joy, cool, I love Ellen. Eight are still Ellen, eight on the right, mmm-hmm or ll Annette, I'm very fond of some of the Wella or small, and things like that so well, it will do just a few you've got about with you. It is attached you can do with hairspray, which you can just spray. It very lightly test, perfume spray on the back of your hand and rub it for a minute or two, and as you rub it, you start to feel a little stick. That means yes and then keep rubbing and then, when it was smooth and lovely and just nice shiny, no stick there at all. It'S not sticky at all. You know: you've got nice history. This stays sticky. Well, what we'll put some of your nail mystic? It'S throw it away, no go away, not staying in my bag. Well, this was so interesting. I mean, as you know you I know you know area and pool and area, and I took a lot about makeup and of course, makeup is part of this whole thing to that makeup, and you know your skin tone changes. Some makeup can help enhance your hair too, but we took a lot about this. You know that you know there's so much choice with products you and that's why I love having an expert like you giving us your. You know your one or two suggestions, even though people probably are sitting at home going. Oh, I love my this product or that product it's great, keep using it, but Tom yeah. It'S just my certainty and I always say trying new clothes. Also, you know you should have products, you know in the sense of when you were younger. You might have a different time in the month. So, as far as I'm concerned, there should be two shampoos as you get older, it's a similar thing that you don't want to. Maybe you might change your shampoo occasion, you just as you're here was getting to use into it or if your hair is colored on the day that you color your hair. Please use a color saver because you've just spent a fortune. People think you knows a lot of people in our age group and on they think it's all nonsense, we're the we're the critics of it all, that's rubbish. It doesn't make any difference. It does trust me. You'Ve just spent a hundred pounds 200 pounds of color. The cuticle is still slightly open. So when you go to wash your hair next time, the color is fading and releasing. If you sick, colors saver shampoo, it keeps the cuticle clothes. So when you say color favor you mean so you mean a shampoo that says for colored hair. Yes, absolutely so it doesn't have to be a specific kind of color saver. It just has to be one, that's that's developed is it says for color tint and it says it's a good manufactory. Okay should be a color saver as well, but use it. Maybe six washes after your colors just done and then go back to your other shampoo because it might be more expensive. You know let go alone, it's a luxury. Joy cool is a is a stunning shampoo and then I might go between. I use in my bathroom right now I have Dolf a loved off in my swimming bag. I have dove because I find it the easiest to manage and enjoy cause my luxury. I blow dried, my hair, I washed it enjoyable to D and then bowel means. My very much luxury, but that's for the bathroom because it looks really small, so it's kind of safe. I ever use it it's on the champion. It is like makeup for here yeah, and it really is - and I think if you apply it with the same attitude as makeup, you've got a lot more out of your products. Okay, so I think we've covered styling and taking care of style hair which antastic and yeah just enjoy it. I think your advice is very much like carry on with makeup just enjoy it embrace it have fun with it. It'S just after it's a joy and it's great to have you here Denise. Thank you so much and I really wish you well. Thank you. So much

Hans Becker: “Age is irrelevant.  With long hair, a woman’s beauty is timeless.”

leah smith: I loved the video, and the information given in it

Beth Purvis: Your videos are very educational. Thank you. I don’t know what to do with my hair. I am 64 years old with very little grey. My hair has always been thin however I have a lot of it. Yes, it is thinning as I age...I still have a lot of hair. It has gotten curly as I age which is shocking to me. I do straighten it. I’ve lost confidence in hairdressers in my town so I’ve not cut, only trimmed in the last 2.5 years. The length is right at my breast bone. I have a round face with somewhat high cheek bones, strong eyebrows, brown eyes and light brown hair with bangs and a strong widows peak. Hope this sort of describes what my hair and face look like. Since I have longish Hair, I have the advantage of staying long or medium or short. After all this, I’m asking what type of hair style would be the best for me? Thanks for reading and I look forward to your help. My email address is [email protected] if you wish to use that avenue of communication. I’m really at a loss. My dream is to go to England or New York to have my hair styled by a real professional. Thank you. Beth P

Maryland U.S.: I always grow my hair out...bob length, show my stylist a layered bob, I always end up with a pixie!!!! WHY, I ask? She cuts it into a layered bob, and then goes back over it to fine tune it, and it ends up sooooo short. It's maddening. Stylists these days just don't listen, and they tend to give you everyone else's style. The first time she cut my hair, she gave me curls with a thin curling iron....I hated it. I wanted the back to be tapered at the nape....NOPE....it was cut straight across and short.

Ande Ycal: My daughter made an appointment for me to have my hair colored in April (next month) and I want a color that blends with the gray but, I am fair so I don't know if I will look washed out. I have medium length hair and I have no idea what style to choose.

Debra Gertz: Their hair does not look great, so I don’t think I will take their advice.

Little Lulu: you look very nice with bangs

karen catalano: How can you get and style your hair when you have Carlie's I have one on the right side in front. And another on the crown I have such a hard time doing my hair. And also it is very thin. Any ideas

Patricia Beetschen: Joy curl? I can’t understand the name of the products

Jo Ann Good: Good Tips

EuphemiaGrubb: Re., colour saver - my roots need done within 3/4 weeks. So no need for any 'saver'.

Linda Pedigo: video was misnamed, should be too much talk about products, none about styles

Paula Hayden: Hate these videos with split screen. Very distracting one person nodding all the time.

Valerie Ginesin: Bangs become you
