Hi guys it's lana here, welcome back to lana's summer summer time in today's video i want to show you some protective hairstyles for curly hair. So in my last video we were talking about hair growth. I was showing some hair growth tips and hair growth habits to help you get long, healthy, curly, hair, and in that video i touched on protective hairstyles. A lot of you commented and asked me to show you some. So that's what i'm doing. Let'S just start at the start, what is the point of a protective hairstyle? Well, a protective hairstyle is exactly what it says on the tin, it's designed to protect your hair, and it involves tucking away the ends of your hair and tucking away. Most of your strands to make sure that they're not getting damaged by your clothes or by the sun, the wind, the rain, the ice they're going to be low manipulation, so there's not gon na be any brushing tugging pulling. Also there's not gon na, be any heat. Think of being really gentle on your hair and literally just trying to protect it. That is a protective hairstyle and the reason why we do. That is because we want our hair to be as healthy as possible, and a lot of hairstyles are just not protective and can actually be quite damaging. So that's not good. That'S not going to help. You grow your hair. I mean you could do it if you want. I do a lot of hairstyles that aren't really protective, but you know a lot of hairstyles that we've come to know as being protective hairstyles and not actually very protective at all. And that's just because of the technique that we use in the way that we do. It, for example, braids braids, should be super protective you're tucking your hair away. But if you're going to tie your hair really tight, if you're going to braid it really tight and it's giving you a headache and it's like pulling pieces of hair out. That'S obviously not very protective, it's damaging your hair. It'S literally pulling your hair out same for things like wigs. If you are going to wear a wig, that's great! That'S amazing! That is so protective for your hair. A lot of people see a lot of hair growth with wigs. However, if you are gon na cornrow, your hair up underneath the wig and not nourish your scalp for weeks and weeks at a time, then your scalp can become malnourished and unhealthy, and that's not good and also, if you're gon na be gluing the wig down at The front you can end up losing your edges and that's not good. Either lots of hairstyles can be protective. It just depends on how you do it like wash and gos, and things they're not really protective, because they rub on our clothes and they can get really tangled. So good protective hairstyles will prevent tangles they'll, prevent rubbing they'll, prevent sun damage and all of that stuff. I also want to say that if you are going to be doing one of those long-term protective hairstyles, you definitely want to make sure that you're doing that on conditioned and nourished hair. Don'T wait until the end of your wash cycle and then braid up, because by that time your hair is already going to be dry. It'S not going to enjoy being in that protective hairstyle. So you want to make sure that your hair is always nourished while it's in a long-term protective hairstyle. So with that being said, i want to show you some short-term day-to-day curly protective hairstyles. These are not going to be long-term they're, not braids, they're, not twists. It'S not we're not going to cornrow up and put our hair under a wig, or anything like that protective hairstyles that you can wear day to day. You know if you want to go to school, you want to go to work and you just want to usually protect your hair. That'S all. These are definitely great hairstyles for the wintertime. So i would do my hair like this, maybe if it was just too cold or if i have washed my hair and it's all healthy and everything, but i don't really want to leave it out like this. Just to be rubbing on my clothes and getting tangled. I actually have some water and i have some nourishing oil right here, which i might use in some of the hairstyles, i'm not sure. Yet. Okay, i'm just going to jump into a voiceover. Remember you can pause and rewind any parts of the hairstyles that you need to also remember to thumbs up this video if you like it and subscribe and turn on your notifications. If you want to see any more videos from me, also leave me a comment and tell me which one of these is your favorite hairstyle and let's get into it, hi guys. So i actually have a bit of a cold right now, so just gon na have to do with my voice sounding a little bit funky. But let's start with hair cell number one. So i'm gon na separate my hair into two sections by splitting it down the middle, i'm not too focused on getting a really straight parting. I'M kind of just letting my hair do what it wants to do and i'm just being really gentle when i separate it and then i'm also going to separate a fringe and then i have two sections: i'm going to tie them into bunches at the back using Satin scrunchies because satin is so much softer and gentler on our hair than anything else, and then i'm going to wrap those into buns, really gently and pin them into place with a bobby pin. So splitting your hair into two like this, really minimizes the amount of tangles you're going to get, because i think anyone with curly hair knows the struggle of having tangles at the back whenever you've tied your hair or put it into a bun all at once. And then, with these pieces that we've left out, i am going to braid those up, i'm going to plait them and that's just going to help to protect those. I can protect those strands and protect those ends by braiding them up and tucking them away, and that's also what the buns do for the rest of our hair. We tuck away our ends. It'S nice and protective. We were gentle on our hair. Hair is protected from the elements it's protected from tangles and i just thought this was kind of a cute little hairstyle. That incorporates a lot of protective elements. Let me know what you think for this next hairstyle i'm going to take a satin scrunchie and then i'm going to shift and shimmy all of my hair to the back and up just to make sure it all knows where it's going. So it doesn't overlap and get tangled, and then i'm going to tie that quite high with the satin scrunchie and all of my accessories by the way are from my brand, which is hedgy, hair i'll leave them linked in the description box and then sometimes when i Have my hair tied up tight like this, i can feel it kind of pinching on my edges, so i'm gon na pull out that hair. You can see it's already shorter, like i usually call this baby hair but, let's be honest, that's probably breakage from high ponies. So i don't want any more breakage, so i'm just gon na pull that out and let it live its best life, i'm spraying it with water and i'm wrapping it around my finger so that i get these cute little curls. They look quite ethereal. I think with certain hairstyles, so i'm going to leave them like that, i'm taking a satin scarf, i'm tying that around my ponytail and i'm raveling the ponytail up into a bun and then i'm tying that satin scarf, and it makes this really beautiful voluminous bun that I'M obsessed with my hair is protected from the elements it's protected from damage. It was low manipulation and it looks good, i think so anyway, for the next hairstyle, i'm letting my hair down again and then i'm taking an edge brush, because i just want to smooth my hair back into a low ponytail, i'm using a satin scrunchie again and I'M not going to tie my hair all the way through i'm just going to leave it halfway through like this, but then you can see that my ends are still kind of out, so i'm actually going to protect those with a satin scarf. So i'm going to wrap the scarf all the way around my hair and my ends and that's gon na help prevent any damage to the ends of my hair and that's how it looks. You could totally leave it like that. But i did just decide to go in and smooth out my edges a little bit more. You don't have to do that because when you apply thick products to your edges, that can kind of smother your scalp a little bit and could even lead to damage if you're doing that too often. So maybe i shouldn't have done that in this video, but i did like the look of the smooth down edges for the next hairstyle i'm going to do a bit of a loose bun down at the back at the nape of my neck. If you've got shorter hair, you probably don't need it to be in a bun at all, but the thing is is that i just want to keep it loose to preserve that curl definition and not get any kinks or anything, and then i'm taking a satin hair Scarf same one, as in the previous look, i'm going to tie that down at the nape of my neck and then i can slide it back slightly and then tie that around the bun at the top and the bottom. And that's that it's actually really easy. And if you do have trouble with this sliding back, then just make sure that you start off with it really far forward and don't slide it back until you've already tied it around the back of your head. The next protective hairstyle is not a bun yay, so i'm gon na gently separate my hair into two sections and then i'm gon na lightly twist them in the same direction, so individually, they're being twisted in the same direction and then in the opposite direction. I'M going to twist them around each other and if that doesn't make sense, just watch carefully see they're being twisted the same direction individually and in the opposite direction: they're going around each other. So this is a two-strand twist and i prefer this over a braid as a protective hairstyle, because with a braid you'd have to separate your hair into three sections, which opens the doors for slightly more tangles. So then, i'm just gon na tie that off with a satin scrunchie and leave the ends looped in so that they're not exposed, and that's the look i really like it. I think it's perfect for a winter evening stroll to protect your hair from the cold. Let me know what you think: okay guys, that is everything from me. Thank you so much for watching this video and spending this little bit of time with me. I really hope that you enjoyed it. I really hope that you got some inspiration from the hairstyles and i really hope that you're enjoying the sunshine we have had sun for two straight days here in the uk. I am absolutely buzzing about it literally so excited i have not seen the sun in months. I hope that you have an amazing week and i'll see you next time. Bye, like you,

A.M.J: These are lovely! Actually I'm the opposite, buns have always damaged my fine hair and made my scalp so sensitive, so braids have been my friend :( But I'll give these a try!

Yumna Barendse: Love the incorporation of satin accessories with the buns!

Marleen G.: Style 2, without a doubt; such a great idea bunching it up with the satin scarf! And I like that it's not your "standard" protective styles, like tight cornrow braiding and tiny braids, because IMHO those tug and pull and are more mechanical damage than anything protective.

Danielle M: Loved it! My favorite was the pigtail buns or the low bun. You always look so elegant. Also your curls are my goals!!

yericka rose: Great video girlie! I was literally showing my mum your video and we couldn't get over how pretty your hair is! Can you do a video on how you have it so soft and easily manageable while maintaining your definition when you have time?

These hairstyles are really pretty and I’ll definitely be using them.

Jordan Rogers: I really liked the first one. I do that one all the time for school

Claudia Warner: For those living in winter climates it's impossible to wear a hat with the updos..or drive a car with a 7 foot high bun .I'm a grandma so braids save my long hair sleeping..The days of the European booboshkas or hair scarves tied under the chin were the best protection.
