Shadow Root Toning And Color Melting

this is a video on how i shadow root and tone my clients for a seamless blend!

For shadow roots, I like to use red can shade EQ, I'm using 66 and 7 and all equal parts for her formula here. As you can see, I'm working up through her head grabbing thin sections and combing everything down smoothly with the comb and then I'm applying the toner at the root of her scalp only about an inch down. You can bring this down further if someone has not lifted evenly or you have some splotchiness that you want to cover or even out you can bring your shadow root down lower or if they like, the look where their roots are a little bit darker and their Lower and then they get lighter on the bottom. This is another way that you would put the shadow root to a lower point, but for her I'm actually going to be using three different colors. So I'm starting off with the darkest tone. That'S right up at the root only an inch down and then I'm going to use another color. That'S a little bit lighter than this. It'S going to be applied right underneath that color and then I'm going to finish off with a lighter toner all throughout the ends of her hair. That will tone her blond, I'm just working from the bottom, all the way up to the top of the head and the section for this is pretty much wherever they part their hair and I section from the top of their head down to their ears, and I Go ahead and start with the back first and then I follow up with the sides now, when you're working on the sides you're doing the same thing. The only difference is that you want to keep the highlight that's by their face, their hairline higher. So when you're bringing your shadow root down, you want to bring it down in an angle. So it's not completely a horizontal line. It'S going to be slightly a diagonal so that it transitions into the back of her hair, and this is also going to allow her to have a more pronounced face frame. That'S going to keep her hair brighter in the front and I turn the brush vertically to make the transition of the shadow root not so far, Kersh, because, if you're applying it horizontally, you're going to have a little bit more of that pronounced line. So if you turn the brush vertically it'll help so that you can blur out and kind of bring the shadow root up and down throughout the hair so that it breaks up that line now. I also want to remind you guys that her hair is not toned. Yet so that's why it looks kind of yellowish blonde, but, as you see here, it looks pretty intense. You probably would freak out and be like. Oh my god, it looks like she's going to have a dark black line on the top of her head. Don'T freak out it just when it oxidizes. It looks like it's a little bit darker, but I promise you when you rinse it. It'S really not dark at all. So here I'm applying my second color. This is more of a color mount skill, so she has a darker toner at her root, which is the shadowing of the root. Now I'm working into another color that sits right below that shadow root and it's pretty much going to transition from the darker root tone to a little bit lighter of a color and then I'm leaving the ends out. So I am not touching the ends at all. That'S why I'm applying it really softly and kind of working some of this toner downwards in a vertical motion, but leaving the ends out, because I do not want this middle tone to darken her ends. So as you can see the way that I'm applying it. I have my hand, underneath that is going to give me some stability there and then, as I'm working the product in it's really easy to just kind of squeeze and rub into the hair and once again, I'm using redkin shades here. This toner is a level 7. So at her root I mainly have a level 6 and now I'm working to a level 7 8. I believe here I used a 7 P and a 7 N and as I'm at the top of her head, I'm just going to lay it over the foil. The foil is just helping, so it doesn't sit on top of the previous section, because I don't want it to ruin the pattern I'm creating here and you just want to work really softly as you're applying this toner. You don't want to get too recive. You want to make sure that, where you're playing it is where you want to see it and to be very honest with you guys when you do shadow roots and you do like a middle tone, it makes that transition so smooth. So, if you're afraid of it. Looking too contrasty because the ends are really blond. This is a good way to put a middle color in there so that you can soften that transition from it going to a darker root to really bright ends, as I'm working to the front of her hair notice. That everything is pulled back away from her face and the same concept applies here where you want to keep her hairline, the most lightest point. So it still is applied in a slight diagonal and you want to make sure that that middle toner does not sit lower than the hair. That'S behind her hairline. So once again, her hairline needs to be at the highest point. So the shadow root is going to sit about an inch from the regrowth and then your middle toner is going to sit right below that and it's going to sit higher than the back now, I'm applying the third toner here. This is going to be her for her blonde. This is a level 9, so this is a nine v9p and some clear and I'm just applying it to the rest of the ends of her hair and the greatest thing about shades eq is the consistency of it. Is so thin and gel like that, when you do apply it, you can mesh this all together, don't worry about it, touching the previous toner. That'S what makes it have. This melting effect that it's blurred is there okay to overlap with each other, so the total processing time that I leave this in is usually about five minutes, maybe ten if they need more counselling, but as you can see, look how beautiful this is like it is. So natural looking and what shadow root does that pretty much darkens the root of that highlight a little bit more so that it looks more natural and all the bright pieces of blonde is all in the ends and around the face. So you get that beautiful face frame. Well, that's pretty much it! I hope you guys enjoyed this video and I will see you guys soon. Bye,

julie lucas: Being a professional , you make the application look so easy, I'm going to have a go , as the result looked gorgeous and so fresh and natural. Also I noticed your model looked to have dry damaged hair at front, which improved greatly by the end result..... excellent no nonsense video x

Madeline Kapsa: Absolutely love the color formula used! It’s so soft and natural. Also love how you really focused to maintain the integrity of the client’s hair while giving her the desired look. Wow! <3

Shruffle: I did this but with cascading demi colors in levels 7, 8 and 9 cause my natural root is already a 6, and it came out awesome!!!! THANK YOU for showing us a way easy method! It came out identically just as good as the vids where the beauticians make it look sooo hard with foils, and weaving.

Carmen Salgado: Love it.... nice and clear... CONCISE, Straight to the point... non like others talking too much and not really showing a clear technique.... :-) it would HELP MUCH MORE IF YOU HAVE THE NAME OF THE COLORS SOMEWHERE IN THE SCREEN.

Jessica Beaver: Easy low maintenance and beautifully natural! Love it❤️

Tiffany Davis: I used your technique today and results were fabulous! Thank you for the tutorial! ❤️

Amanda E: The stylist I have been seeing for 15 plus years used your technique from this video after I showed her, and the outcome was absolutely amazing ! Thank you

C P: Thanks for the tutorial Cynthia! It was quick, great tips, beautiful finish!

Vicky: Such a beautiful result. Explained so clearly, thank you for sharing your work with us.

ExcellentFancy: I may have already left a comment, but this literally is my bible for this process. So simple, quick and straightforward. I wish more vids were like yours. Just get to it already. Thanks!

Jacquelyn: Thanks for having a non annoying video and being clear. I don't even do hair and I enjoyed watching. Also, I want you to do my hair

Davita Fed: This is amazing! Fantastic work! This really helped me understand highlights and just overall toners, melting, and roots. Thank you!! Xo

Dana Swan: That was the most amazing demonstration I have ever seen you did an outstanding job explaining everything.

CANCERIAN SOUL JOURNEY: Wow this was a great tutorial. You explained everything very well

Romans116: I’ve watched 2 videos so far and got a lot more out of this then lot of other artists. Awesome tutorial. Thank you!

Onlytymewilltell: FINALLY! a PROFESSIONAL that actually KNOWS what they are doing instead of yammering on about crap they obviously know NOTHING about! ive been sifting through youtube videos on how to properly bleach and tone your own hair at home and trying to find out the best products to use since i really cant afford paying 200$ to have it done at a salon which im assuming thats why alot of us are here. YOU DONE SUCH AN AMAZING JOB ON HER HAIR!!! THAT SHADE OF BLONDE IS SO BEAUTIFUL!

bb89670: Thanks for sharing this video, I learned something finally. It was easy to follow, this was a perfect 10. The other videos I've seen were too distractive, I had to click off. I'm glad I've found this. And I agree with every comment here, No noise, No people talking in the background, No music, so that really help, I was able to focus, on the technique.

Cynthia Dixon: I love it! One question, what would you use if the root color was a dark (level 6) orange/red color?? Would you use an ash level 6 toner or keep it the same as you used in the video? Thanks so much!

dazee mae: this is gorgeous. got a great idea of how to melt mine now . and how easy you made it look. I do honestly think I can do mine myself

Julie Scott: Who is disliking this video? This is amazing work! The color and dimension are stunning.

alibinx19: Amazing!! Looks way easier then going in with foils and weaving!!

allykatt1849: I honestly thought this was going to turn out a hot mess but I'm glad it came out very nice. Great job!

Darla Heinz: I watched this video with my 15 year old daughter. The video was great. After we watched I went to the local Beauty Supply Store and bought Toners that I liked (similar to what she says in the video) My daughter followed the video and my hair turned out great. Thank you so much for taking your time to do the video. My daughter and I will use this video again & do this process again.

Cass Ann: I love your videos Cynthia. They always help me out a bunch. Thanks for the upload!

Carin Janel: thank you for making this understandable and breaking everything down!

kay ge: ugh amazing! i did not know u could put so many layers of color at one time. im forever washing out, drying and reapplying in several steps. genius

Mrs Robinson: Who on earth gave this a thumbs down? One of the best colours I've seen

Amy GÜRKAN: Your tutorial was like, amazing compared to the ones out there! They just say do this and that with no explanation. I am new to doing my own hair, not everyone can afford the 400 to 500 salon job. I figured, if they can do it, so can I. Now I gotta see if my husband will help me with it.

Jennifer Miller: That was so flawless and beautiful you make it look so easy

Vanessa Smith: Really love it! Such an amazing job!

Caitlin Hunter: Hey! I absolutely love these videos, you make it really easy to follow. I have one question how do you rinse the shadow route without it bleeding into the later end?

Lola Siebert: I have been looking for a video like this one, for a long time. I love using redken shades eq because I have blonde hair and using toners instead of harsh chemicals help to keep the hair in a better condition. using too much harsh chemical breaking and damage hair. If I feel like having a couple daker tone it save to do this with a Demi colour. and is easier to go back to blonde. xxxx

Judi Christopher: "Wow"... Great job... Beautifully done... If I had not seen it with my own eyes... I would not have believed this could work... I have been doing hair for over 30 years... This was amazing. "Thank YOU" for sharing this video/tutorial... ;)

Lee Lu: Great job! I'd love to see a similar technique on darker hair.

Rom Gypsy: I absolutely LOVE it!!! Gorgeous color girl!! Great work!

Karen Borland: Looks gorgeous and your explanation was fab!! Do you get much warmth on the roots as the colour fades? And how did you do your blonde? Was it thin diagonal slices or did you balyage?

KushKitten: I've been watching a lot of these videos and this was the most helpful by farrrr! thank you so much!!!❤️

April's Style by Design: Love the attention to detail, really beautiful work!!

Rosangela Lima: Maravilhosas mãos de fada! !!

night time hermit: Fantastic concept and a well produced video

Rachel Lenz: This is SOOOO helpful! Thank you so much :)

Valeria: Omg that blend is so beautiful thank you

Jamie Roberts: Now I have a question, I had someone do a blonde ombre for me a while ago, and it's grown out over almost 2 years now, it's very long, and I want to apply a pastel blue to the whole thing to sort of create a blue ombre instead. Should I really get a different color for the root or will there be enough dimension with the fade I already have?

Daisymagi: I LOVE IT !!! What a Beautiful job you did on her hair. WOW !!! WE need A Few thousand of YOU all over the States because there aren't many good hair Dressers like you that can color. Thanks for sharing your talent. Great Work.

h noneya: I was not expecting that result! Wow! I've never even seen hair done this way!

Brunna Duarte: I just wanna say thank you! I followed your instructions in my own hair, with correspondent Schwarzkopf products, and my hair looks great!

C Chapman: Did this on my Daughter, I was missing 7A used 7N. She didn’t want the the clear, so we used 9V and 9P. It came out Very Natural and Beautiful Looking!!!Thank you! !, You have great talent, not only in teaching ....but in your generosity of sharing these videos with us!

GlacialImpala: In case when you aren't toning the ends the same day you did the bleaching process, do you recommend using a clarifying shampoo to best prep the hair to accept the toner? I forgot I used a nourishing mask and after applying acidic toner it just washed out almost no color grabbed the hair, which makes sense. Now I wonder if one shampoo is enough or I need something stronger to make the hair slightly porous.

Diane Perez: So beautifully done ! ✨✨✨

Jc Girl: Very nice video. Great shadow root! Thank you for being clear on the formula;)

I really love how blended my blonde looks with ashen base but she is frustrated...is there a way to prevent it pulling orange/yellow when you bring blond back up ? (I’m naturally pretty dark brown).
