How To Get Volume At The Crown

Creating volume and balance with Drew Schaefering and Maggie Mulhern

Well heard from Modern Salon TV I am here with Drew Schaffer, we are behind the scenes at a L'Oreal professional shoot and drew has volunteered to show us how to show your client how to get the maximum height and balance and texture in the hair. So go for it right, so you know whether your clients doing it or you're actually buying that you're doing it yourself. One of the most important things to remember when we're taking a client from day to night or creating a special event is creating shape and how to do that simply so on Christina what we've done is we've separated the section so that we have a point a And a point B: okay, now just so you know I'm gon na get behind you here and because we're so high-tech we're gon na bring in a white background, since she has dark hair, it's brilliant! I love it okay, so when Christina, if we want to build a shape in the crown area up through here, that's where I want to focus the most amount of my back combing, and so I've created the section from ear to ear. So I kind of have a point A to point B of where to start and stop and I'm going to take sections and I'm only going to take as much as I can handle so really find sections. And if I'm actually going to over again I'm going to have you lift your elbows there, we go perfect, so I'm actually going over direct it forward slightly and when I back home, I'm pressing all the way down into the root. So it's packing that hair really tight, so the tighter I'm packing it the stronger the shape I'm going to get. So I'm going to do two sections like that, and I'm going to show you how, over directing that forward, is going to help lift that hair straight up you're taking really wide sections is that is that for any particular reason you know it's it's it's allowing me To work horizontally, but I'm only but I'm only back, combing on the one side and the other, because my comb obviously won't fit the entire length of the section. So if I back home on one side and then I come to the opposite side and repeat so, it's not so much the width of the section. It'S how you approach it and so by packing that hair in through here you'll, see when I flip that back. I have a much stronger shape to that and then with back combing there's different types. So a lot of times. You know our clients want that really then want something airy softer a little bit easier. So what we're going to do is I'm going to show you how to take a section in front of our strong shape and we're only going to back home it to the height of our shape, and what that's going to do is it's going to allow this Hair to still stand up but fall over that much softer, and so it doesn't have that pact. What do you say to the client I'm coming back over here? What do you say to the client who says to you? Are you damaging my hair? Okay? So that's a very good question and then the reality of it is yes. There is a little bit of damage when you're back combing, because it's a physical aggression on the hair, but if you're doing it properly, you're not damaging it. So if you notice, if you do it with fluid, even strokes and at the same amount of pressure, it's only packing the hair and pushing it from top to bottom. But if you go in and you do it very aggressively and kind of erratic, then you're pushing the hair side to side up and down and there can be a little more breakage. So when done properly, there's very minimal breakage yeah, that's very good answer. So the key is to have a rat tail. Comb. Excuse me tail comb. Yes, no rest tell. I know it's. You know that, that's so old-school to say, rat tail comb and everybody says: oh so, okay, so a tail comb and then very fine point very good. Yeah, thank you, so the finer, the teeth, the easier it's going to be for you to pack it in. If you have a wide tooth comb, you're not going to get that tension, it's not going to push back in for you and it looks so great. Look at how cool that is, that's really nice! Well, thank you. Have a nice shoot today! Thank you, so much Megan

myutube: Thank you! This might be the technique that does what I want and need. I hope it works.

Anne Murphy: Great tutorial - love the close up!

Tenacious: You should spritz it a little with holding spray at the roots, as soon as you tease it. Holds better and stays in place longer.

Kar LA: OMG! Drew is gorgeous! He was very nice, sweet and extremely generous showing and telling how to do this teasing thing correctly. That lady was kind of rude, but I think in reality she was nervous, because of his "smizing"

Salome7: Really glad I saw this video; directing the section forward before "packing" the hair down turned out to be the ticket that had eluded me.

Jackie O: I like how he gently back Combs. Nicely done

G S: I was born with teased hair. Growing up, kids always told me I combed my hair with an egg beater. I had to get a keratin and a flat iron Look At Me Now. Lol people are still teasing their hair?.

Christel Vinot: I wish you could get volume without damaging your hair. I'm unwilling to back comb lol.

Zawar Haider Khursheed Series: Super marvellous

Andrea Gomez: It's damaging but my hair does this itself, so–. XD

PinkGlitter: What a sweet guy!

Pam Ponpan: I have natural asian super silky straight hair in which I hate my whole life. So damn straight and so flat. This video gives me hope.

Amy D: My hair sucks and if not cut properly with a razor, that part of my hair won’t lift period. I had to buy a razor from Sally’s of all places, I pull that crown up and just dice into it with that razor. Those shears and twisting my hair doesn’t do the job either.

Linda Bowers: Love his arm tat

Anam Siddiqui: ❤

alex o: God he's so attractive, even his hands are beautiful
