1 Month Sisterlocked | What Is Going On With My Sustainable Hair? | Ep 3 Midweek Check In

Happy Wednesday Friends!

It's the middle of the week and time for my midweek, off topic, but relative check in VLOG. This week is Episode 3 of my journey to a more sustainable solution for my hair. In this video I have been locked for one month and this whole experience has been very challenging for me. Bear with me while I navigate through this period and complain about my ends and my consultant. (I'm sticking with her by the way ) I hope this video is helpful to anyone considering #sisterlocks. This journey is not for the faint of heart. Similar to sewing, going through this process requires patience.

For all my regular followers I will be right back here on Saturday at 10am Central with another fashion, sewing, upcycle or thriting video. But for now enjoy details of #myfirstmonthwithsisterlocks . I have long but very fine, very thin and low density hair especially in my crown. My journey is unique and I hope this series helps someone. Happy to answer any questions. Keep in mind I am a newbie and my experience is unique to only me :-) Don't come for me in the comments LOL!! Really it's fine if you do. I'm learning everyday.

See ya Saturday morning

Toodles!!

Jen

Hey good morning, all right, so it's time to take these out so, as you can see, i'm still very scalpy um, i'm going to give myself a couple weeks before i actually wear it out, but i did want you to see how these look, what kind of Curl i get and just kind of have fullness now i thought about wearing my hair like this tonight for the event but um i just don't feel like i'm ready for it. Yet, although they don't look bad, i'm thinking about it, you guys i'm thinking about it. I'M thinking about not throwing the wig on, i think i could for sure do this, for my zoom calls. I think i could feel okay with that um. So maybe maybe i will for tonight we'll see so i'm just gon na wrap it around my finger and basically put this up underneath the wood cap and call it a day. I love this wig because it is so low maintenance. All i have to do to refresh it is spritz some water on it. It also fits my head pretty well, it's one of those rare ones that came in a smaller size and the bands on the inside adjust, so that it fits really good and that's important. Now, because i'm wearing this over my locs and i can't put the combs in to my hair to secure it, this is just showing you how i refresh it. This is what works for me. I do look forward to wearing the wigs less, although i do enjoy changing up my look. The reason that i got the locks, as i stated in my initial video was - i did want to have a little more flexibility with my hair. My hair is really tangly. It'S very thin, although it is really long, it is not very easy to work with and i just felt like i wasn't getting the full breadth of my hair. I wasn't really enjoying it anymore and i didn't want to keep it covered up all the time i mean i do enjoy wearing a wig like i love wearing this wig, because i think it's cute. I love wearing my other one because i do like to have the straight hair look sometimes, but at the end of the day i do want to be able to wear my hair, and i want it to have the versatility and i want it to be beautiful. But i don't want to have to feel like you know. If i want to go on a beach vacation, then i got to worry about my hair. I got to get it braided. I don't want to deal with that. So that's why i did what i did. Hi guys uh, so today i am exactly one week lock. Over the weekend i did wear my hair out. I used the lock loops in my hair and they actually worked really well, i'm actually kind of concerned about continuing to put water on my hair. I'M concerned that that is going to dry my hair out. I have not washed it for the first time, yet i am going to wash it this weekend, so i twisted it into these three twists going one of the things that people who were loose natural before they became a sister lock natural is that they are happy That they can throw away all their products well. For me, i actually have kept most of my products because, like last night, i refreshed this wig i washed and deep conditioned it and the curls came back so great. I just love it. I love the color. I love the bounciness of it. I didn't even use any mousse this morning. Actually i'm out of mousse. Sometimes i use mousse and scrunch it in just to keep the curls for the day, but for day one. I think i'll be okay, hi guys all right. So today is wash day. This is my first time washing my hair. It'S been two weeks. I just haven't had time, so i've been in a wig for about a week. During the day at night, my hair has been in three twists, going back and like little buns at the back of my neck, because that fits better underneath the wig. But as i'm taking my hair down from those twists, i'm really bothered by what i'm seeing and i'm to the point right now, where you guys during this time. I am just complaining about my loctition yeah. I just i'm going on and on about these loose ends and how they look and how i just don't like them, and i feel like there's just been too much hair left out. I think this is normal. I think it's normal pretty problematic. That really concerns me. What i've done with some of my lofts as i've combed them out, and i have re-locked all the way to the end, so the problem that i'm having is that so much of my hair was left out on the ends that it is bunching knotting. You know it's doing a lot so like this one, isn't so bad? Okay, this one yeah this one actually isn't so bad. So like this one, i can leave alone. But if you look here in the front, okay, so here's a good one. So here's a front lock that the lock is to here and all of this hair here, i'm just going to take my tape measure and i'm not going to count the fray part. You know that's like hanging out here at the bottom and go up a little higher, so i've got like three inches of hair. That is not locked. That is just loose so a process, but this happened in like two or three days: it's another one. It'S just just loose hair for like two inches, i'm so irritated by this. I'M so bothered so right now, i'm getting ready to braid in band. This is three week update that i've been locked, and today i just decided to do a little updo using my lock loops, and i do like the fact that the curls are that's that one that i pulled up. I was gon na pull my hair completely up and just leave like these little tendrils, and so that one is like well, you wanted me to hang out didn't you i put lock loops in last night. I just spritz my hair lightly with some water, and this is what i got and i'm really happy with the way it turned out. Now i will say i did reach out to my lactation because um you all know, i've had some concerns about the ends of my hair being left out so much, and so i actually go to see her on tuesday. I do not want my hair cut, i'm pretty adamant about that um worst case scenario: i'm just gon na braid my ends down. That'S my last resort. You know one see what she is able to do if she's not willing to lock my hair down the rest of the way, then i will begin looking for a new loctition. It'S confusing to me because some of the back of my hair is locked all the way down to the ends and there's color there and those ends are weak as well, and so she said that the reason that she left those ends out was because she couldn't Get a good enough grasp or base for the lock, and my point is like i could have gotten a trim, but i was advised not to get a trim before i got my locks, so i just left my scraggly ends there and yes, some of the ends Were scraggly, but i guess i wish i would have known that prior to because i feel like i got charged for 16, 12 and 10 as opposed to a total of 12 all the way around or 10 all the way around um. And then i could have just you know dealt with that so now, i'm the only style that really kind of looks good on me is when my hair is curled. You know like this because i can't i mean i guess i could wear it straight hanging down, but i would need to do something with my ends because they're just kind of like all over the place, so we're going on tuesday and um. I will talk to her about you know: what's going on and see, you know if there's anything that she's willing to do to the ends if and now mind you, i did get a locking tool and i did take a couple of my locks. I wrote down which ones i did and i just tested it out to see if i could lock my hair down to at least you know just leaving about an inch out, and so i was able to do that on about three of my locks and if It works great if it doesn't. You know at some point: i'm gon na get a trim anyway. At some point, i'm going to trim my hair and you know once it starts to kind of get, even because the hair on top is a little shorter than the hair that grows from the back of my hair. So at some point i am going to trim the ends, but i figure you know: i've got 16 inches of hair in the back. I'Ve got 12 inches on the side and 10 in the front. I want to enjoy that length. You know um, i want to enjoy it so and if i couldn't then i would have liked to been told that you know what i'm gon na need to trim your hair first come back in a couple of weeks or a month or whatever, and then we'll Lock it you know whatever i just would have liked to have known that um and the first lactation did not tell me that she locked all the way down to the end, even though my my colored ends are not straight they're, very kinky, very curly they're, just Like the rest of my hair, it's just that they're, a little thinner, hey guys, so i waited until really late at night to get to this hair right now. Looking for the bands there they are so these are the bands that i'm using. I only have a few left. I really need to get to the beauty supply store in the next couple weeks, so i have loosely braided my hair now i'm gon na just turn under. So i have two four five braids all right, i'm going to wash my hair all right, hair is washed. This sister, lock shampoo, was worried about that one little lock back there uh last time. If you guys remember, i tied it up with another one. My hair is so coarse that it wasn't coming down the sister lock shampoo doesn't have um a lot of lather, so you're not like trying to get the suds out just trying to you know rinse your hair thoroughly, so you can see what's happening here. I'M getting some budding, i'm also getting you know where you can see that it's starting to lock up the strand sure i'll have a little shrinkage. You all to see the one month difference between day, one and day 30., all right i'll be back once i get it all taken down. I took some front back side photos so that you could see how it's looking and honestly not bad. Now i'm still really bothered by these loose ends. They are driving me crazy, but you know because i know my hair is not going to unravel because it it is so tight. Um, i'm not worried about it. I'M feeling a lot better about how it's looking like. I feel like i could wear my hair down in another month and not have to do the updos to kind of camouflage two weeks, i'm getting a retie, so i'm gon na be right back at scalpiness, again um, but you know i know the more that i Get it done the more the hair will thicken up and the more this will color cover up. So the strands will you know start to expand so i'll just show you here. I don't know. If you can see, i don't have a lot of new growth, maybe like a quarter inch, maybe about a quarter inch which i think is kind of normal all right, so that is uh one month. This is my one month, lock a bursary and um. I am liking, what's going on here, feeling good about it right now. My hair is wet, i'm gon na just braid it that's the way, my hair lights it. So. Thank you guys, whoa! Thank you guys for watching and let's get on over to that, upcycle bye. Um, you

TheMrsB 11181311: I was the same way, complaining about the loose hair on the ends. I was unhappy for the first week then after the first shampoo where my ends were all curly and cute, I got over it. I trimmed a few ends that were bothering me and kept it moving. Once the hair settles, you’ll feel differently. I don’t think people offering opinions and suggestions without seeing you in person is helpful. Obviously, every head is different and what works on someone else’s head has nothing to do with yours. I was a little salty thinking I should’ve had more locs because I wanted my medium density hair to look really full. Mind you, I didn’t want 400 locs or more because I don’t want to spend 4 hours on retightenings, or risk breakage from too tiny locs and I don’t even like the tiny tiny locs. Talking to or listening to people who claim to have 400-500-600 locs had me doubting my hair would fill out the way I wanted. And the loctitian did give me what I said I wanted. Now at 3 months in, my hair is gorgeous like I knew it’d be but I was just impatient and uncomfortable in the beginning.

Shea Hinton: Hi I just came across your channel. You mentioned you wanted small locs. I think the consultant established your locs to big. I have fine hair. I'm from Chicago as well. There is someone I can recommend to go to her name is Arlanda. She's a Certified training assistant with Sisterlocks ( headquarters ) she's being doing sisterlocks since 2003. She did established my sisterlocks I'll find her information and send to it. Don't wait to long to decide if you want to take them down. She left way to much out at the end.

wonder girl: Looks like your hair is unravelling.
