Janet Stephens’ tutorial for recreating an ancient Roman child’s hairstyle from the 40’s BC, based on a relief sculpture in the Museo Centrale Montemartini in Rome. With Footnotes.

This charming relief statue of what appears to be a mother and daughter can be seen at the Museo champ rally, Monta martini and run dated to the 40's BC. It was sculpted during Rome's violent transition from a public to Principate and is one of the few Roman statues depicting the dress and hairstyle of a very young Roman girl. Roman literature implies that Freeborn Roman children could wear miniature versions of the toga protects top a white toga with a dark reddish purple band along its edge. The girls hair style is unique, consisting of four braids found at the top of the head to recreate this style. You will need the following period: appropriate tools would Urban comes and three hair Bodkins a blunt needle and woolen thread and some scissors to cut the thread with come out. The hair section, the hair into four triangular sections, starting from the crown of the head, the top section, contains all the top hair between the forehead recession points. The side sections contain the temple hair just behind the ears. The back section contains all the remaining hair. From each section, we have a tight three strand braid at the hairline wet the tips of the hair, to make it more pliable if the hair you're working on, wants to unravel, find their tips with thread to keep them braided after braiding. All of the sections draw the ends of all the braids to the crown of the head bind the ends together firmly with thread and stitch to keep them in place. Here I put a loop of thread around the braids before I begin to stitch, I stitch through all the braids then lined thread around the base of the ends, because the ends are short. They are more likely to slip out of the stitching. I therefore double the ends over wrap, more thread around them and Stitch some more once it feels solid. The style is complete. A benefit of this charming style is that it doesn't require much length making it particularly suitable for very young girls.

Jaden Shaw: I'm always so fascinated by your work. It's so important to have the world's view of ancient history not solely be through old dusty textbooks. This is such a hands-on, tangible way to interact with history! Keep up the awesome work.

Kay Eff: The people in your video are SO lucky to get to wear these hairstyles and costumes! :D Would you ever do a Viking hairstyle, or are you more into just the Roman and Greek hairstyles?

Laynie Fingers: Really interesting! At first I thought this hairstyle looked weird. Then I tried to imagine what someone from this video's time would think of hairstyles from the 1980s, or today. Perspective...

Noblebird02: wonderful. it would be reasonably easy for a child to play and not have her hair fall into her eyes all the time.

cherrygingham: It kind of looked like it might have been accomplished with a series of inside out french braids, sometimes called a dutch braids. I wish there were more views of the statue available. Your channel is fascinating!

ChrisSunHwa: She looks so adorable! It would be interesting to see this on longer hair as well, maybe with the rest of the length sewn up into a tower-like style.

Tamara Morton: While I was watching this hairstyle being done, my mind was wandering to what it would be like to live in those days. I think the climate was fairly warm so this would be good for keeping cool on a hot day.

*~SailorJustice~*: I use this style to keep my hair orderly at night! I love these videos - please continue to research these ancient hairstyles!

Alythyslariel Frost: Another great video! I don't know how I missed this one, but I'm just now seeing it. Thank you, as always. I actually enjoyed the music as well.
