In this video you will learn how to cut the top section of comb over hairstyle. Learn how to cut with a barber shear and a thinning shear.

#combover #ivyleaguehairstyle

We'Re going to start on the top section by using a scissor over fingers technique. I want to keep in mind when I'm picking up the hair. I want to keep my fingers parallel to the floor because for this haircut we want a square shaped haircut. We want to keep some weight in the corner, so the hair is going to comb back, so we always want to make sure that whether we're picking the hair up with the comb or our fingers that were cutting the hair parallel to the floor. So what I want to do is I want to slightly over direct and all is that over directing means. I know it's a fancy term. It just means pulling the hair back a little bit farther, instead of cutting it right in front. If we start cutting right here, we're going to cut the front too short, so we want to over direct it slightly to leave a little more length towards the front and make our first cut and that's going to create our first guide. We want to take very small sections, so we can see our underneath guide showing through and we want to work our way back to the crown you can't take enough sections, the more sections you take, the more accurate your work is going to be and just like, We over directed it in the front. You want to do that in the back as well and pull pull from where the crown is forward. So we leave the hair long enough, so it doesn't stick up in the back. So that's going to create our center guide and then we're going to take a section on the side to the right. So now what we have is we have two guides. We have a center guide and we have a guide underneath. So I always want to have a guide that I'm following that way: you'll always know where you're coming from and you're never going to get lost on a haircut. The reason I'm starting on the top is because we want to remove all the bulk from the top. So, by the time that we get to the sides - and we taper up with our Clippers - we're not fighting all this hair, all this hair is going to be going so the next section we want to take a third set, a second section on the right. There'S not going to be much hair there to cut because it's a shorter haircut again making sure your fingers are parallel to the floor. Now we're going to start on the opposite side. Locate your center guide fingers are parallel to the floor and we're taking small sections. Never let go of the hair. You want to keep a constant tension on the hair. Now, when we get an even cut and we're going to take our last section, finding our previous guide from the center and we're going to work our way to the back, and I never like to comb the bangs straight down or the fringe straight down and cut Straight across because then, what's going to happen is where we want the front to be the longest part of the haircut, it becomes the shortest part of the haircut. So if you want to take a little bit of length off, you can see if we pick it up there, where it looked a little bit longer. We just don't over direct it back as far and then that we let the hair fall back down that takes care of the length. Okay, always we could always do it again if it's still a little, we find another long spot and you always want to make sure you have a towel handy. So you can brush your customer off if the hairs falling in his face. Okay, so that's how we layer the top section and now before we start on this round of the head section, we need to go through the top, because the hair is so thick. We need the length, so it's going to comb the way we want it to calm and style. The way we want, but we also have to go through and thin it out with the blending or texturizing shears, so the hair, the haircut, will hold its shape as it grows in for the texturizing process. What I want to do is I want to comb the hair in the direction that the client is going to style it, and I want to cut the hair against the grain when I'm picking it up with the comb. So we want to go through and remove a lot of that thickness, so the hair, the hairstyle, will hold the shape as it grows in the slower. I move the comb, the more hair that I'm going to take out the faster. I move the comb, the less hair, so for this. For this model he has extremely thick hair. So I want to move the comb slow, I'm using a wider toothed blending shear, so I don't take too much hair out and again I'm keeping the comb parallel to the floor. I don't want to round the corners okay and that completes the texturizing step on the top. You

Tyler Caskey: As a new barber, I am struggling with area around the bangs and the corner above the temple. It seems no matter how hard I try I always either end up messing them up or not doing enough. Both sections. I would love to see a video concentrating on just that area, especially when they are going from longer hair to more of a fade style.

charmingman1121: this was a great tutorial! i have ben struggling with various ways of how to go about the top for a comb over. i will defiantly be trying this out tomorrow on my first comb over client.

Rodney Ebersole: I have to thank you for this educational video. It has taken 5 months to find a video like such with very good slow spoken explanation. Great job!

Ben Lin: Thank you for this video. I cut my three boys’ hair. I’ve been trying to improve my fading. I am new to cutting bangs. Thanks, I just fixed their haircut lol

TheDouble K: Thank you so much. I messed up my boyfriends hair trying to just trim it since Cova19 shutdown barber shops, and Ive been dying to find a way to fix the top and front

Carlos Quiroz: Finally a great barber video in YouTube. I'm tired of seeing so many clipper fade videos!

Lesley Coc: I know this video is three years old but very simple yet efficient technique. Thank you

JLD: I'm really struggling when I'm cutting my bangs for an Hairstyle. Good thing I've found this. Thank you!

TimelordUK: I adore you as a barber. You are my inspiration. You are who I want to be when I gain more skills and experience. Talented, polite, well groomed.

PNW Babe: I went through 2300 hours of cosmetology school and we didn't receive a lot of education on men's haircuts, just basic cuts. My dad has this combover style and I've had the hardest time trying to cut them without going too short on the bangs and this video helped SO much. I'm saving this video. Thank you

GAMING SQUAD: I always skip cutting bangs. This was stupid easy and I did a great job first try! Thanks!

Barber Mike: I have always liked the use of thinning shears.

I Think Like A Kid: I'm in England, U.K. It would be beneficial if you had one DVD that shows the basic hair cutting techniques for home haircutters. Regards! Oh, at a bargain price too.

Micheal W: Great Video! Easy to understand!

Wildflower: I wish you showed the entire haircut. I have a client with the exact same hair wanting basically the same haircut but I would like to see how you connect it and how you cut the back and blend it to the top!

Antione Dunn: That was very helpful I appreciate the way you explain you just made me a better BARBER

Brian Cleary: this is my favourite mens cutting vid, thanks Greg!

kamil luszczyszyn: I really hope this works, my top shear work gets so messy and goes all sort of directions

D Jones: Great tip. Thank you. We all miss our stylists!!!!!

Phuong: how did it take me a year to find this video!? thanks!!!!

itay malka: what do you suggest to those who cut thier top hair but can't really see the guideline looking at thier reflection? ive been learing this technique and manged to apply it when i cut other's hair but can't do a good job on my head using this method... please help me realize what's wrong

Fartripper556: Greg, do you have a shop opened to the public?

Son Ser: This s a great barber and really learned from this video. Plus the model is very handsome. I wish to be like him or more..

Suzie Wong: OMG, due to lockdown the barbers are obviously closed, so I tried cutting my 5yr old sons hair by myself. The clipper job back and sides weren’t too bad but the scissor job on top and in particular the front is horrendous! Have you seen Jim Carey in Dumb and Dumber? Well that’s what his hair looks like...poor kid! So glad it’s winter as he’s got to wear a hat, if outdoors, and for his occasional online lesson I need to put some gel at the front and try for a “messy, trendy” look but it isn’t fooling anyone!! I had to take a few pics to look back on and someday laugh and also to remind myself NEVER to try a DIY haircut EVER again!
