Trend Watch: Glow in the Dark Hair

These last couple of years have been pretty creative in the world of hair color. Galaxy hair, opal hair, and oil slick hair are just a few examples of recent hair color trends to emerge. But this new trend takes the cake: glow in the dark hair. Yes, you read that right. This trend, also known as blacklight hair, is taking the world by storm.

Glow in the dark hair has actually been around for a while in the form of Manic Panic High Voltage Classic Cream Formula, but nobody really knew about it until recently. This color line comes in multiple colors, but not all glow under a black light. Colors like “Cotton Candy Pink,” “Electric Banana,” and “Wildfire,” however, will glow brightly.

Manic Panic’s high voltage glowing colors work because they are “UV reactive.” They are not actually “glow-in-the-dark.”

Manic Panic is proud that their hair products are vegan and cruelty-free, and because they are semi-permanent, they won’t damage your hair. Semi-permanent colors work by coating the hair shaft with color pigments, rather than chemically changing your hair. This means that you don’t have to mix any peroxide with it. It also means that the color will fade quickly, causing high upkeep.

However, if you want a more vibrant color, I would suggest bleaching your hair first (which will cause some damage), especially if your hair is dark. After bleaching,  your hair will also be more porous, which will hold the color a little better. Just be careful not to overdo the bleach, and consult a professional if you have any questions or concerns.

Want more variety? Other companies such as Splat have jumped on the glowing semi-permanent hair color bandwagon. And if you aren’t ready to take the plunge, look for a temporary option like chalk or mascara. These will wash right out of your hair when you are done with them.
