Typically, when people on the internet talk about aging, they are talking about skin care or they are talking about cosmetic procedures, but not today. Today, i'm going to tell you that the key to looking absolutely gorgeous in your 50s, 60s and 70s is a great head of hair and, in particular, a fantastic haircut as a licensed hairdresser. I have a ton of clients in this age group and they happen to be my favorite clients to work with, and the reason that i love working with women in their 50s, 60s and 70s is not only that they have amazing conversation in the chair. They have great life experience, amazing advice, tons of great stories, but it's also because i find that you can completely transform the way someone looks and feels by giving them a great haircut that is not only suitable to their age but complementary to their age. Today, i'm going to talk about my favorite haircut ideas for mature women. Let'S go the first haircut that i'm going to suggest, for you is long hair. I bet you didn't see that one coming and i bet you've been told by a hairdresser before that. As you get older, you really shouldn't have long hair. This is something that i deeply and fundamentally disagree with, and this is why, if you are blessed with a beautiful hair, texture and really beautiful, thick hair, then having long hair is something that's going to make. You look incredibly feminine and incredibly sexy, and it does not matter if you are over the age of 50.. Now here is where the problem lies. What can typically happen as we age is, our skin loses elasticity over time when we lose elasticity, we also lose volume. When we lose volume, we start to get fine lines and wrinkles and over time, those fine lines and wrinkles transform into deeper lines and wrinkles. Now, when you have very very long hair, what can happen? Is the eye gets drawn down? So you basically get this illusion of a dragged down effect now when you've lost volume in your face, when your eye is dragged down from your haircut, what can happen? Is you end up looking more tired, you end up lacking radiance, and you end up looking older, now, there's a solution to this problem, while keeping your hair long. What you want to do is you want to shorten your hair a bit. It doesn't have to be short by any means, but we want to keep it at the shoulder or slightly below the shoulder. You can even go as long as here and what you want to add to it is you want to add layering to it. What'S going to happen, when you add layering around the face and throughout the entire perimeter of the hair, is you are going to expand to the hair and when you expand the hair, you create movement and width. When you create width, you create the illusion that that width is also in the face width. Equals volume equals youth equals radiance. If you have this long, layered hair. Another way to give yourself more volume in the face and more width in the face is to add curls to add waves, adding texture. All of that is also going to widen that illusion and create more youthfulness in the cheekbones and the jawline area. Here is one of my favorite clients who's above 50. Her name is shelly and what we do with her hair is. I keep it really really light on top since she's completely white on top, her regrowth becomes more seamless, but she was really missing. Having a bit of depth and a little bit of warmth in her face, so the under layer of her hair is dark. Her hair is lightly layered. It'S below the shoulder and she's got lots of face framing pieces that soften out her face at the front. Now the key again is to create that width. So in shelly's case i like adding a lot of volume in her blowout. The way that i do, that is when i am blow drying her hair, and this is something that you can do at home as well. Instead of blow drying it in a part, i actually section that entire middle section out and i blow dry it backwards. I use little pin clips just to keep that curl in place until the hair cools down and sets the shape, and then i run my hands through it and, as you can see, you get this tons like loads of lift up in the root area which just Lifts her face right up and gives the illusion of so much youthfulness when you are working with your hair, whether it's long or short or anything, you really do want to use the current looks as inspiration. I often get my clients asking me if it's inappropriate for them to use these current looks because they're too old for it or whatever. This could not be further from the truth. If you start styling your hair in the way that is in style now or that is very current, it's going to make you look fashionable it's going to make you look youthful and kind of in with the times, whereas, if you continue to style your hair, the Way that you did back when you were younger in the 80s and 90s you're automatically going to tell people that you're not as current that you're, not as fashionable, which kind of makes you by default, look older. Even if you don't even look old at all the next length that i want to talk about and that i highly recommend is the bob. The bob is a very current hair. Look that a lot of people of all ages are loving right now. The reason this is a fantastic haircut for someone 50 plus, is because it is super trendy. It is super sophisticated, but it also gives you a really automatic lift and makes your face look significantly more full with way less effort than if you have long hair with bobs. You can start customizing a lot. By doing you know, graduated bobs straight bobs. You can start adding fringes, and that brings me to another really great suggestion i have for more mature skin and that is adding a fringe or a bang. To your look. Bangs can be an absolute godsend to your hairstyle. I just got them myself. They can make you look so much more beautiful, depending on which bangs you get and how it complements your face shape. I did an entire video talking all about bangs and which face shape. It looks better with so. If you want to check out that video, if you're going to get your new haircut, you want to try out bangs, then definitely go to that link. Next, i'm going to leave it in the comment section below the absolute best part about bangs other than the fact that it does shorten your face again and create more volume is also that it hides all of the wrinkles in your forehead, and it typically does quite A good job of hiding the wrinkles around the side of your eyes as well. You know your crow's feet area. If you get your hair colored or you want to do some color, what bangs can also do is. It can add an instant warmth to your skin tone when we age, we tend to lose a bit of color. So when you're, adding like a warm blonde or a nice, warm brown right into the front of your face, you're kind of bringing that whole thing into your actual skin tone, and that can be incredibly flattering. Finally, let's talk about the pixie, because a lot of older women really really love the pixie and i've seen it work so beautifully, but i've also seen it really really age people. Now, when it comes to the pixie, we need to keep in mind that hair is a really good way to create illusions in the face. That is what i talk a lot about on this channel: how to create the illusion that you want with your haircut and color. Now, when you have a pixie cut, that is too too short. You take away the hairs ability to create any illusion, so all you're going to focus on is the face. That'S why holly berry's pixie works so so well, holly berry is known in hollywood to be like the starlet with the perfect pixie, and that really is because she has such a beautiful, symmetrical gorgeous perfect face that when all the hair is gone from it all, you See is the face, but this can really really backfire. If there's things about your face that you want to camouflage. So if you have a little bit of extra weight here in your chin, if you have a very very short, pixie, you're gon na see it right away. If you have a lot of lines and wrinkles around your eyes or a lot of lines on your forehead, if you have a very, very short pixie, all the arrows are going to be pointing to those lines. There is nothing to kind of soften it out an awesome way to really pull off a beautiful pixie when you're older is to make sure that the front of that pixie has some length. You can still keep the back really tight. Keep everything really cropped in even around the ears, but here at the front, if you have a little bit of movement a little bit of length, you can start to do all of those illusion style things again. You can start to hide some of the forehead. Wrinkles hide some of the crow's feet wrinkles, and you can even create a little bit of lift to give yourself the illusion that you have these really huge, beautiful, high cheekbones. Even if you don't here, is a big no-no when it comes to a pixie cut. If your intention is to look more youthful, the big no-no is getting one of those very standard, grandma pixie cuts. You know the ones that are just not in style anymore, that are very like cookie cutter that aren't customized to your face, shape or to your hair texture. If you get an outdated haircut, you will look outdated if you style your hair in a way that is outdated, because that's what you're used to you will look outdated. That'S just a reality! Thank you guys so much for watching. If you like, this video, give me a thumbs up, as that really helps my channel grow and i'll see you next week, bye

Gabi: Thanks for hanging out with me today! If you have any questions, don't forget to drop it here in the comments section! I love making videos that answer your specific questions. hair dresser: I also love long hair on quite a lot of my over 50 clients. But I would love to add to this discussion that frizzy hair ALWAYS ages. To wear it long, no matter the color, the hair CAN"T appear witch-like. I apologize if I sound blunt. Conditioner isn't always the solution, using styling tools properly works wonders

Amy Rutherford-Close: When I was young, the requirement was for women my age (57) to cut their hair short. Love that everything goes now

Following The Agee's: After COVID hit, I FINALLY let my dyed hair go natural...and I LOVE IT! Had to cut my long hair short, and bite the bullet! Now I'm experimenting with different layered medium styles, and your advice is PERFECT!! Thnx so much...Lisa

Susan Chaney: Great timing! Over Covid I've let my hair get fairly long and one length. I know I need layers but I'm just not sure what I want to do and where to go. Love my regular stylist but she just asks what I want--and layers in the past have not been my favourite because she thins it out too much. Thanks for a great video!

Dancing Delilah: Great video and just what I needed as a woman of sixty. I love the bob cut and longer lob cuts. A few months ago my hair was 1 length to my shoulders. I went to a place to get a lob with subtle long layers and came with plenty of photos of the style I hoped to achieve. What I ended up with was a shaggy, short layers on top and back of hair, longer layers towards my face hideous mess.....When I tried to style it I looked like a throwback to the 80's!!! Which of course aged me terribly and I've been hiding ever since. I just need to find the right stylist that knows how to do bob or lob. The last one I went to clearly had no idea and when she asked me what a Lob was, I should've realized this hair cut was gonna end badly!

Connie Wolff: Thanks for sharing this Content and debunking the myth that everyone over 50 has to have short hair. However, I think it would’ve been much more helpful to show the hair styles and effects of the hairstyles on women who actually need this information. And not celebrities who have most likely had cosmetic work or at the very least I’d probably spent 2 to 3 hours in hair and make up before those pictures were taken.

Yvonne Charneskey: Just discovered your channel. What a great video this was and thank you. Would be interested in what you recommend for thinning hair in the front and sides whether it be a pixie or a Bob or a shoulder length style. Maybe there are some tricks to making it look a little fuller without adding extensions?

Anna Desai: This was an awesome video. Totally makes sense, everything you said. So helpful. Thank you.

Charlene Tritipeskul: I'm 65 years old, and have long hair for the last 30 years. Fighting short hair advice. :). For the last year, I put the hair in the bun when I was sleeping. In the morning, I got the soft curly hair without killing them with hot curler. Your advice about laying the hair around my face was very promising. Hopefully, My hairdresser would know how to do it. I also love bang. Thanks for this great video ❤️

HoneyBee Journey: I just found your channel, Gabi, and I'm learning a lot with you.

Zoe Pup: Well, I liked this video up until she used Jamie Lee Curtis as a “bad” example of a pixie. I absolutely love JLC hair! Her style makes her beautiful! She is one of THE best examples of beautiful aging!

Jill Campbell: Affirmed! —I’ve been doing it right. Yay! Really like this vid—extremely informative as well as great visuals. Thanks so much.

Jody Zonneveld: I'm 40, my mum is 63 and has had the same hairstyle my whole life! She uses hot rollers, sets and back combs the bangs every morning, it's so 80's it's sad. Over the years she did move away from it from time to time, and I've tried to give her lessons on round brush blow drying to soften her look but she always goes back to the hot rollers. Yes, her hair is fried, but thankfully she has gone fully grey now and isn't colouring anymore. She has baby fine hair (like me), and this is all she knows how to do/ what she is comfortable with, unfortunately it ages her a lot. I'll keep all of your tips in mind for myself :)

Jennifer Lilley-Crowe: So helpful! I have long hair because my husband loves it. I do not. The compromise was I will keep it long, but I get to choose the color. Heh. But I really want to cut it to collarbone length as a bob, possibly with bangs. The bangs in my pic are now chin length. I would love to see a video on mid length hair, bangs and no bangs, how to style it. I need the refresher course I will check your videos and see if you have one like that. If not I would love to see one.

Tracy Lynn: I wore a pixie cut throughout my 20's, 30's and 40's. But as I approached my mid 50's, it looks really harsh and aging. I have now grown it out to the top of my shoulders. It makes a world of difference in softening an aging face.

Happy Bunny: Hi just found you and love the advise you give…. New sub here xxx I’m in the UK and find it extremely difficult to find a good hairdresser that can actually cut long layers and style hair without using straighteners. Perhaps you could do a vid on how to find a good one and the red flags at consultations that we should be aware of ?

Copper Head: This Video was Very Helpful . I just wished I would have found it before I went crazy and chopped my hair off. Lol I am 51 and in the last Three years worth my hair chemistry changing it has been a struggle to find a hair style for me. I feel like I am a serial hair style killer. I have gone through more styles but nothing seem to check off all He boxes I want. It also doesn’t help that my hair is very fine and can get frizzy in Humidity, which living in Fl does not help. I think I need to change my hair stylist, it has been a love hate relationship. Some times she gets it and I’m happy but then when I go back for the touch up it’s lie she doesn’t remember what she did last time and something just isn’t right . This last time I went the pixie.. the Hailey Berry style it turned out great ! Middle of summer was perfect, but I go back for trim and I got old lady style ‍♀️‍♀️ So I’m so frustrated. I’m letting it grow out so I can start all over again .. I just wish I could fined someone that could just look at my face .. and hair and give me the hairstyle meant for me!

Chris Gogreve: I am getting ready to,get a pixie cut and I am 65 years old. I was letting my hair grow but no one seems to like it so I am going back to a short hairdo. I really want my pixie to be piecey and I hope the stylist can do that. Thanks for sharing this video. Great timing.

Laurett Gannon: This is so helpful! What do you advise for women who wear glasses and still want to cut bangs?

ARIA PAX: GABI: WHAT ARE THE BEST HAIRCUT STYLES FOR WOMEN WITH LESS HAIR ON THE CROWN AND TOP OF FOREHEAD.? Might be a another fun video ideas for us your followers ☺️

Andrea oldfield: Thank you for all your wonderful advice.. ❤️

ARIA PAX: GABI GREAT VIDEOS. I HAVE THESE QUESTIONS FOR YOU : 1- WHAT'S YOUR FEEBACK ON PUTTING ORGANIC HENNA ON HAIR? 2- HAVE YOU TRIED RINSING YOUR HAIR WITH VINEGAR? FRIZZY HAIR 3-DO YOU STILL USE THE LASER CAP TO GROW HAIR?

Buford C.: In my opinion, shelly needs low lights put in through the middle and top of her hair. It would look much better.

terri jones: Vid was VERY helpful. Thanks for sharing your knowledge.

nordlys: Thanks for your suggestions. One day after Christmas I have an appointment with a new hairstylist. I want a bob with a length until my jaw. Can't wait. Merry Christmas!

S M: I think Jamie Lee Curtis looks amazing with her pixie. Yes her wrinkles show a bit but that’s because she hasn’t botoxed them away!

FlashOhJoy: I’ve never had long hair, it’s not going to happen in my 70’s…. Short and perky for me.

Annette Perrin: Awesome info, thanks~☀️

Sandra Stoffa: How about older ladies with fine and thinning hair especially on top? Bangs are not an option. Neither is long layers. We all do not have Christie Brinkley hair But kudos to the ones who do✌

liberty Ann: Chopping off your hair doesn't make you look younger, it makes hair salons richer. I'm in my 60s, hair neatly styled past my shoulders, very little gray. So there!

Deborah Soulier: Hey, what a great video! Loved it!!

Sam Gorsche: Hi Gabon, what if your hair is quite thin can you still cut layers and bangs? ❤️

Lydia Dragone: She had gorgeous hair!

MARY LEBEAU: Awesomeness thank you.

Rachelle Pincus: You are Lovely. Ty for your professional advise ❤️

Nancy Lau: I find that most aging women don't look great w/ long hair. You highlighted models & actresses!! Of course they're going to look good w/ long hair! That's not your average woman w/ thinning gray hair!

P A: Why is everyone so obsessed about looking younger???

Lynn Taylor: So sad a hairstylist promotes hiding your face as a way to improve self-image. How about a little self-acceptance? - Signed, a brush-cut wearing, 58 year old, silver-haired, yoga-loving warrior woman.

Lisa Arellano: Woooooow I needed to here you thank you for your help I wanted bangs but didn't no if at 60it was ok also my face is square and chubby so don't no

pegasusjourney: How can we see the effect you are explaining if the lady doesn’t remove the mask?

pais parker: that pic of jane fonda at 8:54 is a total wig, and shes been pulled more times that christmas taffy.

Lisa Bonelli: Pixi bob for thin hair with bangs

CGTVE is cringe and trash and sucks: I'm 11 and now I look like a 7 year old cuz I got a short haircut

Debbie Hallden: Hoew did you style your hair. Beautiful

Lanora Bayer: I love what you are saying but I have to know who cut your bangs?

Cheryl Geiger: 5 minutes in and have only seen one cut

Midrilla 18: Everything was interesting till the mask. Goodbye.

Dori Lilly: I will NEVER have short hair. Short = surrender!

jvb654: A mask on the “model,” seriously?

Cristina Gloria: Too much talking!!!!!

Enchanting Marina: Long hair. Did you know women are not supposed to cut their hair at all according to the Bible. Look it up.
