Should I invest in a wig brush?

Whether human hair or synthetic, taking care of your wig is the key to looking great, and feeling comfortable and confident. But it’s not just how you wash your wig and how often that matters.

Your wig needs daily care, and it all starts with the way you brush. Contrary to popular belief, you can’t treat your wig the same way you’d treat your natural hair. Even a task as simple as brushing has to be adapted for wig wear.

Investing in a wig brush is one thing we’d recommend to every wig wearer, here’s why…

The truth about tangling

The simple truth is that without the right care, both human hair and synthetic wigs get tangled. There are many reasons why tangling is such an issue for wig wearers, here Boo Roo and Tigger Too reveals some of the most common:

“The synthetic covering fibres are from plastics, polymer, or so. They are prone to tangling. And the over-processed human hair wigs are also easy to become tangled when exposed to water, high temperatures and even weather conditions. Your wig is more likely to tangle if you don’t maintain it well. You will wash it regularly with soft shampoo and conditioner. Also, you need to keep it stored in the right place.”

The lack of natural oils in a wig also makes tangling more likely. By regularly brushing with a specialist wig brush or comb you can tackle tangling head-on, without damaging your wig.

The advantages of using a wig brush

Wig brushes aren’t as hard on your wig as regular, everyday brushes. The latter can easily put strain on wig fibres, pulling out and stretching hairs with every stroke.

Wig brushes have been specially designed to go easy on wig fibres, whilst detangling the knots that hold the texture and look of your wig back. They usually have prongs with small bobbles at the end to prevent dragging and snagging, and ultimately protect your wig fibres.

Wig brushes are great for synthetic wigs and are considered a better alternative for styling than wig combs. With a wig brush, you can delicately detangle wig fibres and style them to a sleek, smooth finish.

Top brushing and styling tips from our experts

So you have the right tool to detangle your wig, now how do you get started? Brushing your wig can be a little more difficult than giving your natural hair the same treatment.

Unlike your natural hair, which can be brushed from top to bottom, it’s recommended you brush your wig from the bottom upwards to avoid the tugging and pulling that dislodges and loosens fibres. Do this by brushing your wig in small sections and be as gentle as possible.

You should never brush your wig when it’s wet either. Wet wig fibres aren’t just more prone to damage, they can become permanently stretched.

For curly wigs, avoid using a wig brush completely. You can detangle and preserve your look by brushing your wig with your fingers.
