HAIR REPLACEMENT 101

Hair growth occurs in cycles, but there are things that can interfere with your hair’s normal growth cycle. This interruption can lead to temporarily losing more hair then you want or permanent hair loss.

The normal turnover of hair in catagen (transition) and telogen (resting) phase is a healthy part of hair growth; excessive hair shedding or alopecia is not desirable. 25% of woman experience hair loss beginning in their 40s and 50% of women will experience hair loss by the age of 50.

Top causes of hair loss include:

  • Hormonal
  • Age
  • Hereditary
  • Lack of blood supply
  • Stress
  • Severe Depression
  • Weight loss induced by severe dieting
  • Incorrect chemical applications (poorly done bleaching, coloring & relaxer i.e. home sevices)
  • Traction Alopecia (cornrows or braids that are too-tight or excessive pressure on the root)
  • Postpartum hair loss

There are visual cues that women can look for over time. Although men’s hair tends to recede from the forehead or the crown of the head, women tend to notice thinning on the top third to one half of the scalp. Sometimes their frontal line stays intact. Women may see a part that is gradually becoming wider or see more of their scalp than normal when their hair is pulled back. Also if excessive shedding lasts over 3 months, it is recommended to seek advice from your dermatologist and/or hairstylist.
