Mega Tek Equine Rebuilder Review. Does it really work for human hair growth?

Of course here at BHI we are always on the lookout for the newest product on the black hair communities and boards. It was just a matter of time until we tried Mega Tek for ourselves.

The product comes in a black bottle with blue and white writing stating that it will help coats and hooves grow faster! The product was initially made for human use then switched over for the animal care market but we have been assured that it is perfectly safe for humans too!

These are the product claims on its website:

• Strengthens without the user of synthetic polymers, oils* or petroleum based products.
• Megatek makes the hair 30% stronger so less hair falls out.
• Chemotherapy patients really like this product. It is also used by people who are experiencing hair loss due to high blood pressure medication

Ingredients: Deionized water, hydrolyzed keratin protein, stearalkonium chloride, glyceryl Stearate, peg 100 stearate, marine protein, peg 40, panthenal, dimethicone copolyol, magnesium* citrate, Allantoin, amino acids, methylparaben, Mucopolysaccharides, propylparaben, imidazolidinyl urea, fragrance.

Dosage & Administration: Apply to wet clean hair. Used like a conditioner 3 times a week after shampooing, your hair will be thicker and fuller. Just rub a small amount in your hair and let it stay on from 2 to 5 minutes, then rinse out.

We were now raring to go! Before Megatek, our lady tester’s longest layer of hair was approximately 6 inches. She is a black woman with average condition relaxed hair and would like to have thicker longer hair. We sent her off with the bottle of the Megatek Rebuilder and told her to use it as per the instructions. The 16 oz bottle was to last her 1 month at which point we would do a length check.

For the first month, our lady tester washed her hair with her own sulphate free shampoo and conditioned religiously with Megatek 3 times per week. She reports that sometimes she would skip the shampoo altogether and opt just to condition with the Megatek before rinsing. She loves coconut* smell of Megatek!

A month after she began, she had her hair straightened for a length check. She was happy to learn that she’d had about an inch of growth. Her longest layer was now about 7 inches long! She said that she’d had virtually no breakage in the past month and had already ordered a second bottle of the Rebuilder!

Another month went by and our lady tester wanted another length check. We recorded an excellent 7 and 1/2 inches in her longest layer. Our lady tester was pleased with the results, with her serial breakage in the past she wasn’t used to keeping her length when her hair grew!

Her hair was now was now much fuller especially at the roots where the hair was still unprocessed and she was finding it a bit difficult to deal with the two hair textures so she decided to braid up for the next two months while continuing to wash her hair with the Megatek 3 times per week.

We were dying to hear her results when she finally did a length check. Her longest layer was now approximately 8 and 1/2 inches long! That was an impressive 2 and 1/2 inches in 4 months! Needless to say, she was determined to continue using Megatek.

The verdict:

Positives:

• It is a protein conditioner so it makes the hair stronger and majority of the length is kept after growth.
• It has a lovely smell

Negatives:

• It did not make the hair grow much faster than the standard average growth, it was the length retention that made the hair seem to grow faster!
• At $23.60 (£21.95, cheapest price in the UK!) this product does not come cheap.

The truth is that your hair will grow anyway and will continue to do so as long as you live.  The only way to get long hair is to retain length and like many other protein conditioners, Mega Tek can help you do that. Don’t expect to grow an inch a month but if you have a problem retaining length then Mega Tek is for you!
