Demetria Lucas Posts An Afro Selfie On Instagram And Responds To A Follower On Natural Hair Hate

Demetria Lucas Posts An Afro Selfie On Instagram

Demetria Lucas of the TV show Blood Sweat and Heels took to Instagram this week and posted a selfie with no weave* and no make up with the caption:

Me. #noweave #nomakeup #getfree #ordietrying

Honestly I had no idea she wore a weave* on occasion, she has always kept it all natural in terms of her look, her hair always is full, styled nicely, and even in the selfies her actual hair is nothing short of amazing.

Demetria Lucas is a pretty accomplished young lady outside of the show, she is an author and very successful blogger making a name for herself coaching and helping other young women with very relevant social topics like dating and relationships.

Even though we liked the selfie a particular question from one of her followers caught our eye and we thought her answer was quite interesting. The follower on Instagram asked:

@abelleinbk do you ever get low key racist remarks regarding your natural hair when you make appearances? Have you in the past?

Her response was:

Only from other black people. Never at appearances. More on social media. And its not low key. It’s more like “n-bomb, comb our (expletive hair)

It was surprising, because, really who wouldn’t love her hair but then it wasn’t that surprising  because we often hear and see ourselves, particularly on Facebook, the level of hate and disdain women with natural hair get on a daily basis. We have had readers comment on pictures with just outrageously mean comments to which us moderators dismiss them as trolls, often wondering if there is any point of even arguing.

Ultimately there is no point, natural hair within the black community on a wider scale than just our small circles still requires some work where acceptance is concerned. That just means there is a ton of work to do in order to break the cycle of hate that some might have for what is growing out of their own scalp and as always we are up for the challenge.

Have you ever wondered why we do celebrity posts?

It might seem as if its all fun and games and often times we are having a lot of fun, who doesn’t like a little celeb gossip every now and then? But there are other reasons too, sometimes celebrities can reach certain people in ways that a regular person cannot, so when influential women show acceptance for something as simple as natural hair it needs to be highlighted and Demetria is no different.

So in the spirit of what Demitira said, how do you handle natural hair haters?
