Brandy Loves Natural Hair But Says As An Actress She Has To Be Versatile

Brandy Norwood
Brandy recently sat down with Essence Magazine and shared her current hair regimen for on and off the Broadway stage.

The singer and actress is currently staring as Roxie Hart in Broadway’s long-running revival of Kander & Ebb’s Chicago. She gets to wear a wig* for her character, which is an excellent protective style.

As for off the stage, Brandy is a natural and loves wearing her black hair which she feels brings out her features. She is big on taking care of her hair and uses the Moroccan Oil line faithfully.

We all remember Brandy coming on the scene rocking her braids which was her signature look for a while and now she mentions wanting to loc her hair if it was up to her.

“ESSENCE.com: I’ve noticed that you’ve worn afros and different big or curly styles.

Brandy: That’s one of my favorite styles, is the big curly hair and the braids. I love braids, and twists, and I love the natural expression, that’s my thing. If it were left up to me, I would actually loc my hair, but I’m an actress too, so I have to be versatile. If it were left up to me, I would do the locs.”

She further said that she believes that locs would make her feel more natural, be more “her” and bring out her beauty in a way that afros cannot.

As for my opinion, I say go for it! Now I do understand why actresses have to be versatile when it comes to hair but hey, that’s what wigs* are for!

Also I’m sure casting directors would be very receptive of it. We all loved her braids and I’m sure we would love the locs on her as well.

There are already actresses who have embraced the natural style of locking their hair. Vanessa A. Williams from the Soul Food Series did.

What’s your opinion on black actresses having to limit their choices of hair style based on versatility?
