How To DIY Your Own Hair Butter

DIY Hair Butter

The seasons are changing and it’s officially getting colder out. This means that it’s time to switch our regimens to accommodate the harsh weather changes. One way we can do that is by adding thicker hair butters* when doing the LOC/LCO method and styling.

Now, while there are plenty of brands that sell hair butters, you can cut out the middle man (and have more freedom!) by making your own. The recipe below will help you make the perfect butter that your hair and skin will love!

What You Need:

Raw Shea Butter
Coconut Oil*
Vitamin E* Oil
Fragrance (in the video she uses both Rosemary* and Pure Vanilla)

Also:

Large Mixing Bowl
Mixer
Ziploc Bag (or Icing Bag)
Glass Containers

In the video, she uses her own measurements to make this hair butter. You can go with those measurements, or you can eyeball your own. Just make a note that shea butter* is already very moisturizing, so you don’t need to have a heavy hand with your oils. Also, concentrated fragrance oils only require a few drops to make your mixture very fragrant.

Simply combine the ingredients together in a large mixing bowl. Use the mixer to give it a whipped consistency. At first your shea butter* will still be a little chunky, but you will notice that it becomes smoother the longer you mix. Also, make sure to HOLD ON to the bowl, and choose a bowl of a decent size when mixing so that you don’t make a gigantic mess in the kitchen (trust us, this is coming from experience!).

Afterwards, begin scooping the mixture into a Ziploc bag or icing bag. Cut a hole into the bottom corner of the Ziploc bag and squeeze the finished product into your glass container.

This is a great tip for a mess free transfer! Shake the container every so often so that you can fit as much product in as possible. In the video her mixture fit into 3 containers, but if you make smaller portions, you will of course only need one container.

Use a glass container like a mason jar, so that you won’t have to worry about the plastic oxidizing into your mix. That’s it!

We really love DIY butters*, because we can make them how we want. Play around with different fragrances to figure out what you do and do not like. Also feel free to swap out coconut oil* for something else, depending on what your needs are.

The best part is that it works for both hair and body! So try making your own butter this winter season, and keep yourself moisturized from head to toe without breaking the bank.
