Today is one of those drink hot cocoa and sit with a blanket days for me and on cold days like this doing a new hairstyle is out of the question.

I remember back in the day when I would take out my laptop and google hair styles for medium length hair, just so I would have a bunch of styles to try everyday of the next week.

If you think that was too much, add to that the fact that I would actually go out and buy the exact products needed for each style just to ensure that my hair would look like that of my favorite YouTuber of the moment.

Sound familiar?

Do not be surprised that even with all that preparation and watching the video in detail that your hair does not quite look like the girl on the screen. The truth is your hair will always do its own thing according to your unique hair pattern and state.

With that said, the key to hairstyle development is learning what your hair likes, allowing it to do what it likes to do, and keeping it healthy at all costs.

Here are 6 steps to developing your own style when it comes to styling your hair

Know what has worked for you

I keep a hair journal because I like to write down my products and tools that I use and what has worked for me. Keeping a hair journal may seem like a stretch, but you can create a plan for length goals more easily.

Sometimes you can even do this virtually. Sites like Pinterest have allowed people to display pictures on their boards.

You can start by taking pictures of all of your products that you are currently using and putting them on a Pinterest account and then recording the hairstyles that you have tried online too! If the woman on YouTube’s style is something you want to try, then do it but don’t do it at the expense of your wallet by going out and buying all of her products.

Get creative

Be a leader when it comes to your own styles. For example, instead of trying to nail one look, try combining two looks and see how creative you can get.

Also, I have discovered that using items not designated for hair styling have made my hair look much better. Next time you want to go for the same twist-out you’ve been rocking for the past year, pick up some shoestrings or go to the craft store to pick inspiration for a style. You can add just about anything to spruce up a style.

When you get creative you are naturally developing your own style and your own way of doing things so that you are not so dependent on a video for your inspiration.

Learn from your mistakes

There is no perfect natural, so don’t hide in your room when your hair does not have a perfect spiral. Your hair is most healthy when you are not forcing it to do something it isn’t made to do.

I figure if I mess up on a style, then the next time I do the same hairstyle I should be ready to do a better job. Hair styling is a work in progress, and you shouldn’t beat yourself up if you make mistakes.

So if you look in the mirror and you don’t feel #flawless, don’t be disheartened, but call it a part of the process of being natural.

Practice makes perfect

For intricate styles, like flat twists or corn rows, it might take you a while to get it down. The most important thing is that you keep practicing.

If you cannot flat twist at all watch a tutorial and try it again and again until you have it. You cannot expect your first twist out to turn out like the woman on YouTube who has been doing flat twists in her hair for years.

Get a signature style

Your signature style is that one style you will resort to if the hairstyles you are trying fails. It could be a bun, a puff, a fro, anything that you are great at and that always looks flawless.

If you have a signature hairstyle in your arsenal you can always fall back on it whenever things go wrong or if you are in a rush and do not have the time to try something new.

Health over aesthetics every time

Finally, even though this post is about hairstyle development we have to stress the point that regardless of the styles that you might pick always consider the health of your strands first.

If it’s a cold day, maybe a bun or a style that tucks the ends of your hair is ideal. If it’s a hot Summer day then you know you can get away with a fancy wash and go. When you think in this manner, you will be doing the best thing for your hair despite what ever hairstyle you might choose.
