My Mother JUST Found Out That I Cut My Hair Off When I Was 10

Now that I’m almost 27, my sisters, our mother, and I often sit back reminiscing about our childhood. The topic of hair comes up a lot being that 3 out of the 4 of us have given up relaxers within the last could of years.

The conversation usually revolves around the hilarious memories of doing relaxers at home, but recently the account of me cutting my own hair off and then lying about it came out.

I was 10 years old, about to head to 6th grade and my mom finally stopped putting those awful ponytails in my hair that screamed I was still a little girl.

Turning my head side to side and looking at my curled hair in the mirror, I wanted to try to do it myself. I wouldn’t dare touch a curling iron* because I knew if my mom caught me it would be over!

I grabbed a fine tooth comb, took a section in the front of my head, and started curling.

Yes, I seriously tried to curl my hair with a comb smh. Starting from the ends of my hair and wrapping and wrapping all the way up.

What most know about doing this with a comb is that it tends to leads to tangles. Why would anyone do this in the first place, I don’t know. But in the event that you do, you have to make sure you unwind the hair exactly in the way that it was done so that the hair goes back out the same way it came into between the teeth of the comb.

At 10 years old of course, I didn’t know this so I panicked as I tried to unwind the comb and only made it worse. There was no way I was getting this comb out and I was a little too embarrassed (and scared) to tell my mother so I grabbed a pair of scissors and chopped.

Boom, right in the front laid a patch of 0.5cm of hair. I combed the rest of my hair over in efforts to try to camouflage it and the next time my mom did my hair she asked what happened. Of course, I sat there in denial and she was seriously concerned that maybe it was the relaxer?

I finally came clean a few weeks ago and she said she would have beat my tail if she knew that that’s what really happened 17 years ago. Oh, childhood memories.
