How To Create A Bomb Twist Out + Product Recommendations

So you are on a mission to get the baddest twist out on the planet . Listen, I get it! I think out of all the simple styles a natural can do this one can be quite evasive.

Many of us go into the style with the best optimism, thinking “this is the one”, “I did everything right this time” and then the next morning comes along and your hair is either, limp, not dry or just not looking quite as you imagined.

We have all been there and honestly there is more to a bomb twist out than just product and technique. How you feel about your results have a lot to do with what you think your hair should look like once you are done.

With that said the first thing you should know is that my twist out will not look like your twist out and that is ok! Once you understand how your own hair behaves then all you now have to worry about is technique and products.

Technique

The base style to a great twist out is two strand twists and the more twists you have the more texture you will have when you unravel the twists.

For a loose chunky twist out you can do 5- 6 big twists in your hair and for very defined twists you can opt for 12-24 twists all over your head.

Other options include flat twists against your head with hanging twists or twist and curls created with two strand twists with a perm rod on the ends.

Personally, I absolutely recommend using a perm rod at the end of your hair despite how many twists you have or how you choose to install the twists. Perm rods* smooth the ends of the hair, you avoid single strand knots and all of your twists look consistent when you do the twist out.

Before the twists

The best styles start out on freshly washed hair because it gives your products a chance to work the way they should without interacting with old products and oils*.

If you are the girl that tends to avoid using a ton of product weekly then you might be able to get away with a bomb twist out without starting a full-on cleanse.

Products

Now for the fun part, what products should you use to create the best twist out ever? Here are my product recommendations all of which are reasonable and easy to find.

Cleanser – Carols Daughter Black Vanilla Moisture & Shine Sulfate-Free Shampoo

Carols Daughter Black Vanilla Moisture & Shine Sulfate-Free Shampoo

This shampoo does not strip your hair of moisture, it smells awesome and it gets rid of dirt and debris.

Conditioner – TRESemme Naturals Moisture Conditioner
tresseme

Tresemme is an oldie but goodie, and a staple for many of us. At just 3 bucks, you get a ton of product and your hair gets conditioned beautifully!

Leave in – As I Am Leave In Conditioner

As I Am

Hands down one of the best leave in I have tried in awhile, you cannot go wrong with this leave in and you can find it on Amazon or in any beauty supply store.

Oil – Elongtress Fancy Oil – Hair Growth Enhancer (Coconut & Almond)

Elongtress Fancy Oil

We aren’t trying to toot our own horn or anything but if we are going to recommend and oil this Summer blend is the best sealant you will find out there. It has Castor oil*, Grape Seed Oil and Coconut Oil* to seal the deal literally and figuratively.

Styler – Ecostyler Gel

Gel

Eco styler gel* is another staple for many of us, it’s cheap, it works, and it is easy to find. You can use a styling cream if you prefer but for women with kinkier textures, a little Eco style goes a long long way.

How to layer your products

For a bomb twist out you need to layer your products in this order after you cleanse – Leave-in conditioner*, oil, and then styler last. Make sure that your product is distributed evenly over each section before you twist focusing on the ends.

If you are using perm rods* at the end of your hair, smooth the ends over the roller and secure it so that you have no slipping overnight. Allow the hair to dry overnight or under a dryer! We cannot stress to you how important it is to have your hair dry completely, literally there will be no bomb twist out without dry twists.

Once you have done all the twists, cover your hair with a satin bonnet* for sleeping or if this is an intra-day style your only focus is having dry hair.

The next morning, coat your finger tips with just a little oil and unravel each twist carefully before separating. When all of your twists are unraveled then you can start to further separate, pick and fluff to your heart’s desire.
