Get Shiny Strands This Summer!

Young woman with shiny long straight hairNothing says summer hair more than soft, moisturized shiny hair!  Hair that is nice and juicy looking and has so much shine that the sun seems to just bling off its surface is the perfect and ultimate accessory to any summer look.  With these tips and tricks, you will definitely kiss dull and lackluster strands goodbye and slide into summer with shimmer!

Start from the Inside:  As has been stated over and over your hair is a reflection of your inner health.  The heat of summer can cause dehydration which will result in dry looking hair.  To combat this, drink plenty of water and lay off salty foods.

Start with Clean Hair:  Hair that has a lot of product buildup can leave a residue which causes the hair to have less shine.  Use a clarifying or chelating shampoo* to completely clean your hair to give you a nice fresh base.

Stay Moisturized:  You can glop on all the oil sheen you want but if your hair is not well moisturized, you may as well forget it.  Frequent deep conditioning* and moisturizing are a MUST for the summer!  Extras include co-washing and steaming, which also help boost moisture levels.  My hair loves glycerin-based products for the summer which seems to just draw moisture in from the humid air, so that is definitely a staple for me as well.

Lay off the heat:  Rollersets are a great option if you prefer straight hair but nothing says summer more than a head full of big curls, beach waves, or crinkly coils.  Naturals can rely on wash and go’s and all hair textures can utilize bantu knot, braid and twist outs to create heat free styles.

Protect your hair from the sun:  Hair products that contain SPF are not thought to be very effective but they cannot hurt.  The reason they are thought to be ineffective is because they don’t generally cover every single strand and with shedding and manipulation may not even stay on the hair as long as you need it too.  An easier way to protect from the harmful drying effect of the sun is to cover your hair with a hat or scarf if you know you are going to be in the sun for a while, say at the beach, for a cookout or even a morning jog.  Scarves and hats can be super chic and celebrity-like too!

Use Shine Products:  Oil sheens, glossers, and hair polishers are designed specifically to give the hair a shine.  Although these –cone laden products don’t have many health benefits for the hair, they do work wonders to create shine!  Just be sure to clarify regularly to keep your strands at their healthiest.

Use a Clear Rinse:  Clear rinses have many benefits, one of which is to give the hair an awesome shine.  Safe to use on all hair types (color treated and relaxed) clear rinses give a semi-permanent layer of shine.
