If there is one thing most natural girls hate about their hair, it is tangles. Wouldn’t it just be lovely to be able to run your fingers through your hair without being stopped by traffic? Knots and tangles are no joke they can cause severe breakage and also leave your hairstyle looking tired and unattractive.

There are a few ways you can avoid tangles and knots most of which we plan to discuss in this post, the key is keeping your hair moisturized and most of all stretched. Here are 3 ways you can keep knots and tangles at bay:

1. Keep hair moisturized at all times

Having moisturized hair reduces friction, which is what causes tangles. Pick a moisturizer that also helps with frizz so that your hair can have a silkier feel to it. Find a hydrating leave in conditioner* that has a few emollients in it so that your hair can get moisture but you have some ingredients that lock in that moisture as well.

One thing we would suggest is to make sure that you hair is sectioned well before you add product. Sometimes we smooth the product over our hair but forget to add moisture in between the sections making sure all strands are coated with moisturizer. You want to decrease the tangles throughout your entire head, so spend the extra few seconds to make sure that you are moisturizing properly.

2. Do a final detangling session

After you have thoroughly moisturized your hair, run your detangling tool through the section one more time, this helps to further smooth your product in but it is a great way to remove all shed hair from your head as well. Shed hair can get wrapped around your hair causing some serious knots that you might have to cut out.

The best way to detangle your hair is to start detangling with your fingers first by gently separating the hair and removing any visible shed hair and gently untangle any knots that you encounter. Then, follow up with a wide tooth comb* to remove and smooth all tangles, you can detangle a bit more with the denman brush* or a medium sized comb if necessary.

Remember to work in small sections and detangle from the ends of your hair to the root being patient and making sure you do not break your hair, there is nothing worse than that popping sound you hear because you rushed through the process.

braids3. Wear stretched styles

When you keep your hair stretched you will notice a drastic decrease in the amount of knots and tangles that you see in your hair. Stretched hair is less prone to tangles because there is less opportunity for your hair strands to hug and tangle onto the strand next to it, which is really how most tangles are formed.

Note that the key to getting more stretch from your style is to not style on dripping wet hair, wait for your hair to be 80% to 90% dry. This will reduce the amount of shrinkage you will get reducing tangles and increasing length retention. Now we cant talk about stretched styles without giving a few suggestions so we have a few you can try.

►Twists out styles are very easy to achieve and produce nice spirally curls. The bigger your twists the less defined it will be and smaller twists will give you a more defined look.

The key to great stretched twists is stretching them around your head and pinning them to your head overnight; This will elongate your curls for a banging twist out. Also, you can totally wear your twists for two days or so for an impromptu protective style and then take them down for the rest of the week.

►Braid outs are for some an all-time favorite style, because it offers great stretch and definition without stress. Yes, braids are more difficult to unravel but the great thing about braids is that you do not need to install a ton of them to get the stretch you need.

For a bit of flare you can leave about an inch or so at the ends of your hair unbraided and add perm rods* for more curls. If you haven’t tried a braid and curl before we encourage you to experiment and see if it works for you.

►Curl Formers are great for really stretching your hair and leaving you with very flattering curls. Just make sure that each section of hair that you put the curl former in is thoroughly detangled and product is smoothed onto the strands.

This will leave your hair silky and almost straight when you remove the curl formers. It can be a bit challenging to sleep in curl formers so you can sit under a hooded dryer* for 30 mins to set the style.

►Roller Sets are also great and super fun way to stretch the hair. You can use magnetic rollers*, perm rods*, or flexi rods* to set your hair. Again, make sure the hair smoothed and detangled before setting.

Another great tip is to roll the hair in a spiral motion upwards and never directly on top of each other. This will ensure that your hair will dry properly and leave you with spiral curls which are elongated.
