Is there any such thing as a perfect wash and Go? Maybe. I’m not sure if I have mentioned it before, but I am addicted to healthy hair care, and I get especially get excited about new techniques that pop up here and there.

I’m always looking for the next big thing that is coming up in the healthy hair world, no matter if it is: relaxed , natural, or in between hair. It’s always exciting to see how much our view on healthy hair care has evolved. So with that said, the other day as I was reading articles and blogs online and watching YouTube, I stumbled across a method called the “Anthony Dickey Method”.

I can just hear y’all now , “Okay, what the heck is an Anthony Dickey method and who the hell heck is Anthony Dickey? Well, to dive into this post, I’m going to start with the latter the who.

Anthony Dickey is a very popular and successful hair stylist from the Hair Rules Salon. If some of you guys do not know what Hair Rules is, Hair Rules was one of the first hair care lines to cater to naturally kinky*, curly, and wavy hair. Hair Rules also has a hair care salon which is located in New York City.

Anthony has been in the hair care business with a primary focus on curly hair for 20+ years, and has transformed the kinks and curls of celebrities such as Alicia Keys, Andre 3000, Sarah Jessica Parker, and Nicole Ari Parker.

What is the Anthony Dickey Method

The method is best broken up under three headings:

1. Cleansing- In the video below, Anthony Dickey starts off by applying a cleansing cream. He takes a liberal amount and applies it to HuffingtonPost blogger Julee’s hair, while detangling and “massaging” out the shed hairs.

2. Conditioning- Anthony then takes the conditioner and again applies a liberal amount to her hair. In this step, he emphasizes the importance of applying liberal amounts of whichever conditioner product that you choose to use.

He also makes a point of how he does not use a comb – and does not recommend using a comb – because it disturbs the curl pattern. We know that finger detangling is a gentle way to detangle our curls and kinks, and it cuts down on the breakage that we can experience with other tools, so that is definitely great advice.

Now for most of us, our curl pattern when wet can differ from our curl pattern when its dry. He goes on saying  that by applying your leave- in on sopping wet hair is the key to “locking” in your texture of sorts.

My Opinion: Now I have to admit, when he first mentioned that you can lock in your wet hair pattern, I was like…huh, no way! But the results spoke for itself.

In the video the final results looked  great; there was definition, movement, and shine compared to her Wash ‘n’ Go from before. It seems like a complete turnaround from the beginning of the session, where it seem to lack some of the results that she experienced after the session.

Here  is Anthony Dickey demonstrating his method in the video below; check it out!

I liked that throughout the video, Anthony Dickey said that you did not necessarily have to use the same products that he used. You can use any products that work for your hair, but just make sure that you apply large amounts of whatever hair product you use to your hair.

The thing that might bring a few side eyes is that the Anthony Dickey Method is very similar, if not the same kind of routine that we all are more than familiar with: wash, condition, styler or leave in, and then style hair as you desire. So it might not be his method so to speak, but rather something he has perfected.

Another thing we should make note of is that using large amounts of product might not work for everyone, so it is still important to know what your hair can take. If you have fine hair for instance, you may prefer lighter products with heavy application. Or if your hair is coarse you might not mind heavy products.

Additionally, if you use alot of product, be wary of product buildup. Therefore, using shampoo is a must if you experience this by the time you finish wearing your style.

We say give the method a shot to judge for yourself on whether this method is worth it or not, or if you just prefer to do the wash and go your old way. Either way, we want to know, would you try it? Or is this just more of the same stuff,  just wrapped in a different package?
