Is The Type 4 Wash And Go Really Taboo Or Is It All In Your Head?

1a

I would like you to address the misconception that only Type 3’s have wearable Wash and Gos, and that if you want your type 4 hair to look slightly decent, you will need a half a jar of Eco Styler gel*.

There are too many misconceptions that are floating around and getting stuck in our natural hair, seeping into our scalps and becoming thoughts and perceptions. Too much? Maybe.

But there is an injustice, so to speak, that is self-inflicted for the silliest things like, hair typing, restricting your ability to create any style that you desire. Too much again? Hardly!

There are too many naturals out here believing the hype that they cannot achieve a particular style because of a number they associate their tresses to on a hair typing scale. An example would be a woman with 4C hair trying to do a Wash and Go.

Some won’t even give it a chance, as they are convinced they do not have the right texture or the right coils to do a Wash and Go. Most of us already know that a true Wash and Go is more than just the act of washing and going. It doesn’t matter what side of the chart you fall on, you have to do something to your hair before the ‘go’ part. Here’s a true depiction of a wash and go:

Wash

Condition – rinse out or leave in

Apply leave-in

Apply gel

Scrunch

Diffuse (maybe)

Go

That’s a pretty standard Wash and Go, and l gather that there are a plethora of variations, but you get the gist. What you don’t get is that a woman with 4C (or any 4 for that matter) can achieve a beautiful Wash and Gonas well just like a woman with 3B or 3C hair.

Your goal should not be curl definition that looks like a type 3 pattern when wearing a Wash and Go. The object is to allow hair to air dry in its natural state, and accept the moisturized tresses in the shape and form that it dries in.

We are all unique, and that means we will have unique hair, and we will have unique styles. So what if we use the same products, and create the same style? It will still look different on every wavy, coily and curly haired woman that does it. Guess what? That’s perfectly OK, and actually the point. We are not the same – and neither is our hair – so stop looking for uniformity and replicas of someone else to fit some figment of your imagination.

1bPersonally, I knew that I could do twist outs, but every time I tried, they come out not looking the way I would prefer. Eventually, I decided that I didn’t like them, and chose not to do them.

That doesn’t mean that I can’t create the style; it just means I either haven’t found the right product and technique, or I’m expecting something other than what I am getting. Either way, it doesn’t mean I cannot create and wear the style, it is literally my issue, and not my hair’s.

We want to encourage you to stop putting limitations on your hair because of your perception of what is standard, and rock any style you want including the Wash and Go.

If you are type 4, you can rock a wash and go just like a 3C can rock a chunky twist out. Your hair is unique; you can create your own personal Wash and Go, so say goodbye to the flawed way of thinking, and embrace a new outlook on your hair and your mindset. We have two demonstrations that will show you just how to do it.

Wash And Go on 4C Hair with Eco Styler gel*:

Stella Muadika shares her variation of a Wash and Go on 4C hair. She does a stellar job, and gives herself amazing lift, definition and volume.  She uses a comb to evenly distribute the gel throughout each section and she uses a diffuser* at the roots, and the regular dryer (not too close) to dry her hair, and give her the lift she’s looking for. She ends up with a Wash and Go that has movement, height, and life that is on point and perfect.

Donedo brings us a slightly different Wash and Go, where shaking is a major component in the process. A dryer and diffuser* is also used in her technique, but she shares two different products, and shows how they look in her hair from day 1 to day 3.

Both women have amazing looks, and we see that it’s all about the product and technique which helps them to pull off the style. You can choose to use Eco Styler Gel* to get more curl defining hold, or you can use a lighter product for that curly fro look that is so popular right now. Now, get in that shower and give the Wash and Go a chance, will ya?!
