How To Install Flexi Rods On Natural Hair

hqdefault (5)To the newbie naturalista, getting the perfect rod set may seem like an impossible task. Personally, I’ve been natural for almost two years and I still find it difficult getting my rod sets to look nice. There are a variety of products and methods that you can use, and your final look will be based on your preferences. It takes trial and error to find the perfect technique for you, and YouTube is a great place to find inspiration.

When purchasing flexi rods*, first decide how large you want the curls to be. Larger flexi rods* mean looser curls, while smaller flexi rods add more curl definition and will give more of a spiral look. You can buy and use both at one time to play around with the size of your curls.

One easy way to install flexi rods in natural hair is to start on clean, fresh, and twisted hair. This will require less flexi rods* and less time. In the video, she does about ten to fifteen twists.

Yolanda did both regular twists and flat twists over her head, depending on how she wanted the style to turn out.Twisting hair beforehand and allowing it to dry overnight will also give you stretched curls as a final result. You can go the extra step in stretching your hair by placing bobby pins* at the roots of your twists.

Grab one twist and place the end of it over the flexi rod, which you should be holding horizontally. Secure it with a finger and roll once, so that the flexi rod* doesn’t unravel or come out – which is common issue when first installing a rod set.

Once you know that it’s secure, take the rod and roll upwards. You can either roll inwards, moving towards the scalp, or outwards. You can space out the hair as you roll up, so you have a looser spiral curl when you’re done. Afterwards, bend the two ends of the flexi rod into your scalp to further secure it. It should look like the ends of the flexi rod* are cuffing the hair.

The purpose of flexi rods* are to both curl and stretch our hair. This, combined with a fabulous twist out, will give you well defined and soft spiral curls. Using a combination of rod sizes will volumize and accentuate different areas of your hair with increased curl definition. After some practice, anyone will be able to master a flexi rod set!
