Frequently Asked Questions:

1.) Which hair dyes did you use again?

I used a 50/50 mixture of Punky Color's "Plum" and "Violet. In other words, we bought one jar of each, mixed them together, and applied the mixture to Susannah's head.

2.) Was the first application of "Plum" necessary to achieve the final result?

Honestly, I can't guarantee anything. That's the way we did it, but it may not be necessary to achieve the final color. I'd guess that the first application of "Plum" didn't affect the final result much. In other words, I believe that you could skip that step and get pretty much the same result.

3.) Will this hair dye show up on my dark hair?

If your hair is dark brown or black, this purple dye will NOT show up well. It'll simply be a purple tint in sunlight. Your hair MUST be medium brown or lighter for this dye to show up at all. It's like a purple stain. A purple stain doesn't show up on a dark canvas. Therefore, if your hair is dark, you must lighten it beforehand. Yes, you may need to bleach it!

4.) How long does the hair dye last?

The dye is semi-permanent and is supposed to last 2-4 weeks. It lasted around a month for Susannah and was still very bright. Unfortunately, she then dyed her hair dark brown for a play. So who knows, it might have lasted longer. The longevity of hair dye varies from person to person, so be prepared.

5.) Is this hair dye permanent?

No, it is semi-permanent. Read the answer to the question above.

6.) Where can I buy this hair dye?

You can buy Punky Color at ULTA and online at:

http://jeromerussell.com/product/punky...

7.) How much does the hair dye cost?

$8 to $10

8.) My hair is dyed a different color at the moment. Can I apply this purple hair dye over it? Will it turn purple?

If your hair is dyed a different color, fade it as much as you can before applying the purple dye. If your hair is dyed a natural color with a box dye (for example, black), remove it with a color remover. ColorFix and Color Oops are reliable color removers. If your hair is dyed a semi-permanent bright color (for example, Manic Panic pink), strip it with dandruff shampoo and hot water. Also try the vitamin C treatment (it worked for me!). Look it up online. :)

9.) How do I remove this purple hair dye? For school, work, etc.

Give yourself a window of a couple weeks to fade this hair color. Then strip it with dandruff shampoo and hot water. Also try the vitamin C treatment (it worked for me!). Look it up online. If your hair is still slightly stained after stripping it, you may have to dye it back to your natural color.

10.) What color was Susannah's hair to start off with? Was it virgin hair?

Susannah's hair was a light golden brown. Yes, her hair was virgin (it had never been dyed before).

11.) How do I make my hair dye last longer?

Shower in cold water, use a color-protection shampoo, wash your hair less often (I know, gross, but dry shampoo works in a pinch), and refresh your color. When I say refresh, I mean keep a tub of your hair dye in the shower, and apply it like a conditioner every couple of weeks. Then wash it out after 5-10 minutes. It'll help boost your color. :)

12.) Is there a purple or blue dye available for DARK hair without pre-bleaching?

As far as I know, there aren't any bright purple or blue dyes that work without pre-bleaching dark hair. What you're searching for is a hi-lift dye (a dye that turns dark hair a bright color without pre-bleaching). The only hi-lift dye I've seen for a crazy hair color is Loreal Hicolor Hilights in "Red". I have never seen a hi-lift dye in purple or blue. Basically, if you want bright purple or blue hair, you have to lighten your dark hair first.

13.) How do I get the same purple color with Manic Panic or Directions?

I'm not sure, because I've never made this color with those brands. However, I can look at the color swatches and make an educated guess:

Manic Panic: Mix "Purple Haze" and "Ultra Violet"

Directions: Mix "Plum" and "Violet".

Obviously, I can't guarantee that these combinations will make the same purple color. So take my word with a grain of salt. x)

Hey YouTube so the other day my friend Suzanne asked me if I would dye her hair purple. So, of course I said yes, we started off with a jar of plum from donkey color. However, halfway through the process, we found out that that was not enough to cover Susanna's hair. Luckily, we managed to save the day and I think the tutorial turned out pretty great hope. You guys, like it okay. So what you're gon na need is dye. Brushable oil slim shiny, something like that: hair, color, blush brush, okay and a friend. I actually know a secret that I've never heard anyone else say, but Clorox wipes get dye off of your skin. Amazingly. Well, thanks! I'M erasing I'm get rid of all your. I can speed up the audio though they sound, like mom, so slow it down when we sound like we're running low on light, it's making me nervous, not really okay. So this is the point where I knew that I was in deep trouble. Cuz. If you did not have enough hair dye, it turns out streaky and Brookes, and Susanna had already expressed hesitancy towards dyeing her hair, because she'd never done anything like this before and I had screwed it up. Luckily, my mom offered to buy two new jars of punky color the next day, so I told her to buy one jar of plum like we started off with and a jar of violet to mix it with, because when the plum was developing, I realized that it Was turning out more of a pink than a purple, but I figured that mixing the plum and the violet would create a grape color after we mix the two colors and applied them to Susanna's hair. We left it like that for about three hours and then washed. It out - and these are the results, so this is Susanna's new hair. After the second die, it's a really pretty dark purple color and it turned out really nice. I didn't know: hair could turn out this nice, it's uniform grape purple and it smells like grapes. What do you think Suzanna? What'S your verdict delicious? So I hope you guys liked that tutorial. I would like to apologize for not posting a lot of videos lately I'll try to post a new tutorial before the end of the month, and I just want to tell you guys. I love you because you're worth it,

DyeYoung: PSA: I answered your most frequently asked questions in the description of this video, so check it out if you wanna know how long it lasts, whether it will show up on dark hair, etc. Thanks and happy hair dying! ^__^

terra grabowski: if this isn't the most 2013 thing I've ever seen I dont know what is lmao

ohstephyy: That is literally the color i want my hair.

Bjorn Jackson: I just did this and it looks fantastic! Thank you for the awesome video and instructions!

Canan Murray: She pulls off that color incredibly well.

Taryn: I love that shade of purple, it looks really nice !

Rachel Ono: This is almost exactly the color I envisioned on me. I love it!

Cameron: Thanks so much for the awesome tutorial. I just finished dying my hair (just have to rinse it out) I hope it turns out as beautiful as that

Dominique G: BEST TUTORIAL IVE SEEEN!! & EXACTLY THE SHADE I WANT, THANK YOU SO MUCH (:

Isabelle Scherbovich: Her hair looks gorgeous! I'm dying my hair purple tomorrow with the Punky Color purple (not violet or plum, their color that is labeled as purple) and I hope it turns out as good as Susannah's did!

TheSickestVik: I have relatively dark brown hair and I dyed it with the same dye as in the video and it came out really nice the only downside is that its only been two weeks and its faded a lot, but the color is still there. All in all it was a fun experiment!

Rock n Roller: Dohh I need to do this with my hair :O Looks awesome! Thanks for this video, it really helped me out!

Just Te Marie: Hey! I just wanna say this helped a lot because I've been wanting to dye my hair for some time now but didn't know how it would turn out! So thanks you helped me out a lot!!

Alex Rose: This is great!! I'm wanting to dye for the first time and I have red hair. Her hair kinda looks like mine, and I was going with a reddish purple. So seeing it can be done without bleach is great! Yay!

Amy Carnegie: I love this color.. I've been dying my hair purple over top of my natural brown hair and it just creates a tint of purple in sunlight. Now I know all I have to do is lighten a shade or two and mix the two colors. I'm excited now haha. Thank you I thought this video was extremely helpful Ps I'm glad to read this hair dye seemed to stay in as well.

lifeofaboxbot: Thanks so much for this. My friend has wanted purple for a long time but hasn't wanted to bleach her naturally red locks. This is by far the bed tutorial (: Ps your face is mega adorable (:

DyeYoung: +Rainbow Kitties In my opinion, Manic Panic doesn't last as long. But yes, it is the same sort of dye. See #13 for mixing tips. And no, you don't have to mix it with anything else. Just blend the 2 colors and apply it to your hair. Keep in mind, your hair must be light enough for the pigment to show up! :)

Zina Thomas: Thanks I tried both the Plum and Midnight Blue and it worked great on my dark brown natural hair. Love it!

supsoup1000: What color would show up the best on dark brown hair without bleaching?

Maria CraftyRia Johnson: Thank you for this video! I've been trying to add some purple to my hair without bleaching it. I tried the Ion Permanent Color which was really easy to use, but I want a bit more purple. So I purchased a tube of the Ion semi-permanent vibrant purple to experiment. I tried it this morning (before watching your video) and obviously one tube wasn't enough, it's also very thick and hard to apply evenly. So my hair is much like your friend's was the first day. I'll have to go back to the store and buy some more and give it another go. I'll get two colors similar to yours and mix them up. Your video is awesome, thanks so much.

QueenOfAmber: THANKS SO MUCH :D It's so hard to find a hair tutorial on dying without using bleach/developer so thanks a bunch. <3 And both your hair looks beautiful. :3

EricaYE6: I love it!  The exact purple I've been looking for.  Punky Colour in plum and violet.  Got it.  Thank you!!  :)

NativeAmericanSpirit92: I so love your hair!! I dyed mine black last week and wanted to dye my bangs purple using Feria and it did not do anything lol. Now that I know how to do the multi colored look thanks to you I will try it again next time I have to dye it

Cha: Thank you very much for your video, i was looking for a vid like this one since a big while (finding a dying hair video without bleach is pretty hard, more harder when you don't find your whished color) so i'll give it a shot ! :D

five degrees on a friday: This is really amazing! Love the color

Valerie Isabelle: I've dyed my hair with Manic Panic Rock 'n Roll Red a few months ago without bleach, and my hair was Ariana Grande red (I've also got a medium brown haircolor). I loved it! Now, a few months later, I'm planning to dye my hair purple just like you without bleach, but I prefer a brighter purple.. but I can't get that without bleach.. :S Does anyone have any ideas how to make the purple a little bit lighter on my hair?

Payton Lopez: Question: How long did the hair dye last? I'm dying my hair next month but my mom doesn't want me to bleach it, so I'm looking into dyes that last longer without bleach. Thanks!

CakeFace: Wow good job, the colour is gorgeous. This is the colour I want my hair to be

Aylin N: your video was great and it really helped a lot! best tutorial i've seen :)

De ath: Thank you soooo much for this video! I bought the same two dyes and did the same thing to my hair. Ofcourse, I had to bleach mine before hand cause I have black hair.

Beth Mills: Wow it's so pretty! thinking of doing mine purple.

Yasmin Shiraz: I'm always searching for new ways to fix my hair. Thanks for producing your videos. Peace, Yasmin

Teddybear: this said no bleach, but my hairs too dark :'(

trinity clark: Thanks! I am dying my hair purple and it is a darker colour. This helped!

Mia Juiliano: Dawn soap is actually great for getting hair dye off your scalp and forehead...I know it sounds wired but when you wash your hair after dyeing it just use some dish soap before washing it and conditioning it with shampoo and conditioner! Hope that was helpful to anyone out the dyeing their own hair

Rowan Archibald: Wow! Thankyou sooooo much for making this video, has made my day. Will deffinently try it out!

sherly stephanie: Thank you for the tutorial! I've been looking all over for this shade of purple! This might be a weird question, but I have a medium-dark skin colour. Will this shade of purple suits me or will it make me look weird?

Alura: awesome! im dyeing my best friends hair a galaxy ombre of arctic fox blue and purple, and i have dyed hair before myself but never an ombre galaxy. if u could do some sort of tutorial on that subject that would be great! thank you!

Lauren Shotts: I love your video :) Her hair looks great!!!

Kiana Wills: Question: I've been trying to dye my hair purple, not bright, but a subtle dark purple so I tried deepest plum 3ARR from l'oreal. But it was turning my hair red after a couple weeks. So I decided to get it professionally dyed, but it still turns out red! My hair is naturally brown, but now a red-plum colour. Any suggestions to get a deep permanent purple colour?

Amanda H: Wow I can't believe how amazing that came out without any bleach! I'm going to give Punky Color a go if I can find it in Australia.

DyeYoung: +Serena G Sorry, but you'll have to bleach it first. :( The dye only shows up on light brown hair or lighter. If you apply it to dark hair, it'll only appear as a slight purple tint. :)

Victoria Afolabi Aiyelokun: I love her purple hair it is my favourite colour and I always wanted to die my hair purple it looks so amazing and gorgeous

HighImAmanda o: YAY FINALLY!! I have been looking through a ton of videos and finally found one with the color I like!!!! How long did it stay in her hair?

anais champin: Hey! Im experimenting dying my brown virgin hair too. One question, did you really leave it 3 hours? does it damage your hair to leave it for too long?

Ailyn Solis: I love this tutorial! Hopefully I'll dye my hair blue or purple soon.. any advice?

PinkCrushScooter: Nice , I love both of your hair colors . Beautiful.

pleapoh natzi: I have very dark, dark hair and it's virgin hair. I'm planning to dye my hair a light brown so that i can dye it to this kind of purple. What dye would you suggest for a light brown? and how much time should i give my hair a rest before i dye it to this? :) Great video by the way! really enjoyed watching it :)

doveyxoxo: This was so helpful thank you!

becca moses: At this point I've been doing this for a year. First time I dyed my hair, I used manic panic, and it worked. Sort of. It showed up as pink and faded after about two washes. This can last me like two months, and shows up as awesome bright purple in the sun, and a cool toned black inside. A+ would recommend.

Smile Aranas: OMG! THANKS! THIS IS REALLY HELPFUL!! I really want to dye my hair, but I', afraid to use bleach so yeah!! Thanks!

mishyprizes: I really like how that came out. I might try it this summer. I have an ombre purple(almost electric) on the ends. I'm going to try the all over purple :-)

Meet The McNetts: her hair came out so pretty you did a good job

DyeYoung: +Renee Hernandez Yup, it didn't cause damage because Punky Color doesn't contain peroxide. It's more of a stain than a dye. :)

DyeYoung: +Julie Bjorn If your hair is darker, you may need to lighten it regardless of what purple shade you choose. See #3 in the description for more information. However, if you feel like your hair is light enough, go for it. I don't have much experience with the "Purple" shade, though! :)

DyeYoung: @Jasmin Irizarry If you bleach your hair to a dirty blonde like Susannah's, you should get a very similar result! Just be careful not to apply the purple over orange or banana-yellow hair. Toning after bleaching will help get rid of those brassy tones. :)

Meowmeow: So I thought that combination of colours you used made a great hair colour, so I tried it myself (first time hair dying). It was purple for about a week, then it slowly became the colour(s) I currently have: light blue coloured hair with purple at the roots. Actually it looks even cooler this way, but what exactly did I do wrong? (Oh, and I bleached it)

Carolina Huerta: I love how her hair turned out!

Vic-Zon Cunanan: I also wanna color my hair purple, just like that! By the way that was awesome but I also wanna know how long will it last on a regular hair? :) thanks!

Skylar Denise: YES! FINALLY! I needed to see a head of hair that ISNT BLEACH BLOND! It's nice to see how it'll look because I refuse to bleach my hair. I might do purple or blue, it's between those

Ashley TH: Hello there, I am a hair virgin, and my hair color is basically the same color as your friend's. I am willing to dye it purple but I've got a few problems, mainly with my mother haha. Anyway, you've mentioned on your description some frequently asked questions, saying that the dye remained on your friend's hair for about a month or so, but she had to dye it back to brown for a play. So would the dye actually start to fade after a month? And if she hadn't dyed it brown, would it have stayed? I just really want to make sure that it will fade on a given time between 2 weeks to a month. And would it ruin my hair? My mother is really concerned about these two things I've asked mainly. Thank you in advance for this great tutorial! If it was my choice, I'd definitely go for it right away!

Aven Wright-Egbert: Thanks so much! I've been trying to find a good way to dye my dark brown (almost black) hair purple for ages. Question: Will this still work, even if my hair is darker?

DyeYoung: @jackie martinez Unfortunately, Manic Panic or Punky Color wont show up well on dark hair. If you don't bleach it, it'll be a subtle tint in sunlight, nothing more. So I'd recommend bleaching it first if you want it to show up. As for jars, buy 2 or more. It's always better to have more than less (you can use the extra for touch-ups). If you want purple, use the colors listed in the video (Plum and Violet) and mix them 50/50. I really like the brand Punky Color. :) Good luck!

Hayley Rose: OMG yes FINALLLLLY I’m about to dye my hair purple and this is the first video I’ve seen using punky color :, )))

Kate Cobain: yes this is definitely how I want my hair!!

DyeYoung: +Marie Sorenson Yes, apply vaseline to your skin to prevent staining. :)

Rissa Amber: Nice video very helpful! My hair is almost exactly like Susannah's but I have natural blonde and red streaks what kind of blues should I use? Also I wanted to do two colors do you know anything about doing that like so the top is dark blue and then the bottoms lighter. Any help would be greatly appreciated thanks before hand :)

DyeYoung: It depends how dark your hair is. If it's light brown, then it'll turn out like Susannah's. If it's medium brown, it'll turn out purple, but with brown undertones. If it's really dark brown/black, it'll just be a purple tint. :) And yup, this tutorial involves just dye and tinfoil. No bleaching involved!

space kid: thanks for makin this video, my hair turned out perfectly!! also the plum that was first on her hair didn't make a difference if someone was wondering

Dezeraé: When you rinse out the dye is it still runny, i remember it being really runny and taking forever to wash it from your hair after waiting

Erol Quiambao: I'm going to dye my hair for the first time today! I'm nervous and excited at the same time, thanks for the tips tho

R. Jones: This looks sooo good!

Twinks: Absolutely great video. Straight to the point and all the information. Other videos are 12-16minutes long for no good dang reason (with editing and speeding up!) Anyway, way to go

DyeYoung: +kitty goes rawr meow You'll definitely need to pre-lighten your hair before dying it light blue. You'll need to be light blonde for the color to show up correctly! :)

DyeYoung: @kiara gualtieri It lasts anywhere for 2 weeks to a couple months. Yes, it fades and should eventually wash out entirely. :)

Saraline: hiiii!!! so i'm going to try and use your tutorial on dyeing my hair. Question. how many jars did you buy/use to dye Suzy's hair? and my hair is Dark Brown, will the color show if i mix plum/violet with an Ash/Grey dye? :)

Tristan Grihp: OMFG! THIS TUTORIAL SAVED ME! I want purple hair really bad, but i dont want to bleach. SO THANKS! c:

Jasmin Irizarry: Thanks so much! Gonna try it this weekend. :)

Pam Huiskes: so is it necessary to use the first jar as well to reach this exact same result or can i just mix the other two and apply it on my light brown-ish hair right now? my hair is about the same length as Suzanne's. Really nice tutorial btw and i loveee your hair! :)

chelseth: do you think this would work on dark brown to black hair without bleach?(: btw this video was sick haha finally a tutorial on hair dyeing with good editing and people with personalities (: haha

Lara Wolf Moon: Nice! Realy pretty color. Similar results can be achieved with Manic Panic. I'm currently using Purple Haze on brown hair.

entropy: I did this with red instead of purple. At first I only wanted to do my bangs, and I had used manic panic. I loved it so much I went out and bought a jar of punky color in fire, and since the manic panic was more pink toned, while the fire was more orange toned, I got this beautiful shade of dark reddish magenta. Not a single drop of bleach was used. Plus my hair smelled like pixie sticks when I was done!

DyeYoung: @Isa Jage Yup, Manic Panic and Directions are both semi-permanent dyes similar to Punky Color, so the results should be about the same. :) And thank you!

Angela Workman: It looks beautiful I love that color

DyeYoung: +Lisa Davis I got the hair dye from ULTA and it is semi permanent (it should last 2 weeks to a month). :)

Chau Tran: Hey, I really want to dye my hair purple. How long did your color last? How often do you have to redye it?

jqhua0: How long does the dye last? I was thinking about dying my hair to purple in that exact color !

The Thrifty Fawn: Excellent job ladies! ❤

vanessa estrada: Lol ya made me laugh nice video, I actually recently dyed my hair hot pink using ions Magenta semi-permanent by color brilliance from my local Sally beauty supply and I left it on for like 6 hrs, but my hair was not virgin hair I actually had to bleach it 1st but it camed out wonderful the colors are truly vibrant and I just used 2 boxes for my whole long hair it camed out very soft I love it ❤

DyeYoung: +Lemmy O After the first wash, it looked the same! It took a month for it to start fading. :)

Stephanie_EB: Funny video and the hair color looks awesome ! Great job

Danyhawke: Nice work! Thank you!

Red: you did a great job! would you ever dye your hair rainbow color? :)

Ariel Franco: My hair lasted a week when I used semi-permanent. Any advice on how to make it last longer? (my hair wasn't bleached and it was a virgin)

DyeYoung: +Sara Diz If your ginger hair is light enough, yes, the purple dye will show up. :)

DyeYoung: +Ashlee W It lasted about a month. I honestly don't think the first application of plum affected the final color much. Read #2 in the description for more info. :3

Eclipsa: You guys remind me of myself when I was little--and the last bit cracked me up! XD Are you still the same after all these years? It depresses me a little how I'm no longer that quirky and bubbly. Watching this surprisingly gave me some nostalgic feels xD

petriholic: yes it did helped me a lot! thanks! :)

DyeYoung: @TheSickestVik Yay, I'm glad it worked out for you! Sorry about the fading...that's the only downside to brightly colored hair...it doesn't stay long! :(

Devon Drake: I would not recommend this specific method. I dyed my hair the same method from this video using the same products. The dye just sat on my hair and rubbed off on just about everything all the time (clothes, bed, boyfriend, neck, ears) And I struggled to try to maintain the color for even one wash and found the only way was to either not wash your hair or use dry shampoo every time. Also as a warning if you've ever lightened your hair or had highlights the dye will penetrate that hair and when the dye is washed out of your natural hair (which DyeYoung does mention the girl has virgin hair) you will have bright barney purple in your highlighted or lightened hair. I am writing this after having much more experience now on how to dye your hair unnatural colors with more manageable results (more like DyeYoung's other video's on dyeing hair, my hair has been dark purple, periwinkle, steely purple and steely blue). And I just don't see this specific method ever being useful. My opinion now to unnatural hair colors is if you're hesitant at all and if your have medium to long hair is just buy a ~30$ wig. Much better, consistent color, almost always looks nicer than your real hair and less cost on upkeep, you get to see what you'd look like first and guess what doesn't damage your hair. I was skeptical at first too but, give it a try before you decide to dye your hair an unnatural color using bleach if you have long hair especially. Because there's just no going back after you've stripped the color from your hair. Good luck on getting your ideal hair!
