What'S up rainbow heads welcome back to my channel for those of you who have been here before welcome back for those of you joining me for the first time, hello? How are you my name is Caitlin Ford. I am a ten-year veteran hair stylist, as well as an award-winning hair colorist, who specializes in really really weird hair color. Today I am super excited because today your rainbow hair fantasies can be our little secret because today is all about hidden hair color. I won't tell if you don't it's actually, because it was comment that I get pretty frequently on my Instagram account as well as here on my youtube channel, and that comment is. I really wish that I could have fun hair color, but my work won't allow it. So today I am super super excited to be showing you guys, some really cool, hair inspiration, that's going to be all about hidden, hair color. I am super fortunate to work in an industry where I don't really have to worry about crazy, hair, color or tattoos. In fact, I feel like as a hairdresser, it's almost like you're taken more seriously. If you have weird hair or tattoos people kind of view you as like artistic, and they seem to think that you are more creative, because you have these things and I do feel like as a whole. Society is sort of becoming a little bit more. Accepting of things like tattoos and fun, hair color as a form of self-expression. However, I know that is not the case for everyone. So today is all about helping. You live your best, freaky hair life, no matter what job you work at. I wanted to help. Give you guys an option to think about different ways that you could wear your hair on the weekends to kind of show off fun, hair color, when it's a little bit more acceptable for you guys to do so. So I am super super super excited about today's video, also by the way guys, my voice is cracking because I am starting to get a little bit sick, Happy Holidays to me. So if I sound a little weird in this video, that is why but yeah like I said, I am so excited to get started with this video. So I'm gon na stop blabbing and let's head right into the tutorial, we're going to be doing two different, hidden hair looks today on the same head of hair, and obviously you guys don't have to do both of these on one head of hair. You could pick your favorite do one or the other, or both of them if you're feeling super super extra, but the most important part about doing hidden, hair color is to make sure that you're sectioning is exactly how it needs to be, and what I mean by That is your hair. Color is going to end up being kind of set back internally inside of the hair, we're kind of creating it in positions that we'll be able to reveal it and styling in certain ways. But we want to make sure that we leave hair around our color-block section. That'S going to allow us to pull the hair back into a ponytail or wear the hair down and you're not going to see the color peeking through. So the most important part about this is making sure that you leave a little bit of hair in front of your section and around your section to make sure that the hair color is covered up. So you want to allow a gap of natural hair around the hairline along the face, as well as above the ear. You want to make sure that your color box section isn't so high up that you can see it when the hair is down either. Now, in general, I will say that this placement is going to work, ideally on somebody who doesn't have a lot of layering in the hair. Only because if you have a lot of layers, there's not going to be as much hair to kind of hide our hidden panels. So that's definitely something to keep in mind as well. For someone who does have a lot of layers in the hair. One way that you can still give them this option is to not take the hair color all the way down the hair strand, so you're not going to bleach out all the way to the end of your color-block section, maybe bring it down part of the way And then leave the natural color towards the end so that it's not peeking through from underneath the hair, we're gon na start by prepping our section by lightening out with some foils here, and you guys are going to notice at the very top of this section. There. Actually is a bleached band that is already in this hair, and that's because I was practicing a technique on this mannequin. I was actually trying to figure out Pixel hair, which I have not quite figured out how to nail yet but someday. I will nail it and I will share share it with you guys once I do get it down, but, as you guys can imagine, I have spent quite a bit of my own money on wigs and mannequins lately. So yeah we're definitely not going to let a perfectly good man. I can't go to waste just because it's got a little bit of a bleach band in here. So just pretend that that's not there you're, probably not going to have to deal with something like that. On a client or on your own hair, unless you've been up to some really really weird stuff on your own hair, once the hair is the desired level of lightness, you can go ahead and pull your foils out. Mannequins, typically, will not lighten past a certain level without the hair melting off, so you do have to be a little bit more conservative with them than you would be with like virgin hair, just something to keep in mind if you're playing with a mannequin and because Of how delicate mannequin hair tends to be, I didn't want to overlap that bleach band too much and then end up breaking off this section and basically wasted mannequin head. So there is a tiny little bit of imperfection, as you can see at the very base of this, but that's okay, we're just going to move on with our lives and continue on with the rest of our rainbow hair, without stressing about it too much. I am doing yet another progressive placement here today, just because I really enjoy doing it. I think there are a lot of fun and I'm just not sick of doing it. Hopefully, you guys aren't sick of seeing it yet, but because the section is so small, I wanted to make sure that I represented every stripe of rainbow color at the top of the section. So I went ahead and pre sectioned off my section just to make sure that I had like an even amount of color in each little stripe at the top of the hair, because I'm just a little bit of an obsessive perfectionist with this stuff. If you guys have been watching my videos for a bit, the style of placement is already going to be familiar to you, but for those of you who are new, this placement results in diagonal lines in the color. I'M applying my color to my first section. In reverse, rainbow order, starting with violet and then continuing the rainbow down and repeating that pattern, all the way down the section until it is completely covered in color, with each new section, we're basically just building in the exact same pattern at the base of our color. Blocking as we have created down the length of the hair, so in my new section, I'm starting with magenta and then repeating my pattern down the hair and in the next section I start with orange, then yellow then green. And finally, I start with blue. In the last section, and as you can see in our finish, color-block we've created a harmonious pattern along the entire section. The sense of creating this really cool diagonal movement in our color placement, and I just really really love the effect of this. Which is why I keep doing it over and over again, if you think this is pretty cool and you're new here, I highly recommend you check out some of my other videos, such as my holographic hair video and my holographic mermaid hair video, which feature very similar Placement per second hidden hair, color idea, I'm going to be doing something that was really popular actually back when I first started doing creative color back in 2015 as well as 2016. I would say those two years. This particular technique was very popular. It'S something called under lights and basically under lights, just means we're hiding hair color in the back of the head underneath the rest of the hair. Obviously, this kind of like two-tone color, where the underneath of somebody's hair color, is different from the top of the hair. It is not a brand new thing I mean this has been around for a really long time. I remember two-tone color being a big thing back in even the 90s, but the real key thing with the sectioning for this particular placement is to not bring the color much higher than the occipital bone and for those of you who aren't hairstylist those of you who Aren'T familiar with what the occipital bone is. If you touch the back of your head with your hand and slowly bring your hand downward, you can feel that there is a part of your skull that begins to dip. In word, at the point where your neck meets the base of your skull, so that drop-off point in your skull where things begin to taper in that is called the occipital bone. So it's that highest point in the back of your skull. So for my sectioning, I like to go just above the occipital bone, not really typically any higher than that, and it's important to make sure that if you want this to be a truly hidden hair color that you don't go too high up with your sectioning. Because if you go too high, when the hair is down, you will see the color kind of breaking through the hair. I'Ve sectioned the back off across the head from the top of one ear to the other, just above where the occipital bone would be, and I also love sections out along the hair. So if my client aka, my mannequin, were to pull her hair back into a ponytail you're, not going to see that hair color peeking through from underneath either and from here we're gon na go ahead and foil across our section to prepare for our color and then We'Ll pull our foils out when our canvas is the appropriate level of lightness for a color and then we'll be utilizing. The same. Progressive placement pattern in the back of the hair, we're gon na, be headed into our fun magical, relaxing hair, color montage here in a second, it's definitely one of my favorite parts of these videos. I hope you guys enjoy these montages as well. I think that they're, just like super enjoyable and satisfying to watch personally, maybe I'm a little biased, but I don't know but before we do that, I wanted to drop in a couple of additional little tips here. For you guys, I'm starting off by using a piece of foam mesh to paint my sections against. This is a product that is made by from our, and I know that waste is becoming a really really big deal within the beauty community and just the world in general. It is something that I try to think about because, unfortunately, especially in the hair in the beauty industry, there is a lot of waste generated. So just you know these foam mesh strips are absolutely reusable, so, unfortunately, the material itself is not recyclable, but they are in fact reusable. I'Ve been using the same few boxes of mesh strips for probably about eight months or so now. So as long as you take good care of them, they will last for you. All you have to do, is rinse them off and dry them, and they are ready to reuse on multiple clients and for multiple projects. One of my quick tips for cleaning mesh strips is you can throw them in the washing machine, just throw them on the rinse cycle with cool water, and you are good to go. That is the quickest way to clean these. If you plan on using this particular tool, you can also use aluminum foil. If you don't have mesh strips on hand, I personally like mesh strips because they're a little bit more firm, a little bit more stable. It does give a little bit more of a stable surface to paint on another tool that I use in my coloring, which you guys have seen before if you've watched. My other videos is this clear, balayage film. I use this to press my new sections against my old sections. This really helps with saturation so that we get really nice even color. That'S not super spotty. The volley I feel and that I use is called funked up film, which is also by frame R, and it is biodegradable another tip that I have in regards applying this color method in a little bit more of a time efficient way, which, let's be honest, like There'S barely any way to make this more time efficient, anytime you're doing like super multicolored looks like this. It'S just inevitable they're gon na take some time to get through, but one of my tips, for these repetitive striped looks, is whenever you're going to paint on a color just paint all of your stripes that are in that same color. At the same time and it'll help you go a lot faster, so, for instance, if you're painting on your orange go ahead and paint on all of your orange stripes at the same time, that way, you're not constantly dropping your brush into your bowl and picking up The next brush for each stripe all the way down the hair strand, because that does end up adding quite a bit of time. If you in general you're not looking to do this crazy, a holographic stripe the intense kind of look, you can certainly utilize the same color block placement, but do your own colors on it. There'S absolutely no reason why you couldn't make these sections much more simplified with something like a pink and purple ombre or just solid blue or whatever you want to do with it. The only limitation is your imagination, you guys for hidden haircolor. It really is more about where you're positioning the color blocking itself than it is about the color that is being applied on that color blocking. If that makes sense, and by the way you guys, I know that some of you guys have been using these techniques and trying them out, and I love seeing your guys's work. It makes me so happy whenever I see somebody using a technique that I showed online and I love to share your guys's work on my Instagram page in my insta stories. So if you decide to try out one of my techniques make sure you use hashtag rainbow head and then tag me Caitlin Ford, hair in your photo, so that I can see it and then I can share it with my audience and let me know which video You watched and which technique you were inspired by. I would love to see the work that you guys are doing and how you're taking these techniques and making them your own. Because that's the cool thing about art in general and I do view hair as an art. But the cool thing about art is that it evolves with each person who touches it and adds their own unique spin to it. So I'd love to see what you guys are doing with these techniques and with that, let's head on to the rest of our beautiful haircolor montage. So now it was time to peel and reveal our beautiful hair color and we're gon na head into blow-drying, which is also another one of my favorite parts of this. Seeing all the fruits of your labor come together in the blow-dry. It is just immensely satisfying. I just love the way that this placement moves. I just love it the flow of the diagonal lines in this and just how the color is kind of like blend together in a really interesting way. As I mentioned before, this is not true holographic, but I do honestly believe that this is probably as close as you can get to holographic, with hair without being actually holographic. Because of the way the rainbow looks when you move it and shift it and all of that fun stuff and now, let's take a look at a couple of different styling ideas as far as revealing the color so with hidden haircolor. It'S all about keeping your color tucked away until you're, ready to show it off. Of course, one of the easiest ways that you can do this is to find some really cool accessories. These rhinestone 90s snap clips are seriously like just everywhere. Lately, you see them all over Instagram lately and they're, so cute, I'm absolutely obsessed with them. So definitely a super easy way to kind of pull the top of the hair to the side. So you can see the side panel, of course, another way that you can reveal the color is simply by braiding the hair back. If you don't feel like spending money on hair clips and then as well in the back, you can braid the hair to pull that aside or even do like a half up, half down kind of look with it, which I didn't demonstrate here, but pretty easy to See how you could do that if you're going to work or if you're, going to a more conservative event or something like that, and you don't want to show your hair color. A great way to secure your hair is just simply with a low ponytail or a nice low chignon, which is always a great way to add a little bit of chicest to your hair. If you're going to like an evening event or something like that - and you don't want to show off this crazy color, but there you have it you guys. These are two really great ideas for hiding hair color in your hair. So you can have work on top and party underneath and you know just have that freak flag flying in your own hair. I would love to know what your guys's thoughts are about this technique and which hidden technique. Do you prefer? Do you like the side panel? Better or do you like the back panel better or do you like both of them leave me a comment down below? Let me know which one was your favorite today. So here is the decapitated head of my victim today. So this is definitely something that you could possibly wear if you want to have fun, hair color, but maybe your workplace doesn't allow it, or maybe you just are a little bit more conservative in general, and so you kind of want the option to be able to Put it away when you're not really feeling it I feel like this is just a super super-fun option. I mean just look at that. I am just really pleased with how this came out. I'M so excited about this. You guys it is so cute if you guys are wondering about the accessories I used on my Mankins hair today I will have links to my Amazon purchases down in the description box below I don't have an affiliate account set up with Amazon yet so those are Just links to the products that I used and, if you're looking for more inspiration, definitely there are so many fantastic hair artists on Instagram. I definitely encourage you guys to check it out, I'm sure if you go and check hashtag under lights or under lights, hair on Instagram you'll probably see some really cool inspiration that is similar to this pop-up. But I was super excited to share this with you guys today, and I hope you enjoyed it. Stacey aka pinkysworn: It’s true what you say about “work society” becoming more accepting of funky hair and tattoos. I work in a traditionally conservative industry and in a specific company that’s always been pretty conservative. Even within my work environment, I can hardly believe how much more accepting people have become of what everyone used to deem unprofessional. I’ve watched the dress code get more and more relaxed since I started there 7 years ago, and they’ve done away with almost all of the rules about piercings. And people still respect us and want to do business with us! I think most of it has been driven by people willing to stand up and be like, “I’m an awesome employee, and having colourful hair, facial piercings, or visible tattoos doesn’t change that.”

Pilar Ruiz: I have it in blue. I've been with it for 2 months and my father still hasn't noticed. I should try the rainbow one too. Absolutely love it!

Isidora Espinoza: I'd love to see more of a chevron pattern rather than diagonal lines it'd look so cool when moving, i imagine it would look like a fuzzy tv signal or something

Gina Ahhh: I want this and have always wanted something like this. Your hair color job's are amazing I love them and you.❤

eerie eros: i'd love to see some of those techniques on really curly hair, if possible love your work so much, you're amazing

It's Simply Elle: About 10 years ago when I was on vacation in Philadelphia I asked a hair stylist if she could hide color. I told her what I wanted. Basically the back section of hair red. So when I curled my hair it popped. Worked out wonderful. Hairstylist said she never would have thought to do that. Glad to see you're doing it.

Snegga: Thank you ♥️

Victoria Fox: I’m dying for your fringe rainbow but I love all the options you showed today!!!

zweiundzwanzigg: This is so beautiful!! I would love to do this with my hair but I'm not sure how it would look with curly hair

sonrisacortes: I love this! Thank you so much for your content and creativity! I change my hair every year for my birthday (1/1) so I’ve been trying to think that to do next year...you’ve inspired me to make this the year of the rainbow fringe!

Captain Basketcase: I want to believe that you hit one million subscribers by this time next year. I believe in you that much. Audrey M: Absolutely stunning! Love both, but the side......WOW!

Brooke Spencer: You are so freaking talented. These are so cool

maria: It's crazy how almost "natural" this looks when it's all done! It almost looks like it could've grown out of your head that way

Carol Swafford: I LOVE THIS!!! I'm one of those that my work frowns on crazy color. But if I can tuck it up underneath, so it's not as identifiable, I think I can get away with that!! Woohoo!!

Zarah Makes Me Pretty: Thank you for being one of my biggest inspirations in the industry!

kristi: Love this.. hidden hair color allows for this fun expression. I have done this for the last 5 or more years and it is typically not acceptable in my industry. I took cues from reactions.., if I get someone who says wow your hair is bright! That’s crossing the line... but if I get comments about omg I love your hair... because they are surprised by subtlety.... Your artistry is amazing!

Stevie Conti: i cant wait to do this placement thank you so much

Luke Kushner: I really hope James picks you. Your content and perspective feels so fresh. We need more content creators like you!

Emmaline Garcia: My client just brought this video in. We killed it! Thank you! ️‍

Shelia Keller: Love it i would love to get my hair done like that

The Traveling Ants: You’ve inspired me to book a consultation, I can’t live without this in my hair! Look at those colors!!

Nicole Courtney: The mesh strips disclaimer was pretty cool. Also how you like when people who are not stylists or colorists try to use your techniques. It seems very real and humble of you in this day and age also you have to know that a lot of people who enjoy this type of hair are not going to a salon to keep it up or change it as mich as we like ❤ thank you

Carla G: I love this! I’m a bit disappointed by a stylist here in my city who told me that the hidden hair colour trend is .... out of fashion. Is it?!?!

Tara Camille: I REEEEEEEALLY love this look!!!!! I wants it!

zelda RAINBOW: I wish i could remove my own head to try this out myself, it looks so cool i want to do that to my hair so bad!!!

Suzzanne Phillips: I love watching your videos. You are so amazing!! My hair has prematurely went silver/white....I would love to do this to my hair. But it is also naturally curly and getting up everyday @ 4:30 for work there’s just no time to straighten it. I’m afraid with it being curly the color would peek through and work just doesn’t allow fun! Would the color show through the waves? ❤️

Emily: I love this!!! I’m so glad I found your channel!

Jane Smith: Love them both! Would absolutely do both at same time! But heres my question...why cant someone do glitter or sparkly dye color that's permanent?!?! Now I want that!!!

MommyOfZ&L: So out of curiosity, I'd love to know how long this took and also how much you might charge for something like this on a real person. It would be neat if you gave the time it takes for the hair in each video you do, even if you aren't willing to price it. I understand it's hard to put a definite price because different hair types/lengths/healths would possibly need different amounts of time for bleaching, and coloring, as well as not wanting to put a price out there and then have someone come back one day and be like, "but on your video you said $" and you have to try to explain how that video is old and the economy is different or that you are a super famous world renowned colorist and you charge more now

Captain Basketcase: I love both of them. Like having it in both places looks so fun. I wanna try to do it myself but I'm too sick these days to be able to do it. I'm hoping once my half arsed rainbow ish job i did on my head fades away... I'll save up to go to a real stylist to do one of those hidden blocks done... to save on money haha.. and i wanna make the rest of my hair a pink/ red/black ombre... I normally lighten my tips and put pink in it cuz i love pink and I'm a rebel and i would threaten my work with the union if they had an issue with my hair colour or tattoos

TXM: Omg this is amazing. I want to let my hair grow long again and make a pilgrimage to have you color my hair. What part of the world are you in, anyway? ❤

Christine Nicole: I think you nailed it! I would call it more of an oil slick color technique. Dope!!! Can"t wait to try it! The new updated mullet. party in the back....or front. <3 ;)

Linden Davison-hardy: New subscriber, loving the looks

Angie Hale: They are both AWESOME!! I would love to have mine like that. My hair is black right now and it is to my waistline...well, a bit longer than that. I don't really HAVE to keep my haircolor hidden, but I just love how this looks. I wish I could find someone who could do this for me... Too bad I don't live close to you...your talent is A. MA. ZING!!

Jesus Lives: I would love to see how you would approach this process on human hair wigs, because you're dealing with the issue of having gaps in between the wefts... I'm just now getting into making wigs, and naturally, the next step would be playing with colors. Also, thank you so much for offering your skills/tutorials to encourage others to learn. It's a competitive market - to help others, when you could keep your tricks to yourself, shows a big heart. And OMG your bangs in this video have me hypnotized!

Guadalupe EG: Absolutely gorgeous! Wow!!!

Robert Dwyer: Side note: This looks bloody amazing :o :o

lucyriverstone: Who else really wants to see that same diagonal application pattern but in a chevon form? I feel like it’d be really hard to line it up evenly on both sides of the the head, but it seems like it’d be so cute and stunning

Lupsylium: So amazing ! Trully beutiful and perfectly executed ! I love it ! I love you !

minghaonator: Thank you this was so helpful!

cassandra sotos: I've had underlit purple since 2007...thankfully when i got hired at my doctor office job in 2012 they didn't care as long as i can conceal it. My top layers are pretty light and every now and then when i re-dye my dry crispy blonde ends get a lil color bleed...but after a few washes it fades to a nice ash which is what i prefer

Nathan Campbell: Hi I love your videos To pixel hair try drawing your desired pattern on clear film so u know where your placing colour. Try with a mario bros pic it’s easy. Build up the pic section at a time leaving small pieces of the pic each time then going back to full picture again. It takes some trying but u will understand every time. Thank you ❤️❤️

Amber Rhoades: I'd LOVE to have this done to my hair but my hairdresser is not confident she can do something like this so I'll just stick with my green ombre hair.

Alisha Nicole: You’re so awesome and I’m learning a lot from your content I’m making a wig and I’m gonna use this technique to keep it black but have that splash of colorrrr. Jesus loves you and thinks you’re a total rock start! So do I!

Sarah Ashraf: I need some advice... Almost 10 years ago when I was 18 I went to cosmetology school and I loved everything except cutting hair. When I was cutting I would loose my line / end up cutting less and less. ( like if I started by taking off 2 inches I would end up cutting 1/2 inch somehow) I ended up dropping out. All these years later I am still obsessed with watching hair videos, like yours and I love dying my own hair in new creative ways. Recently, I've been thinking about re-enrolling but I'm worried about the losing my line part. In your opinion / experience do you think that if I was awful at hair cutting back then, that I will be awful now; that if you loose your line you just don't have what it takes and never will? I don't know, I'm confused. Sorry that was so long and hopefully it was not confusing.. I really appreciate any advice you or anyone else can give.. I just don't want to go 13000 in debt again if I can't be taught lol.

I DON'T CARE THAT YOU BROKE YOUR ELBOW: I'm doing both with arctic fox poison underneath my blonde hair soon. I'm mad excited. I'm not trying to hide it, I'm just not brave enough to dye it fully in case it doesn't fade nicely.

Jaya Singh: Would love to see a peek-a-boo turquoise colour in curly hair. You can have me as your personal guinea pig anytime. (I am a doc *wink wink* ) P.S.: I loved both of them, it's so hard to choose any single one of 'em.

Tia: It reminds me of a kinda oil spill look, I absolutely love it, id love for you to do my hair
