How To Do Balayage Highlights At Home On Short Hair | Step-By-Step Tutorial

Here's our tutorial for applying balayage highlights to short, straight hair at home, using our Madison Reed Light Works kit.

Only Light Works™ offers the same 2-step process that you get in a salon, first lightening, then toning to refine the color for natural-looking, balayage highlights.

STEP 1: Create Highlights

▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬

Use Light Works™ Lightening Cream with our angled brush kit for fool-proof application of natural-looking highlights on short hair.

STEP 2: Tone Highlights

▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬

Use Light Works™ Finish Toning Glaze, a demi-permanent multi-tasker that perfects the tone of highlights (just as a salon would), while improving overall condition and shine of hair.

Plus, we included a Bond Building Cleansing Treatment to strengthen highlighted hair, helping to prevent future breakage. That’s how much we love hair. And you. ❤︎

▸ Light Works™ Balayage Highlighting Kit: bit.ly/2MhIMM0

Hi, I'm going to show you how to get beautiful volley out highlights at home using Madison Reid's light works volumes, highlighting kit. Isn'T this cool? This is the kit that's designed specifically for short hair, and today, I'm going to show you the technique for balayage a short straight hair like mine. This kit contains everything you need for a two step process just like in the salon for bleaching and toning, and it has this great little angled brush, which is how we're going to apply the bleach to the hair. This ammonia-free clay based lightening cream allows for goof proof applications. This is a toning blaze, it perfects the tone of your highlights and the overall condition and shine of your hair. It also comes with this bond building cleansing treatment which strengthens your hair. It'S a balayage in a box. You want to start with dry unwashed hair from the night before shampoo is fine, a button-down shirt or around the neck. A smock and a towel so always conduct a sensitivity test 48 hours before using the product. The steps are included in the kit. Madison Reid also recommends its strand test, just to determine your processing time for your desired level of lightness and the instructions for that are also in a kit. The entire process is going to take about 90 minutes. So let's get started first you're going to comb your hair forward and then you're going to take your first section, it's a straight section along the hairline and then you're gon na clip the rest of the hair out of the way. Okay, I'm ready with my gloves and I'm going to mix the lightening cream with the activator and a nonmetallic Bowl. So I'm mixing it up to a nice creamy consistency and get all the lumps out. You want to wipe off your brush. So it's nice and clean and you're ready to highlight once you've completed your sectioning and you've mixed your lightening cream. You have 20 minutes to complete your application, so set a timer simply dip the tip of the bristles into the product so that just the tip has the lightening cream. This ensures a clean application. So, let's begin I'm going to start by moving right to left, taking pieces of hair and painting the color on vertically concentrating on the ends of my hair and away from the roots. The cool thing about this clay-based formula is that it doesn't transfer to other pieces of your hair. Remember you can apply as many highlights as you wish. I just chose to do these three we'll see what happens in the next section, so I'm gon na remove the clip and I'm going to take another parting, just above the first taking care not to comb the hair over the pre, lighten sections be gentle. We clip it, you want to make sure that your gloves stay clean during the process as well, and if you have highlights existing highlights, you want to avoid those pre lightened pieces of hair. Dipping the brush, just the tip, add Lightner between each piece again avoiding the roots, concentrating on the mid-length and ends of the hair. Perfect use the cleansing wipe if you get lightening mixture on your skin. I'M gon na do one more section, because I want a few more highlights. Okay, remove gloves and set your timer for an additional 40 minutes or, according to the results of your strand test, you can wipe off your hair just to see how it's lightening during the process as well once your processing is complete. Put on your second pair of gloves and then wash your hair with your bond building cleansing treatment, you want to leave it on for three minutes and then rinse: okay, so just towel dry, your hair and then comb it out. I love that this kit includes a toner just like the salon when you get highlights I'll, be using the toning, glaze and lossy oculto fees. Ok, so put on your third pair of gloves and then squeeze the toning glaze into the toning glaze activator, oh, and then shake for 30 seconds until well mixed okay! So I'm going to saturate my hair with this, and you can use a comb if you want to, but I'm just going to massage it in with my fingers, go ahead and put it all over your hair, no need to just keep it where the highlights are. Okay, so now I'm just gon na put on the cap to keep it from dripping everywhere and let it process for 20 minutes once your timer goes off shampoo and condition with the amazing color protecting shampoo and conditioner that comes in your kit, okay, so here's my Results - and I love my balayage - it was easy to do. It has incredible depth, it's really shiny. I just think it's beautiful. So if you have any questions you can reach out to Madison Reid's color crew or visit them on Madison recom. Thank you.
