The Failure That Was The Natural Hair Movement | Most Of Miree

Let’s talk natural hair, the movement & a little bit about the rebirth of it. Today we break down some small points of the movement that brought it to what it is today, a mess. Granted I still love the content BUT there is still a lot of fixing that needs to be done. I hope you all enjoy.

There was this whole era of like super defined wash and goes, and everybody trying to do a wash and go because they wanted their hair to be considered presentable. I'Ve even gotten a comment from my own father, making fun of my natural hair, but if you're doing it so much, your edges are going to be gone. Ah, really now: hey babies! It'S marie welcome or welcome back to my channel today, as you can tell by the title of the video we are going to be talking about natural hair, which is nothing new to my page. However, it's a whole situation that happened not just recently but last month that i wanted to talk about. You already know about the situation which i'm going to talk about. If you look at time, go ahead and put your comments about it without further ado, let's go ahead and get started. Let me put my hair back. If you want to know what products i'm using the all the products will be linked down below in the description box, majority of my products are from sephora and i am an affiliate. So i do get a commission like a small commission if you use those links to buy some of these products and if you do buy some of the products. Thank you so much first things. First, what triggered this whole entire video? So what had happened was there? Is this creator named lip gloss? Also, if you hear yelling in the back, just like in the last video, it's my brother, i'm sorry and lipgloss has been growing she's, mostly known for her commentary, type videos on tick, tock and on youtube. She decided to come online and to talk about um, trying to embrace her natural hair. Now lip gloss has 4c here now. You all know, especially if you're a black woman and you are natural, having 4c hair is seen as like a negative thing. It'S a negative connotation for your hair and she was like you know what i want to go through the process. I'M gon na put the video up in here after this she's like i want to go through the process of like embracing my natural hair. If the hair wants to shrink, it wants to shrink if the hair, the hair, just want to do what the hair just want to do. So she made that like a series on her page and in one of the videos, let me go ahead and put the video here, like the first video actually put the video in here right now. I learned how to wear my natural hair untouched. This is how it looked when i woke up. Y'All was talking about all type of moisturizing gel. This is that i have product in my hair. Dupe hair is very moisturized. This is just how the hair look. That'S what i don't want to run from anymore. This is what the hair want to do, so i have to let it do what i want to do. I want to learn to wear it completely shrunk. I don't want to stretch it. Hair is not meant to be long, will never be long, and it's time society came to terms with that. How you gon na tell me how i was born is ugly like stop playing with me. Anyway, it's a struggle, i'm i'm struggling. You gon na see like i'm struggling to accept how it looks so bad like that from the side. Anyway, i put this outfit on. Let me tell you right now: i can only pull white boys with this hair, but i'm not mad to be honest anyways. This is the back. The back was eating lotion on the stomach, just to help me out a little bit more yeah it's hardest to do this, but i'm just gon na try. You know what i mean, i'm just gon na try you heard from the video she was just like. I only pull white boys with this hair, but like it's whatever now, here's, where the mess really like kicks in that video blew up and got millions of views and a ton of likes and it started getting on twitter and a lot of black men on twitter Saw her video got very upset, it was just like what do you mean, like you, only pulled white men with your hair texture, you're, just lying you're, making up a narrative about black men. Mind you mind you lip gloss, did not say anything about black men in her video. She said white men, however, black men on twitter were the main ones who got mad at her video so mad that there was a black man who went took her photo. They took, they took a screenshot of her her face and they took her butt. I think they made a hinge account. Might i add you have to pay to make an account. I think they paid like thirty dollars. So then you have to pay thirty dollars. I think just about to make an account and to set up and everything like that, i'm not on hinge. I don't use hinge or anything like that, but regardless they paid money for it went and did all of that got results back from the hinge account and was like yeah. You see she's lying and making up this narrative about black men and black men. Don'T like knowledge natural here, mind you, she didn't even say anything about black men, because you attracted all these black men on this hinge account. You must be lying. This is so weird like that's some weird crap. She didn't even mention you or bring you up yet you got mad. That was really a reflection of those black men on twitter because it's just like, if you know you're a black man and you're actually attracted to a woman with natural hair. Mind you, like, i said again, she did not even mention them, so the black men who did not get triggered or mad by that comment, you didn't see them acting before. However, the ones who got triggered and mad about that comment are the ones who just know deep down within their heart, within their spirit and within their soul. They do not like women with natural hair, especially foresee natural hair and in the type 4 category. Some of them have that, oh, my god same hair type and don't even like their own hair. For somebody who didn't mention you or even bring you up to begin with, you sure are hooping and hollering. It'S somebody with type 4 hair. I don't have 4c hair, but i have 4a4b hair. You can go and look at my page or look at this page. You'Ve seen me in my natural hair - and i know somebody's probably gon na - be like oh, my gosh she's, even talking about natural, hair and stuff like this, but she got braids up in her head for majority, pretty much all of my videos. Most of my videos. Even my older videos that i have put away, i have my hair, my natural hair out in his natural state, and i have gotten comments from black men on my own youtube page talking about my hair. I'Ve gotten comments from family members. Talking about my natural hair, i have i've even gotten a comment from my own father making fun of my natural hair. I also don't like the fact that they gaslit her and they made fun of her because she told her experience and every single handedly her experience. If she says that's what she goes through, that's actually what she goes through. I don't think she would just come online and make something like that up and for you to call her a liar and a bunch of people to gaslight her for it. I was like baby y'all are a mess, something else i would like to talk about, and i'm gon na especially talk about this in a future. Video lipgloss is a very confident girl and the reason why a lot of people are triggered and mad at the fact that lip gloss has the confidence that she has is because she is a darker skinned. Black woman with very tight textured hair and people are expecting of black women who look like lip gloss. They expect them to like think low of themselves because other people think low of them because of colorism. That'S a whole other discussion in itself, but i feel like that's another reason why a lot of people are just mad and don't like lip gloss either because she's, a darker skinned black woman, who has confidence in herself that whole entire situation really just triggered my thought Process my thought process but like triggered my perspective and overall opinion towards the natural hair community, a bit more and how it's changed over the years compared to when i was in, like middle school or high school or beginning of high school up to now um i Went natural in like 2016 and it's 2022 now, and the natural hair community is basically dead at this point. Well, not dead, it's not as popular as it used to be. I really want to sit here and talk about some of the things that really push the natural hair movement over the edge to cause it to finally like die. In my opinion, these are problems within the natural hair community and i want to talk about the rebirth of the natural hair community. Let'S talk about the death, i want to talk about the texture police, the texture police are beyond annoying and they're still around to this day to this very day. Now, if you don't know what the texture police is they're, basically a group of people within the natural hair community who like to go around policing people about what their hair texture is and isn't say. For example, it could be a girl with 4a hair. They could go and they could wet their hair or like put gel on their hair to make it super defined. Their hair would be weighing down mind you when their hair dries it like curls up and goes into that 4a form. People will see it like when it's wet and when it's like still going through the drying process and that person will say. Oh my gosh, i have 4a they'll, be like no, you don't girl, you got 3b 3c. What are you doing trying to stay here and claim the hair texture and you want the hair texture you're most definitely: 3. 3B. 3C people. Do it all the time with people with type 4 hair, especially 4c hair? Now don't get me wrong. I get why there are some people who are just like: okay um, not the texture police, but people who are within the natural hair movement or natural hair community and being like okay, they're, really heavy on people making sure they type in the correct category. Because there tend to be some people with certain hair types who claim to have insert hair type here, just to do it for views. People especially do it with 4c hair, and i can see how that can be very irritating and frustrating, because you could be somebody with type 4 hair or foresee hair. Looking for somebody with your hair texture and you type in your hair texture, these girls with actually like loose loose hair that are not in the type or range, and it's just like what are you doing? You don't belong in this category. You are not in this category, you don't have super tight, curly hair. That leads me to my next point, which is the chart. The natural hair typing chart is ridiculous. I forgot the man who made it, but a lot of people were saying that this chart really does come from a texture standpoint which i'm just like. Okay, i i can see that. However, at the same time, i still see and understand why the chart is still popular and still all over the place, because that's how people are able to find other people with that hair type i even still have to like mention like okay, i'm 4a 4b. Just so i can have people with 4a4b or people with natural hair that is like similar to minor texture, that's similar to mine, so they can find me easily. That'S understandable, but i also get the other end of which it's just like the chart needs to be thrown away because not gon na sit here online. It'S billions of people on this earth you're sitting here telling me out of all the billions of people they're only like nine to 12 different textures on the chart and there's billions of people on this earth, and you think those things that people only fit in those Nine to 12 textures somebody lying it's just like there are other textures out there. Hence why i feel like there are a lot of arguments and why the texture police even come the way that they do because of their game. Chart women with type 3 hair were pushed to the forefront compared to the women with 4a 4b and 4c nerf for hair 3 hair 383 b3c and even in the twos, was seen as the standard, especially in like 2015 14 15 16.. A lot of companies were only picking girls with that type of hair. Companies really did not go to people with type 4 hair and if they did go to people with type 4 hair, they only chose people with like 4a here, because 4a is closer to 3c, and i remember being back in middle school and finally making decisions. Like. Oh, my gosh, i want to start the transition or start to like start the process of transitioning. I remember being younger and being like. Okay, this. This is how my hair is going to come out like this is how my hair is going to look. I have type 4 hair, so it was a shocker to me because it's just like oh my gosh, i was expecting my hair to come out like this. It looked like this and i've been watching all this content and learning all of this material from these girls. With this looser textured hair, but i don't have hair like them. So what do i do? Wasn'T that many girls online with my hair texture got into high school. Finally, did the big chop and i found youtubers, who had my hair texture like nappy food, even though she's 4c, i was still able to give some tips and get some information for her, because we're still in the type 4 range um natural 85. I think that's her name, half freaking beauty or ecma mandecko creators like that they really helped me and had an impact on me when it came to me learning about my hair. Natural rain is also a really good one me and her basically have a very similar texture. All that to say that representation is very important back then we did not have that representation and i feel like that, was really leading toward the downfall, even in the beginning, towards the downfall of the natural hair movement, as it was growing and like time was progressing. Another downfall is the fact that people were consistently trying to make their hair super duper defined. Now, don't get me wrong, there's nothing wrong with wearing your hair super defined. If you do wash and goes no matter what your hair texture is and that's the standard for you keep doing that it's nothing wrong with that whatsoever. Nothing! Nothing! Nothing! That'S not what i'm trying to say here, because even every now and then i'll do like a nice little wash and go something like that, because you just want to see your curls. However, it got to a point of where it was like. If your hair was not defined with gel or some type of mousse, it was considered undone and unpresentable, and if your curls did not look a certain way into a certain standard, it was just like you got to look that weird same thing with the edges: um, Don'T get me wrong, i love a good edge layer. Something else to consider is the fact that if you consistently lay your edges as much as a lot of these, women still do to this very day, nothing wrong with it. But if you're doing it so much, your edges are going to be gone. They'Re going to be gone, you will no longer have edges. There was this whole era of like super defined wash and goes, and everybody trying to do a wash and go because they wanted their hair to be considered, presentable and an era of which it was just like. Okay, i got ta make sure my edges are consistently laid. Otherwise, my hair is not considered presentable and nobody actually sat down and was like for real and talked about it, because i'm not gon na sit here and lie constantly laying your edges. It gets tiring and then, on top of the edge discussion, if you did not have full edges or like your edges, was not as thick as other parts of your hair. People would be like where your edges that i have edges my hair just is not super thick and the hairline is super full on the hairline and that's okay, your hair isn't supposed to be exceedingly dense and thick in the hairline. I keep putting on blush because i love this blush so freaking much can we talk about the type 4 self deprecation that consistently happened? I don't know about you, but i saw it everywhere and i still see it to this day when i am out in public, and i have i'll put up a picture of the selfie of like i had my hair like this up in the past. I wish i go out with my mom. My mom has a looser textured hair. My mom has like 3b 3c hair, my hair, that's to me that's considered done. My hair was moisturized. It'S fine. It just shrinks up. She shrinks that's normal for type 4, hair to shrink, or just naturally in general, to shrink. However, hers will still be hanging because she has a looser texture. I will see other black women and they'll be like they will compliment my mom. They don't compliment my hair. I don't expect anybody to just compliment my hair, but with the things that they would say when they compliment my mom's hair, they would be like. Oh, my hair could never do that. It was just like. Oh, my hair is nappy and i just be sitting there. Listening like, oh, you have my hair texture. You want the hair texture that looks like my mom. It'S nothing but self-deprecation sit there and they talk about the hair and they're. Just like oh it's just it's not going to do right. I don't want to lay it curls up, it's just like they say knee naps, i'm like! Ah, oh really. Now it takes me back. Sometimes. I also look at the age of those women, late 30s, 40s even 50s, and some of them in their 60s, and so a lot of them grew up self hating parents and family members, um and people who just did not take natural hair or like see natural Hair is a good thing like i still have some older family members of mine who have hair. That is like mine, but they're too scared to wear their hair out, because they've worn it out like that in the past and like immediately after that, like they thrown away, throwing a hat relaxed it, because it was just like it's just happy. And even then, these girls in my generation, who still do that i'll go on post and i look at comments with the girl with natural hair or especially like a loose texture, and i still see girls with type 4 hair, saying. Oh my gosh, my type 4 hair could never oh my gosh. My hair could never, and i'm just like girl when you say stuff like that, it makes some people with loosely textured hair, not saying that all people with looser texture here are like this, but i definitely have seen this before they end up having some some of Them end up having some type of complex and i do not want to end up starting those type of argument or anything like that. But that is the truth, because it's some people with looser textured hair who thinks that they're better than people with type 4 hair um, because their hair is looser or closer to straight hair, if you're a person with type 4, hair and you're. Talking like that, especially in the comments and people see those comments, they're going to start being comfortable and okay with talking about our hair, like with the way that you talk about and self-deprecate yourself with your type 4 hair like just stop doing that, can we also Talk about the no butters, no oils conversation, one isn't that old. This is very much like this was in like 2019 2020 just about who came online like they went to school for hair like so, they know what they're talking about. They came online and we're explaining to everybody yo. I think y'all need to like stop using oils and butters on your hair. It'S not doing what y'all think it's doing, and it's really not helping you. You should stop because it's making your hair not absorb moisture um, and that was a whole argument in itself when i remember watching that video or those videos and looking at the comments and seeing everybody and their mama getting mad at the woman who went to school. Talking about this and giving them this information which could potentially help them with their hair growth and don't get me wrong, i get i got that perspective, but i also feel like that leads to doing what you feel like is best for your hair, because don't get Me wrong, even though that person, or even though that woman said that about natural hair and being like, oh my gosh, you don't need to like use that on your hair. I still use oils and butters on my hair, i still oil, my scalp, i use shea butter on my hair because i know how my hair is. I did not like the reaction of those black women at all. It was very hateful in the comments, and i'm just thinking girl. It'S really not that deep best thing you can do is be like. Oh okay, this is some interesting information. I'Ll look into it more to see whether or not i want to take this into consideration and then move on in the last one i feel like is something to consider. This is something a lot of natural still do even me. I still do it it's about. Twist outs and how a lot of type 4 naturals did twist out so that was just like. Oh, the natural hair movement was basically us faking our hair texture, because we did nothing but twist outs and when we did twist outs, a lot of people didn't do twist outs that were like small. They did twist out so like medium size or big. A lot of the reasons are a lot of the times we do. Besides, or at least the reason why i personally do twist outs is so my hair can stay stretched, because if my hair is consistently in a shrunken state, it will go into single strand knots and it will not of my hair will break. I don't want my hair to break. I want my hair to be long and down my back, so it's certain methods and certain things that i have to do in order to make sure my hair is growing healthily and won't have any problems through the process and twist out is one of the things That help, however, i feel like that is an interesting thing to consider or like an interesting way to look at it as us, basically faking our hair texture. I thought it was kind of funny, but i definitely see and understand her perspective on that now. Let'S talk about the rebirth and i don't know if i could call it a rebirth. Lip gloss has had a really big impact when she made that video talking about natural hair it just like blew up and a lot of more black women are going and accepting their hair in its natural state. Hence why i was just like okay, i feel like it would be nice to talk about a rebirth or like a starting over of the natural hair movement, which i don't even mind at all. I love that for us, but especially for women with 4c hair, because that's what their movement was originally about, women with 4c hair and i'm happy that she triggered like a rebirth or like a starting over. That'S very much so necessary, especially now so especially be good for the girls who are younger than us and them learning to love their natural hair, because i'm not gon na sit here and lie. It is a process and within the past few years, and so if you look and pay attention, it's been a growth in the return of perms, not perms relaxers. There are a lot of black women who consistently wear wigs and weaves, and i've already said this before. There'S nothing wrong with wearing waves and weeds, but a lot of them like to throw the excuse of. Oh i'm doing this for a protective. Meanwhile, they have nothing underneath their hair to protect. They aren't properly taking care of their hair. Some of them don't want to take the time to invest and learn their hair. I really would like to see or like this to continue as a rebirth, and i would also really like which i don't think this is happening anytime soon, because if they were to do it but like they would get hate for it, you don't really see that Many black artists, a black female artist wearing their hair in his natural state, and the only person i can think of is our linux and her hair is she's in the type 4 range her hair is beautiful. I love it so much. I love seeing her wear her hair in his natural state. Some of them have their own reasons, but i feel like also some of them just don't like their natural hair. That'S something i also think about. If we're going to go through the process of a rebirth or a restart of the natural hair movement, we need to do it right. That is the end of this video. I hope you guys enjoyed this video if you did give it a thumbs up, subscribe down below, go to the bell notification and i'll see you guys in my next one, my

Most Of Miree: new video on 2nd channel: https://youtu.be/XQBbGFX6_58

Eddiy: I honestly don't think that the natural hair community failed. The huge amount of natural hair content and black women proudly showcasing their natural hair across various social media platforms is proof that it didn't fail. I think it simply highlighted the fact that many other things such as texturism, colorism and featurism have to be addressed for a lot of black women to fully embrace their hair.

Mahogany Victorian : Natural hair isn’t a trend it’s a lifestyle. I don’t think the “movement” failed but the reality is taking care of your hair is a lot of maintenance. Black women are a movement by ourselves. Sometimes I think some black women dwell too deep into things when reality were not a one size fits all kind of community. Learning about your natural hair and how to take care of it should be a priority within itself. If you want to go natural do it. If you want be versatile and wear weaves and wigs do it. Just keep embracing your black beauty !!!

benitaspeaks: That's true, natural hair was trending a few years ago. I am grateful for that period because I learnt alot about how to look after my afro. However alot of it was unsustainable to the point where I ended up texlaxing my hair. Oh and black men felt some type of way because they know they are guilty without us even openly blaming them.

Kaycee Martin: I love my grandma but if my 4b/4c curls and coils aren’t defined and my hair has frizz and shrinkage she always makes a comment that it isn’t done. I think it starts with the older generation and how they didn’t love their natural hair nor teach us to love ours in it’s most natural state.

Cotton haired Aesthetic: I want dry afros and puffs. Let's get creative and do things that others can't with their hair ❤

Kenny B: I feel you on family members making fun of your hair I had gotten to a place where I liked my natural hair and my grandmother told me it was N-word-ish (with the hard R) and ugly and that I needed to braid it out to make it looser which I had already been doing to just because my hair is 2 different textures and it makes the length look uneven unless it’s braided out

Remember the Time?: I remember the natural hair movement, I left it because it it was getting harder to find people with my texture. At one point, I saw a lot of people with my texture, then I started seeing people with type 2 and type 3 hair as the top creators. I tried to make my hair look like theirs, it really confused me. I was wondering why my hair didn't look like theirs, and thought something was wrong with me, then I realized that my mother and sister have similar hair types, so it couldn't be me. I never ended up hating my hair, I was just very confused. I thought my hair was supposed to be wavy or loosely curled, even though it's kinky. I'm still kinda confused on how the movement was overtaken from people with kinky-curly hair. I also wondered why people with wavy hair became a part of the movement (no hate to those with wavy hair, just wondering) I thought the natural hair movement was for those with curly-kinky hair, then I realize that people consider wavy hair curly. Does anyone know why wavy hair is considered curly, even though it's under the category wavy?

CelestineWarbeck: I don’t understand how something that grows from humans heads naturally is a “movement “ or “lifestyle “. We over complicate things

Jada Ingram: It is beyond me how us black women are still being ridiculed for things we can not control, such as our hair texture. AND most of the ignorant comments comes from our own community. We need to do better

Khryssi05: The natural hair movement was for 4B/4C originally. These girls with type 3 and 4A hair took it over sadly

Kayla Umaler: I’ve been natural since the 5th grade, I’m a junior in college now, and have been bullied for my natural 4c hair since I started the journey. From the kids at school, to my dad at home. My last straw was in the 12th grade when my dad attacked my appearance and called my hair nappy. Ever since, I’ve been consistently wearing wigs and weaves, and I refuse to wear my hair out again tbh. We can talk about ignoring the bullies all we want, but my hair trauma is so deep and affects my mental health and self esteem too much. What makes it worse is how much 4c slander is also perpetuated on the internet. My niece is mixed and my dad praises her lighter skin and loose hair , but hates/insults the skin and hair that me and my sisters have. It’s really sad, I’m just saying this to say that I completely understand those that don’t wear their natural hair out anymore, it’s hard especially when you have trauma attached to it. I hope one day I’ll have enough courage like all of the beautiful 4c hair queens I see ♥️

Colouredgal: I went natural in 2016 and I had to go through the same process of accepting my type 4ab hair because youtube and social media brainwashed a lot of us into thinking our hair should look like the type 3 girls. I do keratin treatments every 6 months and wear my hair blown out or straight most of the time and my hair doesn’t fall out.

Pretty princess💜: I really wished more black women celebrities especially the rappers who, like to wear their long silky straight hair, would start wearing their natural hair more often, because they are known for being trend setters and in general have bigger impacts on their target audience which are mainly black.

Curlychronicles in the South: The faking our hair texture thing is pretty wild to me. I guess that means everyone is faking their hair texture when they style it in a way that isn’t fresh out the shower? Or is it just black women? Asking for myself! This is all fascinating to me because I’m an OG natural and I think I had a totally different experience than the younger naturals and I hate that y’all seemed to have gotten to the party right when it was getting co-opted and whatnot. I still have folks tell me I’ve helped them better understand and love their hair and that always warms my heart because it can take quite some time to get to this point and some never do. I do think the community is what you make it and it’s important to know that within the natural hair community, there were micro-communities that were even more crucial than the global community ever could be. I still remember my meetup and how poppin it was. I had so much fun learning from others.

SweetCherryBlast: I'm all here for a rebirth of the movement. Lipglosss is younger than me but is already showing so much wisdom and self-love. I agree with your summary of the problems of early Natural Hair community. Back then it was rare to see shrunken, let me take my bonnet off/fluff it, and go videos. That is what stood out to me with the Lipglosss video and the many other young girls I see who have been inspired by her.

Alivia Blount: 15:57 the self deprecating behavior has been normalized and so many people think it’s ok to be awful to tighter coiled 4A-B girl dies because they are anti-black. I see this so often in California where there are a lot of biracial “black ” women who have loser texture curls. Typically these women have all the “wrong” features in terms of Eurocentric beauty standards but they have looser textured hair so they look down on women with tighter coiled hair as the one “thing” or advantage they have in the beauty game. It’s weird and it’s awful. It causing a lot of hate among women of color

Lisa N.: It's sad how natural hair has added another layer of hatred with texturism and colorism. I've never understood the self-hatred.

Mara Jones: Whew the family part hit home cuz the reason I had to big chop in the first place was cuz my mother had it heat straightened and silk presses all my life. When I expressed how I wanted to go natural my mother mocked me and told me I should get it texlaxed. God my family always made comments about my hair since and now that I’m free from them and big chopped and finally got to meet my natural hair I’m absolutely in LOVE with it. When the water hits my scalp, the way my hair is so healthy and thick, I’m obsessed. Btw your natural hair is literally gorgeous! Long straight hair was always my mothers dream, I love short hair and I LOVE my shrinkage. Like yesss my hair is strong and that’s what matters to me ❤️

Momo Mathebula: I was PRAYING that you’d join this conversation !

Lisa Osborne: I remember May 2018, I went to the salon to do my big chop and she was really nice, she said something along the lines of "I hope you know that your hair won't be curly and flat like some of thw girls you see" to which I didn't respond, she followed with "you're going to have the same texture you see on the bottom all the way to the top, and it's alot more work, you have to really take care of it" and I simply let her know that I'm aware of the texture of my hair (her daughter had a looser texture and so does she). The way she said it though was like her telling me not to be disappointed with what grows naturally from my scalp. She told mw about hair masks and how any texture of hair can grow and how she just knew I'd have big hair and she was right ❤

Shree Hill: I don’t think it failed. I work in corporate America and I am so proud of the interns who are wearing their natural hair. I remember when I was 22 and all the coaching told us basically to wear straight hair etc. I also see the younger generation wearing their natural hair a lot more than when I was a kid. I think those of us my age (39) didn’t grow up learning to do our natural hair so we gave up. All in all I think the “movement” gave everyone more options and so it was a success

Domo: My dad said my natural hair was not presentable and made me look like a little kid. Luckily my mom came to my defense. It still hurt to hear that from my own father nonetheless...

imreadii: I love my hair texture when it’s wet & hanging. I’ve come to accept my hair is going to do what it want so I don’t even try anymore. It’s working out so far lol

ChocoLex: a lot of natural hair brands FAILED completely when choosing which content creators they wanted to work with. I felt like they went to the same girls with the same hair types. Lack of representation was and still is real!

bratz: I have 4C hair and when I tell you I have never felt represented by the natural hair movement at all. It definitely had its benefits, but as far as genuine representation it was a no for me. I didn’t feel represented until recently with REAL 4C hair girlies wearing their natural hair without all the slicking down, blow drying, and excess gel/over manipulation

Merita: My opinion is that the natural hair movement failed people with type 4 hair especially those who are predominantly 4C. The content didn't really cater to us and at some point I thought I had an undiscovered 4D curl pattern

Shelby Jestice: I feel like when people make comments comparing their hair to others and they say "my hair won't do this or that", they need to learn how to do their hair. All you have to do is learn your hair and learn what works for you. Just learn how to do your hair because that's what we all had to do.

saxviars: The movement gave me the courage to go natural when I was in middle school, before that my mom used to straighten my hair all the time. For me though, like others here, it isn't a movement, but a lifestyle. People in my family and community still feel insecure and I understand why, but it makes me kind of sad. One of my coworkers even called off work because their hair wasn't braided yet, right after she took it down. I don't judge her for it, but personally my natural hair would never stop me from getting my money if I can control it...

Sage: Also about the edges- most of the time is those “edges” don’t even apart of their natural hairline but yet be asking where my edges at?!

Jada B: As someone with locs, I understand the no oils and butters argument. I wash my hair, barely grease my scalp and rarely spray it (cos I'm lazy). My hair is still healthy and growing faster than I thought it would. I think type 4 hair and afro hair needs simplicity. Don't overdo it. Although my hair is in locs, it can still be applied to people with loose hair. However, do what works for you. I enjoyed watching the video, especially the last part about lipgloss, she is really stirring it up and I love it.

2damecuteUK: I seen the natural hair movement grow from 2008 - until now. The most basic of videos, topical issues, products, hair growth, tutorials and documentaries. Seen it all There was trends that we obsessed about and lots we all out grow. I learned a lot and realised we all were just learning to love and accept our hair for what it is.

Esther: THANK YOU for making this video I have been trying to say this for yearssss! ❤️ It’s crazy that literally everything you said in the video has been my thoughts since 2015 when I went natural. But whenever me or anyone else would say it people would gaslight us and say it’s not true The **obsession** with twist and braid outs is weird and very much comes from a place of internalized self hair for natural texture ‍♀️ You can definitely wear braid outs because you just genuinely like them, but to ONLY wear them religiously, especially if you’re making it the size of a type 3 looser textured curl pattern? Like come on Same thing w the obsession with wash and go’s and defining curls and never letting people see you with undefined curls. And if u do go out with undefined curls you feel ashamed and embarrassed or like your hair is not “done” It’s not hard to see that it’s coming from a place of not accepting the natural texture of their hair. And it’s been happening so long because no one is working through that place of internalized hatred because no one wants to admit it and come to terms with it Again, nothing is wrong with these styles, the issue is with the obsession of ONLY wearing these styles that make your hair seem like it is of a looser texture. Ofc that stems from our upbringing and being raised by family members who also didn’t love their hair so I am not solely putting the blame on our natural hair movement. I just hope we can come to terms with it and admit it one day

Sharaya Smith: When you touched on how triggering it can be for 4C hair folks to go out actively looking for representation just to find content creators using the term for views. . . That part! I'm a low porosity, low density, shrunken 4C natural. My skin is reddish brown. I've been natural since 2011, without wigs as a protective style. I also don't wear makeup. I'm not going to get into how hurtful it can be to want to be a part of the beauty of the natural movement just to find out that no one wants to see our version of natural. I don't think I have to tell you how sad girls/women have been trying to get results that don't work for our type. . . Like wash and go's and even twist outs. I've been to the point many times where it's like, "oh l, natural. They weren't talking about people who look like me." But then I'm the bad guy for still using terms like good and bad hair. It is what it is. I still don't know if what I have for my hair is love. I take care of it. I won't go back to chemicals and damaging my edges, but I'm honestly just at a tremendous point of acceptance and unlike LipGloss, mines isn't even that radical. I just don't carry as much texture and length envy as I started out with. That being said, maybe our communities, in general have failed. ‍♀️‍♀️‍♀️

Ariella B: One thing that was real hard was learning to love and appreciate my hair. Especially with the fact that my mom has the 3b 3c hair and I'm type 4. It always some hoopla about "you didn't get the good hair" narrative. Like yeah!!!! I'M A FRO BABY!!!! SO WHAT? Its always the baldies that have an opinion on my hair have a seattt‍

Shehinah Wilson: Women are going back to relaxers and that's a good thing do what works for you whether you prefer natural or relaxed . Back 5-10 years ago we saw a trend in black women going natural from relaxed and transitioning from perms. I dont think you should jump on the bandwagon and be natural just because it is trendy and just because everyone else is doing it. I feel within the natural hair community natural women put pressure on relaxed girls to go natural and they guilt trip them for staying relaxed. A lot of Natural women looked down on black women who relax their hair and felt as if it was a crime to relax their hair they as if if women who relax their hair are self haters have low self esteem and dont love themselves or are not pro black or Afrocentric. Being natural and being relaxed and self love have no correlation. Their are plenty of black women who are natural that hate being black and hate their natural hair and have low self esteem being natural doesnt mean your suprerior to women who arent natural. Your Hair grows because of a healthy hair vregimen not being relaxed or natural a lot of the things natural women do to grow their hairbthey can ve applied to relaxed hair regimens and their hair can grow just as long even though their hair is in a totally different state. Fuck the natural hair community and natural hair movement im not a part of your movement. To be honest i dont give a fuck what natural hair nazis say i do what i want with my hair i dont care for peoples negative comments or negativity. Their was a huge division and segregation within the natural community over what black women choose and prefer to do with their hair whether they prefer to be be natural or relaxed/ texlaxed. I'm not my hair I'm the soul that lives within I'm not team natural vs relaxed I do what I want with my hair. Black women do what the fuck you want with your hair nobody is owed an explanation. I SAID WHAT I SAID PERIOD.

Zachary Drake: “Faking our hair texture” I’m dead asf. Even when I do twist outs my hair still looks coily. And it’s very similar to my wash n gos just a bit more stretched. Even my sister who has type 3 hair mostly wears twist outs and her twist outs look NOTHING like mine people just wannna argue over nothing

Paige Got Books: I just hate how the natural hair community tried to make those who relax their hair feel as though they are trying to be white. I tried going natural and I just prefer to ease of relaxed hair. I personally haven't had any bad experiences with relaxers and I'm not trying to look white. Let us all just do what we want to do with our hair without judgement. It's just hair.

Yushua huesun: Black women hair is nature, the trees, the sun and everything that comes the nature☀️✊❤️

Princess Yonna ♡: If it failed, it did because rarely many even were planning on embracing their hair texture from the start. Many only went natural to grow out their hair so they can have long relax hair

itzpete: I want to say just love your own natural hair and the beauty behind the hair

Alicia Mendsey - Natural Hair Journey & Goals: Natural hair is beautiful and definitely a lifestyle. I have been natural since 2008 and I love it! I never saw the natural hair community as a movement or some type of trend. I love my hair and have talked about it in videos.

Arewa hair care TV: Some of my family made fun of me when i said amma grow my hair to my thighs and everybody laughed n said I'm delusional......I'm waist length and still growing and all of a sudden everyone wants to know what I'm doing. I usually answer: I'm being delusional . Then they start saying they didn't mean it n I took it too personal and other excuses.

agibbs3806: I love this topic!

rahxrahster: The hair type scale was created by Oprah's hairstylist and was initially made to push his products but we've managed to take it as gospel and run with it.

Oyame Mpono: As a natural, I’ve stopped Stretching my hair, I use less products (water and coconut oil). I’m at peace because I’m letting my hair be‍♀️

_.LOLO._ \_.FOFO._: Chole and Halle also were their natural hair. Their hair is naturally loced.

Yanique West: I just feel like everything got repetitive. I no longer really care about my hair I just wanna get up and go. Ended up relaxing my hair when I had my first baby

libfuzzy: I personally like wash and gos and twist outs because they help manage the hair. Leaving your hair in an undefined afro is actually more high maintenance

Very KinkyCurl: I don’t think natural hair was ever a trend or it died. It’s apart of us. And very much cyclical. In a couple of decades this will be popular again . IMO, it just weeded out and exposed the ones who rides trends and those who weren’t truly confident/fully invested within themselves. To each own, but natural gas has been made so complicated and it’s not. 12 hour wash days are ridiculous and these “methods” need to stop. Wash/condition/moisturized and style as desired nothing more nothing less.

ERY Leigh: You know every time I see a video about the Natural Hair community and people talking about oh when I went natural I thought I was gonna have loose curls and that’s like really funny to me because when I went natural it was when Obama was reelected and I was in middle school and I used to watch girls with types 4b-c hair because that’s what I thought my Natural Hair was going to look like even when I cut off the back of my hair I thought OK yes I’m going to have typed 4c hair but the Lord had other plans because when I got to the middle of my head I couldn’t see back there and I was feeling with my hands and I kept feeling straight hair but I had already grown out so much of my hair so it didn’t make any sense so instead of keep cutting I just grabbed a mirror and saw that the Lord did not plan for me to have 4c hair some people who have a loose texture or like 4a 3C mix texture when your hair is not moisturize properly it can look a lot like type 4C hair. So if anyone’s confused of how I didn’t know we’ll there you go i’m pretty sure I’m not the only person out here who probably thought that they were going to have type 4c hair when they went natural but I do know from my understanding there were a lot more women who thought that they were going to have loose textured hair there’s like a serious problem with the perceptions we have about our hair and I really do believe it starts at a young age from your parents my mom did not teach me to hate any texture of hair I didn’t even know about many different textures of hair I just kind of figured it out as I got older but I didn’t have any distain for either or texture but I do hope we can get to a place to accept 4c hair and for people to accept their 4c hair because it is a beautiful hair texture and it’s kind where it all started

Traffic Control: I wouldn't say it failed because I learned a lot. It was a movement; movements don't last forever.

Michelle Grobbelaar: Im never gonna relax my hair but I don't even follow most of the natural hair rules. I have type 4 hair and baby I use white people shampoo with the sulphates on it. And it cleans my hair and it smells nice. I barely lay my edges my eco styler is still full. And I use heat. I've never done a silk press Imma wait a few years to do it but I never threw away the blow dryer. I literally still blow dry my hair to stretch it. I dont care if people wanna get mad blow drying my hair made dealing with my natural hair easier. I haven't even used curling gel this year lol. Natural hair is not that hard but the thing is natural hair youtubers overcomplicated it. As much as I appreciate JenniferNYC and Monarchcurl for their comments I'm not abandoning oils. The castor oil that EYE use helped with my hair growth and I will continue using it. However I am following their wash n go method and its great for my hair. Guys just do what works for your natural hair. Also even though I mainly attract black men, it is true if you live in certain areas black men prefer longer natural hair and dont like short 4c hair tbh. Not all of them but a lot of them.

Georgianna Dean: Tbh I always say that black folks only want to fight racism in regards with accessibility to whiteness. But ignore all of the issues in the community such as colorism, texturism, featurism, xenophobia, basically all the problems in the white community minus racism. There is still a stigma of natural hair and locs in the community. Especially if you have type 4 hair. My father begged me to stopped perming my hair because I didn’t love myself, but then once I stopped and he saw my natural type 4 hair, he was like your hair is so dry so nappy and ugly.

EULA 🦢: Im seeing a pattern. Black men on the internet have never heard of the phrase IF THE SHOE FITS WEAR IT .If you dont agree so bad then DONT SAY ANYTHING ❤️

Queen B: When I get on pinterest my feed is all 3a & 3c type hair or the hair that many mixed girls have. I have 4c hair and it is hard to find different hairstyle instead of a puff. My hair is long enough to style but it gets annoying to a point.

Micaella: Chloe,Halle and Kali are some of my fav natural hair girls

2damecuteUK: I don’t think the natural hair community failed it just evolved. The point of the natural hair movement was for people to learn how to care, love and appreciate their hair instead of trying to make it conform. After the lockdown restrictions and ppl could leave their homes I’ve seen so many black women just out rocking natural hair in every form. Wearing natural hair out is becoming the norm and that to me is a successful result.

The Dr. Cross: I been natural for over 20 years..lol. If it takes an hour it is not a wash &* go... lmao... people need to get right with their OWN natural hair- that's the problem. Many people (inc yt ppl) subscribed and inflated the type 3 girls because their curls are appealing to both Black and yt women. And capitalism LOVES mass marketing. Anyway - I don't blame individuals- I blame yt supremacy. But this was fun to watch. :) Lipgloss is everything!! Haha Love her. I dont CARE what MEN think...they think silly things..lol

Kenneth wannamaker: It is, and will always be an impossibility for the natural hair communities to fail at all times period whatsoever worldwide!!!!!!!!! SISTER TAYLOR YOU IS MOST AMAZING SOUL ATXALL TIMES PERIOD WHATSOEVER, YOU, AND ALL OF THE VERY, VERY BEAUTIFUL BLACK GORGEOUS PRINCESSES, AND QUEENS WORLDWIDE. IN THE HOLY AND PRECIOUS NAME OF MY PERSONAL LORD AND SAVIOUR JESUS CHRIST AMEN AND AMEN!!!!!!!!

Alivia Blount: Taking a weekend to DEEP condition is a thing but for everyday? Who has the time…

april christine: Ok omg I looooove lisette but girl switches her routine EVERY week

Essence of Reality: I was just thinking about this issue

Shope CE: People dissecting how it didn't fail lol ***blows raspberries*** chiillllleeee it failed! I hope there's a rebirth of a better version of it though. May the 2 types or BARELY 3 types don't become THEE face again.

Jermaine Au Natural: Yes for rebirth but the right way!

Indi1O McColn: Y’all there was a channel a few weeks ago that did a good deep dive into the natural hair community all the way back to African exports vs kimmytube vs taren guy AND I CANT FIND IT! anyone know what that channel was cause I can’t find any of the the two videos that explained everything

Alivia Blount: Yea tree tingle from Trader Joe’s or luseta products are good for 4A

Mia's Garden: Let's make this normal.... we do it to ourselves.

Diamond Joe: Girl remember when black men got mad at the girl for saying Mexicans men always get the bag or always have a job something like that.

King hill: ❤️❤️❤️❤️

Sümwîtëgūrłnæm: Hey guys, I need your help. I'm 14. My mother is Indian and has a loose texture. She doesn't really get my hair problems and I personally think she hates my hair texture (4a). I've been really struggling to live my hair as it is or rather not be ashamed of it. I get really happy to have my natural hair out. But I'm labeled a snappy headed and ugly at school; ironically, by the black kids at my school which consists of Africans with coarse hair who hide behind box braids and mixed girls with loose texture while my white friends seem to genuinely find me gorgeous. So here is the problem. My mom want me to get a texturizer before starting highschool. I keep telling her that I feel like I would be loosing a part of myself forever as I don't want to shave my head later in life. But she insists that "it's time for a change" Should I do it? I just want to feel beautiful. I want people to look at me the way they look at biracial girls. I want to be pretty too. Pls help idk how both love myself and be loved by those around me (btw I'm a black passing Indian/black mix at a PW and a 6 year bullying victim) any help is greatly appreciated!

Alivia Blount: Black women be self deprecating

Shalien: you are so PRETTY

Kiera Tatum: girly where did you get your top?

Jas Momo: Hinge is free, unless you want extra stuff like any other dating app

MALES ain't 💩: Love the way the video comes on with the Lil Uzi music

Tasmeen Baker: Does anyone know the intro song?

QueenRisaIsYourEnemy: Nice video! How long are your braids?

Aliyyah: Hi<3

K H: HIIIII

Chichi: hinge is free

Koaa faith: My bf is Chinese, Puerto Rican and Brazilian and I’m black both sides and he says “You have 4c hair” and I tell him my curls aren’t that kinky and I really felt so weird about it that I try not to wear my own hair him sometimes
